Massawyrm Evokes A NIGHT AT THE ROXBURY While Reviewing TENACIOUS D IN THE PICK OF DESTINY!!

Published at:  Nov 15, 2006 10:08:13 AM CST

Hola all. Massawyrm here.

In a world of lies and deception…where trailers sell movies that are never as good as they seem…only ONE MOVIE…DARES…to suck just as bad as its trailer does. That movie is Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny. No other film has the sheer balls to tell one joke, and only one joke, for 90 minutes straight. Over and over and over again. The same joke. Repeated. Like a sample loop in a rap song.

Jack Black IS…JACK BLACK…in the role of his career! His WHOLE career! Kyle Gass IS…KYLE GASS…in his one band that was actually good, and the one role anyone knows him for! And Tim Robbins IS…THE CAMEO…that you can now officially set your watch by!

Come on. By now you should probably know what to expect from this movie. If you’re one of those folks who simply loves Jack Black in anything and everything he does, then you’re probably going to find this funny. Because this is everything he’s done before condensed into 90 minutes. It’s almost like a best-of reel…without actually being something worth having the word “best” associated with.

And if…I don’t know…for some unfathomable reason…you think Jack Black’s shtick has…gotten a bit…tired. Well, this is gonna be 90 laugh free minutes that will remind you exactly why the Tenacious D TV show lasted for exactly six episodes. This is all of the old jokes of Tenacious D without any of the more brilliant moments.

So let me get this straight. Tenacious D is funny…because they are a mediocre band…that thinks they’re the greatest band in the world, except that they really know they’re a mediocre band? So they’re like a self-aware version of Krokus. Okay, that’s funny. For a while.

Look, I’ve had fun with the D. But this ain’t Wonderboy. This ain’t Fuck Her Gently. Instead, every song in this, every single song…is about The D being the greatest band in the world. Every conversation…is about them becoming the greatest band in the world. It’s like the more annoying SNL movies that try to turn a skit that was barely funny at five minutes and stretch it out for…no wait a minute. That’s exactly what this is. This is the skit that went too far.

Some of the cameos are smirk-worthy and Dave Grohl once again kicks total ass as the devil (sadly only for two minutes of screentime.) And aside from that, this is exactly what it looks like from the trailer. In fact, some of the movies best jokes are in there. This isn’t the Blues Brothers. This is A Night at the Roxbury. You either love the joke so much going in that you’ll eagerly watch it again and again or you don’t and you won’t. I didn’t. I enjoyed The D early on and was hoping that in doing a film they might expand a little upon the theme. Sadly, they didn’t.

Until next time friends, smoke ‘em if ya got ‘em.

Massawyrm

Wow, I’m gonna be an extremely popular fellow today.

I've been fearing this film would be exactly as you've described it. Now I know that I can save my $20. Much appreciated.

    A Night at the Roxbury

    by myspoonistoobig

Yeah, it sucked, but it was funny in its simpleminded idiocy. But Jack Black is getting pretty old -- Nacho Libre was a big miscasting of him, and I have been worried that this looks like the TV show literally turned into a movie (i.e. the same jokes).

    Ah well.

    by mr. nice gaius

That's pretty much what I figured; not that I'm the biggest "D" fan by any means. But I did enjoy the HBO show and hoped for something worthwhile here. It just seems that this movie would have been better served had it been made about 5 years ago.

And yeah, I totally get what you mean. The 'D were funny for about 5 minutes, then Jack Black's hamming really got to me.

Because all they ask in return is for you to squeeze out a Clevland Steamer on their chests. Is that too much to ask? They know they suck. That is why they want you to shit on them.

    by el scorcho

I'm still excited for this. I know it won't reinvent the wheel. But as far as the show only lasting 6 episodes, that wasn't because of poor ratings. They were offered a full season of 30 minute episodes, but HBO wanted creative control. The D said no, and the rest is history. And *blush*, A Night at the Roxbury was my favorite movie back in middle school.

Actually, yes. That stuff factors into the plot. ------ Don't listen to this turd, the movie is fantastic, bookended with some thrilling doses of rock opera. It's hilarious. And it hates overfishing as well.

    Not surprised.

    by dromens

I completely agree with those who said this is five years too late. They're still milking their one album for God's sake. For something like this to work, they needed to strike while the iron was hot. I haven't heard crap from the D in a couple years, so who cares about them.

What is funny about this movie is that the same kind of talkbackers who will sit and bitch and hate a movie they've never seen, were all a twitter and in love with a movie they've never seen. Also, not surprising.

I am surprised to see someone who thought Jack was miscast in Nacho Libre, which I loved. My guess is that they were expecting Jack to be Jack and not a character, which you know, is what actors are supposed to be in movies, characters, not themselves.

    Massawyrm....."you're fired" (Trump impression here)

    by phantomspazzz

There's one word that describes Massa perfectly. That word is...Tool. Because dammit Massawyrm if you arent the biggest tool on aintitcoolnews then no one is. Every review you write blows and your opinions suck. We the talkbackers of AICN officially withhold your opinion license because obviously tools like yourself shouldnt have opinions and your opinions blow the big one. As a matter of fact I think Kevin Smith had you in mind when he wrote "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back". Reading your words makes me want to punch my computer screen hoping that somehow it invokes pain on you.....then it pisses me off even more because I hurt my hand and broke my monitor. I bring all this up not because of this review, but your collective portfolio of reviews that you post on this here glorious website. The other thing that pisses me off is that stupid ass contest you had a few months ago where people drew a picture of you. I bet you just had the BIGGEST hard on as you downloaded attachment after attachment and your ego grew 15 times larger. Every one of you talkbackers know what im talking about. You know how your just walking around grocery shopping or see a guy standing in line and you just shake your head thinking OMG this fag is the biggest tool and if someone doesnt dump their pop on him in ten seconds I will....that equals Massa.

I thought most of ya love Massawyrm's reviews. When the fuck did Tenacious D become a sacred cow? (Make that 2 sacred cows). Maybe his review was short on description because it was, as he noted, a one-joke flick. You think "Pick of Destiny" deserves a thorough review filled with nuance? Fuck off.
