HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX teaser poster is Vold-erific!!!

Published at:  Nov 16, 2006 3:29:33 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with the teaser poster for the next Harry Potter flick: ORDER OF THE PHOENIX. I've had... um... some uh... access to this installment. Can I say that without the animaniancs being unleashed on me? I don't know... But let's just say in the coming months you'll see some interesting stuff from me about this flick.

I like the poster, but then again I love the design for Voldemort. It's a good little tease... Enjoy!!!

    by frijole

How is Goblet of Fire "shit"? Granted it's a truncated version of the novel to be sure, but even with that in mind, I still think it has more entertainment value than any other movie in the series. Not as faithful as SS or COS, not as artful as POA... but it's still the one I've watched the most times. It moves fast, it's extremely funny (without betraying the growing darkness of the stories), it's action- packed and it progresses the most important story elements toward the next installment. Other than possibly moving a bit TOO fast in one or two transitions and the many (though insignificant in the grand scheme of things) deviations from the book... what is to hate?

    by caltsoudas

The problem with movie Voldemort is that they watered down his appearance too much. He's actually supposed to be a badass cross between a human and a snake with: blood red eyes, sharp viper fangs, and snake nose. All they kept was the snake-like nose and so now he looks like some weird-ass-alien-but-not-really type guy. Oh well.

I'm surprised they're releasing this movie so late into summer break. This one is supposed to be the shit.

Was never really a fan of this book, in my opinion the movie was better but they did drop the ball on the dragon sequence. But the last twenty minutes was the best of all the films so far. Its a better story than Goblet Of Fire, and its darker than Prisoner Of Azkaban...i mean about as dark as a series like this can get. One great thing about it is that Gary Oldman will be in it throughout the whole film. At least that was the case in the book.

If a Potter film is worth a year of Alfonso Cuaron's life, it's probably worth two hours of yours, right? And, like, where did this consensus that Goblet of Fire is terrible come from? I mean, if that's your opinion that's your opinion but jeez, for family films I'd say they're raising the bar pretty high. And that dragon sequence - I'd say that was the best dragon yet in a movie...

The films are slowly getting better as the series progresses. If you campare the kids' acting in PS to waht theyre like in GOF you'll see what i mean. I agree with caltsoudas though in that Voldemort's appearance isn't 'snakey' enough, nor his voice high enough but GOF was easily the best one. caltsoudas and cromwell... Voldemort

    by frijole

Just some thoughts. That's honestly a mind's eye sort of thing. With the exception of not having red eyes, I think Voldemort looked exactly as described. Maybe not exactly as you (and others)envisioned, but pretty spot on to what I (and others) envisioned. Pale, almost waxy skin? Check. Flat, slit-like nose? Check. Sharp, pointy teeth? Check. As for the eyes, when you have someone like Fiennes in the role, you can't hide him TOO much. Honestly, had they put contacts or an effect on his eyes, he'd be unrecognizable. As it stands, the only way you can even SEE Fiennes in there is THROUGH the eyes. Some have mentioned that his characterization is softened. I don't think so. He fancies himself a "Lord" and is suitably "regal" in that respect. He's also somewhat weakened, but at the same time bored with Potter and his shenanigans and thinks the whole mess is beneath him- which I think is where the aloofness comes from. I know many disagree... But I find his look and performance MORE than acceptable...

Frijole -- on hiding an actor behind too much makeup

    by theseeker7

Now I've never read any of the books so I'm not here to get into the whole thing of what Voldemort ended up looking like on film versus what you readers thought he would this whole time based on description, but I wanted to point out I think your point that "when you have an actor like Fiennes in the role you can't hide him too much" is faulty. After all, look at Gary Oldman in "HANNIBAL". If they hadn't of told you up front, most people, I'd venture to say even big Oldman fans, wouldn't have known that was him while watching the entire movie. And obviously Oldman is one of the globe's very finest actors. I think in an area like this you don't cater to the actor, that just if you have someone "that good" that you make sure the audience can know it's him standing there. No, you ALWAYS serve the CHARACTER, no matter what. If in doing whatever they needed to do to achieve the full cinematic effect for Voldemort mean Fiennes was basically unrecognizable as himself, than that's what you need to do. It worked for Oldman. (mind you, I also never read "Hannibal" to see what the book's physical description of that character was, and so if they nailed it well enough with how they presented Oldman onscreen)

    Reply to Talkback

  • Nov 16, 2006 11:41:05 AM CST

    Seeker...

    by frijole

I think it's a different situation. Oldman's role in Hannibal was ABOUT him being unrecognizable. You can say the same about John Hurt in The Elephant Man. I get what you're saying and understand that it works in favor of the part oftentimes when there is no way to pick the actor out of the make-up... but in this case, I think it's different. Whether it's giving him more leeway to emote, allowing him a way to get progressively ummm... scarier (?) as his power grows, or again, just to capitalize on having a big name actor (probably the biggest name in the series so far) in the role. Funny that Oldman and Hurt have also been in the series. Heh.

can't put my finger on what i disliked about GoF:

    by newc0253

except that i know i didn't love it. Goblet of Fire is one of my favourite books in the HP series plus the choice of Mike Newell to direct with a score by Patrick Doyle seemed like a dream ticket. and yet the whole tone seemed off somehow. Newell managed to carry over the dark tone of Cuaron's Prisoner of Azkaban, but somehow missed capturing either the substance or the magic of the story the way that PoA did. it didn't help that Doyle's score was so fucking insipid either (they need to bring back John Williams for the Half Blood Prince). hell, i knew going in that even a 3 hour movie would have difficulty doing justice to the book, but - with the exception of a couple of scenes - it just didn't work. Fiennes is a great choice for Voldermort, though.

Frijole, are you going to the movie to see Fiennes or

    by excaliburffolkes

to see Lord Voldemort? Meaning no disrespect to Fiennes, but I'm guessing most people would prefer to see Lord Voldemort. Layer him up with as much make-up/fx as is required to fully convey the character. If the actor is good, he'll shine through anyway. The gold standard in this regard is Tim Curry as Darkness in Ridley Scott's "Legend". Every inch of Tim Curry is hidden under tons of make-up, contacts, false teeth, prosthetics etc. yet the charisma and power of his performance radiates on the screen.

Rowling's description of Voldemort is meant to look like (by the American editions' illustrator herself)-- 1) on the back fo Quirell's head: http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/gallery/albums/grandpre/julybig.jpg -- Obviously I still think Ralph Fiennes looks really good, but they could have made his eyes pink and his teeth a little more vampire-like. I really find the eye thing to be such a minor quibble. I mean hell, how many times do we hear about Harry's jet black hair in the novels... and Radcliffe's hair is brown (albeit a dark brown) but nothing close to jet black. I never hear any complaints about that. Oh and Fienne's Voldemort DOES have sharp teeth. Maybe not snake fangs (which I imagine would have made speaking a bit unwieldy) but sharp, jagged teeth (kind of like how it looks when someone has their teeth filed down to points for caps... but without the caps). Oh and as for bringing up Curry's Darkness. He HATED the contacts and protested them (check the featurettes and commentaries on the special edition) and pleaded (to no avail obviously) "at LEAST give me my own eyes! they're all i've got under all this!"- or something to that effect. So yeah. It isn't that I don't think you all have valid points. I just don't see it as that big an issue.

I'm sure a bunch of folks made great points. But I started reading and it just sounded like a broken record. It doesn't matter if the films are like the books anymore. None of them are. Even the first one, which was adapted so close to the original page that, personally, I think it heald the film back in places, STILL left things out and changed others. The films are their own world now, totally seperate from the books. And in my mind, the books are just 1000 times better. So much more richly detailed. So much more plot, backstory and subtext. But there are people, many in fact, that I talk to about HP that only live in the film world. I think that's cool. More to the point I think it's one of the cooler things about the HP phenomenon. So, yeah, sure. This book, by all rational thought, should be nearly impossible to make as one film. Certainly there's no way it can be done without chopping MASSIVE pieces of the story. But I don't care. It's the next HP film, and I want to see it.

I'm a Christian, and I think Harry Potter is evil...

    by zacdilone

...that's right, you heard me. He's evil. The Sorting Hat said it himself--"You would have done well in Slytherin." Mark my words, Harry will turn and then Ron will have to do him in. Then Ron and Hermione will get married, and 8 1/2 months later Hermione will give birth to a child...with a lightning-shaped scar! That's right, you heard it here first. Watch out for "Harry Potter and the Freakish Child from Bob Jones University," coming soon to a theatre near you!

That thinks Goblet of fire was the best HP movie yet? Azkaban was good, but Goblet just was the most entertaining and faithful to the book

    Nice tagline

    by sepulchrave

Boring image; something too airbrush-y and slimy about it and the hand looks flat. If you're going to to a forced perspective, you'd be well advised to get the contrast up a bit; this looks 'ironed out' and the hand and wand don't 'pop' out in fron tof the face, which should be migh on invisible, merely suggested at, not staring at us as it is here.

Good image, bad art, simple as that.

    Also, make up aside...

    by sepulchrave

THAT IS RALPH FIENNES. You can talk about pig-noses and trolls all you like, but you cannot deny that they have got possibly the finest, most subtle British classical actor working today, Amon Goethe himself, to play the big V. Can't you people see past the latex? Anyway; the description that seems most important to me is that his voice is thin, his eyes wide and slitted, his nose missing and all his features seemed 'to have run and melted, as though in a furnace'. I think Fiennes is fine, if you'll pardon that. More nit-pickery from the usual suspects.

Problem with 'Goblet of Fire' teh movie...

    by ribbons

...was that H@rry was happy at the end. In hindsight, he seemed pretty well-adjusted at the end of Book 4 as well, but since he becomes something of a damaged, paranoid asshole in 'Order of the Phoenix,' it would have been nice if the filmmakers set things up a little. Hermione saying "Everything's going to change now, isn't it?" and Harry just clapping a hand on her shoulder and giveing her a big, dopey smile was a serious "wtf" moment. You're partially responsible for a kid being murdered right in front of you. The man who wants you dead is back and almost killed you. [/rant]

    The problem with GOF

    by effroyables

is that the director has no connection with the books. Newell did not direct the actors to study their characters (ie Gambon as Dumbledore) and everything seems rushed and smashed together. The book was amazing and the movie sucked ass.

    Ok...

    by jaka

...so I read the entire Talk Back. Not too bad. lol Lemme add though, that I'd love Cuaron to come back for film 7 (it should have been film 6 though, book 3 and 6 feel most alike, to me). But does anybody else suspect, as I do, that a "big name" director may be involved with the finale? I've been thinking that since the possibility of all 7 books being made into films started looking realistic. Which was probably after the second one.

No one is complaining about Fiennes being cast

    by excaliburffolkes

in the role of Lord Voldemort. The question at hand was whether or not he required more make-up/fx to better look the part. The series' ultimate villian really should look convincing, not just sound it. Details count. Too bad the last two directors never figured that out.
