Wait A Minute... Who’s Directing PINEAPPLE EXPRESS?!?!

Published at:  Nov 29, 2006 3:17:20 AM CST

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

Holy shit, this film is now at the top of the list of things I have to see.

When I was on the SUPER BAD set recently, producer Shauna Robertson talked to me about another script by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg called PINEAPPLE EXPRESS. She couldn’t say the title to me without laughing, and I’ll be honest... I can’t say the title without laughing, either. What really makes it funny, though, is the notion that David Gordon Green is now the director attached to the film.

David Gordon Green. Director of the incredible GEORGE WASHINGTON, the best Terrence Malick film that Malick never made. Director of ALL THE REAL GIRLS, one of the most eccentric and affecting romances of this decade. Director of the underrated UNDERTOW, a modern-day NIGHT OF THE HUNTER with some great performances from a young cast. Not the first name you’d think of when you are putting together an action-comedy.

Still... this is who Judd Apatow and Shauna Robertson have signed to direct the film. And the choice has me crazy to see what he’s going to do, absolutely intrigued. I think Seth Rogen’s just about to explode as a movie star, and he’ll co-star here with James Franco as a pair of pot-smoking buddies who get caught up in a giant international drug cartel.

Here’s the VARIETY story that announced the deal:

"This project is an opportunity to plant an absurd buddy comedy in a rough-and-tumble action movie," Green said. "I've always been a sucker for the genre and hungry to fire up a comedy where characters don't get lost in their own concept."

    Seth Rogan's writing

The episode of Undeclared that he wrote was probably the best of the whole show. Really good comedy. I'll be looking forward to this and Super Bad.

Rogen did some good work in KNOCKED UP

though, that film is still deeply flawed.

    umm, Pineapple Express?

I'm clueless/naive. What's funny about that name? Some sexual innuendo? Drug humor?

    Great news

DGG has been working on getting an honest-to-god mainstream comedy off the ground for the past few years. First he was going to do "A Confederacy of Dunces", then he begged for the chance to do the Adam Sandler starring, Alexander Payne written "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry" but was turned down. He also wrote some comedy scripts with Danny McBride. Good to know he's finally got something in the pipeline, it'll be interesting to see if he adapts his style to a studio comedy.

"All the Real Girls" was a pretty big disappointment

especially after seeing the wonderful "George Washington". It started off very well, but rapidly devolves into cliches as soon as the insanely jealous brother shows up.

    Sounds really interesting

Good comedy writers paired with interesting director. We'll see what kind of comedy chops Green has.

    The Pineapple Express

    by 12-gauge

I think is the name for the jet streams from Hawaii that hit the Pacific Coast now and then. Undertow is amazing, but what about Snow Angels, says it's "completed" on imdb, but no release date.
