This looks like such a beautiful movie and I'm stoked about how Zack Snyder stuck to Miller's vision. This movie will definitely set the bar for comic book movies once its released and hopefully put to shame anything that has come before it.

    by occula

look at the book - almost every piece of dialogue is in bold and/or with exclamation points. in comicese that means YELL! i give snyder ups for truly sticking to the source (and i don't mean the actual story, because we've already hashed that to bits).

    Sanctity of source material.

    by vivavitalogy

I think it's great that Miller adapted projects can find directors that believe in the sanctity of the original source material. WHY OH WHY can't other graphic novels get the same treatment? Is it a sin to want a GOOD Alan Moore adapted film? Why can't Mike Mignola admit he hated the fact that the studio and Del Toro fucked Hellboy from the get go? And so on and so on and so on...how many other film adapted graphic novels/comics etc. have been complete disapointments because directors (and others) felt the need to dismantle and change already great ideas? I would like to hear your thoughts fellow talkbackers.

    The best shot-in-front-of-a-green-screen movie...EVAR!

    by photoman

This has to be, hands down, the best movie obviously shot and acted in front of a green screen we've seen in a LONG time. It harkens back to the glory days of "Attack of the Clones" and "Sin City". I get chills when I see the actors obviously acting in front a green screen with obviously CGI created characters in the background. I almost crap my pants when I see them using elephants and rhinos in the battle...even though there's no historical basis that the Persians used either in the battle of Thermopylae. But it goes to show the dedication the producers have in bringing to the audience the BEST obviously computer generated creatures made in the last 6 months! I can't WAIT to download this as a shaky-cam telesynced movie and watch it in glorious 320x240 resolution in the corner of my computer screen...as it was meant to be!

It looked good, in places, but the acting was horrendous.....its not necessarily the screming, but the pantomine acting behind it. I will probably check it out, but my expectations are very low.....and anyone looking for historical accuracy in a movie which has a spartan with a strong scottish accent is obviously deluded, the spartans were not gay...they loved each other like brothers.

everything that is wrong with the movies today. Terrible script, bad acting, over-reliance on fake-looking digital effects. Puts all the action in the trailer to get people into the theatre then nothing else to give once you're in there. Pass. Hollywood is doomed. I predict $30 million tops. You heard it here first.

    by cornponious

...sure does scream a lot. The funny thing is that when he screams suddenly everybody else starts screaming. And that line at the end, "this is going to be a wild night". Yeah, I'm sure the Spartans spoke like that. This flick will be good for the youngsters because it has little story substance and lots of cool and nifty "Matrix"-like effects. But if I wanted to see The Matrix, I'd watch The Matrix. And who is that bearded yelling man anyway? Frankly, I think it would be more interesting with Alfred Molina in that role.

Elephants and rhinos and ancient hand grenades... This film is so filled with coolness I want to break into Warner Bros offices just to see 5 more minutes of it. To those who say slow mo looks like matrix effects, check your fucking eyes. This has it´s own style and it´s NOT style over substance. It´s a story about 300 desperate men against the hordes of Asia against them. It´s a last stand story. All who remember "the Alamo" would agree that a story like that doesn´t need anything else than the actual battle preceded by an introduction on what lead the heroes to that battle.

I'll tell you what, I like historical epics as much as the next man... as a matter of fact, the Battle of Thermopylae has always kind of interested me... But I don't know what the hell this "300" is supposed to be about. It looks like absolute shit (fake visual effects, legions of Persians riding elephants and rhinos [LOTR anyone?], and MONSTERS [what the fuck is are MONSTERS doing at the Battle of Thermopylae?!]. History has been bastardized. Shame on you Warner Brothers... Shame on you Zack Snyder (then again, I don't know why anyone has faith in his sketchy directing anyway... his one big film was NOWHERE NEAR as good as George Romero's classic).

    by cobbio

Like many people here I dug the trailer until Butler spoke its last line, but I'm willing to overlook the modern dialogue set in a proto-historical time. Because goddamn did some of the fighting look badass intense. The fact this film is rated R -- not PG-13! -- means there will be blood and carnage and... oh yeah... lots of guys yelling and screaming across the battlefield.
I like the fact it adds giants and monsters to the mix. Aside from looking cool onscreen and probably wielding some big, heavy weapons, it adds a creative fantasy element to the story. Yes, it's not historically accurate, and yes, it's comic book-ish. But I love the look of it, the over-the-top-ness of it. Stylistic violence done well is something that I love and crave. I live for it, in fact. I'm excited for this film.

    About the last line........

    by kai_mah'gra

.........in the trailer, which everyone is bitching about ("....one wild night"): how many times in movies, or more specifically trailers, have you seen the studio using lines, or even entire scenes, for the trailer, that eventually don't make it into the final cut in the movie? I'm willing to bet you that by the time this hits theatresin March, they will have edited in another take of that scene with a different line (like "This will be a night for the ages", or something like that) or just left it out, on the cutting rooom floor, altogether. I'm guessing they decided to use it for the trailer primarily for marketing purposes and to reach a younger demographic audience (smells like a silly studio exec's or a suit's dumbass idea). I highly doubt that Miller (who had more consulting input andmore say in general, on this movie than he did on Sin City where he was even a c-director, nor Snyder for that matter, will leave that line in. Calm your silly little selves down. Oh, and for those clueless few still left out there, the movie is based directly (as in heavily inspired by) on the graphic novel of the same name by Frank Miller;; itself, which is, in turn, a loosely based, and highly stylized and sensationalised re-depiction of the historically factual battle of Thermopyle. An account that has been re-told numerous times by various less-accurate scribes through the ages such as Pressfield's Gate's of Fire, most recently. So, if you're looking for historical accuracy here, then you're about 4-5 layers way off the mark.

Persians are descendants of one of the Aryan tribes and love the West! (Ignore Iran's government, their full of idiots). Its the Arabs who hate the whities.

Basically, Hollywood screwed up by portraying the Persians as being Arab looking. For some reason Hollywood has this fixation that Persians = Arabs, I guess it boils down to a lack of education on thier part.

Read some history books and you'll find that the Persians were nicknamed the "white race" by their Arab neighbors (probably why they hate Persians so much).

appear the way it actually would in real life? With, like... the actual colors the way our eyes see them? I'd rather watch Lawrence taking Aquaba for the 900th time since I was 16 than any of this stylized, lifeless, shit. This digital intermediate shit is ruining the color of films. What's the point of shooting on FILM if the thing is going to look like it was shot on video by the time you print it back to film anyway? I've shot on 35mm and there's not much of a trick to making it look fantastic with good framing. You just point it at something and the details and color it gets are astounding with very little extra light. Why would directors digitally fuck around with the palette and skew everything towards one color? Just shoot in black and white then, at least it looks interesting. If you watch some of the LOTR stuff of the color correction, I couldn't believe how much better it looked until they made everything all blue, or all gold, or all green or wahtever color they picked out of a hat that day at the DI lab. It's fine to match tones or contrast from scene to scene, but the way they completely change the colors is unnatural and makes the CGI even more unrealistic.

300 warriors fighting for their king and nation, not caring for their lives will always be deep shit to read about or watch on film. That´s why stories about that last stand battle which created legends will always be told. A battle to the death seems uncomplicated at first glance, as does the king who commands his loyal troops, but it´s because that king makes it look easy and uncomplicated. He is the best warrior during that age. Take Alexander at Gaugamela, or Napoleon at Austerlitz, they made each battle seem like a piece of cake, but it´s because they were a lot more skilled in warfare than their enemies. Leonidas lost against the Persians, but he gave them hell first. He made the Persians hate their own king, whom they had thought to be a god on earth, cause he brought them to a place where they had to face those fucking Spartans who refused to die. So Leonidas made Xerxes a mortal in the eyes of his subjects. If that isn´t complicated than I don´t know what is. Leonidas killed a god, he killed the image of a god. Miller has very smartly made Xerxes impossibly tall just to emphasize the image of him being divine to his people. When Leonidas destroyed that image he became a legend. For me such a story has lots of substance, if you know what I mean.

    ALMOST the best trailer ever

    by mr jones

but they missed the uber-line.. "Then we will fight in the shade".. I'm not normally a rabid fanboy, but I want to download that trailer because it's possibly the best traile rever invented by man, (except possibly the TPM trailer where Maul ignites the second blade)... I know it's not historically accurate, I know it's not going to make me a better person, but that is, hands down, the most exciting movie coming out next year.. and if anyone has a download link to a fullscreen I will have your children (for the night).. PLUS YELLING IS COOL

    Reply to Talkback

    Oh, and one more thing

    by mr jones

What is it with everyone saying it's not historically accurate as though that makes it a worse movie.. Two points - 1. Did anyone see King Arthur? Because whatever you say about historical accuracy, no-one goes to movies because of it - they go to see entertainment and if you think otherwise you're a fucking idiot (before you all bitch, I also understand that yo can have both, but in a vote, I'm taking kicking ass over how many people there were at the battle which seems to be somewhat of a bugbear) 2. This will make people look it up. The faux-historians amongst you who bitch about the bastardization of history need to realise that more people will look up Thermopylae after this movie than probably have in history before it, so if you really want history to be known, you need to be giving this film some love. Oh, and finally, shouting is cool. Arrows are loud you know. Oh, and actually finally, blackwood made the most concisely amazing point in this entire talkback. Blackwood, you are legend!

    by streakerfreak1983

Yup they just sold this to me. Anytime NIN has been used in either a preview or movie I seem to really enjoy the film(granted I love NIN but that's besides the point) I love Se7en and I love Lost Highway. This looks incredible. After Troy, Alexander, generic epic here, I lost faith in this genre of film. King Auther, Kingdom of Heaven, and Gladiator(not a big fan but I can see it's strengths) were enjoyable enough where I could not hate them. Hopefully this will be amazing. The CGI actaully ads a lot of style to the film where normally I hate CGI like that(Lord of the Rings)

Some geeks here need to lighten up. It was pretty funny when I wrote it. I'm sure that Kramer guy loved the shot where the Spartan kicks "that guy" down the well.

Thank you for schooling the historically ignorant. The story of Sparta is a timeless lesson more warriors and politicians should know. And the trailer is just visually stunning. Really.

    Vin and slappy jones

    by streakerfreak1983

Eww, I forgot Vin was trying to make it. That would just be god awful. No thank you. And slappy jones was that sarcasm? That is not what I meant. I hate CGI. Hate it with a passion. I miss the days of miniatures and actual armies with actual people. CGI ALWAYS looks fake. The people who make CGI have no understanding of photography, graininess, and depth of field. What I meant was that on occasions there are films that provide a new prospective only achievable with CGI such as Sin City and this. They allow a sort of dream world or in this case comic book world where style is more important. I only like CGI in these cases or small stuff like a tear or things like that.

THIS MOVIE IS RACIST AGAINST MUSLIMS!

    by condomwrapper

*pulls out my race card* This wretched film, which I haven't seen, is racist against Muslims because the Persians today are mostly Muslims. Yeah, yeah, yeah so there were no Muslims at the time, but it still shows people who *eventually* became Muslims and is therefore racist towards the Muslim hordes. *puts race card away*

    Calm Down Haters

    by alexander luthor

It seems silly to attack a movie which is obviously not pretending to be a historically accurate retelling of the battle of Thermopylae. The story is heavily stylized. The comic (sorry, but graphic novel sounds so phony) is a stylized, superhero-tinged representation of the battle of the 200 Spartans against the Persian Empire. The use of monsters, elephants, giants and the stark and stunning color palette is (I can only assume from having read the book) meant not to poke fun at or disrespect what happened. Rather, these artistic liberties are meant to do two things. 1) to emphasize the heroism of the 300 Spartans and demonstrate what a massive undertaking it was for them to stand against an Imperial army in defense of their lands when their own country men couldn't be bothered to do so. And 2...to make everything in the story look cool as shit by implementing all kinds of fantasy and comic book-like elements in the story. Really, there's already been a move about the 300 Spartans. And there have already been books. What Frank Miller did was take a group of real examples of 'super humans' and tell a story of their feats in the traditional superhero medium of comics. It's not meant to be pretentious, terribly inciteful or (of all things) historically accurate. It's meant to be big. As big as Superman punching a robot attacking Metropolis or the X-Men facing down Magneto and the Brotherhood of Mutants.

If you are looking for historical accuracy and choose not to watch the movie I understand you. That is anyone's right. But the hating is really a weird thing. I don't understand the level of anger behind it. I am new to this (1st post). But I don't think I expected this.

Finally, on the look of the film: It's obvious that the director of this film if going for the same look as Miller's comic (yes he's not made an arty movie or some looked-over masterpiece that everyone tells me I have to see but I still think even previously bad directors can make good movies...and vice versa). The slow motion, green screens and speech are meant to bring the life of the comic to the screen (writers use screaming captions in comics to emphasize emotion in the face of the limitations of the medium ...for those of you who don't know already). In this sense, this movie is very accurate in protraying the STORY that is '300' as opposed to the story OF the 300 Spartans.

Any way you slice it I think this is my favorite trailer of the year and I am looking forward to this as much as Spider-Man 3 next year. This is SPARTA!!!!!

And for the record, there were 300 Spartans sire fighters (basically soldiers that new ther were gonna die) and 5000 other Greek warriors against an army of possibly as many as 2 million Persians. The figures are not important nor can they be accurately verified in any meaningful way. The point is that the Spartans were way outnumbered and knew they were gonna die but stood and fought an impossible fight against a monstrous enemy. And in the end, as Leonidas takes down the Persian 'god' Xerxes and forces Greece to unite against the Persian invaders, the 300 Spartans become more than men. They become super heroes.

    by cat_corporation

Still hate that bit from the teaser (how Scottish does Butler sound then?!) - hopefully in context it will be a bit better. Other than that, and despite my desire to see a 'based on historical fact' version of Thermopylai - particularly one that credits the poor Thespaians who stayed to fight alongside the Spartans and were also wiped out to a man - I'm wildly excited about this. I hope it's every bit as insane as the trailer makes out. MOLON LABE!

    by half vader

Yes, we're going to be hopelessly outnumbered and we'll all die, so I think I'll set an example to my people by quietly conversing with the enemy and when it's time to psyche the soldiers up for the monstous battle we'll all sit around with cups of tea and I'll ask them nicely to do their best. Spiffing.
