AICN GAMES: Games Of The Week 11/13 - 11/18!!
Game Releases for the Week of 11/12-11/18
It's the biggest week in console gaming history! Or at least, that's what Sony might have you believe. Dan here with this week's guide, and holy crapola, it's a big one. Over 120 games will be battling for your attention this week, including Sony's PS3 launch line-up, which while not overwhelmingly strong, contains one or two interesting-looking games for those of you who are planning on shelling out the cash for the next Playstation. Er, I mean, PLAYSTATION. I'm going to keep the descriptions short this week just because there's so much, but don't forget to check back next week: it's Wii time!
PS3
11/14 NHL 2K7 - It's a port of 2K Sports hockey game, which got good reviews when it was released on the 360. Unlike the 360 version however, for the PS3 you'll be shelling out $20 more.

11/14 NBA 2K7 - It's a port of 2K Sports basketball game, which got fairly good reviews when it was released on the 360. And like the NHL game, 2K has likewise jacked the price up on the 360 version. (Are we noticing a theme here?)

11/14 Genji: Days of the Blade - I will write this description without making a "massive damage" quip... I will write this description without making a "massive damage" quip... All joking aside, early previews say this is a fast action brawler with impressive visuals, crab or no crab.

11/15 Ridge Racer 7 - It's Ridge Racer, on the PS3. Reportedly if you're running this on a non-HD monitor, prepare to be under whelmed.

11/15 Call of Duty 3 - Like how CoD was there for the 360 launch, EA trots out its current most successful FPS for the PS3. Reviews of last weeks COD3 for the 360 are strong, if not great, and the PS3 adds support for the SixAxis, the PS3's answer to the motion-sensitive Wii.

11/15 Resistance: Fall of Man - If any game could be described as the launch title to get it would be this one, garnering massive amounts of hype, with some calling it the PS3's Halo. It's a FPS set in a dystopian future world with the requisite guns and vehicles. Of note is the impressive-sounding 40 person deathmatches over Sony's (free) online service. 40 players with no lag? If Insomniac can pull that off, color me impressed.

11/15 Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire - Giant mechs attack in Bandai's continuing series, which had a rocky start at early showings of this game but apparently has cleaned up nicely for release. Staying true to the Gundam universe, don't expect super fast mechs here: gameplay is slow, methodical, and tactical.

11/15 Madden NFL 07 - The game that arguably moved the most PS2's shows up at launch to bat for the PS3. Have the frat boys already picked it up for the 360? Will they balk about using the SixAxis's wonky motion control system?

11/15 Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 - Out last month for the 360, now for the PS3, don't expect much changed for the PS3 other than some basic support for the PS3 controllers motion sensing capabilities.

11/15 NBA 07 - Sony's own basketball game is of course present at launch, and despite the so-so reviews of this years PS2 version, the PS3 incarnation hopes to garner some attention with some innovative uses of the Sixaxis -- apparently you put the controller over your head to shoot free throws.

11/17 Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom - First appearing on the PSP, it's your basic Diablo-esque whack-em brawling action, all prettied up for the PS3 launch. Impressive grass and tree physics abound.

11/17 Need for Speed: Carbon - EA's successful racing franchise shows up for the PS3 at launch just like they did with Most Wanted last year for the 360, though the only difference this time is the PS3 version is late to the party: Carbon was released on Microsoft's console 2 weeks ago.

Xbox 360
11/14 WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2007 - It took over a year for the 360 to get a wrestling game, but as always, the WWE delivers with this next-gen version of last years 2006 game.

11/14 Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 - The improbable breast physics of the first game return for another round of volleyball action, with a bunch of new modes to play such as jet-skiing and dangerous-sounding "butt bumping competition".

11/15 Bionicle Heroes - Lego's Bionicle franchise gets a multi-platform release this week, with a 3rd person shooter that does not really tinker with the formula of the last Lego game, the wildy popular Lego Star Wars (this game is developed by the same people who brought us those two games).

11/15 Eragon - The only interesting thing about this up-and-coming franchise of books, movies, and games is that it was written by a 15 year old kid. The game, meanwhile, appears to be your typical 3rd person action title in the vein of the LOTR action games.

11/15 Sonic the Hedgehog - Sonic's purported reinvented design for the next-gen systems still plays a lot like the previous 3D Sonic games -- that being, a frenetic race through giant levels where one wrong move can send you flying off a platform and into the abyss below. (A demo is available on XBL)

PSP
11/14 Metal Slug Anthology - Includes 7 Metal Slug games: METAL SLUG, METAL SLUG 2, METAL SLUG X, METAL SLUG 3, METAL SLUG 4, METAL SLUG 5, and METAL SLUG 6. Considering how many quarters I waisted on these popular side-scrolling action games in the arcade, that, my friends, is a deal.

11/14 Star Trek: Tactical Assault - Not to be confused with the upcoming Legacy Star Trek game, the portable version nevertheless features similar 3D action, though without the Shatner.

11/14 Gitaroo Man Lives! - The innovative yet relatively unknown rhythm based game for the PS2 gets a port for Sony's handheld.

11/14 Xiaolin Showdown - Based on the cartoon, this is an action game with cartooney graphics (makes sense, doesn't it?).

11/14 Yu-Gi-Oh: GX Tag Force - Amazingly enough the first Yu-Gi-Oh game for the PSP, fans of the card battlin strategy game will be able to link up with 3 other players via Wifi (local only).

11/14 Eragon - See the 360 description.
11/14 Gunpey - Created by the late, great, Gumpei Yokoi on the Wonderswan, Q Entertainment (Lumines) has converted the puzzler to the handhelds. Gameplay is, as expected, innovative, involving moving blocks around to link up diagonal lines that then clear areas on the board.

11/14 NFL Street 3 - EA's "Street" franchise started with Basketball, then moved to Football with pretty much the same level of success, and is now upgraded for the PSP. New wireless modes offer online action and new mini-game modes offer PSP players more variety.

11/14 EA Replay - Now this one is neat.. What you've got here is 14 or so titles from EA's vaults: B.O.B., Budokan, Desert Strike, Jungle Strike, Haunting Starring Polterguy, Mutant League Football, Road Rash, Road Rash II, Road Rash III, Syndicate, Ultima: The Black Gate, Virtual Pinball, Wing Commander, and Wing Commander: Secret Missions. Wing Commander!!

11/14 Pocket Racers - Little-car racing game that sounds a heckuva lot like a Micromachines rip-off. But hey, it's cheap!

11/16 Mortal Kombat: Unchained - This one looks interesting: It's basically just your traditional Mortal Kombat action with none of the adventure-game shenanigans prevalent in recent console versions. It even has a Puzzle Fighter mode in there for when you get tired of ripping spines.

11/17 Sonic Rivals - Ahh, who needs the fancy 3D Sonic when 2D Sonic plays just as well? That seems to be the theory behind the PSP Sonic game (completely different than the console versions). Of note here is the title uses 3D to render the characters and levels but plays from a strict 2D perspective.

DS
11/14 Yoshi's Island DS - See game of the week, below

11/14 Eragon - See the 360 description
11/13 Happy Feet - VG version of the ridiculously curtsey CG penguin movie that will probably make a billion dollars when its released this week.
11/14 Spider-Man: Battle for New York - Players can control Spidey as well as the Green Goblin in this retelling of the Spider-Man origin story. Gameplay is inspired by the popular console version with a variety of web-based attacks and a comic-book look.

11/14 Charlotte's Web - A beloved childrens classic gets what will no doubt become a beloved video game. The handheld versions contains an adventure mode as well as many mini-games.

11/14 Final Fantasy III - Continuing the onslaught of FF games, this weeks offering is a remake of FF3, notable since the original never saw light o day in the US. Directed by one of the original designers of the NES game, it features impressive 3D graphics on the DS.

11/14 Bionicle Heroes - See the 360 description
11/14 Monster Bomber - Kiddie-friendly DS puzzle game that challenges players to hit colored monsters with colored bombs.

11/14 Disney's Chicken Little: Ace in Action - It's been some time since the movie, but Avalanche Software ("Tak") nevertheless brings fans this action title, based on the "movie within the movie" and features tank and vehicle-based gameplay.
11/14 Gunpey - See the PSP description.
11/14 Tamagotchi Connection: Corner Shop 2 - Last year's original got poor reviews.

11/14 Asphalt: Urban GT 2 - Pretty nice graphics (for the DS) highlight this racing game, a sequel to 2004's poorly-reviewed title. A new engine and new developer hope to boost review scores a little.

11/14 Brain Boost: Beta Wave - English port of one of the many Brain Age knock-offs that quickly appeared in Japan following the released of that game, this one has 5 brain training games.

11/14 Brain Boost: Gamma Wave - Not to be confused with the pseudo-science in the above game, this one is just to help your brains Gamma Waves, which help problem solving and memory.
Xbox
11/14 Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 2 - Includes 1941, Avengers, Black Tiger, Block Block, Captain Commando, Eco Fighters, Knights of the Round, King of Dragons, Last Duel, Mega Twins, Magic Sword, Quiz and Dragons, Side Arms, The Speed Rambler, Street Fighter I, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Strider, Three Wonders, Tiger Road, and Varth. There ya go!

11/14 Dance Dance Revolution Ultramix 4 - Someone must have forgotten to tell Konami about the 360, since here comes the next DDR game for the Xbox, complete with new 4-player action, 65 songs, and more downloadable from the original Xbox Live (that's still running?)

11/15 Xiaolin Showdown - See the PSP description.
11/15 Eragon - See the 360 description.
11/15 Bass Pro Trophy Fishing - As this page at Teamxbox.com so eloquently puts it, this is "a fishing game".
PS2
11/14 WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2007 - See the 360 description.
11/14 Happy Feet - See the DS description.
11/14 Brave: The Search for Spirit Dancer - From the people who brought us State of Emergency comes this a game set in Native American mythology (hmm, Native American mythology seems popular this year), with 3rd person platforming action.

11/14 Shrek Smash 'n' Crash - Having already done the Shrek action game, Shrek platformer, and Shrek party game, obviously there was no other choice than make a wacky Shrek Kart racing game.
11/14 Eragon - See the 360 description.
11/14 NFL Street 3 - See the PSP description
11/14 Naruto: Uzumaki Chronicles - A whole month has passed since the last Naruto game, so why not another? This one, surprise, appears to be another 3rd person action brawler.

11/14 Metal Slug Anthology - See the PSP description
11/14 Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 2 - See the Xbox description
11/14 Bionicle Heroes - See the 360 description.
11/15 Xiaolin Showdown - See the PSP description
11/15 Victorious Boxers 2: Fighting Spirit - Sequel to the Japanese-developed boxing that added some signature Japanese flair to the all-American sport of boxing. The new version adds a new mode where you can develop your own boxer and new branching storylines.

11/15 Horsez - Curtsey boxart? Check. Unnecessary usage of the letter z? Check.

PC
11/13 Medieval II: Total War - Follow-up to the amazingly popular Rome: Total War, this brings the series back to the medieval period while retaining the well-reviewed RTS action.

11/14 Eragon - See the 360 description.
11/14 Gothic III - Unpolished yet well-reviewed, the Gothic series has always treated fans to RPG excitement with an emphasis on action. Now in its third iteration, the new game promises more graphical flair and Oblivion-like gameplay.

GBA
11/14 Happy Feet - See the DS description.
11/14 Spider-Man: Battle for New York - See the DS description
11/14 Shrek Smash 'n' Crash - See the Xbox description
11/14 Eragon - See the 360 description.
11/14 Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis - Interesting: it's the original Sonic the Hedgehog, for the GBA.

11/14 Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation 2 - The original was released in August to mediocre reviews. The sequel, which is known as the popular Super Robot Wars series in Japan, promises to be more of the same.

11/14 Bionicle Heroes - See the 360 description.
Game of the Week:

Yoshi's Island 2, Nintendo DS, 11/14
Forget all the flashy graphics and screw all six cores of the PS3: Pretty much the only game I really want to play out of all of this crap this week is the sequel to one of the best SNES games ever, Yoshi's Island. Fans of the Mario franchise will obviously know the name: it was the 1995 Mario off-shoot that put Yoshi in the starring roll, throwing Baby Mario-escorting, dino-egg spitting, and platform jumping into the mix to create what some call the best 2D game ever. The second adventure promises to be similar to the original -- same basic gameplay, same egg-shooting mechanic. The only thing that worries me is the developer, in this case, Artoon, infamously known for a little Xbox game called "Blinx". That said, everything else is looking great.
Game I'm Playing:

I've been playing the 3-rings-of-red-light game! Yes, my 360 broke this week, and I am freakin' pissed. I was playing Splinter Cell, it froze, I restarted, and it never came back. While I wait for Xbox India to send me a replacement, all I can do is stare at my GoW disc and weep.

Hey at CompUSA you get a Ps3 preorder for any Sony TV you buy thats 40 inches or higher. What a deal!! Oh shit, Sony TV's are the overpriced ones. And the Ps3 ghetto is still $500.
-
Graphically, the PS3 isn't any better than XBox 360 and, honestly, I don't think it ever will be. They will be neck and neck and there will be games that look different on whatever system (for whatever reason). It definitely isn't the end all that people make it out to be. The only thing that gave me interest in the PS3 at all during the video was the Blu-Ray movie. I have absoluty no interest in any of the PS3 games (MGS4 is about it). I think I'll be perfectly fine with my 360 and Wii this year. When I get my HD-DVD drive in a few days not even the movie will interest me.... oh and Gears of War is freaking incredible.

I loved it. As for the PS3, that is one uber weak launch lineup. Its even worse when you wont be able to find a PS3, but youll be able to find most of those games on OTHER consoles. I wonder how many folks wont be able to get a PS3 so they will "settle" for a Wii or 360. Should be interesting. And the new Sonic makes me sad inside after playing the demo. Fun, but still trying to be Sonic AND Mario.
-
Most people have been assuming that the PS3 will slightly edge the 360 for performance, and are wondering if the extra performance is worth the extra cash. Most of the guys I know who've been working on the rendering engines of next gen games (and I know quite a few) say that their impression so far is that the 360 is the better-performing machine. The PS3's architecture doesn't lend itself to the most typical game requirements as well as the 360's does. Of course, it may still end up being the case that more and better games get released for the PS3. But I would still be very tempted to buy a 360 and a Wii rather than a PS3.
-
and we wont even go into the online stuff since everyone knows XBL is far superior.
-
Stories from Japan say average hardware to software figures show an average of less than one game for each playstation sold. The first 20 units at the launch attended by Kutagari were sold without any software, meaning that every person who bought one (probably the entire supply of the shop, given some stores are only going to have about 16 units) were fucking ebay touts. Every one of them refused to be interviewed by any media, or by Kutagari himself. Surely Sony could have done something about this? I feel sorry for the people who are genuinely excited about the launch lineup. I know a lot of people aren't, and Sony are still having a nightmare just now (the seriously short supply meant that XBox 360 is outselling PS3 in Japan... we're talking about JAPAN here!) but surely they could have figured out a way to reward the most devoted of their fans instead of a bunch of oppurtunist fuck holes who employ poor Chinese people for pennies so they'll stand for hours in the rain to get hold of one without even buying games.
-
Yeah, the original was great - but that was like 10 years ago and do you think any of the original designers worked on this game? Nintendo has been letting a lot of third party developers make games for them and they haven't always been the same quality we expect from Nintendo. I hope this game will be great, I'm just warning people to be informed first.
-
I was about to say te same thing. I don't think they've been too wise letting out so many IPs: I think one of the very few successful ones was F-Zero GX.
-
10 min later I turned it off and cried into my little pillow of shame.
-
Like say Gears of War. Motorstorm impressed me a tad, but that's about it. I got an Xbox360! It hasn't arrived yet. But I'm excited!
-
That was one of the most amazing launch titles ever when the PS2 launched. Just blew me away! How cool would have a new SSX for PS3 at launch been?
-
You know at the start of every consoles life. You haven't seen anything yet. At launch PS2 could have never had a game like, God of War. Also, how can you say that with MGS4 existing??? No Xbox game looks as good as that! Believe me the PS3 is more powerful and as the years go by and programmers tap its true potenial. We're gonna be blown away. Hopefully in 3 years it'll cost a lot less too.
-
There are 145 games released this week, this is only a small fraction. Not only that, but it looks like you forgot ALL of the Wii launch titles that will be released Tuesday.

Sonic The Stick With the Same Lame 3-D Formula Hedgehog
by godzillasushi
F-Zero GX was beyond excellent. Never has a game been so underated. Racing games hardly seem difficult, just time consuming. GX had the difficulty I always wanted. And just remember the 360 had PGR3, CoD, PDZ, and Kameo. A little something for everyone. PS3 looks to have a lot of sports games, CoD, and another Ridge Racer.
-
Have you seen Mass Effect? It definitely gives MGS 4 a run for its money. Dennis Dyack, developing for Silicone Knights says "The 360 and the PS3 are equal in power in my eyes," Dyack says. "Maybe the PS3 has more processing power. The 360 has more available memory. It's pretty much a net, net. The public perception of the PS3 was that it was much more powerful. To developers, they look even."
-
Sony hasn't really shown us anything. How many clips of ingame footage has Sony released? Not many at all, which isn't a good sign. The price for a PS3 is a huge issue for a lot of people--myself included. $600+ and that doesn't even include a $60 game. Can't Sony show us something to entice us other than vague commercials? Sony is arrogant if they think people are going to pony up this time. More importantly, Sony has become a victim of their own success. This next generation is for the taking if MS or Nintendo wants to stand up.
-
Youre right. Sony made sure the public 'knew' it was more powerful by pretty much lying. And remember the E3 where they showed all those clips of games but they were CG? Thats where I stopped caring.
-
I found myself laughing to myself at how incredibly badass the game is in the first half-hour of play. So far, I'm two chapters in on Hardcore mode - which is bloody hard, by the way - and loving every single second. Add to that the wonderful multiplayer, and it's magic on a disc. Oh yeah, and it has the best graphics ever, don't forget that.
-
as long as you have people that dont treat you like a peice of garbage its fun. Ive had a lot of games with cool teammates and a good time. Others are sniper whores and very rude.
-
The characters are over-the top, reminding me of the movie "PREDATOR"... and to some extent, the space-marines in "ALIENS". The characters seem to be a blending of character and body armor from both movies, in a somewhat exaggerated kind of way, ...if you get what I'm saying. And there's one level (in the game) which reminded me of "PITCH BLACK", which was yet another cool element. In other words, you really want to stay out of the dark! --From what I've seen and played of this game, I'm predicting that "GEARS OF WAR" will win various "Game of the Year" honors. --The aim-controls of "GEARS OF WAR" probably match the difficulty of being a marksman in real life. It's not easy to be precise, ...but it's not difficult to shoot in the ballpark of where you aim. --This game REALLY pushes into the next generation more than anything I've seen so far. It's a nice glimmer of things to come... and a peak into the possibilities of future interactive experiences. --When you make your character sprint forward (head lowered), it's almost like watching CNN from the P.O.V. of a "shaky-cam" following behind a running soldier. And the automatic changes of perspective may be the best I've ever seen. It felt very cinematic, to me. --When you just shoot, there's the 3rd-person perspective. But when you press the left trigger, you aim more carefully and there's kind of an extreme close-up of this 3rd-person perspective. And a sniper rifle can give you that 1st-person feel, when you zoom in on your target. --I'm not a huge fan of the horror genre... but at times, I appreciate it when it blends with other genres (as in "ALIENS" and "PREDATOR"). But to be completely honest, I wasn't (especially) looking forward to using the chainsaw-style bayonet. In fact, in terms of the appeal of the game, the chainsaw was probably more of a turn-off for me, personally. When I first witnessed the chainsaw-bayonet in action, I was probably expressing a look of being sickened. (Blood splatters on the camera, on your P.O.V.) Then I jumped into playing co-op with a friend. At one point, I had ran out of ammo and we (my friend and I) seemed out-gunned. The opposition out-numbered us. With no other options, I took a breath... and basically did an under-my-breath yell and ran up to the enemy, closed in on one and dropped the chainsaw on him. Both my game-character and I where yelling to one degree or another... as the chainsaw functioned as designed, sawing the screaming enemy in half! My experienced friend was still firing, laughing while witnessing me in action. In my hysteria, I managed to saw another one, still yelling, while my friend finished shooting the others. --Oh my god, what a rush... in that "I'm not sure how I feel about this" kind of way. --Later, my friend (whom has already completed the game in single player) mentioned how much easier the game was playing in co-op mode... and at one point, suggested that we up the difficulty. --Originally, I was intimidated by "GEARS OF WAR" because I'm more of a casual gamer. But I learned the controls fast enough and together, in co-op, we were succeeding in the game with little trouble. Sure, on occasion, one of us would get seriously wounded (or die) ...but most times, we could (eventually) save/revive the other. --I'm not sure what else to say... but wow, what a stunner. What a show-piece. I'll skip the PS3 and I'll have the Xbox360 at the lower price (both hardware and software) and a larger hard-drive, figuring that the 360 games will be more open to user-created content (something I like to do and share over XBOX LIVE). And besides, ..."GEARS OF WAR" has a multi-player mode for LIVE that allows a more intimate/friendly game of up to 8 people, ...not to mention the co-op mode on LIVE, as well. --Here's to hoping that you get to experience the NEXT GENERATION of games as I have, with "GEARS OF WAR" on Xbox360. But then, ...you may find yourself in a situation where you'll have to use that chainsaw-style bayonet.... Not that there's anything wrong with that. (heh, heh)

Anybody got any comments on that, and how it will play into the whole Sony VS Microsoft battle?
I picked one up, and the HD King Kong disc looks great. (I wouldn't have bought that disc, but whatever). My surround sound receiver only has one Optical input, currently filled by my Dish HD receiver, but two digital Coax inputs, so I had to order a converter to get 5.1 out of the 360, but by the end of the week, I should have some HD-DVD, 5.1 sound goodness. Plus, I've got an unopened copy of Gears of War to get to. BTW, anyone see that legendary edition of Halo3 available for preorder with the Masterchief helmet? -
...Killzone 2??????
-
This looks like hell. I'm scared. http://tinyurl.com/yeqngx

Yeah, if you mean by continually delivering by the numbers sequels that, after seven editions can't fix the most basic problems, or even offer gameplay elements that was in WWF No Mercy (Mid turnbuckle moves, AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, INTERRUPTIBLE FUCKING MOVES!!!), which was released back in 2000.A cumbersome CAW mode, that pails in comparison to the now defunct Day of Reckoning series (GC)And halfassed inclusions of WWE Legends. Several of them don't have their entrance music this year (Bam Bam, Anvil-though you can easily fix his), The models are off. It looks like they included a rookie Dusty Rhodes, not the overweight one we've loved for years! I mean c'mon, at least the model should have been the jeans and T-shirt, if he wasn't comfortable having his yellow polka dot ensemble selectable. As a matter of fact a lot of the pudgy grapplers are noticeably skinny. Anvil, Umaga, and Flair, just to name a few. Hell, the Big Show's appearance has been off for years. Every year I hope they stick Yokozuna in their as a legend, but now that I think about it, they'd most likely fuck him up.And the movesets ARE HORRIBLE!!! Shouldn't it be required to go back and study some films for those guys before listing their moves??? For the past two years Bret Hart has been given a X-pac-like spinning back kick. WHAT THE MOTHER FUCK??? He NEVER DID THAT!!! EVER!!!!!!! Those fucking have developers, I swear. Now sure, you can go back and change the moves, but they are mostly generic animation, courtesy of mo-cap.I fucking hate mo-cap. Sure it saves them a lot of time from animating the moves, but, if they did animate them, they'd be able to give the legends their unique moves, maneuvers and holds, not to mention the ability to interrupt any of those and any time.Smackdown has always been a bit lackluster, but I still buy them every year, because I'm a wrestling fan. And even if I wasn't, I'd still buy them, just for the create mode. Yes, even with it's problems. Because it blows every other character creation mode away this side of City of Heroes. There's nothing like taking your creation online and having people ooh and ah over your shit. (Online play, does have a shitload of problems. Problems that will most likely resurface, even on Xbox LIve.)I'm picking up my copy this week for PS2, which suprisingly out side of the lower res, and the absence of sweat, and Xbox live features, might be considered the better version. Why? Six players online as opposed to four on 360, and (rumored) 32 layers on CAW's compared to 360's 28 for online play.I'll give you guys the heads up if any of the reaccuring problems resurface in this years edition, and whatever else that is noteworthy, in next weeks column.
-
I meant HACK developers. Don't know why I typed "have". lolWHERES MY EDIT FEATURE??? lol.
-
I want to hear about wii games.
-
Not that this is the place to come for the best game info, but at least he's filling in big gaps that Monki doesn't have the time or money to fill. That said, wrestling aint my thing. But... yeah: keep on trucking.
-
I wouldn't be surprised if the PS2 version of the wrestling is superior in terms of features. It's like third party developers across the board are holding back content from 360 sports games on purpose and still charging the extra ten bucks. There have been several culprits so far, including EA and Konami, making the PS2 versions of their sports games the superior versions. That's one reason why I don't have a next gen console yet. I hope I'm wrong, but it seems like they're all holding back for the PS3 before they really dive in. If Sony aren't paying for exclusivity, then I can't really explain it.
-
Hell, the launch amount alone for PS3 looks like it's far ahead of Xbox 360's current total to date for all I know, and that's about 80,000 Blu-Ray players on the market in Japan alone!
As for PS3 being hard to program for, sure Microsoft has the better tools, but PS3 is also reportedly much easier to develop for that PS2 initially was... basically it will all come down to whoever sells more systems in the end. Developers will make themselves used to the PS3 if the market for it is good, they're going to go where the money is...
Reviews for Resistence: Fall of Man have been very good, and the online for free battles with no lag are all the rage, even the single player game shows off the PS3's power with multiple amounts of craziness happening onscreen with no slowdown in framerate! An excellent title for launch by teh sounds of it!
Also, as for news on Killzone for PS3, word is we'll get a look at it in 2007, most likely E3, and word coming in is that it's meeting and exceeding the trailer you saw at E3'05... can't wait to confirm that with my own eyes! o_O -
as well?

"Sony hasn't really shown us anything. How many clips of ingame footage has Sony released? Not many at all, which isn't a good sign." Try opening your eyes, dude. Go to a game site with a PS3 channel. I go to IGN mainly for the Wii stuff, but there's a ton of ingame PS3 stuff on the PS3 channel. A ton. Well whaddya know? And nice one Sushi. We all know about that E3 debacle - from 2 E3s/years ago. Compare that stuff to the latest builds of the games. Whatever, turkey. I couldn't care less who 'wins' this round but God there are a lot of angry biased schoolboys in here. Having said all that those opportunistic Japanese businessmen (the scalpers employing the poor Chinese nationals and students not Sony - ha!) really suck. Although if you pay 1500 bucks for a PS3 you've got no-one to blame but yourself.
-
C'mon, I know you're "writing" it as we speak. Maybe Howie Long could play Marcus Fenix?
-
Gears of War is exclusive to Xbox 360 and built specifically to take advantage of Xbox 360's archietecture. It won't be out for PS3 and might also be a pain in the ass to port it if they wanted... It's doubtful whether it'll release for PC either, but perhaps very further down the road for Vista only...
-
How many games has Microsoft released on the PS2 again?
-
I just thought both a PC and PS3 port would be possible as it's based on the latest unreal engine and I can't imagine either epic or the GOW developers wouldn't want to wring as much money as possible out of it - it's not like they're Microsoft. Also, the exclusive thing is an awfully abused word these days. More often it's turning into "We'll give you guys a head start 'cause you payed us more dough". That's cool though - I'd like to have both consoles (when I can afford it), and the HD movie capability, but trying to be fair (while ignoring the useless core/'tard system), the 360 seems just as expensive as the PS3 when you compare apples to apples - although I think the 360 has less hard drive space. Can't remember.
-
Oops. Shoulda checked before I posted. It IS Microsoft and Epic.

I've had an xbox 360 since launch and couldn't be happier with it. I'm getting my wii this weekend and i'll probably get a playstation early next year. One system will sell more than the others but I don't think any of them are gonna bite it. all three will be around for a few years and I don't want to miss out.

IF (a) The developers themselves hadn't stated that it would take about eight years to develop the type of game we saw in the "demo" and (b) If it completely betrays the original and actually turns out to be good, and (c) If publishers actually base their bragging on something related to the game instead of using it to simply generate hype. I admit it was good for about an hour, and it was the first dual analogue fps I'd played, but I can't believe I actually played right through the game. Johnno's right about the PS3 in Japan: it hasn't sold more than xbox 360, but it will as soon as more stock arrives, whenever that will be. I recon the European release date will be put back till July or something.
-
"It's a FPS set in a dystopian future world with the requisite guns and vehicles".
Except it's set in 1950s England. (One level even features Grimsby. Grimsby!) -
How in the world can you realistically compare an XBox game on DVD and a PS3 game on BluRay? You must be playing on a poo poo CRT, buddy. S'ok. When you move out of mommy and daddy's house, you can one day affor 1040p. We're talkin' GIGS here, people. GIGS!

Man, I wish I knew all along that PS3 would put hairs on my chest. Grrr... give me an shave and a bloody steak, I'm off to buy a PS3. And what's storage format got to do with the price of fish?
-
Look at Sony's history: Betamax Failed. Mini Disc Failed. UMD is Failing. Blu Ray has yet to be seen. But they're hoping that 4th time is a charm I guess. And also, for those that automatically assume that because the PS3 is the best hardware that it will win even if it is WAY too expensive, think back 14 years, and remember the 3DO... it was way better than the SNES and genesis in terms of graphics and hardware, but it sure didn't do very well, mostly because it cost 3 times as much. Betamax was a better technology than VHS, but its lost because Sony is run by idiots who think they still have control on the culture. Nintendo knows what it means to play a game and they make great games with that in mind. And microsoft has learned the hard way that people don't want everything bundled together, so they didn't with the 360. We won't even see a decent Sony game until the winter of 2007. Why wait for then? I'd rather play Gears of War on my 360 now, thanks very much.
-
...if the game studios can't figure out how to write games for the PS3 hardware, which is known to be developer unfriendly compared to the 360. Robust technical specs don't mean a damn thing if decent games can't be made on a console.
-
Yeah everyone points to those, but the COMPACT DISC and the DVD were global successes. Both formats were developed using Sony technology.
-
Seems off to some extent, if you're talking about movies... it's fair to compare it to Betamax, but UMD was a format that only played on one system, the PSP. Blu-Ray will have players put out by other companies... And even if movies fail, the uses for games still can't be ignored. UMD is cool for PSP games, just think of it like the cartridges that Nintendo uses for their handhelds. So too, Blu-Ray is beneficial for games on PS3. People complain about giving developers a hard time, but where Microsoft provides a smooth archietecture and tools to create games on 360, Sony provides massive disc space so developers don't have to worry about having to write extensive code for compression etc. on the PS3's initial outings. Resistence: Fall of Man takes up more space than a DVD. FFXIII games will definately require Blu-Ray! Arguments about the uses of FMV and compression technology are irrelevant, sure for the most part stuff can be made to fit on DVD etc. etc. but I really don't care... When I pop in a game I only care about the end result and couldn't care so much what goes on behind the scenes... If Hideo Kojima or Company A can't compress games as well as CLiffy B and company B, it doesn't matter to me, give him what he needs and put it on the system that lets him do what he wants with ease... PS3's archietecture just presents a learning curve, much like PS2 did, eventually once they figure it out over the course of a year or two, PS3 games will be developed smoothly. Sony has been providing much more support, a fact that many leave out, with PS3 than they ever did with PS2. It's still hard but it's not some insurmountable task... A next gen disc format is needed to take advantage of HDTVs. Sony future proofed their console for a 10 year life cycle, much like they continued to support PSOne and are continuing to support PS2. Developers not ready to hop on board for next gen budgets can still get their kicks developing for PS2 and the Wii. I'm certain many PS3 owners will continue to pick up good PS2 games...
-
The format rarely determines the quality of the game. If games "need" Blu ray instead of DVD how can some of the most hyped-up games like Assassin's Creed and Oblivion and Grand Theft Auto (of all huge games) exist equally across platforms? It's not so much about the quality (the technically best format isn't always the most successful), it's about the expense to the consumer and, to some extent, the motives of the company. I'd personally be surprised if actual gameplay takes up a whole Blu ray disc in any games of the next generartion. Even the PS3 wont be able to process that amount of data in a short time. Phil Harrison says they already are doing it, but he has to justify its presence. Blu ray isn't the reason to buy a PS3 unless you're buying it to watch the movies. So focus on the games, not the formats.

I'll admit, $600 is a good deal for a Blue-ray player
by ricky henderson
But you're gambling on a format that may not become the standard and a gaming machine that developers may not be able to design games for. I'm waiting for the price cuts to come before picking up a PS3. And I'm assuming price cuts will come shortly once it occurrs to Sony that $600 is far too much for a gaming console.

How about the news that PS3 isn't backwards compatible with a large number (200) of PS2 titles? Oops.
-
It's probably to attract the "non-gamers" they keep going on about. Like "a movie player that has cool games too". But you can get dvd players for pennies now anyway. As for the PS3 backwards compatability issue, there'll probably be patches for the games that don't work. It's just a matter of time, but at the moment, they're a bit like "Some people play games without sound anyway". They've got bigger fish to fry anyway.
-
Seeems to be a downloadable upgrade... for a price... and seems to only be offered in Japan for the moment. For one: Nintendo has noted that DVD penetration is practically reaching 100% so pretty much all homes will have a standalone DVD player, so they don't need another one on the Wii. Two: Nintendo doesn't want to pay licensing fees for DVD, by not making it standard and offering it as an optional purchase upgrade they cover their costs. Though if you ask me if is convenient to have an all in one box because we don't want to resort to splitters and taking up all the inputs on our televisions.

It is true that quite a lot of games aren't working well on the PS3, this is the first launch console issue I've heard and nothing yet on PS3s crashing, freezing or anything like a certain AICN Games Contributor's Xbox 360 up there, but it's also quite early to determine launch bugs yet... Similarily, the PS2 also had trouble playing some PSOne games. Currently Sony has built the PS2 Emotion engine chipset used in the slimline PS2s into the PS3, so when you buy a PS3 at launch know that you're essentially getting a PS3 and PS2 in one! I'd expect downloadable patches etc to be released to fix these launch console bugs. Sony is currently working on software emulation for their whole library of games which they expect to be done and running perfectly around next year. Then they will utilize this in the PS3 and remove the PS2 chip, thus making it possible to reduce the size(which will be a looong time before we see a slim line PS3 despite that they've already managed to reduce the size of the Cell), but on the plus side this will also make a retail price reduction very possible as you won't be buying two systems in one!
