Steve Carell's Maxwell Smart finds his Agent 99!!!

Published at:  Nov 21, 2006 5:51:26 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I had a mad crush on Barbara Feldon as Agent 99. I grew up watching GET SMART on Nick At Nite and have many fond memories of the show. I'm really curious to see what Steve Carell has in store in the film version. If anyone can fill Don Adams' telephone-equiped shoes, it'd be him.

And now they've made a casting decision that sits pretty well with me. The new 99 is Ann Hathaway. She's cute and hopefully she'll have the spunk that made Feldon's 99 so adorable. What do you folks think?

    by kevinwillis.net

Not too worried. Steve Carell was dead on as Uncle Arthur in the completely horrible Bewitched remake. So I'm not worried about Steve being good. The movie around him, however . . . maybe it'll be good. Not holding my breath. My suspicion is, in the end, they will have missed it by _that_ much.

I wonder if Hathaway will prove to be as interesting as Elizabeth Hurley was as Vanessa Kessington. I thought she was Austin Powers' best side woman and really Get Smart is competing against that franchise. They just can't put any crap up there.

I bascially agree with what you are saying. My appreciation of Miss Hathaway increased tenfold after seeing her whip off her shirt in the back of that car in Brokeback Mountain. However, some actresses do fine not getting naked like Winona Ryder...sometimes it's better to tease your fans instead of giving it all to them. Natalie Portman is not very busty, so she should probably keep her top on so as not to disappoint. Keira Knightley was topless in a film and after seeing her little bee stings, I became much less interested in her. Yes, it is very shallow but that is human physiology and psychology for you...it's just the way it works.

I don't think that is going to work at all. I love Steve Carell as Smart and I think Anne Hathaway could probably do a good job with the role of 99, but together --- they just do not mix.

I am hoping that they tweak the story a bit so that there is no serious romantic relationship between them. Maybe Smart can lust after 99 during the course of the movie and then she can introduce him to her mother at the end....mmmmm Agent 99's Mom.

I'm pretty sure she was born around the time of my last dental checkup, but for spunky (heh) cuteness, Hathaway can't be beat.
Don't think she'll be gettin' nekid though. She can do pretty funny too, i imagine, but I don't think anyone has given her room yet to be herself (or she hasn't found it) but Carrell is quirky enough to bring it out in anyone.

When he says "Would you believe...you're surrounded by three boy scouts with slingshots?" we'll see the desperation that brings him to that lie! A 20 year age difference is really no big deal anymore

    by triumph poops!

Seriously, maybe it's just me since I live and work out here in Los Angeles where you constantly see couples like that, but pairing Carell with Hathaway seems fine to me. It's GREAT casting for both roles and I think someone above said it best -- Hathaway has always played roles that skewed her actual age DOWN, so mentally you're just conditioned to think of her as being younger than she actually is. Besides, the Carell/Hathaway age difference is LESS than Michael Douglas Jr and Catherine Zeta-Jones, who actually share the SAME birthday and are thus EXACTLY 25 years apart. And let me tell you, if I was Michael Douglas and I had a chance to nail Catherine Zeta, I'd have been all over that -- and I'm sure most of you would have been too! And if you want to talk age point spreads in terms of a couple, here's one for the geeks out there: James Doohan -- yes, Scotty on STAR TREK -- was THIRTY SEVEN YEARS older than his wife, with whom he had children. In fact, right off IMDB trivia (quote): "In 1974, Wende met her future husband, James Doohan, at a theater performance and married later that year. Wende was 17, and Doohan was 54."
