probably not until next summer i'm guessing. shit. i fell behind, and my crappy cable company doesnt have on demand...so i'll have to catch up when it comes out on DVD. i hate when that happens...anyway, i'm praying that McNulty comes back into the forefront and they actually have, ya know, a WIRE tap and a whole heapin' helping of the Major Crimes Unit in the final season.

to watch The Wire when I had HBO...4, 5 years ago so it must have been in it's first or second season and I was never constent with catching it at the same time so I could never really get into it, but now I wish I had, I have a feeling it's a lot like HOMICIDE (same creators right? or producers?) where you relaly have to marinate yourself in it to "get it" Homicide, man there's a show I miss, if it hadn't been for my friend justin telling me how much better it was then LAW & ORDER which I was raving about, then I would have never checked it out,

You are correct. I watched 5 or 6 episodes of the first season out of habit because it was Sunday night and that's what I did on Sunday nights. I kept wondering why I was watching it because nothing was really happening and it was VERY slow. Then all of a sudden, I was hooked (the moment of clarity came during the scene with Greggs in the alley in the car). Get the DVDs and give it another chance. You won't be sorry.

    Top Ten Wire Moments

    by drbanner

I fucking love this show, and this season was no different. In my opinion, it was the best season yet. That being said, here are my Top 10 Wire moments from the previous 4 seasons. (*Warning* I'll try to keep them as spoiler-free as possible as pertaining to tonight's episode, but this will include the deaths of major characters from seasons 1-4)

    10. Ziggy Sabotka finally going nuts and killing Double G in his store (season 2)

    9. Marlo capping that girl right in front of her house after finding out she was a mole (season 3)

    8. Michael beating down Kennard with Namond running away (season 4)

    7. Bodie's fate and it's effect on McNulty (season 4)

    6. D'Angelo getting strangled in the Jail library (season 2)

    5. Prez pistol whipping the 14 year old kid, causing a mini riot in the towers (season 1)

    4. Rawls in the gay bar (season 3)

    3. Stringer revealing to Avon that he was the one behind D'Angelo's murder (season 3)

    2. Omar and Brother Mouzone gunning down Stringer (season 3)

    1. Kima getting ambushed in the alley (season 1)

I know I'm missing a lot, but I had to narrow it down.

    Kennard

    by doggus47

Kennard should have his own show, the "The Kennard Variety Hour". Also, Beadie is looking good. Hopefully there will be some shower scenes next season, pivotal to the plot and tastefully done of course. I think they over did it with the foreshadowing in the garden and the clouds, but it did set the mood and give you a sense of dread.

    Other top wire moments

    by doggus47

DrBanner, your moments left out some of the great drunk McNulty escapades- like getting drunk, crashing then re-doing the crash and ending up bloody in bed with that waitress.
My top scene is in season 1 where where McNulty and his partner only say "fuck" while going over the crime scene- "fuuuck" "fuck!" "fuck?"

Bodie, king of the "spit-take", you will be missed. There's always one "major" death on The Wire each season, and this year it was Bodie. Well, at least he went out with a bang and not like a bitch! I like that his death was the impetus for McNulty to be a "Dick" once more; hopefully he'll be a nice, sober Dick, instead of a mean, old drunk Dick. The Wire is a great show, and one that actually improves in quality each season. I can't wait for season 5...

    by evilwizardglick

Bubbles turning the undercovers into "dope fiends". Explaining how they need more dirt and broken vials on the soles of the shoes. The first "Fuzzy Dunlop" when the camera gets run over. The opening scene of season one describing how Snot Boogie died. When McNulty asks why they didn't just kick boogie out of the craps game and the black guys says "This America we can't do that". Discovering Kima is a lesbian. Discovering Omar is gay. Omar going for cereal in his robe and everyone running from him. McNulty and the Russian hookers.

...Omar on the witness stand. Ah, hell...you could pretty much list every scene Omar's appeared in. And Bunk burning his suit. Actually, to do the show justice it would have to be a list of more than a hundred. by cruel_kingdom

The finale is over, and now my Sundays look very bleak... My Cowboys lost 42-17 also. Shit, Sundays are looking like crap. By the way, I love how many major publications are now calling THE WIRE the best show on TV. It is, but no one I know watches the motherfucker. Someone said it was like HOMICIDE. It is in a way. It always got incredible reviews and critical acclaim, but no one watched the show and it kind of limped along to its inevitable death. But thank God there will be a season 5. I remember reading that the show's creators thought this would be the last season, so they were writing a season finale that tied everything up. Now that I've seen it, I can only think how pissed I would have been if the show had been canceled at this point. This tied up nothing, but really, really makes me salivate as I look foward towards next year. God I love this show.

    Density

    by andmyaxe

One of the greatest things about this great show is that with the number of major, well-defined characters presented, every episode has some interaction between two or more of them that results in something unexpected. Like, for example, in tonight's episode, we had tremendous scenes between Colvin and Cutty, between Bunk and Snoop, between the Greek guy and Marlo. A lot of the pleasure in this season came from that kind of interweave, that can only come when you've taken the time to build such a strong foundation. Incredible stuff.

    by drtobiasfunke

What more can be said? This was an amazing ending to a season where a lot of characters changed a lot. Think about it, just about every character went through huge changes. And when you have maybe 20-30 characters per episode, that's a lot of changes. I was happy to see Spiros back. He pretty much made season 2. Looks like he'll be back for season five. So far, they've set up season five to be fuckin insane. Insane I tell you.

    Best Show Ever!

    by gandalftheblack

This season was by far the best TV show for YEARS!!! Shame about Boadie, the last of the true Barksdales. Awesome ending, shame about Randy and Dukie. I saw Michael's turn to the darkside early on, but those 2's stories hit deep. There had to be a 5th season, too much left undone. Is Marlo going to get The Greek's connection? Is McNulty going to be a raging, womanizing alcoholic again? Is Daniels going to become commissioner? Is Michael going to slimb up the ladder and be an enforcer next season? This season raised the bar of all of television to create engaging characters/storiylines, and the next season will have to be even better. I hope they get the props they deserve come emmys and golden globes- they give it to Sopranos and that hasn't be that great for years- it's The Wire's time!!

Another damn list of favorite moments from THE WIRE

    by chickengeorgevii

but to begin - episode 50 (4.13) "Final Grades" stands up there among the finest eps of the series...(best ep in my mind is still #11 (1.11) "The Hunt" which was the post-Kima and Orlando shooting when all the cops threw politics out the window and all became "real poh-leece".)

    But for the favorite moments?
    10) Justin trying to sell drugs to Bunny Colvin. (ep.3.1 "Time After Time")
    9) Omar getting dressed for breakfast in phone books and atlases (ep.4.7 "Unto Others")
    8) Horseface stealing Valchek's new van and putting it on its "World tour". (ep.2.2 "Collateral Damage")
    7) Omar turning in his clock for repair to Prop Joe. "What's wrong with it?" "It ran out of time." (ep.4.11 "A New Day") Bonus - Omar getting the clock back in ep.4.13 "Final Grades".
    6) "You see that? That's the North Star. Follow it home." (ep.3.6 "Homecoming")
    5) End of season one - Omar sticking up a New York dealer..."It's all in the game." (ep.1.13 "Sentencing")
    4) Avon telling Stringer to leave the safe open "no point in ruining a good safe" and then the look on both of their faces when McNulty and Daniels only cuffed Avon. (ep.1.12 "Cleaning Up".)
    3) The Sobatka file slowly making it's way through the FBI mail cart to be posted on the FBI web and thus alerting The Greek's mole, all while Sobatka himself is going to meet the Greek, and which arrives first, (ep. 2.11 "Bad Dreams")
    2) Bodie being led to the back of the florist to pick out a REAL funeral floral arrangment for DeAngelo. (ep.2.7 "Backwash")
    1) The impassioned, very true-to-life speech by Walon at the Narcotics Anonymous meeting which brought Bubbles to actually sober up. Played by real life addict and ex-con Steve Earle, who means every word of it. And bonus points for bringing Walon back for this last episode. (ep.1.9 "Game Day")

Anyone who loves that character, should hear Steve Earle's music. You can hear why they cast him. Pure genius....And thus, I hear WMD's are the bomb! - - - George, The 7th Chicken!!!!

Afrer WeyBey knows he's goingt o jail he brings D'Angelo into this dakened room. D'Angelo is sure he's about to be executed and Wey-Bey turns on the lights and there's a whole bunch of fish tanks and WeyBey asks D'Angelo to feed his fish.
Coles: "I got laid last night"
Bunk :"Oh yeah? Your ass still hurt?"
Bodie and Poot first murder-executing their best friend.

I agreee with the scene of Carver walking down the hall with Randy screaming at him "You gonna help me Sgt Carver?" Carver crying in the car.

Though the fuck murder scene cannot be topped.

And again- If Clarke Peters (Lester Freamon) gets passed for an emmy nom again, and the show is passed for Best Drama , then the voters ought to be killed and forcred to watch 7th Heaven and Yes Dear for eternity

and that is not because my best friend from my teenage years had a speaking part in it (Derrick Horton for Officer Baxter) but this show serves as a historic document of the realities of urban America. As a PG County Maryland resident who went to public schools and taught in DC schools for a year...this show is deadly accurate. I saw the final episode of this season on Demand and it is just great. by andmyaxe

One of the best scenes from this last episode was the conversation between McNulty and Daniels. If I'm not mistaken, the dialogue was a verbatim recreation of one of their first scenes from the first season ('No street rips','Chain of command'), only this time they each spoke the other's lines. It was all delivered with smiles and sense of accumulated irony at all that had happened in the years since then. Excellent work by Simon.

You're absolutely correct -- the scene that they were revisiting was either in the second or the third episode of the first season. I only recognized it because I recently bought the Season 1 DVD, and I watched the episode in question about a day before watching this season finale.

It was a great scene, showing that the characters themselves are aware of how far they've come, and of how much respect they've developed for each other since their rocky beginning.

    Gonna miss Bodie. RIP

    by russman

Great how this show can make you feel bad for a drug dealer. When the season first started I was kind of upset to see McNaulty and Bodie pushed off to the side but I figured it was all done for a reason and the look on McNaulty's face when he finds out Bodie was killed. You feel it ... it's a mix of sadness from a missed opportunity to get a CI but a personal loss because he knows this guy and on a base level has a certain amount of respect for him. God this show is great!

    Finale... Finally!

    by turketron

Finally we have a much-needed Wire talkback, so sad that the show went unnoticed on this site while I've seen other garbage-ass shows up on the main page (*cough*, Jericho) multiple times.

This show is brilliant... watched seasons 1-3 over the summer 2 years ago and couldn't wait till they brought it back for 4. Great season, this show truly does get better and better. The finale was mind-blowingly good. Bodie went out like a soldier, and next season it's payback time because THE BAND IS BACK TOGETHER baby! Marlowe has to go down... the guy is a fucking monster.

Favorite moments, off the top of my head:
    1)McNulty's drunken double crash.
2)Omar and Bowtie BACK2BACK vs. Stringer.
3)Randy's "you gonna help me?" rant at the hospital... if you didn't feel something there you're dead.
4)Michael's beatdown of Kennard... he deserved it.
5)Any time Daniels says "Dammit McNulty"
Can't wait until season 5, it's gonna be a barn burner. I need to get the DVD's, what's this about awesome commentary?

    Cruel Kingdom

    by sid 8.0

I second that emotion. Hate watching The Wire leave for another season. Only thing I hate more is watching my Cowboys lose 42-17 come the fuck on man what happened? Anyway those two things set my mood for the rest of the week. Can't wait for the new season to start. Anyone else get the feeling that Marlo is going to try to hook up with the Greeks himself and get smacked down hard. And that Omar is on serious borrowed time now. Too bad about Randy and Dukie those kids definetly got the short end of the stick. Or the long end depending on your point of view.

    One of my favorite moments...

    by keysersoze

because it was so heartbreaking, and this is in the entire history of The Wire...when Bubbles goes with Johnny to the substance abuse meeting and goes up to get his keychain, followed by Johnny kidding him about it, followed just by the look on Bub's face, and knowing he was unforunately going to go crashing back into his life as a dope fiend. that was absolutely fantastic.

    Question about the finale

    by andmyaxe

Who was the guy that Michael wacked near the end of the episode? I didn't recognize him and couldn't tell if he was someone significant, or just some unlucky SOB.

    "You're a soldier, Bodie."

    by boxcutter

Superb. Time to go back to Season 1.1 and start yet again for all the details and the craft we missed. What's the Sunday alternative: Sleeper Cell 2? Please...George the 7th Chicken already highlighted most of the Great Moments, but the small stuff sticks too...Bubs: "It's a fine line between heaven and here."

    Another great Prop Joe moment...

    by red ned lynch

...when Omar and Proposition Joe settle on 20 cents on the dollar for the dope Omar stole and we later hear Marlo tell Chris that Omar's selling the drugs back for 30 cents on the dollar. And you just smile, because you've known that guy, and that moment is so true, and they don't even dwell on it in this show, it's just a bit of throwaway business, and it is perfect. Damn I love this show.

    Bubbs

    by tidge

Some great moments mentioned above; I get a kick out of every time Bubbles asks for "McNutty".
I'm amazed how much "The Wire" rises above all other HBO drama. We've had some great moments in Rome, Deadwood, Sopranos, Carnivale, etc...but nothing as consistently excellent as the Wire.

    Favorite moments

    by monkeyangst

My two favorite moments were from the same episode: The "Fuck" scene in the kitchen, where Bunk and McNulty show why they're the best in the Baltimore Homicide Dept, and the Herc-moving-the-desk scene that opened the episode, and the bemused look on Lester's face the whole time.

Season 4 was my favourite season.

    by powers boothe

I feel really empty now it's all over. We probably won't see season 5 'til 2008.

I loved the use of Paul Weller's cover of Walk On Broken Splinters during the final section of the season finale.

Watching "Dookie" on the corner selling drugs broke my heart.

    Great fucking show.
