"Babylon 5" to move with "Crusade" '''

Published at:  Feb 15, 1999 3:28:14 PM CST

Glen here...

...with a quick follow-up to HREF="http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/display.cgi?id=3058"> yesterday's article about
the fate of the Babylon 5 spinoff, Crusade.

In yesterday's article, I indicated that Crusade would likely be "picked up" (i.e. changing
networks and able to resume production after a long state-of-suspension at TNT) sometime this
week - with production on the series beginning again sometime next week..

Now come indications that Babylon 5 will actually be changing networks along with
Crusade.

    Interesting news, assuming it's true

    by jacob corbin

I'll be interested to see what happens to the ratings if this still-unnamed network does a halfway-decent job promoting B5 and "Crusade". Would a heavily-covered show do better on a channel with limited coverage than it would if it were languishing in a silly timeslot on a widespread network? Stay tuned...

    How?

    by ranger one

Admittedly, I do not know much about the deal that TNT has to run B5, but it seems odd that the show could just pick up and move to another network. I assume that TNT had to purchase the rights to run B5, just as the Sci-Fi Channel had to purchase the rights to run Star Trek. Unless TNT is willing to give that up, I don't see B5 moving to another network anytime soon. And before anyone says that it's different because TNT is owned by TimeWarner, it isn't. If I remember correctly, TNT/Turner Broadcasting paid a great deal of money to obtain the syndication rights to ER, which is also a WB production.

    Changing networks

    by mike benedetto

It shouldn't be impossible, or even difficult, for Babylon 5 to change networks. Yes, TNT had to pay for the show -- but Sci-Fi was also eager to own it, and bid for it several years ago. If that channel is the target, it's probably still willing to buy the show... but from TNT. Money will just have to change hands in a different direction.

    B5/Crusade

    by nicky lewer

    So it begins....but lets hope
this all doesn't end 'in fire'.
    I really hope Crusade survives,
because ever since B5 ended here
on New Zealand screens the only
half decent sci-fi is reruns of
    Ye Olde 70's show Battlestar
Galactica. I don't even want to
    know when 'Voyager' comes back
    here..

Nobody knows. Where the hell are they going now!?! What about the Sci-Fi channel? It'd be perfect!

    Changing networks -- NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

    by mdmuzzie

I really look forward every day to watching B5. I missed most of the episodes during their original run, and am now glad that I have discovered this wonderful series.

---The taking back of Earth---I don't remember many more powerful hours of television than that one.

I was really disappointed when Sliders was exiled to the Sci-Fi Channel. I really hope B5 and Crusade don't suffer the same fate.

I have tried numerous times to convince our local cable operator to add the Sci-Fi Channel -- to no avail. (Hey, they gave us Bravo -- yippee, @#$%*)

I really hope that one of the more common cable channels picks up B5 and Crusade, instead of a "hard to get" channel like the Sci-Fi Channel or FX.

    Are you listening, UPN?

    dish time

    by xxiii

Tell your cable co to shove it and get a dish, little or big. Be sure to let your cable co know why your quitting.

So, is this going to be part of the sci fi channel's 2.0-3/19/99 "upgrade"?

We are in the process of becoming a Neilsen family and I look forward to throwing ratings points toward whereever it ends up (unless its CBS or FOX, who I am planning on boycotting due to their trampling on my (and other viewer's) rights). i'd be very surprised if one of the "big" networks got it though. (if one of them gets it, I may have to make an exception for B5 stuff.)

    What About the TNT Movies?????

    by spawn

I would think that the network may not be to happy to have a made for TNT movie being aired any where else. But if the heir to the franchise can afford to buy exclusivity from TNT for both B5 and Crusade, then I would hope that they could afford to liberate the movies as well. My fingers are crossed. My vote goes to FX or even FOX for that matter. They need a franchise other than X-Files and another Melrose McBeal 90210....

FRANKLY I'M SURPISED BY ALL THIS

    by bowieblu

This is a very unusual move for a network to abandon a series which it fostered. But since it obviously has, the fact that the reruns of B5 are moving to wherever Crusade are going to doesn't shock me. I LOVE MONSTERVISION THOUGH. Joe Bob Briggs (John Bloom) is a sage. I just wish TNT would look beyond WCW and ER for once. B5 gave it great ratings in the end.

    Nils

PS - TNT is responsible for me getting all the B5 episodes on tape thank God, though my cable is always screwing up when the Deconstruction of Falling Stars is on for some reason, go figure

    Hopefully SCI-FI

    by alanr1778

Sci-Fi would have the best odds...since Sci-Fi in Europe had/has the rights to B5 there.

Plus they are making a bigger deal out of their original series (Sliders is going to move to Friday night this year so Friday will be an all originals night).

    I hope it isn't FX....that I don't get!

    I'm laughing my hiney off

    by xrae

iank said, "I'm sick of TNT moving B5 around, putting it on when it's a pain and generally failing manage to run it on time." --- People who have watched B5 only from the time it moved to TNT have NO IDEA what longtime B5 fans have had to suffer. Here, the first season it aired during prime time. Then the second season it was at 12:30 a.m. Then by the time the third season began, it was 2 a.m. But we had it good! Another friend would get up at 4 a.m. every Sunday morning to watch the show because she was afraid her VCR would fail. So TNT's treatment of the show has been par for the course, as far as I'm concerned, and I've appreciated the fact that I didn't have to have a B5 hangover at work the following day. I'm just hoping that whoever picks up Crusade will give the show a solid timeslot and good promotion and *reasonable* amounts of reruns thrown in with the new episodes. I hope that's not too much to ask.

    Bets on Sci Fi channel

    by pol

So a channel's gonna rescue Crusade and B5. My Bets are now on the Sci Fi Channel. They're one of the few channels that can show an brabd new show(Crusade) and a show that has five seasons already done at the same time. WB and doesn't do that and FX doesn't either(To my knowledge, we don't get it around here).

    Interesting...

    by jbardin

It will be worth watching the goings on of where and when Crusade appears. Mark my words, some heavy corporate maneuvering is going on here to get Babylon 5 and Crusade to air on one station, and it may even get kinda ugly. Ted Turner isn't what you'd call the most laid back guy in the world when big money is involved. Oh, and I echo the comments about going with digital satellite over cable. Much nicer, much more user-friendly...

    The story behinf CRUSADE

    by death2gods

It seems to me that the story behind CRUSADE finding a network is probably much more interesting than the show will ever be... I have a bad vibe.

    Give me something to enjoy!

    by captmilo

After being an avid fan of the Original series, and watching (and for the most part enjoying) The Next Generation, I was skeptical of DS9, but came generally like it. The story lines were not oo bad, and the characters agreeable. Voyager on the other hand has not pulled me in. I cannot seem to like the characters, and I find the stories boring. Quite honestly I never thought I would find myself saying this about a SciFi show. After growing up in what seemed to be a life that was devoid of any SciFi television, I easily gravitated toward UFO, Space:1999, V, Battlestar Gallactica. But those were good at best. Nowhere near the great SciFi that I wanted to see. Nowhere near the Great SciFi I was reading by Heinlein, Asimov, Bova, and many others. Finally, we started seeing some impressive SciFi with impressive characters. Alien Nation, while still only good, had some impressive sociological stories, reminiscent of the original Star Trek. TNG proved in its third season that there are some really impressive writers in Hollywood that can write SciFi, even if most of the Trek story lines relied on 'deux ex machina'. Still other Scifi shows cropped up and died ignoble deaths, but impressive ones, such as The X-Files and Babylon 5 developed into great SciFi. Suddenly, with SciFi in the limelight, I find myself not liking my old faithful's, Star Trek's, spinoffs. The entire ST universe has become a locked down arena where 'deux ex machina' is the norm, and no one can write anything new, unique, and certainly nothing that raises the bar on SciFi television. The introduction of Jeri Ryan's character added insult to my injury!. Now we are seeing Baywatch in outer space. Well, maybe it's not that bad, but it is the only reason my Uncle started watching Voyager! Since her introduction, I have seen three episodes and have been very disappointed. The quality of the writing is just not there. Even with the sometimes lack of acting by a few of the characters on Babylon 5, the stories have always been well above par. With Voyager they just don't seem to know how to write a good effective character or story. When they do give the characters a good part the story lacks, and the decent story lines seem to complety forget about the characters. So I see advertisement for the 'Two Hour Voyager Movie' and decide to tape it. (Had to watch Drew Carey and Whose Line Is It) Upon staying up late watching the episodes, I realized my faithfulness to Trek had reached an all-time low. The writers are still staying in their safety nets, but what is even worse, they are regurgitating stories that take the show nowhere. If the producers would stand back and say to themselves, "What are we doing here?" they would only be able to answer, "Making money for ourselves". Entertaining? Only do the lowest common denominator. I stopped watching because the stories took me nowhere. I jump back on to find I am still at the same place. It is almost as bad as watching a soap opera. You can jump back into watching it after taking a two month hiatus and know exactly what is going on. The characters never develop past the point of introduction. What happened to plot points affecting characters later on in the series. Even most television shows nowadays allow characters to mature. For the Star Trek franchise to continue, the producers need to set higher goals for the series, and allow a little more freedom. Continuity is nice, but raising the bar on SciFi television, and good solid stories with consequences is even more important. Until we start demanding this from the series that we watch, we will get drivel. Well I think I have spoke enough of my mind. Back to finding something worthwhile to watch on the wasteland...
