EXCLUSIVE AICN Feature on APOCALYPTO & the effort that went into recreating the Mayan Civilization!!!

Hey folks, Harry here - Honestly I really hope there's an Art of APOCALYPTO book coming out. As a child that grew up with every Christmas vacation being a trip throughout the Yucatan Pennisula - going to pyramid sites and learning about the various cultures that left such amazing sights behind... Well to see this being brought to life so vividly - it's just a great treat. Can't wait to see the final film - but I must, as BNAT week is basically beginning. Oh yeah - the book. I am really curious to see all the various designs that they went through to get to the final look. Here's a good feature that Disney gave AICN to show y'all a glimpse at the amazing work that went into this remarkable film. Here ya go...

No matter, at least we get to see it now rather than later. ^_^ Apocalypto looks fab btw, the first film in a long time that can truly be called unique. I'm just glad something cool is coming out, there hasn't been a good movie released since Casino Royale. I know, all of 4 weeks, but that is an eternity in geek years.

    Stop romanticizing the fucking Mayans!!!

    by godoffireinhell

I hate it when people get all esoteric and touchy feely about the Mayans and their oh so great achievements as a culture. Guess what, the very same culture performed HUMAN SACRIFICE regularily, occasionally on the scale of actually committing GENOCIDE! Yeah, a really great culture they were! No wonder Gibson identified with them to the degree of making a movie about them... They were pretty much the NAZIS of their time!

LA Times article about on-set Gibson crazyness

    by godoffireinhell

http://tinyurl.com/yh3oya Consider this oft-repeated account from the crew on location in Veracruz, Mexico, this spring: Makeup and wardrobe departments arrived at 1 a.m. to outfit more than 1,000 extras with elaborate wigs, prosthetic ears, scars and body paint for the eye-popping Mayan City sequence. Eight hours later, when the entire cast and crew were ready for the first scheduled shot, Gibson was MIA. When the director rolled onto set around noon he opted out of the planned schedule and instead shot running scenes with two lead actors until the sun went down. "Extras are so cheap and Gibson's so rich from 'Passion of the Christ' it didn't matter," noted one department head. "He worked in a less structured way and there were no studio suits to push him along. His focus on the leads added minutes to each and every setup so it all took a lot longer than it looked on paper."

    First Stop Romanticizing Israel

    by DarfurOnTheRocks

it seems perfectly acceptable for the world to turn their eyes away from the terrorizing that the State of Israel commits each and every day. However, you are going to attack Gibson's portrayal of Mayans? Note, what I said is merely a condemnation of the policies of a nation, rather than Jews. FYI: Israel has 300 plus nuclear warheads, and have leveled parts of Lebanon without provocation. Go fight for social justice in our own time.

and it's nothing to do with mel gibson...it's to do with the AD and whoever's running around scheduling things - i've never worked a day on a film where somebody didn't waste something or other in a ridiculous fashion, just because they could.

I hope it doesn't glorify the Mayans too much...

    by DoctorWho?

We get too much of that crap in the movies. You know...where a British officer meets a native -- African, Indian, whatever -- in any movie, play or novel of the last 30 years, the Englishman will be a sneering, supercilious sadist and the native will be a dignified man of peace in perfect harmony with his environment in whose tribal language there is not even a word for "war" or "killing" or "weapons of mass destruction. Most archaeologists ignored the fortifications around Mayan cities and viewed the Mayan elite as peaceful priests. But over the last 20 years Mayan records have been deciphered. Contrary to archaeologists' wishful thinking, they show the allegedly peaceful elite was heavily into war, conquest and the sanguinary sacrifice of beaten opponents. And they frequently used the term "sugar tits" as well.

    by Zarles

...on two things. Whether or not to see this flick, and what to think about Mel Gibson. In regard to the movie, it looks fascinating and beautiful, but of course there's the connection to Mel Gibson and all his bullshit. Which leads me my second conundrum - is Mel really an anti-Semetic? Or is he just incapable of keeping his mouth shut? He can't seem to stop alcohol from going in, and he can't seem to stop outlandish statements from coming out. I'd like to get off his dick for a minute, though, because honestly, I think he's about as anti-Semetic as Michael Richards is a racist, but I don't know. I might be just far too optimistic...

    by seankc2001

I don't care how harsh that sounds it is true. your dick-head comment about the Mayans being the Nazis of their time is just plain bullshit. how many fucking hate filled Christians raped and murdered women and children for no other reason than they did not like how they prayed or who they prayed too? did you ever hear of a couple of little historical events called the Crusades and the Inquisition? How about the Salem witch burnings? It is sanctimonious bullshit like yours that gives organized religion of any flavor a bad name. go back to your hole and keep your dumb ass xenophobic religion to yourself. By the way if God is so fucking "all forgiving and loving" why is there a Hell in the first place?

You can't discount everything that I say simply by calling me a tool. I ask you whether it is hilarious that Palestinians are put in camps and that their land stolen? Ok, the Palestinian-Israeli situation is messed up. But surely you do know that israel invaded Lebanon because Hezbollah took 3000, no 300, no 30, but 3 soldiers. And for that they leveled a country. All of those rocket attacks were not proportionate to the ordinance that the IDF dropped. Yet, I do not know what you are smoking to be able to justify of people, just because they are Muslims who want to defend their rights. But then again, you probably believe that Mooslims dont like the way the we live.....because Bush said so right? Muslims do not care about how the Western World lives, they just do not appreciate when the US wants to tell them how to live. And this is the problem, certain parties want to impose their beliefs on others. Hence, they talk about democracy to the Mid-East, while violating the constitution of the US with new legislation to curb civil liberties. They talk of WMD and the dire nookiller threat of Arab nations, then turn a blind eye to 300 nuclear warheads that Israel possesses. Hilarious indeed. But that is the way of the colonizer, who seeks to "civilize" the black, brown, and American Indian society, but are really after land, and wealth.

I never said Christianity or Christians are great and that you seem to figure me as some kind of right-wing Christian fundamentalist attacking a pagan religion is pretty funny. I'll get just as pissed off about any movie that tries to white-wash the Crusades or the Inquisition or just about anything, any historical event, any culture, any people. Now let me just repeat that while the Mayans achieved some awe-inspiring things in the fields of architecture, astronomy, mathematics and others, there were also aspects of the culture that was sadistic, barbaric, unciviliced and occasionally genocidal. I take it that in Gibson's APOCALYPTO the Mayans are portrayed as "evil" and decadent and that's alright with me. Aronofsky's THE FOUNTAIN, however, totally ignored their darker sides and Harry's introduction to this article is guilty of the same white-washing.

I guess that makes for entertainment. You see the same problems with Amistad, Titanic, and other historical pics. However, the studios like to make movies that make the audience feel good about themselves.

The Nazi's of the Modern World

    by Roboteer

If Muslims are committing terrorist acts against civilians and striking against the US because we are trying to tell them what to do, then why is radical Islam the source of so many major conflicts worldwide? You name where there's fighting, terrorism, oppression and it's more likely Islamics behind it than all other groups combined. Israel, Kashmir, Sudan, Phillippines, Nigeria, Indonesia, Lebanon, Ethiopia, Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Chechnya. Not to mention major documented Islamic terrorist acts on innocents that roll off the tongue (unlike the purported Israeli ones) NYC, Washington, London, Madrid, Tel Aviv, the Paris Intifada, Bali, Beslan, Taba, Sharm el-Sheikh, Baghdad, and Amman to name a few. How is it all these countries are at fault against poor little ol' Islam? Well they ain't. It's a case of one narcisscistic, feudalistic, ignorant, intolerant, extremist, well funded, violent, repressive cult minority who can't get along with anyone else. Not even themselves. So tell me where in the world Hindus, Christians, Buddhists are fomenting violence in the name of their religion before mentioning them in the same breath with Islam. Don't be stupid. There's no excuse, no moral parity even close here.....Where would you most expect Muslim repression, Israel? Some of the luckiest Muslims in the world are the ones that live there. They have jobs, a decent standard of living, suffrage, and freedom constrained only to the degree that Israel has to protect itself from their homicidal brethren. If once prosperous & Christian Lebanon is decimated, you can blame the Palestinians and Syria for that, not Israel....The Crusades were horrible, but they began because Christian pilgrims were denied access to the Holy Land and any Christians unlucky enough to be there already were put to the sword. Just that little genocide thing ..... And lastly, all cultures have histories of conquest, pillaging, and brutality. The differnce is some have become civilized since then. Western countries could never justify now the bombings of civilans that took place in WW2 even when their enemies can. No country in the history of the world has spent a king's ransom developing warfare that keeps civilian casualties to a minimum like the US has. Whereas, radical Islam still embraces the barbarism of the 12th century. Lopping off peoples heads, dousing innocents with kerosene and burning them alive, crashing civilian planes into skyscrapers, engaging in mass torture for the fun of it. Killing as many civilians as possible in the most gruesome ways possible. ON PURPOSE. They're pissed because the modern world with it's knowledge, comforts, and desire for freedom worldwide is intruding on their obsessive medieval xenophobic religion which suppresses half their population (women). They aren't successful because of their own limitations, not because of anyone else keeping them down. All those others in conflict with 'em, and especially Israel, are just convenient scapegoats for their own failure and ignorance, excuses for the random hate and and brutality. Radical Islamists ARE truly the Nazis of the modern world in so many ways it's unreal. Oh... and Mel's film looks good too. On balance, were Mayans any better/worse than most Europeans of the time?

  • Dec. 7, 2006, noon CST

Ahhh so it is all Muslims fault huh?

    by DarfurOnTheRocks

Too much CNN and Fox news for you, I guess. Most of those hotspots that you mention are traditional Muslim areas!!!! Of course Jerusalem is important for all three religions. However, you seem intent on blaming Muslims for defends their rights in their countries. If you believe that Islam hates the rest of the world, then why are CERTAIN Western powers trying to invade the Muslim world? Has Saddam EVER mobilized his army against the good citizens of the US? Yet where is the US army? It is interesting how your diatribe on the evils of radical Islam reveals your own hatred to Muslims. People are free to believe that they want to believe. That is the Western way is it not? Then why is Bush talking about democratizing the Middle-East, as if democracy is the ultimate and only way? I also find your failure to recall any IDF atrocities typical of individuals who like their news "fair and balanced" ;) Go read up on the subject from multiple sources please. Some of the luckiest Muslims in world are in Israel? Yeah, some of the luckiest American Indians are thriving in those lovely reservations. You simply dont make any sense, I am afraid.

    Crusades????

    by DarfurOnTheRocks

Perhaps you should also read up on some history to discover that the crusades were a big land grab with leaders using the name of religion to incite war. Christians, Muslims, and Jews got along well. Please do not try to revise history. Heck, I am half-expecting you to say that new evidence has linked Al-Qaeda to the death of Jesus.
