TNT Teams with Executive Producers Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy And DreamWorks Television For Mystical Adventure Adapted from Stephen King and Peter Straub’s THE TALISMAN Six-Hour Limited Series About A Boy on Quest through Parallel Worlds Slated to Premiere on TNT in Summer 2008 After an enormously successful collaboration on the critically acclaimed Into the West, TNT is teaming once again with DreamWorks Television and executive producer Steven Spielberg, this time for an epic, six-hour adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub’s other-worldly adventure THE TALISMAN, according to an announcement by Michael Wright, senior vice president of original programming for TNT and TBS. This project also returns the drama network to King territory after such high-profile projects as Salem’s Lot, one of cable’s most popular movies of 2004, and this year’s Nightmares & Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King. Frequent Spielberg partner Kathleen Kennedy will join him in executive-producing THE TALISMAN, along with Ehren Kruger (Skeleton Key, The Ring, Arlington Road and currently adapting Nightline for DreamWorks Features), who will adapt the King/Straub novel. THE TALISMAN will be co-executive produced by Darryl Frank (Into the West, Taken) and Justin Falvey (Into the West, Las Vegas), who head up DreamWorks Television. It tells the story of Jack Sawyer, a boy who goes on a quest through this world and through a parallel world known as “The Territories,” experiencing both good and evil in each. His goal is to obtain a mysterious talisman that will save his dying mother’s life, as well as the life of her “twinner,” the Queen of The Territories. Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I sleep in and what happens? I think the idea of a 6 hour TALISMAN is fantastic. This story isn't even so hardcore I'd demand HBO or Showtime or some cable channel (although I have no idea how they're going to do the Sunlight Gardner home rampage on TNT). But why is Ehren Kruger still attached to this? I read his feature script (Click here to read that pissed off review) and it is one of the few times I've read something so bad, something so disrespectful of the original property that I was actually angry when I put the script down. I guess the hope is now that Kruger has 6 hours to fill, he won't, say... add in a train sequence or take all the magic out of by erasing the territories almost completely or turning the title piece into something found in a fucking U-Haul. Or turn Wolf retarded. Or turn Jack into a whining dickhead. Or turn Sunlight Gardner into Superman 4 Lex Luthor with both Duckie and Otis for sidekicks. I love Peter Straub and Stephen King's book. I love it dearly. I've been excited for over a decade now, since I first found out that Steven Spielberg had the rights to this. I still hold they could make it a magical two part theatrical experience, but a 6 hour mini-series I'm not against. But if they're going to do it, do it with someone who hasn't already proven he doesn't get the novel. And TNT? I don't know... they fucked up SALEM'S LOT something awful. I get bad vibes off this whole deal. I really don't want to see a shitty Talisman TV series made... not because I think it'll ruin the book, but because I know it'll ruin any chance of seeing a good telling of this story on film or TV. -Quint quint@aintitcool.com
