Season 1 just ended in Germany with horrible ratings!

    by derlanghaarige

They even showed the last few episodes of it every thursday midnight! But I like the show! And surprise: It seems like ZDF (The German channel who shows it)payed a lot of money for it, because they announced that they will show Season 2 next year anyway!
And hooray for a longer season 3!

    Thoughts...

    by danielkurland

They just got a 3 episode extension, so I'm assuming this back order of 7 is adding 4 to that 3, as opposed to adding 7 to that 3. I suppose it's a little disappointing, but better than nothing, and it just means those last 4 will be extra filled with plot. However, is it completely impossible that they get those final 2? It's only 2 episodes. I can understand the pessimism towards cancellation, but the show is getting the best ratings that it ever has, and really, what are they going to replace it with? A "Runaway" spin-off?

Is only 20 a good or bad sign?

    by drath

Does that have more to do with CW's limitations or does it mean they are still guarded about this show? It's better than a cancellation, so I'm happy. I'm thinking fans of any CW show should feel lucky to get more than just one more season--except maybe for Smallville which seems to be a rediculous hit (sorry, for that crap to be loved while Superman Returns is hated just adds more proof of the Superman Curse--it's Lois and Clark getting more seasons than the Bruce Timm animated series all over again!)

    by catvutt

I'm not sure I grasp the purpose of a 20 Ep order versus 22...seems kind of silly to be that close and not just show some confidence in it with the full order. I dunno. All I DO know, is the last two eps have been really solid, particularly the one two weeks ago. Not sure I buy Logan's Summer Escapade, though...if the writers are going to keep throwing up roadblocks to his relationship with V like that kind of erratic behavior, we need to see it on-screen, so we can buy into it a little more. He's been pretty much just wandering through the season to this point otherwise.

I think this is a good sign.

    by the outlander

If they where going to cancel the show they would just gone for the normal 22 and given Rob time to finish of the show properly and they might have said this will be the last season. As the article says they are probably just cutting costs, after all they can still sell the DVD set for the same price.

    by plum

Any time the show doesn't get cancelled, it's a good sign by VM standards. Getting a full season order? That's WONDERFUL. The 20 episodes will hopefully reduce strain on the writers and actors, though VM has finished more strongly than it's started in its first two seasons.

    by phantom einstein

Seriously. They're just a bunch of fangirls in love with Jason Dohring. They spent the whole goddamn summer trash talking Kristen Bell. The guy's not only a Scientologist; I want to punch him in the gut because all he fucking does is cry. Dude - stop going to the crying place every time, it's fucking pathetic. Open your mouth when you talk. Loose the pukka shells. Logan should get into a horrific car crash, get an extreme makeover, suffer vocal damage and have to relearn how to talk and come back as a totally different actor. JUST LIKE ON THE SOAPS.

    by mattcg

Probably for the best. This season has been ass so far. Most of the characters have been reduced to glorified cameos and the ones that do show up act so completely out of character it isn't funny. Not to mention that "Aerie Tuesday" shit and the crap new theme song. The new characters all suck, Veronica has been doing some freakishly stupid things lately and all in all if Jason Dohring were to fall into a fucking combine, I'd be the happiest male viewer of this show.

    by rockgolf

    Likeliest candidates:

    1) Keith's married girlfriend, played by Laura San Giacomo, Enrico's co-star on an old NBC sitcom. The giveaway will be if Ep 9 is titled "Just Shoot Me", or some variation.

    2) Veronica's Criminality prof. Cheating with the dean's wife cannot go unpunished.

    3) Piz. (Is that how it's spelled?) Likely title: "Piz offed".

    by nemesisdarkside

I've enjoyed s3 so far. While I don't love it as much as previous seasons, I'm still loving it.

When did it become cool to say stuff like "s3 sucks" without explaining why?

And what's with all the Jason Dohring hate. Dohring receives some of the best lines in the show. I do prefer when Logan and V weren't going out though. There banter was awesome when there were "snarky" towards each other.

And don't get me started on "shippers", I hate people who watch shows for that. Same goes for the Smallville 'shippers.

Never watch Veronica Mars with people just coming into the show. Last episode, a girl who wandered in and started watching dismissed VM as a "silly detective show." If only she knew how that hurt... And by the way, for every fangirl that watches the show for Jason Dohring, there's a fanboy that watches for Kristen Bell. And not for her talent.

    by danielkurland

I can understand the need to dumb dow nthe season a little to get more viewers, if it keeps the show on the air, then I don't mind, but other than that, I've been pleased with this season. I'm thinking Veronica's criminology prof will be the one killed, as there goes all of her scholarship and internship opportunities, and she has more of a personal connection with him. I'd really respect it if Piz or Parker died, but for whatever reason, I feel the prof's death would have more of an impct on Veronica. Also, the title to episode 9 is out, it's "Spit & Eggs".

You're absolutely right. It's like the writers were given a new mandate to Dawson Creek the male characters...And what's up witn Veronica putting up with that stupid roommate/rape-victim rushing into that bar, putting herself and Veronica in danger and Veronica not reading her the riot act after. In earlier seasons, Veronica would never suffer fools so lightly.

    by kabigon

Simple as that. No, season 3 isn't as good as the last two (mystery > mystery arcs) and yes, all the characters become weaker and more kindhearted, but it's still VM. Be glad you are getting it at all because i know i am.

It's not like RT has completely stuffed up the whole season. He's done amazing work with what he's been forced to do.

    Third season best start yet!!

    by rhaps0dy

Well this is great news! I consider myself a big fan of this show, yet i can honestly say that this season has had the best start to date!! Season 1 started slow and season 2 didn't pick up till like ep 5. As for this its been pretty damn solid! Certain characters i.e. mac, should remain a side part not a main character! As for logan his quality but i want him back messing around with dickus casablanca, whilst wallace should be in it more! I'm appreciating having a selection of arcs this season unlike season 2 were the one arc became so stretched it was a straight line! At least this way the writing has pace and continuity as the arc needs to be resolved in 9eps! As for the next murder vic its gonna be her professor i'm sure of it, the fact he just gave them a paper titled 'how to plan the perfect murder.' is a giveaway! Anyways this show rules along with this season and the cw would make such a mistake if they cancel this! Oh yeh as for the male characters...Weevil has been out as the dude is ill in real life, whilst logan is still there just needs his mate back, right now he aint got any friends! Plus i always like to see my characters change throughout seasons, its a sign of them changing through situations and surroundings, even my behaviour is somewhat different now to how it was three years ago!

about the first two seasons? If this is the road (VM-LITE)that he is going to travel, then walk it out to pasture and shoot it in the head and see if he can get a production deal at FX or HBO where he won't have to compromise the integrity of his vision.

    Accessibility

    by plum

I thought the "three mysteries" format was what made it accessible- that way you can come in in the middle of the season and not be completely lost, which was an especial problem in S2. I can sense network notes in some other aspects of S3, though- like the awful heavy-handed voiceovers in the last episode. Dear lord. I don't think VM is going down the toilet, though; it has, as usual, gotten off to a slow start and found its feet over time.

    by hell_bender

Flat-out stupid I mean. Not misplaced trust or a slip-up. Seconds after she realises she's been spiked, before the GHB really effects her; she walks away from the saftey of Campus Security and into a dark, isolated car park, knowing she won't be able to drive anyway.

The first being the text message in the season 2 finale.

i loved the season long mysteries, not the little mini plots we're being given this year. that's just lame. and where the hell is Wallace? what's the point of inventing a VM drinking game with one of the rules being the first person to say "FROTASTIC!" doesn't have to drink, if the fro is never actually around? also, i don't mind Dohring, but good lord, that kid is the KING of the "dramatic spin" when he talks. it's really annoying...is he dancing a la michael jackson in the billie jean video? and in addition...am i the only one who has noticed that weevil has doubled in size, while seeming to get even shorter?

Maybe too much of a been there, seen that already. Bring back Kevin Smith? Or something to give some pizazz. Logan backstory getting tired. Ratings did go up a very small amount this season. But not helpful that natural lead-in GILMORE GIRLS is down about 25%. Other shows on new network struggling too. Probably will get full year, but iffy for renewal. Show probably needs some kind of makeover plan to get another year.

    missed opportunity

    by johnnyangel

Veronica Mars missed an opportunity to make a strong emotional statement last week when Veronica was narrowly saved from being the next victim of the rapist. If she had been raped instead of the hackneyed cliche of rescue at the last moment, then that would have vastly increased the emotional stakes in a season that has felt a little flat, a little safe.

  • Nov 19, 2006 1:10:12 PM CST

    Nahhh

    by glodene

It would've been her second rape in two years. That would've devestated the poor girl. Considering all the fucked up things that has happened to her over the past two seasons plus last week, another rape would probably send V over the edge...As strong (emotionally) as she is, the girl can only take so much. I'm still waiting for her eventual post traumatic breakdown.

Because as another poster pointed out, it would've drawn further attention to what's possibly the SINGLE MOST STUPID and Out-of-character thing she's done, which is REALIZE she's drugged, and then trying to DRIVE rather than staying in a nice crowded area. I swear, I liked the ep a lot until that point, but my friggin' jaw dropped at that horrible writing decision.

    by trader groucho 2

Takei's character on Heroes is a bigshot Japanese executive shows up in the States with his boyfriend, er, bodyguard, to bring his (alleged???) son home, only to find the boy bending the space-ass continuum with Kock (Andy Dick's butt-baby love-child of Kirk and Spock).

Through a teen girl noir detective show, darkly

    by trader groucho 2

I saw RT speak at a SWN meeting the summer before VM premiered, and I distinctly recall his vision of the show as quite dark. I sincerely wish he could have taken it as dark as he said he wanted to. It could have been darker than Galactica and still have the snarky cultural reference and Maltese Falcon-style wit.

    VM in college

    by trader groucho 2

I'll defend where they went this thus far overall. First off, they didn't stretch out VM's high school career past two years. Junior year. Senior year. College. RT learned from watching Joss' mistakes (and there weren't a lot of those) with Buffy. RT I'm guessing didn't want to bring her in as the instant uber-badass in college, esp. when she's just a frosh and new to the territory. The Feminazis on-campus I think blunted somewhat the gravitas of the rape plotline. I agree with others here who have said the show needs an actual body count. My vote would be for the a-hole criminology assistant to get whacked and VM set up as the patsy. Then again I'd also have her taser Logan's nads and jump into bed with the criminology prof because, after all, freshmen do stupid shit in college and VM should be no exception. Oh, and how did VM dodge the freshman 15 weight gain?

the show's not perfect, but I still love it

    by oisin5199

yeah, the parking lot thing was kind of stupid, especially since she's been roofied before and should know better. But she had been really harsh and bitchy to Keith, the best damn single dad ever, and totally over the top with her mistrust. It's not season 6 Buffy with the darkness, but she definitely was spiralling down. I love her character, especially when she's not perfect and actually screws up (or actually acts her age) and has to learn from it. Anyway, I like this year better than last year. The bus crash thing was too drawn out and ridiculously resolved. As I said, it's not totally dark, but it's still pushing some envelopes with an entire arc about serial rape.
