Because We Need Another Inspirational Football Movie!! Here comes THE EXPRESS!!

Published at:  Dec 07, 2006 9:02:53 PM CST

Merrick again...

Dennis Quaid will star as the man who coached Ernie Davis -- the first black player to win the Heisman Trophy. Davis has yet to be cast. The film will be directed by Gary Fleder, a veteran television director (HOMICIDE, FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON, THINGS TO DO IN DENVER WHEN YOU'RE DEAD, KISS THE GIRLS).

Charles Leavitt ("Blood Diamond") wrote the latest draft of the script.

...says the Hollywood Reporter article HERE.

THE EXPRESS joins other inspirational football movies like the recent INVINCIBLE and the forthcoming WE ARE MARSHALL. I think it's about time for a really depressing football movie...equal time and all.

    by vikingkitty

How many times can Hollywood make movies featuring the first time a member of a minority won/accomplished something? I wouldn't be surprised to wake up one day and read Sony is producing a movie about the first hispanic Jeopardy! champion. A heartwarming triumph, indeed.

this is one of the great stories no one knows...

    by keysersoze

or at least very few people know. i know, it's the whole, "oh, another inspirational football story" and all that...however, as a Syracuse grad and fan, i'm absolutely stoked about this. not only was Ernie the first african-american heisman winner, but he died of lieukemia at the age of 23, before he could ever play a down of pro football, yet he maintained a tremendous attitude the whole time. he would have been one of the all-time greats. just check out the ESPN sports century on him, and i defy you to not get a bit misty eyed.

You beat me to it. Oh and am I the only one who loves THINGS TO DO IN DENVER WHEN YOU'RE DEAD?? That movie was fucking cool, man. Chris Walken and Andy García steal the show. Not to mention doc Brown and Buscemi as a mute assasin. O and that tango girl from SCENT OF A WOMAN looks bloody GORGEUS. Where is the love? It deserves it.

    by keysersoze

i personally think people will be surprised, because it DOESNT have a happy ending. it's basically Brian's Song, only these events took place well before that story. i'm excited as hell about this.

Dennis Quaid already has some gridiron experience

    by jackrabbitslim

playing the old timer clearly modeled on Dan Marino in "Any Given Sunday", prolly the most recent non-inspirational film with its overtly selfish players, grasping trophy wives, covetuous owners, etc. ESPN's "Playmakers" also was hardly a flattering look at the gridiron game. So where are ESPN's balls in ignoring Michael Irvin with his atrociously racist Tony Romo quotes?

    Enie Davis

    by mrjonz72

When I first saw the topic heading, I was jeez another Inspirational Football movie, but then I saw it was about Ernie Davis and my attitude change. This is a story that should/needs to be told. I just wonder if they are going to stop once he wins the Heisman Trophy (to keep it somewhat upbeat) or go into his very short tenure with the browns and his no avail fight with Lukemia. I find that part of his life just as be as inspirational if not more so, but at the same time its very tragic and one can only wonder what could have been if he had lived.

you can't tell the Ernie Davis story...

    by keysersoze

and have it stop with the Heisman win. you've got to have his being drafted #1, traded to the Browns, and then being diagnosed with Leukemia, mentioning how he became friends with Jim Brown (who Davis succeeded at Syracuse, and who he would have played alongside in Cleveland) and how Art Modell pleaded with Paul Brown to let Davis at least return one kickoff so that he could achieve his dream of playing in the NFL, but Brown refusing to let him suit up...and ultimately, his very, very untimely death. it's just a great, great story, and i'm glad it's FINALLY going to be told.

    Simpson Leaked Scripts

    by ews

Was I the only one to see, for a brief minute, an article titled "Simpsons: The Movie script leaks. Get your look at the pages here before they disappear?"

Was around 12pm (I think) GMT. Was only up for a minute or so, and when I clicked on the link took me to a page that wasn't found.

Hopefully other people saw this :D
