Updated with good QT links!!! THE HITCHER remake trailer hitches a ride on MSN's Crappy Player!

Published at:  Nov 22, 2006 5:07:59 PM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here, piggy-backing on Harry's story. I have good, quality Quicktime links for the trailer as well as some Windows Media versions... I'll post them below! Enjoy!

Hey folks, Harry here... You know me, I'm not a hater of remakes. I believe no serious fan of film can be. I mean hell, that would mean I'd have to hate THE WIZARD OF OZ, THE MALTESE FALCON, TARZAN THE APE MAN (Johnny Weismuller version), FRANKENSTEIN (1931) or in modern times, John Carpenter's THE THING, MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, THE LORD OF THE RINGS and... oh yeah, CASINO ROYALE. That said, most remakes suck your retinaes out. Now, I haven't been highly critical of Platinum Dunes' onslaught of remaking classic 70's and 80's Horror films. I have enjoyed the Chainsaw remakes, I have enjoyed the AMITYVILLE HORROR remake... BOY - what a difference Quicktime makes. When I initially looked at this on MSN, it just didn't visually look that good, but here it looks much better. As for the film? We'll see. They seem to definitely be following very closely to the original film - except for the whole two people in the car thing instead of just the awesome presence of C Thomas Howell - so that will change the dynamic of the story. Will that be good or bad? We'll have to wait to see, but in the trailer they're definitely blowing shit up real good and given the laxed attitudes about gross stuff that the MPAA currently has, I'm betting the truck ripping scene will be real good - and I hope we'll finally get to see that goodness, instead of cutting away like in the original. Check it out, here's the links:

    by batutta

...because they usually remake films that were great to begin with. The best remakes are of mediocre films like THE FLY (1953). Of course I'm sure someone out there right now is trying to remake the Cronenberg version, which would be idiocy. That said, I've never seen the original Hitcher, and although I'm sure it's not a classic, from what I've heard it's pretty effective.

"Will that be good or bad?"

    by rearden

Putting two people in the car is a BAD BAD BAD shitty-ass idea that completely ruins what is most interesting about the dynamic of the enitre film. The is a paranoid aspect to the original Hitcher, as if he only exists as Howell's personal demon. You can say goodbye to that. This seems to be the calling card of all of these new horror remakes. "Let's throw some hot T&A in there pronto? We can't have this flick be a sausage fest, can we?"
Just you wait until UNIVERSAL throws two or three "hot chicks" into their remake of THE THING. "Ya' know. To spice it up a little." Remember that I warned you. You didn't listen. YOU DIDN'T LISTEN!! **sniffle**

This actually looks pretty cool. But they'd better not pussy out with the semis scene. I want to see intestines spilling out all over the place. And Sean Bean is an inspired choice as the replacement for Rutger Hauer. I, for one, can't wait. And I'll watch the original tonight.

    by beefywhore

I am not fond of remakes at all, but it seems to me the ones I find tolerable are the ones where the original was a b level film to begin with. The original Hitcher is totally entertaining to me, but more on a popcorn-movie level than anything else...still the original came out in 86...maybe they could have waited another 10 yrs or so before remaking this one..just a thought for all you un-original bastards out there who make your living by raping other peoples films... BTW Batutta here's the IMDB link to the remake of The Fly being planned for 2008 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379788/

Don't worry, the original will still exist. You can go back and watch it any time you like, what with modern DVD technology and all. Rewind, fast forward, etc. Also, are people really complaining that there is a beautiful girl in this film? Really? Aside from there also being a beautiful girl in the original (Jennifer Jason Leigh - pretty AND talented), this brunette is very nice to look at, I think. Maybe she's a good actress, too, I don't know.

The Hitcher, Remakes and Truck Ripping

    by samson_k

I love the Hitcher - one of my all time favourite movies - I bemoan the fact that Rutger Hauer disappeared into a world of shite DTV crap until recently. I honestly cannot think of an Arnie film that would not have been improved tenfold by giving Hauer the role. I also like Sean Bean an awful lot and bemoan the fact that the British film industry has died on it's arse mostly because if it was in the same state it was in the 60's Bean would be up there with Richard Burton, Harris and Stanley Baker. I'm not at all convinced about this - the whole idea of two people being in the car is a shitty one for 'The Hitcher'. It messes up the whole dynamic as other posters have quite rightly said and makes it look like a remake of Roadkill or something.

I'm not against remakes but find it interesting that most of the ones that Harry mentioned are actually versions of novels and I have never been quite sure if those are remakes myself.

Oh and no! Please don't ever have a shitty CGI or indeed a great physical effect shot of the character being ripped by the trucks. The sounds, shock and actiong in the original would far surpass anything that Hollywood effects can do.

    Samson_K about remakes

    by dreadpirateroberts

Actually every film Harry mentions is a remake of a previous film, not a novel. The one that threw me was Wizard of Oz, did not know about the 1925 version till I looked it up.

    by chemical_boy

Holy Shit, after watching that trailer and the clips glimpsed of Sean Bean in the trench coat with a machine gun, it dawned on me that if they ever decided to make another film, he must play a terminator. Cold dead eyes, determined look, might need to change the Sheffield accent, then again maybe not.

    DredPirateRobert - Remakes

    by samson_k

Most of the ones that Harry mentioned though come from a novel to begin with though. In fact the only two that are remakes just of movies are 'The Thing' and 'The Magnificent Seven'. Oh, and 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre if you include that as one that he liked rather than loved.

In fact - I think the Thing

    by samson_k

Was remade from a sci-fi short story called 'Who Goes There'. So unless the Seven Samurai was based on a Japanese novel then that's the only true remake of a previous movie rather than an adaptation of a source material. It doesn't necessarily detract from the creative bankruptcy in Hollywood but to me they've always seemed a little more legitimate.

    this is troubling...

    by stickmangrit

first off, as others have noted, the dynamic of "is Rutger Hauer real or is Howell imagining him?" angle is now dead and gone since there are two people in the car(unless they want to go totally bugfuck, pull an Identity and make all three characters the same person drooling on themselves in a fucking padded cell somewhere). also, did anyone else notice that Sophia Bush seems to be watching the bearded male tied up to the two trucks? compound this with the fact that the family with the station-wagon has survivors, and that the twosome decides to drive said wagon, wow we have some wierd divergences. however, Bean does seem to kick all sorts of ass in this trailer.

WM (VC1) can look just as good (watch any HD DVD lately?). Don't blame the format, blame bad compressionists who don't know how to use their tools.

Whatever happened to C. THomas Howell?

    by doc_strange

I saw the original a few months back on AMC and I was surprised at how effective the acting between Howell and Hauer is. Then after learning that the movie is based on the Doors song Riders on the Storm, it just took the movie to a whole other level. Even with the B-movieness, it was a great thriller. By the end, you really want to see Hauer's character bite the dust. Hard.

just saw the trailer and I have to ask, why are they even remaking this? It's only been about 20 years, damn. Have they seriously no imagination as to come up with something completely original? I can think up at least a hundred sitting here. Now that I think about it, this is how Bay makes his money, kind of like how Uwe Boll gets his tax writeoffs, Bay makes shit remakes for 5 million and makes a 20 million profit because moviegoers are too stupid or lazy to check out their local video store.

    by stovetopstuffin'

the ORIGINAL was. This looks lame! The reason why the Fly and The Thing remakes worked is because they took movies that were fairly B-grade and made them into terrifying movies on both a psychological level and a visceral level. This, along with the amityville and TCM remakes, look to be just taking the imagery and making a fancy looking duplicate, but brining none of the psychological aspects into it. Besides, Hitcher already had a terrifying psychological storyline, so what is there to improve on?
