Ain’t It Cool News Sucked Into The STUDIO 60 Universe!!

Published at:  Nov 27, 2006 12:25:40 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

The big news is Vanity Fair’s Martha O’Dell (Christine Lahti) quotes Ain’t It Cool News in her story about “Studio 60.” Which should inspire all manner of outrage among the dramatis personae.

I grant you it’s not as cool as having Horatio Sanz dress up as Harry Knowles on the real “Saturday Night Live” (as he did a couple years ago), but it’s still plenty cool.

Our Canadian friends, who get to watch a day early, offer details.

“L-prime” says:

What’s it called?
“B-12”

Who’s responsible?
Eli Attie and Aaron Sorkin split a “Written by”.

What does TV Guide say?
A virus takes its toll on the cast, and Matt faces the challenge of coming up with material with a reduced writing staff. Also, Jordan drops a bombshell on Danny.

What else is TV Guide not telling us?
Not really a lot. Plays out pretty straightforward this time around, though the heavily promoted bombshell doesn’t show up until very late.

Writing staff being replaced?
Mark McKinney shows up as the very serious new/old writer with a list of issues. He also gives Matt a lecture in how HR works in the real world, TV or otherwise.

Hey reviewer, feel like getting all philosophical on the purpose of the series again?
Well, the requisite serious edge of the week was a tad obvious, playing a clear counterpoint to the conceit of comedy at the heart of the series, but that obviousness dulls some of the edge. Also, Harriet boxing with simple joke delivery seems a bit of a liability for a professional comedian just for the sake of some cute one-liners.

Do we see much of the show? Or are we jumping around it? Host? Musical guest?
Very much in the show this week, with a bit of flashing back through the week. Howie Mandel and Corrine Bailey Rae – easy NBC shill and someone I’ve never heard of. And there’s a lot of glimpses of comedy, only some horrible. The rest is definitely benefiting from McKinney’s polish.

Oh yeah, any indication Sorkin and/or everyone else on this thing reads this very page?
Well, the AICN namedrop gives me more than a little suspicion that I’ve got some influential eyeballs possibly on these very words (which makes you think I’d clean up that gawdawful sentence, don’t it?).

What’s good?
The idea of Look Back in Anger in Dutch; the glorious return of the spit-take to American comedy; “What the hell is the matter with you?”; Harriet can’t tell a joke!; “She’s … wavin’ at me right now.”; “I don’t think I’ll be able to do that, but whatever.”; “Flawless impersonation.”; Steven Weber tearing Amanda Peet a new one, though still not as much as she deserves; “I don’t find anything funny.”; Mark McKinney can friggin’ act (which anyone who’s seen Slings & Arrows already knows); “Y’know, Chevy Chase woke up one day, and he just wasn’t funny anymore.”; “I don’t know who Dilbert27 is and neither do you!”; “Damn. The guy’s Jewish.”; “Yeah, that’s what tanking is like.”; “The metaphor. There you go!”; every word out of Mark McKinney’s mouth; Lucy and Darius in general; “Banana! Banana, banana, banana, banana!”; overall a very tight and revealing look at the actual mechanics of the show dealing with curveballs. Yeah, not a shock I liked the show, but I genuinely think it’s improving each week.

Mark McKinney, really?
Yeah, I called him one of the weaker Kids, but I meant Kids during Kids’ run, and I meant his solo stuff. Chicken Lady was a non-starter, and only a few monologues had any traction. But let me clarify: Slings & Arrows (McKinney’s recent series up here in the Great White North) is one of the finest shows I’ve seen in forever, and McKinney has shown up in the last decade as a top shelf actor. If anyone can help add an edge of weight and experience with comedy, he can.

Not so good?
The opening monologue starts with the paralyzing fear that Howie Mandel is about to go into some “Bobby’s World” standup, but prevents mass viewer suicide with a (very-slightly) more palatable Deal or No Deal spoof, though I’d still rather watch puppies die; Harriet can’t tell a joke?; Martha Odell was not missed, having her back throws off the very nice dynamic that had been cultivated over the last few weeks; hopefully the very telegraphed Jordan twist will help improve her storyline.

Rating for 1.10 (out of five)
****.5. Good small-scale nuts and bolts plus the addition of McKinney add up to a winner.

“Daniel” says:

What’s It Called?
“B-12"

Who Wrote It?
Eli Attie and Aaron Sorkin

Who Directed It?
Bryan Gordan

What’s It About?
A virus infects the staff during a rehearsal; Martha O'Dell returns; Jordan does an interview about her personal life; Matt brings back an old writer to help Lucy and Darius

What’s Good About It?
Just a bit to note, I know I say this a lot, but if you've given up on this show for whatever reason, please give it a chance again. Last week's episode was probably the best, and this one is also great; there's no focus on religion, there's great banter, everyone gets a lot to do, the jokes are funny, the emotions are genuine, and there's a new story featured in the episode that proves that the people on the show do not think that they're the most important people in the world. It may be moot, but this show was good, but it's now great, and I'm glad there's still another 12 episodes this year....Getting back to things here:

Mark McKinney gets to act and plays an awesome character, Darius and Lucy become even better and real characters this week, a glimpse of Jeannie's ass and a shot of Harriet in her bra, The difficulty of hearing over a long table and the eunsuing "I'm Sorry"'s, the spit-take competition and Matt's reaction, I'm loving the growing focus on Danny as opposed to Matt (I have nothing against Matt, but Whitford is great) and it's been a subtle enough transition, Harriet's inability to tell a joke,

"Dilbert27 at Aint-It-Cool-News writes...", "What happened?" "Real life", "Could these lights be any hotter?" "No, this is as hot as they get", "I think she's mocking you", "Flawless impersonation", "I don't find anything funny", "I'll take the hell out of you", "He's trying to get a riff going, don't feed the fire", "You know, one day Chevy Chase woke up and he just wasn't funny", "It's like watching a drunken man cross an icy street", "I think she's mocking you", "Stand right there for another minute" "Why?" "For the metaphor", "I'm a medical marvel"

What’s Not Good About It?
A "Bachelor" parody seems a little out of date, the spit-take scene was funny, and actually showing the sketch based on it would have been too much, so I'm glad we didn't, I haven't decided if the monologue was funny or not, but it made me smirk, the reveal at the end would have been been more powerful if everyone wasn't aware of Peet's personal life

Rating (Out of Five)
****

“Buckydude” says:

Episode Title:
B-12

What’s the title mean:
It’s the shot given to the cast and crew because of a virus going around the studio, causing most of the cast and crew to become sick.

Why you guys at AICN might like it:
They come out and say the entire name of your site when referencing a disgruntled internet nerd, who by the way is Dilbert27 at aicn. It’s not antagonizing to you guys, it’s just basically free advertisement.

What Happens:
This week’s episode starts on Friday’s show and then switches to the Monday before and then changes between Friday and each proceeding day in the week. Matt on Friday (the present) has to deal with working with only having two freshman writers as backup as well as a new writer returning to the studio. Danny meanwhile spends the majority of the episode spatting with Martha over the article she wrote about the studio. Harriet can’t tell a joke and Jordan finally faces the press over her husband’s accusations. Finally, the new writers have to deal with losing a good sketch after the news story they are basing it on turns tragic.

What Works:
This is a great episode that works well with just about every character. Danny and Martha going back and forth over the place of opinions in newspapers is interesting while Matt teaching the writers about how to do just that sets up some good scenes for Darius and Laura. The writer they bring back (whose name I can’t recall) is funny because he isn’t funny at all especially when he shows Darius and Laura what it means to tank on a sketch. There’s a surprising amount of jewish humour in this episode which feels kind of odd but it’s generally funny. The guest of the week is Howey Mandell and he and Danny do a great riff on Deal or No Deal. The musical guest (whose name I likewise forget) provides a great opportunity for some music to be put into a serious scene without coming off as corny. Jordan is the real standout this episode, mainly do to her very enjoyable interview with a Time magazine reporter.

What Doesn’t Work:
Nothing stands out hugely, besides the usual argument that the show within the show actually isn’t very funny. I’m personally not bothered by this though. This is a drama not a comedy, they are writing the former, it’s okay if the show isn’t as funny as SNL. Also, there aren’t enough Matt&Danny moments, but that’s okay since we had a plethora of great ones last week.

Overall:
4.5/5

*Spoilers*

Ending (but you’ll see it coming a mile away)
“You’re pregnant!?”

    by danielkurland

you officially have permission to use my name on the show in any form or context. It would be unbelievable...The one week I decide to not be as enthusiastic in my rating and give it a 4 rather than a 4.5, and both other reviewers go for it. Oh well. Another great episode, and the show has definitely found itself by this point. Most of my thoughts are in my review, but I really like how the focus is slowly shifting to Danny, just like on Sports Night how things were subtly focused on Dan on season 2. Also, the phrase "I'm a medical marvel" comes up in this episode, has Sorkin used this before. I could have sworn it might have popped up on Sports Night...Enjoy this one guys, and next week with the whole Christmas vibe (Sorkin does great Christmas episodes), and the Jordan stuff, there's a lot of potential.

Didn't have time to throw a review together what with term papers coming due and all, but I wasn't as hot for this episode as the other guys... it's solid, but not great, although McKinney does very well. I'd have given it 3, maybe 3 and a half. The AICN namedrop would've been a hell of a lot cooler had they actually namedropped one of the regular talkbackers, but I suppose that's a bit much to ask. I second the kudos on Jordan's TIME interview.

I completely agree about 24. It was my all time favorite show right when it first came out, then I cried as it slowly got worse and worse over the course of the first season. I watched seasons 2-4 with the hope that it would get better. A friend of mine brought me season 5 on his laptop and I watched the first 2 episodes of season 5, but it just sucked so bad I couldn't take it anymore. =( We just turned it off and watched some West Wing instead (which he'd never seen before.)

    "there's great banter"

    by bizarrojerry

And there's my main problem with this and even The West Wing. I can't stand Sorkin's "banter". For him banter is dialogue that no humans in the real world ever spout. Doesn't anyone ever say, "um", or find themselves at a loss for words, or not have a snappy comeback ready at a second's notice? I should create my own word. Sorkinism: Banter while hurrying down a hallway.

Why McKinney was most likely used over Foley...

    by danielkurland

McKinney has been working with Sorkin since episode 2 writing the sketches from the show, and also had a "Story By" credited episodes ago. He was already employed. However, I suppose for the sake or argument, Foley could have been hired to write instead of McKinney in the first place.

While ago, I (reviewer L-Prime) called McKinney a weaker Kid and got torn a new strip for it. Now there's a bunch of you ranking the Kids in my stead (I have my own rankings, but don't feel like publishing them). McKinney has easily turned out to be the best actor of the Kids, and is absolutely neck-and-neck with Foley for post-Kids triumphs in my eyes (and if we only talk last 5 years or so, is far and away the best -- Foley's Newsradio cred can only last through so many celebrity poker tournaments). Sorkin made absolutely the right choice with McKinney, and I really look forward to seeing him more on S60. His was a really stellar guest spot, with enough meat that I can only see it getting better from here.

... and it's loke I quit smoking ! Actually, it's even better. I don't have to pretend to like a show that I don't just because of its pedigree. The headline for this story lured me in because of the proximity of the words "sucked" and "Studio 60". Even reading the brief summary induced headscratching. So the majority of the writing staff is out with flu and Matt has to write the whole show himself ? Isn't that what he was doing for the first few episodes anyway, not having faith in the writers ? Whatever ! I'm out ... I'm watching "Threshold" repeats on Sci-Fi. Quote that on your show, Sorkin !

the pregnancy direction is going to result with Danny being the father, due to the increase in Jordan/Danny scenes (which I've loved in spite of some criticism from others; "I'm dry"), having Jack be the father is infinitely tempting and would certainly be compelling, especially if maybe she had sex with Danny and Jack and Danny wants to be the father and Jack is just being an asshole. Either way, finding more for Weber to do is certainly the right direction to go.

    by chorleyfm

that makes 3 out of the last 4 that have been 4/5 or 4.5/5 for me. I really think Sorkin took heed of the criticism as well, because for the last two weeks there has been virtually no pontificating on religious matters. Oh and the Bachelor: Rome sketch made me laugh it wasn't classic by any means, but Corddry's guido made me chuckle.

Studio Sucky will not be renewed. NBCUNI gave it a full season order for a reason. If nets don't give shows an occasional full season order, people will lose faith in the net keeping a show past a few eps. In the future, why would I even try a scripted program? I wouldn't want to commit to something that could be yanked after 4-6 weeks. So, this full season order is an INVESTMENT in next season's new scripted shows on NBC. Bank on it.

constant anti-religious tone. Fuckin Sorkin seems to think that all religious people (and all of middle America) are akin to Jerry Falwell or that ilk. Sorry guy, it just ain't so. It's good to hear that the last episode or two have moved away from that and towards the mechanics of the show. That was the stuff that worked well, and that I was interested in the most in the first place before it got overshadowed by bullshit. Not sure if I can bring myself to give it another shot, though. I have a sneaking suspicion that this is just a temporary reprieve and that the long-winded anti-religious zealotry will begin anew soon. Oh, and LONG LIVE HEROES!!!!

God, I want to love this show. I really do. But...Harriet is really driving me nuts. The sketches and News60 just aren't funny enough to make me believe that the characters are as talented as the show wants me to believe they are. Matt and Harriet's story isn't even the fifth most interesting line in the show. And I just don't think that any of these people have a real life beyond the confines of the studio unless it involves baiting Christians. I really want to love this show but at this time I couldn't even agree that it deserves a second season. I think I'm going to watch the remainder of this season, enjoy the flashes of brilliance and think wistfully about what should have been. Sigh.

She always just drops by, and you don't even really notice her, but lines like, "Are you dizzy?" "Not more than usual" are great, and she's been a nice little presence. Definitely more likable than Harriet I think. And yes, a fine ass. Just fucking bring Sabrina Lloyd onto the cast. Now.

My priamry complaint this episode was

    by almost_human

the blatant scene stealing (or perhaps homage)from one of my favorite movies, My Favorite Year. The initial teaching the joke scene was very close to the scene in MFY where Mark Linn Baker finds out his gal can't tell a joke. They even used the same joke. Other than that, it's a pretty good show so far.

    by danielkurland

But don't bring on not only Lloyd, but Malina (it's inevitable), and Josh Charles. Charles is so good, and I don't know if him and Sorkin had a falling out over how Sports Night ended, but they deserve to be working together again. Hell, bring Krause on as a guest host or something. It would be pure bliss to actually have CSC exist within the same universe and Dan Rydell and Casey McCall actually met Met and Danny and they just bantered for 44 min.

    by tophat

...love how they're rebuilding the writing team. Maybe they can use that to focus on instead of the actual sketches. Although, the news sketch about Paul McCarthy was fucking hilarious; "Paul McCarthy has stated that he wrote the songs from his new album to help him through the divorce. One song's title is 'I earned my money, I was a freaking Beatle you slut'"

C'mon, admit it. You wanted to like this show, but it sucks. If you're saying you like it, you're deluding yourself. Amazing how unfunny it can be, seeing as how it's about a comedy show. I don't know, it just all feels artificial to me. It just fucking sucks. I'll go away now.

    it's getting better---but they're killing Harriet

    by podunk411

the sketches are getting a little funnier--and Danny is way more interesting to watch than matt most of the time. The writing room stuff was good--esp. with the addition of McKinney.

but what the fuck did they do to Harriet this week? might as well take a club to her character and beat her to death. was that weird or was it just me? a comedian who can't tell a joke? if I was that actress, & handed that writing i'd be a little miffed.

I agree with above, Jack is proving to be a pretty interesting part of the show--however I can see them going the sentimental route and either making him the baby daddy or Danny. I hope they do neither.

    here we go again

    by badmrwonka

all the people come onto these talkbacks and complain about the SAME THINGS EVERY WEEK...if it's so bothersome, why keep watching it? it's obviously not your thing. and at least stop posting the same boring rant about how anti-religion and liberal the show is. IT'S AARON SORKIN...it's like going into a 700 Club talkback and complaining it's too conservative. this isn't network news, the show does not have to sacrifice itself for the sake of being unbiased. an hour long network show is allowed to have an opinion. and doesn't anyone else think that the reason Sorkin dropped the AICN reference is because of all the talkback hate Studio60 gets on here? listen to all the lines about "who's dilbert27, he could be anyone, who cares, etc." the bottom line is, no matter what, this show is better than 95% of the trash on TV, and when shows like the bachelor, deal or no deal, and other mindless shit are popular, no one complains about them. no one says, "look it's simple math, you can do with a pen and paper. TAKE THE MONEY!!" that show is mindless, it is what it is, people watch it becuse they like it. fine, no problem. it's not for me, but what good does it do me to complain about how mindless it is? so why the outrage that Studio60 is liberal? oh well, I doubt many of the negative posters read the talkbacks after they've said their peace. flame on, bitches.

    Best Line

    by elohim

Okay, I've been a Studio 60 doubter for a while, and I generally agree with the most common complaints (show within a show isn't funny, smug sense of self-importance), but I've been sticking with this show because even at its worst, it never talks down to the audience. Say what you will about Aaron Sorkin, his writing is witty and fast paced, and it demands that you keep up. That said, tonight's episode was the first time I sat through an entire Studio 60 and thought, "Wow, I really liked that." This is where I jump on the Mark McKinney train that got going upthread. By giving us a character who's not snappy, who's genuinely vulnerable (this also goes for the two junior writers, to a lesser extent), they've finally given us a character we can legitimately care about and root for. I would tune in next week just to see how their little writing triumvirate develops. Also, I'm surprised no one has mentioned my favorite line, delivered after McKinney's proteges have been informed that their sketch won't be on the air. "They're over it. They're professionals." Perfect line, perfect delivery, the exact right mix tough love and genuine confidence. Can't think of a better way to wrap up that plot-line.

    I wanted to hate it

    by bob of the shire

Mainly because it has Matthew Perry in it and I hate anyone related to Friends. I skipped the first couple episodes but finally caught it on nbc.com out of sheer boredom and ended up loving it. It blows my mind that people favor the poorly written and acted Heroes over this. The show is getting better and if it keeps it up, I might actually buy it on DVD. Something I only do for a select few shows.

"Also, Harriet boxing with simple joke delivery ..."

    by annoyyou

"...seems a a bit of a liability for a professional comedian just for the sake of some cute one-liners." Yeah, considering Sorkin and/or this Eli person lifted the entire bit (including the joke about the duck) from "My Favorite Year." Rent it; it's midway through the film, a scene between Mark Linn Baker and Jessica Harper -- they're eating Chinese food and watching Alan Swann movies. Jesus Christ -- you'd think they'd steal something less obvious.

"Studio 60" isn't funny, it isn't witty, it is boring. I would rather watch paint dry than this crap. Saldy, it will remain on the tv because it is the critic's favorite show to masturbate about in print. Until they get bored with it as the creator's tweak the show to cater to the average viewer, I will continue to quickly switch the channel after "Heroes" to avoid this crap.

    by bizarrojerry

    by tophat

...I'm sorry. I know everyone has the right to their opinion ...but, not this time. Not when their opinion is so ignorant and mean-spirited. There's no point asking for someone to cancel the show unless you're just so awful and insecure you can't do anything else but put down a television show. This show is good. Its one of the only shows this season that has potential to become great. The only reason why people hate on it is because its a better story for it to fail than just being a show getting picked up. If ABC can keep BOSTON LEGAL on the air, so can NBC with this show. But, that's not going to happen with haters always spouting the same whiny complaints even while admitting they DON'T watch the show. You have a chance to save this show, Herc. If you don't, we'll just keep getting reality shows. Save this show, save television.

    Comedy

    by almost_human

Sorkin has never done straight comedy. Ever to my knowledge. I have read interviews where they called what he does "dramedy", a term that makes me want to vomit, but it is a more accurate description of what he writes. The comedy is situational more than joke or sketch material. Is it as funny as 30 Rock? No. But 30 Rock relies more on sketch-like scenes and dialog. Is it a well written show (minus the steal,er, homages)and well acted. The quality is FAR superior to that crap Heroes. I REALLY wanted to like Heroes, but come on, it's ridiculous even by comic book standards. I can easily point to a dozen more sophisticated and better written comics in any bookstore that carries them. Anything by Alan Moore for a start. I digress. To to compare Studio 60 to Heroes or 30 Rock or any other show on TV is a bit disingenuous. It is apples and oranges. If someone else was writing this TYPE of material, then maybe valid comparisons could be made. For now I think those who like Sorkin are a lot like pregnant women. You are either pregnant or not. There is no real in between.

    Peet Must Go

    by mrshowpwnsyou

peet is so bad on this show. her dialogue is paced horribly and she is one of the least likable characters on TV even though Sorkin has done everything he can to make her likable. I like the show now that they are making the show about MAKING THE SHOW...not about pontificating on religion, homosexuality, and peet's whole backstory....boring but getting better weekly

Wow, Harriet really is the punching bag on this show

    by drath

She can't tell a fucking joke? How did she get the job? Simon was a dramatic actor, and Harriet is aparently incapable of basic comedy, so how does that work? How'd she become one of "the Top 3" if she can't tell a joke? And then the episode ends with everyone agreeing to spit on her? I'd feel a lot better if she actually deserved it, but they don't make her bad or obnoxious at all, so instead it just seems spiteful. I hope Matt gets tortured like James Bond in Casino Royale. That'd even up things nicely. Maybe Harriet did it to him in a flashback, that'd explain everything!

I change the channel after "Heroes" and posted only to express my surprise "Studio 60" hasn't been axed yet. I did watch the first two episodes but found them unfunny and boring so never sat through another. As for Sorkin, whom I assume is either the producer or writer, he obviously cannot write "funny' since from the two episodes I saw, the "show within a show" wasn't funny. I would never assume that a complete stranger actually liked a show they were making a panning comment about and it makes me wonder about your "People readinG" ablities. With this I bid you adieu and I hope that your mate Sorkin continues to provide you with entertainment. As for me...I will continue to read, and post on this message board because, gee, I can. "That's swell, Tom, BUT YOUR LITTLE BROTHER IS STANDING IN THE MIDDLE OF AFGANISTAN!!!" Nope, that line is still silly. And Tom's "Reactionary Dad" and "Long Suffering Mom" were boring, obvious characters. You've seen them on a million other shows (like Anthony Edwards' parents on "ER"). But keep in mind, I posted THIRD and wrote in DEFENSE of the show. I maintain the show is most funny when it deals with the very serious nature of corporate America -- The scenes involving Amanda Peet, Steven Weber and the Amazing Ed Asner are BRILLIANT AND HILARIOUS.

    by jasondw

I've enjoyed the entire series so far (I don't watch TV to identify with characters, I watch it to escape into a fictional reality), but I agree that this was one of the best episodes so far. While I love everything that Sorkin writes, I can't help but feel the top-notch quality of this episode had something to do with Eli Attie having co-written the ep. After Sorkin left "West Wing," I thought the most-watchable eps were written by Attie.

Did you know that red FROOT LOOPS are now COLOSSAL?? I think Harriet not being able to tell a joke is by far the stupidest thing the show has done so far. A distant second is Tom getting off the hook for the speeding ticket. "That's swell Tom, but your little brother is standing in the middle of Afghanistan" doesn't even come close to scratching the surface. Hell, if you wanna pick on "The Wrap Party" I thought the dumbest thing in that episode was Tom's parents not knowing about "Who's on First?" Despite that, it's still my favorite episode.

Quit making sense and return to trolling! Seriously, you do have valid point about Sorkin in general being a bit overtly condescending, but at least he addresses issues when he does so and that has value in that it makes people think. Far more insulting are shows that are not only condescending but completely void on intellectual merit of any source.
