Game Releases for the Week of 11/19-11/26

Another big week of gaming excitement! Dan here with this weeks round-up, which includes yet another new section to encompass the mighty Wii, the sillily-named yet oddly-compelling game machine from Nintendo. Personally I'm still not 100% convinced about the whole thing -- I just don't see myself swinging shit around in front of my tv after work when I'd much rather be sitting in a couch not moving at all. Then again, I felt the same way about the DS originally, not wanting to draw on a stupid screen, but here I am now, scribbling away with the best of 'em. Also interesting this week is the PS3, which launched a few days ago yet has absolutely no commercial releases this week. Whoops!

Wii

11/19 Excite Truck - First-person racer that has been billed as the spiritual sequel to the timeless Excitebike, this is but one of 5 launch-day racers for the Wii, all of which are controlled by holding the Wii-mote sideways. The hook with this one, other than the "EXCITE" name-recognition, is a distinct sense of speed, as you fly through most levels thanks to strategically placed jumps.

11/19 The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - See game of the week, below.

11/19 Monster 4X4: World Circuit - Appearing earlier this year for the Xbox, the then poorly-reviewed title gets a retooling for the Wii, with the emphasis obviously placed on the Wii-mote's unique ability to be held sideways and used as a steering wheel. Ubisoft is even sweeting the deal by including a rubbery snap-on wheel in the box (the cover-art really hides this fact).

11/19 Cars - Another racing title with a similar Wii control scheme, this is just the console title released previously, generally regarded as a solid, kiddie-friendly racing game.

11/19 Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 - Another PS2 port, this fighting game features several control options, including the ability to use a traditional GC controller. Of course most Wii owners will opt to use the Wii's motion control, which involves holding down combo buttons then performing a specific "gesture" to do one of several attacks.

11/19 The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy - Relesaed back in September for the PS2, this Super Smash Bros. wannabe will also feature a choice between Wii gestures and plugging in a GameCube controller.

11/19 Madden NFL 07 - Much has been made of the fact this title certainly looks nowhere like the next-gen versions on the PS3 and 360. However if Nintendo and EA is to believed, gamers will be so enthralled with waving the Wii-mote around they'll hardly notice the blocky characters. The Wii specific gameplay involves mimicking the actions of football, like hiking and throwing gestures.

11/19 GT Pro Series - Another Ubi racer with a free snap-on wheel, this is a retooling of a Japan-only GameCube street racing game.

11/19 Red Steel - Besides Zelda, this the launch title to watch on the Wii, an action-packed FPS that puts the Wii motion-controller through its paces. Involving gunplay using the controller to aim, and sword-fighting using the controller to slice, at E3 the game sharply divided critics but looks hella fun to me!

11/19 Rampage: Total Destruction - It can't be a game launch without a Midway franchise, can it? Released on the other consoles back in April, this is pretty much the Rampage you played yet with flashy new graphics and power-ups. No word as to the Wii-specific abilities.

11/19 Rayman Raving Rabbids - Rayman has been absent on the consoles for some time now, but personally one of my favorite franchises returns in this large collection of mini-games. Designed obviously with the Wii controller in mind (it is scheduled for release on the other consoles as well), gameplay is a varied mix of on-rails shooting-gallery action and strange mini-games, like using the Wii-mote to swing and hurl cows into the air.

11/19 Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam - A unique Tony Hawk game specific to the Wii, gone is the open-world feel of the recent Tony Hawk games in favor of a downhill racer in the vein of SSX, EA's popular snowboarding game. The Wii controller is used to steer, obviously, and perform tricks.

11/19 Marvel: Ultimate Alliance - Wii gestures abound in this port of the popular action brawler, and you'll be flailing about as you attempt to perform special moves, and shaking the Wii controller and nunchuck furiously as you perform normal attacks.

11/19 Call of Duty 3 - The first FPS on the console, COD3 will be a test of just how the whole Wiimote/nunchuck combo functions in this type of game. Using the Wii controller to aim and the thumbstick on the nunchuck to move, the Wii capabilities do sound enticing to this FPS veteran. The Wii even adds unique features like the ability to lean around corners by tilting the controller.

11/19 Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz - The SMB series has arguably been getting stale recently, though if early reviews of this title are to be believed, it has been revitalized by the unique Wii motion control.

11/19 Happy Feet - Move the ridiciously cute pengiun characters around using the Wii-mote in this port of last weeks movie tie-in.

11/19 Trauma Center: Second Opinion - Just when your hand-strain from the first DS title was healing, here comes the Wii version, intent to destroy your entire arm. Atlus is attempting to translate the point-and-click pseudo-medical gameplay to your TV.

11/19 SpongeBob SquarePants: Creature from the Krusty Krab - Released last month on every other console, the Wii port adds (obviously) Wii control, with a flight mode that players pilot by holding the Wii like a flightstick in an airplane.

11/19 Avatar: The Last Airbender - Another Wii port with tacked-on motion controls, players will be holding down buttons and making "casting" gestures, scaring the cat all night long.

11/21 Need for Speed: Carbon - Similar looking port that features the now-familar Wii racing control of holding the Wiimote and tilting the controll up and down to steer.

PS3

None

Xbox 360

11/21 Superman Returns - Just in time for the movie DVD, this Tiburon-developed title (Madden) goes the well-traveled route of the successful Spiderman games and puts the man o' steel into 80 square miles of a full-modeled Metropolis. Gameplay involves your standard action staples of punching and kicking, with some Superman standards like freeze breath and heat vision thrown in.

11/21 Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas - The Rainbow Six series gets a makeover in this new title, which repordedly manages to walk the fine line between out-and-out action and micro-managing your teammates to death. A new cover-system adds some GoW twists into the mix and 16 player action over XBL offers unlimited replayability. There's even a crazy feature that lets Xbox Vision camera owners map their own faces onto the characters.

11/21 College Hoops 2K7 - 2K Sports next incarnation of their college baseketball heads to the 360 for another round after last years decent reviews. With "updated mascots" and crouds leading the list of updates this time, don't expect major changes, but the same solid baseketball action 2K is known for.

11/22 Cabela's African Safari - A port from the PS2/PSP version, this discount title features 30 exotic species to slaughter mercilessly.

PSP

11/22 Tony Hawk's Project 8 - A little late to the party, the new game features a "bullet-time" like mode where the player can slow time to concentrate on performing tricks with the analog stick.

DS

11/21 Superman Returns - The open-world action of its big-brother 360 version is shrunk down to work the DS, and the results, at least according to reports from E3, are about what you'd expect.. horrible.

11/21 Dogz - Feed, bathe, and do all kinds of weird shit to your dogz in this title, one of the first in the upcoming Z series: Catz and Hampsterz are coming soon.

11/22 Totally Spies 2: Undercover - Promising "racing, puzzling, and fighting", this is based on the popular Cartoon network show.

Xbox

11/21 College Hoops 2K7 - See the 360 description.

11/21 Superman Returns - See the 360 description.

PS2

11/21 Superman Returns - See the 360 description.

11/22 Delta Force: Team Sabre - Delayed from two weeks ago. The followup to last year's poorly rated Black Hawk Down 3rd person shooter, the developers have promised the new version has tweaked the gameplay in 12 new levels and 24 multiplayer maps that can handle 32 players at once.

PC

11/20 Timothy and Titus - Some sort of Jesus game.. "Core Christian virtues and actions seamlessly integrated to provide a powerful Christian message!"

11/21 Agatha Christie Murder on the Orient Express - Traditional point-and-click adventure from the same people who made last year's "And Then There Were None" game.

11/21 Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Knights of the Nine Expansion Pack - Downloadable seperately from Bethesda's website, this package rounds up all the recent expansions for the game. Includes The Wizard’s Tower, The Vile Lair, The Thieves Den, Mehrunes’ Razor, Horse Armor, The Orrery, and Spell Tomes.

GBA

11/21 Back to Stone - Action adventure title from French developer Neko (Charlie's Angels).

11/22 Yggdra Union - Card-based RPG port from Japan.

Game of the Week:

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Wii, 11/21

Zelda fanboys, prepare yourself: If early reviews are to believed, this may be the best Zelda game ever. And since one of the earlier Zelda games, Ocarina of Time, is usually believed to be one of the best games ever, well, you can see where the hype is going here. So I'll try and make this short and sweet: What we have here is Zelda, with a new look that returns Link to his gritty-ish realitic look following the cartooney offshoot of Wind Waker, as well as a new control scheme, which promises to put the player into the game as never before. As you swing and slice the Wii-mote, so too does Link. With a mind-bending 70 hours of gameplay, and numerous side-quests and mini-games like fishing (which, as you'd guess, uses the Wii-mote to "cast" the line into the water), Zelda is epic, beautifuly designed, and packed with things to do.

Game I'm Playing:

Gunpey, DS, 11/14

Like Meteos and Lumines before it, Gunpey is another puzzle hit from the recent star developer of puzzle games, Q Entertainment. Actually originally created by the late, great, Gumpei Yokoi, better known to many as the father of the Gameboy, Q has put a cartooney sheen on the DS version of the game (the PSP version sports a slicker more Lumines-ish look though I much prefer the DS style.). Gameplay is interesting, and while not as instantly addictive as Meteos was for me, it's still grows on you. It's basically a touch of Tetris with some Columns thrown in. Blocks start at the bottom of the screen and progress upwards, and its the players job to move individual blocks up and down the columns to link up diagonal lines that then clear the line on the board. You can also string together lines to create combos. Only thing missing is play over Wifi, but multi-cart action with a friend is available.

    Why All The Hype

    by satman83

I mean i have read on the web that some have sold for around $2,500 USD on e-bay...WHY??? no good lauch line ups, and a console which Sony themselves admited is full of faults and not even full backward compatible (200+ PS1 & PS2 titles wont work on the PS3).
And yes am a Nintendo Fan, but even i can admit that apart from Zelda, theres no other game on the line up i really wanted. I did want Metroid Prime 3 but thats now not coming out in the UK until the end of Feb..so really.i mean. why the hype, theres no PS3 or Wii fan out their who can say apart from one game. that the lauch line ups are any good.

The big deal about the WII is its controller. So what's stopping Sony or Microsoft from developing the same controller for their systems as an add-on?

Nintendo protect their products legally. There isn't much to stop Sony or MS coming up with second rate versions, and they've done this in the past, with comparably inferior d-pads and analogue sticks, but I don't think they are too concerned about their whole direction being spoiled. I think they said they considered Sony's motion sensing controller as a compliment, since (wisely or not) they don't consider themselves in direct competition with Sony any more.

Just seems like an awefully big leap of faith to revolutionize the controller but not the graphics because ultimately Sony/Microsoft can invent a ripoff version of that but the WII cannot create a version of their graphics.

One thing I've found with Nintendo is that they always get off to a great start. Gamecube and N64 had great prospects off the starting line, and the same might be said for Wii. The Wii's sales suggest a similar scenario, but hopefully the amount of quality games doesn't peter out. They rely too heavily on their own software and not enough on 3rd parties. In my opinion, they still make the best games and Zelda seems to represent a return to top form since the various lukewarm GCN titles, but one developer can't hold an entire console. Even after coming third place last generation, Nintendo still make a ton of money (they always make a profit on all their cosoles, which is something of an anomaly nowadays), and I would argue that they could afford to have made the Wii either cheaper or more powerful at the current price. Sony lose a fortune for every PS3 they ship, as do MS with the Xbox 360. But let's face it: people buy Nintendo systems to play Nintendo games, so they don't usually sell fifty+ games for every system out there. Your argument is valid, but so is the argument that tons of people will go for a Wii +360 option, or even a PS3+Wii option rather than a PS3 plus 360. A powerful console with a steady stream of quality games plus an inexpensive one with Nintendo games is a win-win situation if you can afford it.

That's when Zelda launches for CG. Yeah, I know, could have grabbed a Wii, but I'll get a Zelda Wii and system when they make a Zelda and/or Mario Kart game from the ground up to be designed for the Wii. Right now, Twilight Princess was a CG game, so on the Cube (and save some bread) I shalt play it. I just really, really dislike that there's people playing a new console Zelda game right now and I'm not ... dammit.

Not that I don't have reservations, but I trust the other twelve reviewers who actually embrace "all this motion sensing nonsense" that the Gamespot guy (now infamously) complained about. If it turns out that he's right and everyone else is wrong (if there really is some kind of objectivity to the issue), then I can always take the game back and get the GC version, and still play it on the Wii with a GC controller. Twelve out of thirteen say they wouldn't go back, I just hope they're not just saying that to for some weird reason.

    Whats Wrong With The Wii

    by satman83

I really get sick of this stupid Sony-fanboy s**t..i really do.
I mean last year Sony mocked and made fun of the Wii-remote, so every sony-fan boy joins them. and at E3 we see that yet again Sony have ripped off someone elses idea, and yet again the sony-fanboys are there to kiss their as*. Yes i know that no one here has said this...but am talking in general. Nintendo has finally offered us gamers something that is truely new and exciting, i mean dont get me wrong i can be a graphics wh*re sometimes. but Wii offers gamers not only a very affordable gaming experience £179 ($250). But also when were we can acutally contoller the character, and even if Microsoft of Sony bring out rip off Wii-Remotes then let them i say. Am getting my Wii and i cannot wait to wave it around (yes i know, that sounded dirty)

The problems with the Sony console are launch issues that will be fixed. And Sony still aims for full backwards compatabiity through software emulation which will ensure every game works and will also drop the manufacturing costs once it's complete so they need no longer include the PS2 emotion engine component.

    by satman83

yes your right...but you also have to admit that this is something that should of been taken care of before launch. The Wii has zero hardware problems, where as the PS3 problems (such as backward capability)wont be fixed until a few more weeks to come, so image if you got your PS3, got rid of your PS2..but know find you cannot play you PS2 games???.
Oh and i personally cannot see a drop in console price until 1=the PS3 doesnt sell as well as expected as so Sony are forced to drop the price of the PS3. 2=By christmass.
But given that the PSP is a huge floop and is hardly selling any more, compared to the DS. Sony still have yet to drop its price, showing some form of moronic business sense.

    NES games on PS3...

    by johnno

Of interest, it seems some guys have already figured a way to emulate NES games on the PS3 through Linux http://tinyurl.com/ycn6ux So if the homebrew geeks can do it, then so much for Nintendo's Virtual Console :P Heck, it's probably possible to emulate Xbox and Xbox 360 games too, maybe straight from the disc (thoguh I'd predict hardware archietecture issues being hard to overcome) If this comes to pass, then that's what I'd call 'Playing Beyond'! :D Sony's console certainly does have enormous potential!

i would say the PS3...360 is already established, plust he PS3 has so much negativity behind it ever since E3. Am not saying it will bomb or kill off Sony, but compared to the Wii's price and contoller, and Microsofts current market dominace. Sony will have a hard battle on their hands.

    by pandamaster83

It's an interesting thought, but I think the market has grown immeasurably since the days of the Jaguar. Plus Sony and MS have big enough market shares going into the next gen that they shouldn't have to worry about the console being a complete flop. I think there's room for three just now. In actuality, despite me being a Nintendo fan, part of me originally wanted them to fail after the GCN, and start developing third party (then everyone, or at least me, would be happy with one system with lots of good games and also Nintendo's best projects). But when they unveiled the Wii, I decided that Nintendo failing and becoming third party would be about the least healthy thing for the industry, since they are responsible for most of the innovative progression. In third place, they are pioneers because they can't afford to be complacent, and I realise now that they wouldn't manage to be as innovative as a third party developer/publisher. Sony's long term PS3 success depends on how many PS2 fans cross over. I don't think it'll go the way of the Jag but I'd be surprised if it reproduces that huge PS2 user base at its current price. And as for Xbox360, even in the unlikely case that it looked as though it was about to fail in anywhere except Japan, MS would just thrown more and more money at it to keep its head above water.

you brought up some very good points, but also keep in mind that Nintendo does have a large number of third party games for the Wii. Also that Nintendo can afford to be complacent, i mean Nintendo is heads down the only company making any money from their consoles. Microsoft has another year untill they are out of the red and as for Sony, well given how their last finance report had them at almost -1.7billion in the red (due to negative PS3 views and the laughable PS3 pre-production issues) they wont be make any profit for a lond time to come. Where as Nintedo make around $100 per every console sold, hell they were even plaining on selling the Wii for £100 ($140) at one point. (but i guess they wanted more money).
Personally apart from graphics, i would really like to know what the PS3 will offer me as a gamer that the Wii or 360 wont offer, i cannot think of anything. can any of you???

...of eye candy. I have a roommate who only wants the PS3 because he's drooling over the graphics. I look at it this way: $600 for eye candy...the novelty will wear off quickly. Probably there'll be like 6-8 games I'll really want to play on it. NOT WORTH IT (for me). The Wii, on the other hand, makes me giddy as a school girl at Christmas just thinking about it. I don't even know why. Brand loyalty? The new remote? The association between Excite Trucks and Excite Bike that makes me nostalgic? Probabaly cuz I love Zelda and now I can be Link. Now if they'd juuuuust rolled out this controller with an updated version of their failed virtual reality system from yesteryear, they would OWN.

    Nintendo making a profit

    by pandamaster83

This is the argument I was making earlier: this isn't that great for the consumer. Nintendo could've charged less for the Wii, or made it more powerful and they could still have made a slight profit on their machines. At one point last year, they overtook EA as the most profitable publisher, probably as a success of DS games wroldwide. They are a big company, and they just flat out refuse to sell consoles that don't go at a profit. That's nice for them, not so great for the consumer. But I don't think this means they can afford to be complacent: if they made another Gamecube, ie: competing on a technical level with 360 and PS3, but not offerring anything more, it could've been their last home console, since they'd probably assess their situation and realise they could make a lot more just going third party, like EA. As it stands, they said HD can wait, just like they said (probably rightly so) that internet gaming can wait. Whether this pays off remains to be seen, but in five or six years, if they release their HD system with a proven, more immersive system of control which formed during the Wii's life-cycle, they'll be in a much better position than they would've if they'd chosen to go head on with Sony and MS at this point.

    Yeah

    by pandamaster83

When I said Nintendo were right about saying online gaming can wait, I meant during the Gamecube's lifecycle. After all, less than 10% of Xbox owners played online during that period. The Wii will have online gaming, but not right away. I think this is kinda stupid of them: they should've had this set up for the system's launch. It seems like they kind of rushed the system out to meet the PS3 and 360 for the holiday season, and thank God Zelda is there, because otherwise, it would've been a poor launch. Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime are clearly the true intended launch titles, and if Nintendo didn't feel the need to get the system out there as soon as possible, then the Wii would've hung back for a couple of months till those titles were ready, and a proven online system was prepared. Wii still has a better first year lineup than 360 but I think its true potential will be met in 2008. If it isn't, then they may be rushing out an HD system sooner than we think, or going third party with the exception of handhelds. That said, if Wii becomes what Nintendo wants it to be (ie. the ipod of consoles, appealing to a totally new audience, almost like a fashion accessory), it may have nothing to do with quality games and more with marketting and timing.

satman83, Wii has zero hardware problems? Ummm...

    by johnno

"UK, November 20, 2006 - The "wires" have been buzzing with the first reports from the Wii launch in the States. In comparison to the PS3 release, which was accompanied by masked robberies, drive-by shootings (with BB guns) and muggings, the Wii's electronic birth seemed a much friendlier affair.

The build up to the launch began with hardcore gamers camping outside big name stores like Best Buy, Wal-Mart and Fry's, to ensure they got their Wii when it went on sale at 12am on Sunday. However, once they got their new babies home, news of initial problems with both the console and the motion-sensing controller began rolling in.

It seems the main niggle (albeit only for an isolated few) appears to be an issue with the machine's firmware. Nintendo originally announced plans to release the console alongside a start-up disc including important firmware updates it didn't have time to pre-load onto the system prior to launch. However, someone clearly worked overtime at the Wii factory because the majority of consoles did ship with the latest firmware installed, therefore not requiring a separate disc. While this was good news for most gamers however, those who bought early production models still requiring the disc were left with a console that didn't work properly.

Other general problems being broadcast from across the Atlantic include trouble getting the Wii to connect online via a wireless router, the occasional issue with the remote not detecting certain movements and the devastating blow of the disc drive simply not reading games. Not too bad considering some of the teething issues experienced around the launch of Xbox 360, so we can safely say Miyamoto and pals are probably high-fiving each other while you read this."

And as for PSP, it's selling comfortably enough though nowhere near what DS numbers are doing. THe only failure was UMD movies as far as I see...

    by johnno

... online gaming for the next long while at launchfor the time being anyway, plus it doesn't have some of their other online features available yet... Not trying to be a pain in the ass to nintendo fans here, but c'mon, all systems and their launches have their ups and downs... frankly it so far seems that PS3 and Wii have minimal problems compared to the rushed 360... so let's be thankful...

    satman and pandamaster83 on prices

    by johnno

"Oh and i personally cannot see a drop in console price until 1=the PS3 doesnt sell as well as expected as so Sony are forced to drop the price of the PS3. 2=By christmass. But given that the PSP is a huge floop and is hardly selling any more, compared to the DS. Sony still have yet to drop its price, showing some form of moronic business sense."

Sony knows they have to bring the price down so it's not something unforeseen, if it's still at that price a year form now I'd be surprised because for one it probably means people are still buying the system at that price. Ways to slahs it are reducing components with software emulation for BC which will be 100% (plus online patching for the few games that don't make it), and if Blu-Ray takes off, then that will certainly boost Sony's revenue and the manufacturing costs of Blu-Ray components. I'd predict that they'd have to get it at lest to where MIcrosoft's price is now (which may make Microsoft reduce their price even further)

"This is the argument I was making earlier: this isn't that great for the consumer. Nintendo could've charged less for the Wii, or made it more powerful and they could still have made a slight profit on their machines."

You'll have to remember that Nintendo unlike Microsoft and Sony is not a multimedia/software/hardware giant, they're primarily a video game company that only focuses on videogames. So taking losses would be more troublesome for them than Sony or Microsoft who get revenue from other areas... They will never sell their's at a loss, which is frankly good business for them and keeps their shareholders and teh company wealthy despite coming in third. The other trouble is that Miyamoto? and Nintendo have a disappointing attitude, consumer wise, to game price drops etc. They feel that they should name a price and stick to it because, and I try to quote as I remember, "People catch on to price drops and will wait to purchase the game which can have drawbacks on developers' revenue, therefore the industry ought to name a suitable price for their product and stick to it." Nintendo looks like it'll only make moves when they notice Sony and Microsoft taking the lead to drop their console prices closer to theirs...

    $$$$$$$

    by fing fang foom

How do kids have the $$$ to buy a 599 dollar videogame system? Back in my day a system cost a hundred bucks. Damn.... They must sell drugs and rob people or steal out of their parents wallets, one ten dollar bill at a time. Or I can just imagine that rich asshole kid in 5th grade's daddy getting him one, and suddenly he's the coolest kid in school, even though no one really likes him. Now, everyone kisses his ass to go over his house and play for 2 minutes on his console. How's does a man with a wife and kids justify spending over half a grand to live in an imaginary world, neglecting his own flesh and blood? These company don't even make money on these things! Opium for the masses. Thrill killers and bleep bloppers. Need a fix, that's why. Bringing you back to that time of innocence, and to that time when you discovered the joy of destroying innocence. When the world was new, and we were learning how to stifle ourselves. And becoming procrastinators and whiners. What have we become? Ah, screw it... pass me the remote.

  • Microsoft already tried this with PC peripherals and convinced themselves that it's a flawed technology. Time will tell if they were just incompetent. Sony IS copying Nintendo. The SIXAXIS controller does have motion-sensing, but it is still not as capable as the wiimote. The Wii also has a sensor bar that allows the unit to know where the remote is in relation to the TV. That way, it can be used as a pointer for shooting games. Sony won't be able to do that without making a USB peripheral, and no one will buy that because they won't understand the value. Nintendo definately wins the controller war. Not to mention that Sony was too cheap to pay their lawsuit and include rumble in their new controller.

It's time to kill ALL fanboys

    by leopold scotch

I don't think the rivalry has ever been so volatile. I can say a lot of things in favour of each system, and I try to justify my preferences as much as I can. "Preferences" doesn't connote fanboyism, and although I can say things that are fanboyish at times, you can tell just from the tone of certain posts who is totally biased and who is a bit more diplomatic. 2007 is going to host the great battle of the fanboys. May it remain in the private sphere. Because when I argue in favour of something, I don't want my opinion associated with those horrific creatures.

Don't consider this some kind of sales pitch: one of my friends (a big Nintndo fan like myself) put it best when he said that the Wii has great potential but it had better have more games than the Gamecube. As it stands, the Wii is capable of presenting visuals at least two or three times as good as the Gamecube, although- like PS3 and Xbox 360- the launch titles are not indicative of the machine's visual potential. But if you can put up with games looking at least twice as good as Resident Evil 4, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and Metroid Prime (albeit with no High Definition resolutions) then viuals shouldn't be that much of a problem. Then again, if Wii games in 2007/2008 look the same as they do now (which I don't believe is going to happen), then there might be problems. For an example of Wii's philosophy, see Okami and Shadow of the Colossus on the PS2: in an age approaching photorealism, the "wow" factor now often stems from superb artistic design in the face of technical limitations.

Next, onto the games: if you don't have a Gamecube, Zelda is a must for Wii. The rest is take it or leave it just now, until Metroid Prime and Mario Galaxy arrive. As my friend said, and as pandamaster83 said above, the Wii's greatness depends a lot on titles that haven't yet been announced, since there are only a few third party titles that are sure to be great (like Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles). Having said that, on the strength of first party titles alone, the Wii's first year in terms of quality software looks better than the Xbox360s first year, although 360 is getting some great looking stuff around the corner. Nintendo promises to keep a much more consistent stream of quality games, and they are claiming much stronger third party support than they had for the Gamecube. While I personally don't consider the GCN a failure (although it wasn't up to SNES or N64 standards), I think the Wii has better prospects and if the potential is met (and the hardware really pushed) could be superb. If it isn't met and PS3 is still too expensive, what about the Xbox 360? With regards to when you should get your console, "early adoption" for the Wii is a much more attractive prospect than for the other two systems.

If you're looking for the most powerful console, the distinction between the 360 and the PS3 has been reported (after several comparissons) to be pretty much insignificant. Both are powerhouse beasts, and the rumours of the PS3 being by far the most powerful are unfounded. If you want a Blu-ray player and you want to play Final Fantasy and MGS4, by all means, dive in, but in terms of power, they're about neck-and-neck. Thanks for posting the paragraph code btw :)

Fing Fang Foom what are you talking about....

    by v3d

Foom said, "How do kids have the $$$ to buy a 599 dollar videogame system? Back in my day a system cost a hundred bucks."

What are you talking about? No system launched at $100. The Atari 2600 was $179 in 1977. (maybe PONG was $100)

Adjusted for inflation that would be $580 in todays money. So todays kid could buy one the same way I did, "back in the day". By working a crummy minimum wage job ($2.12 back then) and save my money.

Sure a lot of spoiled punks will have a system handed to them on a silver platter, but a lot of kids/teens will roll up there sleeves, work hard, and buy one for themselves. They all aren't dope smokin',lazy, spoiled punks.

The PS3 does NOT have better graphics than the 360. I've seen side-by-side comparisions of a racing game on the net and the PS3 version blurs textures together to save memory, while the 360 image was crisp and as clear as day. Trust me on this, if you are going for one of the high-end machines - get the Xbox360.

PS3 has its strngths over Xbox, its just dependent on the demands of the game.
