Longshot takes a bionic look at STIRS OF ECHOES
Got an earlier report on this film that was pretty highly praising... So here we are with the latest... Sounds pretty darn good ya know? Here's Longshot....
well this is my first effort as a geek spy, so be gentle. anyways,
last thursday i saw a sneak preview of this new movie coming out called
"Stir of Echoes," starring Kevin Bacon. i'd never heard of it before,
so i thought maybe it was really just a front for another movie (who
better than Kevin Bacon as a front, he's been in every other movie).
well, when i got to the theater, they were indeed playing "Stir of
Echoes." Kevin Bacon plays the lead, and is the only well known actor
in the film (the only other guy i recognized was Kevin Dunn). it's
directed and written by David Koepp. not one of my favorite writers,
personally, after the mess he wrote up with "The Lost World." however,
he adapted this story from one by Richard Matheson ("I am Legend" and
"What Dreams May Come" author). it's about a guy who went to work
full time right after high school, got married, had a son, you know the
deal.
at the beginning of the film, Kevin Bacon's son looks at the camera and
says, "What's it like to be dead?" Bacon puts his son to bed, and then
he and his wife go to a party, where he volunteers to be hypnotized to
disprove that it can actually be done. of course, it can be. in one
of the movies coolest scenes, he goes under, way under. he sees a
bunch of strange things that don't make sense, and then he wakes up
from the session in a cold sweat. he goes home that night and he tries
to go to sleep. While he is making love to his wife, the strange
visions start to come back to him, disturbing him greatly. he goes
down stairs to get some orange juice, and as he is standing down there,
he sees an apparition of a teenage girl.
that's all in the first 15 minutes (i think). it starts out slow, but
gets going really quick. there are a couple of stupid points in the
movie. there's this guy Neil, who identifies with Kevin Bacon's son
saying "the boy has eyes on him" telling the audience that there are
more of those that can see strange things out there. pretty cool,
right? but then, Bacon's wife goes looking for this Neil guy later on,
and he blows the whole mystery of who they are. oh, well. my opinion?
i enjoyed this movie a lot. maybe because i had never heard of it. i
went to the theater and saw "In Dreams" with high expectations from the
trailer, which were pretty quickly shot down. "Stir of Echoes" is a
much better film. i would definitely recommend it to anyone else who
psyched up by the trailer to "In Dreams" but was disappointed with the
film.
well, that's my first spy report. do i get a nickname, now? if so,
(and your greatness gives me a choice about it) call me "Longshot" that
cool guy with the bionic eye in the X-Men who gets really lucky and
gets all the chicks.
talk to you later, Harry

Lucky for us that Koepp delivers as often as he misses because this sounds awfully good. The promise of a genre-styled psychodrama with a side of Bacon, hopefully delivering what Flatliners didn't (It was a Schumacher, wasn't it?)... Thus adding about five more degrees to Bacon's wretched little game. Who else is in the movie and did it come through Amblin like Koepp's previous 'The Trigger Effect'?

And I bet he made sure he told his friends he thought it was going to be Star Wars too, so that when he turned out to be right, everyone would have to bow down to his profound insightfulness. And I bet that he drew evidence from the certain phonetic similarities between the two titles and the way that the phrase "Stir Of Echoes" comes with the same innocent comic-book sensationalist connotations as "The Phantom Menace", and thought to himself how clever Lucas was.........but not clever enough! Oh no! You may fool them, but I see through your cunning plots, I'll always be one step ahead, fighting for truth and justice and...oh, it is Stir Of Echoes. Well at least it is for the first half hour, we'll see. Oh, what? Go home now? Are you sure? Erm, erm, I mean Yes! Of course I'm going home now! Yes, going home! I'm just on my way out of the door! Going home! I'm thinking about taking the bus you know, because I'm going home! Oh yes, on my way there right now actually! Yes, just going out of the door, like you do,...did he just lock the door? Oh, okay. Well, I better not stray too far from the cinema, might get mingled in with some crowd or other, then they'll never find me. So. Here we are then. Just waiting around. NOT BECAUSE THERE'S ANY REASON, NO NO, NO REASON, NO I'M JUST WAITING HERE, YOU KNOW, LIKE ONE DOES, YES, JUST, YOU KNOW, "ADJUSTING" AH HA HA HA. Hmmmm. My God! It's an initiative test! All this time I've been wasting standing out here, they were waiting for me at another entrance, with the other perceptive ones! My God! What an idiot I've been, quick, must...run...~Wait! Isn't that the manager? Yes, I recognise him from the dossier I collected in the run up to the recent one off showing of "Les Yeux Sans Visage" - I must have failed the initiative test on that one too! My God, I was right after all! How they mocked me at college! Yes, well they weren't smiling when I lit the match though were they? No, they wanted me to call the ambulence then, didn't they? Communists. Well No fucking Boris is going to get in my way. Damn, thats the last door. There must be a secret door, blending in with the wall!..........damn "multiplexes".........this is going to take ages - Yes! an endurance test! I'll show them I have what it takes!...........Hmmmmm....I've ..always loved the...silence.......Sunrise..so...beautiful.... Seventy seven times now. Guess that's another theory out the window. There must be another way, why would they show us that mock-up film and then send us home? OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD! The answers! They're feeding our questionnaires into a computer as we speak, the film we saw was made scientifically so that they could tell from our answers whether we were suitable to view Episode 1 or not! What if my answers weren't good enough??? I wasn't taking it very seriously (an aspect of my personality I'll have to work on). I'll have to break in. No! Wait! That manager Communist! He's probably taken them to the rendez-vous point. I Must Kill Him Before He Gets There! No, if I don't trust that stinkin' Red then George wont. Why is it I have this strange affinity with George? Yes, the questionnaires are still in the cinema....in...the basement! In the underground bunker! I can't believe I could have been so stupid! Wow, I don't know how it is that these answers keep coming to me out of nowhere, its almost as if...GEORGE IS COMMUNICATING WITH ME TELEPATHICALLY....THROUGH THE FORCE!!! Yes! It does exist! I knew it was all true, ever since that afternoon I saw a skull in my mother's face and destiny made me shoot up that kindergarten: I too heard millions of voices scream out and then be suddenly silent. I am the chosen one. I must....reach out with the force....George....George.... people are looking at me .....George.....Hear Me.... why are they staring? ....George...I'm ready.... I think those policemen are going to come over, it'll be alright, it always is, and they probably don't know about those two cops from last night yet anyway ... they've stopped...voices...shouting...are they real? ..pointing...guns...bad feeling.
Must....make it...back....AICN report....just have to crawl up the stairs...mother can clean up the blood...even though both my parents and my baby brother are legless cardboard cut outs covered with layers of women's skin, and have drawing pins for eyes, boiled spaghetti for hair and permanently sit on the sofa and chairs around the fifties style radio that is in fact a pad of writing paper leaning against the wall, on top of the fireplace, with a child-like crayon drawing of a radio on the top sheet. Must report to Harry...George will read and find out my address...George is the NSA....George is... ...is... -
was in Contact with Jodie Foster who was in Taxi Driver with Robert Deniro who was in Sleepers with Kevin Bacon! Yes! Ok, you talkbackers, try this one: Ingrid Bergman. Actually, i wanna try this one myself since sweet Ingrid is, along with Natalie Portman, teh most beautiful woman ever. Ok, Ingrid was in Notorious with Cary Grant who was in North by Northwest with Martin Landeau who was in Ed Wood with that chick from HBO's Sex in the City (whats her name again?) who was in that action-on-the-police-boat flick with Bruce Willis who was in Pulp Fiction with Samuel L Jackson who was in Jackie Brown with Robert Deniro who was in Sleepers with Kevin Bacon! Yes, but was that six or seven degrees? Well, if you can do Ingrid Bergman in less, just try. But lets start a new one... can anyone do Orson Welles?

Course I haven't had a scoop in a long time. Don't get much news here in the DC area...
