FANBOYS trailer has hit online!

Published at:  Nov 11, 2006 5:27:56 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... It's kinda surreal to see a trailer for Ernest Q Cline's FANBOYS. I've only been following this tiny project for nearly a decade now. Back when EPISODE 1 was merely a phantom menace on the horizon. I'm not the biggest fan of the trailer, as it's playing up the gags and isn't really doing a job of selling what I feel the real story of the film is, which is the heart of this friendship. BUT - that's for the movie to tell ya. The trailer is meant to show you the zany fun that's in store for folks. Here ya go, the good folks at IESB.net got it...

    by headgeek

Yes, The Weinstein Company plans to release this wide. As for Moonwatcher's 5-25-77, I'm dying to see that film. But right now, I don't believe it has a distributor and not much is known about the finished film.

    by nairb the movie

Well from the stuff I've seen 5-25-77 is a more passionate piece of work. Its more about the emotional magic that all film holds over us geeks, while these seems like a schlocky, sex romp with geek jokes. Perhaps thats why 5-25-77 doesn't have a distributor... It won't sell because its too true. But I'm just a little blogger and the director Patrick Read Johnson took the time and effort not only to write a comment on my blog (how he came upon it I don't know) but to even write me a lengthy email to thank me for my glowing appreciation of the trailer on my blog... 5-25-77 will pwns this anyday...

In 98, I was so fucking excited about that fucking abortion of a film, I almost shit myself in the teaser they showed in front of "Enemy of the State". Seriously, that double-sided lightsaber was just about the coolest thing I had ever seen. I cannot believe how fucking psyched I was for that fucking movie. I ate up everything, avoided ever fucking spoiler, got pissed when I saw anything, avoided this site like the plague and then on opening day, I saw it and I was like, "WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?!?!?!?" I honestly felt like I had been raped. Seriously. I thought for sure I had freaked out and dreamt the whole thing, so I sat through it again. Nope, still sucked. In retrospect, no film could've possibly lived up to that kind of hype and expectation. It could have at least tried though. So, with that in mind, I can understand the idea behind this movie. However, I feel really sorry for the cancer kid, because....fuck....what a horrible note to go out on.

I don't mind this film and the way it's probably going to come out.. As long as it ends with them seeing the moive and scream in shear dispointment as the rest of us who had tought Star Wars I was going to be great and saw a fu**ing Jar talk thru the whole movie and not get a laser thru the head at the very begining of the film. If they can protray the disapointment, then let me know and I'll go out and support this movie. If it ends with them loving SW I... then this film should be classified as "Sci-Fi".

Well, I still remember when the Austin American Statesman did an article on this in like '98/99 about he guy who I guess came up with the idea. He was going to shoot on video or something and Harry was supposed to be in it. Then I heard Newman was making it. He went to NYU with my buddy who is now a DP. And now...here it is. Pretty much what I expected. Can't say I'm totally pumped. Even if Kristen Bell is in it. The 5-25-77 thing is never gonna come out I think. I think he was running low on funds. I heard something through someone who worked on it. That was like a year ago or maybe even more.

And I still don't get this 'raped my childhood' crap even after nearly 8 years. I was going to see a sci-fi/fantasy film, not the second coming of Christ which is what a lot people here seemed to have got into their heads it was going to be (which is what this trailer seems to have nailed spot on). As a Star Wars film TPM is certainly the weakest but I'll forgive it faults purely for that 20 seconds where Obi-wan comes from behind that shield with the express intention of fucking up Maul's day. As a film in itself its not that bad and for a much bigger personal feeling of being clusterfucked by a film/s I give you the Matrix sequels. The 2nd one was I felt OK as long as the 3rd made sense and kicked ass which it most certainly did not. In fact, many of my friends and customers (yes I work in a video store so keep the Clerks comments to a minimum please) do not refer to the Matrix Trilogy, just The Matrix because that film kicked unholy ass (And WAS a better film than TPM, AOTC and just edges ROTS just so you know that I'm not a Lucas apologist). I guess it's just personal taste when it comes down to it. I've seen the Star Wars prequels and enjoyed them for what they were made to be, a bit of escapist fun. I hated the Matrix sequels because they were made as action films with designs to say about the human condition which, when you boil down to it, turned out to be 1 hours worth of plot squeezed into 4 with a better than average car chase and a fight between 2 super-humans which was done with with more style, believability and no CGI 30 years ago with Superman II.

That trailer and the entire idea of the film bore me to death.

that not only was it Seth Rogen in make-up, but it was Seth Rogen playing (and quite well, I might add) Gabriel Köerner, the ultimate Star Trek geek. Remember that fuck-tard from Trekkies? I must comment on the prequals. Being an elementary teacher for the last 6 to 7 years or so I cannot believe the popularity that Star Wars has with kids. Believe it or not....ITS NOT the original trilogy that they love its episodes 1, 2 and 3. The majority of costumes this year were star wars based as a matter of fact. I know that the prequals were a disappointment for you all but seriously. Name any other movie that has fighting with laser swords, robots with blasters, many exotic aliens, epic space battles, Yoda kicking ass, the birth of Darth Vader!! To the kids I teach ITS FREAKING SWEET!

Looks like CBS/Paramount didn't want to play along with a comic depiction of Trekkies, again. Same problem in Free Enterprise. You can get Shatner but you can't get the IP. Or maybe with the whole Viacom split you didn't even know who to ask about rights. Do you ask CBS for rights to the TV properties to put in a movie, or do you ask Paramount for movie rights because it's a movie?

...also loved the original trilogy. It's perfectly OK to love each in their own ways.

I've seen two of the original trilogy on their first run(s), all special editions, and midnight shows of each of the 'new' films... had an absolute blast at each one. Cheered for Maul, cheered for Yoda fight, and witnessed grown men cry at the immolation scene... bought the John Williams soundtracks and Duel of the Fates (not to mention Battle of the Heroes) makes me smile... .seriously. Let it end once and for all...for the utter vast majority of human beings the prequels were extraordinarily entertaining.

Hell, when you think you're gonna get another chance to buy Sam Jackson on a Froot Loops box? Yeah, thought so...
