"Crusade": The Possibility of Hope
Glen here...
...with a fast tid-bit regarding the Babylon 5 spinoff Crusade.
Earlier today, I received some indication that Crusade may well resume shooting a
week from tomorrow (which would have the now-suspended production moving into action again on
February 22).
I have just been informed that...at the Gallifrey One convention in Los Angeles...
series Creator and Executive Producer J. Michael Straczynski indicated he expected the show to be
"picked up" (i.e. a deal made to move the show from TNT to another network) sometime within the
next week.
Put two and two together...
MORE TO COME AS STORY DEVELOPS.

Hi Gang, Let's all hope this materializes. For some reason, I feel almost certain that CRUSADE will materialize & survive.

Although I wish to eventually see Crusade, I hope that the shut down has given JMS time to rethink his story, and ESPECIALLY to rethink how he will introduce the new set and costumes... For me the best case scenario is that the first 5 episodes already "in the can" be considered Year1, that another 8 episodes be (which would take place another 6-12 months later) filmed which would round out year two (and which would add up to a short 13 episode season), and that then JMS could concentrate on rounding out the last 3 seasons normally (as normallyas B5 has ever gone anyway). JMS works best when under time constraints (as season 4 showed us) and this way we wouldn't be subjected to too many one-offs which were EASILY the weakest part of B5, it would by necessity intensify the arc and I believe would make for a MUCH better series. Also, it would run the episode tally to 79... 79 the same number of episodes as another well known Tv show....
-
Aside from the fact that this is impossible anyway (assuming that "Crusade" is picked up, it will be for a full 22-episode season) and bizarre (why in God's name would we *want* a 79-episode series?), you seem to be forgetting that there are quite a few more than the "original 5" episodes filmed. From what I've read, production (and filming, IIRC) has already started on "Appearances and Other Deceits", so the structure of the season is now set in stone. I know the uniform/set change may offend some people's delicate tastes, but *that's the way it is*--whether "Crusade" is picked up for a full season or not.

"Faith manages," I've been reminding myself since the whole TNT-dropping-the-ball thing broke. "Faith manages" I chanted as the weird anti-B5 zealots chanted for Crusade to be dead in the water. "Faith manages" I mumble as I log on to Ain't It Cool every day, hoping for a sign that my prayers have been answered. And today, my friends, in light of Glenn's Glorious little Tidbit, I say it again: Faith Manages.

Dolfinar -- or however the name is spelled -- one thing needs to be made clear to you: Crusade is not as much as an arc based story and series as B5 was. There is much more room for stand alone installments, which is why you will be seeing many other writers besides JMS writing episodes. Yes, there's an arc, but not an intense one. The shape of this arc is obvious: The quest for the cure. Outside of that main arc, I'm sure there will be character arcs so that by the end the characters will be different from the kinds of persons they started as. They will evolve and change as their quest continues. But, Crusade is not an intense outlined arc story like B5. Already there are many freelance scripts written and being written. And there will be many stand alone stories.
And, your idea about how JMS wants to deal with the set and costume changes cannot be done. "Appearances..." was filmed before the break. And at this point it's the only way to deal with the changes. When it airs, it will make sense, and be okay. And each season will be 22 eps.

Like B5, the arc will grow over time. Usually other writers did the standalones in seasons 1 and 2 while jms wrote the arc. I get the feeling this'll go the same way, and when jms turns it on its head again and intensifies(sp?) the arc he'll start writing a lot more of the episodes...perhaps

Fecking talkback program, didn't want that one done twice. Oh well...

Either way, with fewer episodes, JMS WILL have to be picky about which scripts he uses (a good thing), and with fewer episodes he will also be forced to intensify the arc (such as it is), also a good thing... So to conclude... Less episodes=good thing. However before people bash me for not being "a true fan" I would like to say that even if JMS original costume plan goes through and we DO get 110episodes I WILL WATCH, and I have NO DOUBT that I WILL enjoy a SIGNIFICANT number of shows... PS If your post gets multiplied and you want the excess deleted (especially during busy talkbacks) E-mail Glenn.

This is CRUSADE we're talking about, SHEEEETT!!! HAVE some FAITH....ugh...Glenn...how long before we know where its moving too?

I have a point to make. Who says the arc of Crusade is about the quest for the cure? All that is is the starting premise. Who saw the arc after they viewed The Gathering? I saw nothing about the Shadow War or the Interstellar Alliance. As to those who say the premise is similiar to other shows, just remeber that the original premise to Babylon 5 is almost exactly like Deep Space Nine. As to the storyline ending being obvious: Excaliber finding a cure in time, Who says they succeed? The only mention to the incident is the allusion to the Drahk War in Rising Stars and Earth is not shown in Sleeping in the Light. The Excaliber crew might of failed for all we know.
Yes, the Earth is shown a hundred years later in Descent of Falling Stars, but a cure could of been found by then and the Earth repopulated. In other words, don't critize something until you see it. -
Paladin - we *did* see Earth in 'Sleeping in Light'. We saw Ivanova's offices at Earthdome so we know the plague was cured since repopulating Earth would have taken a lot more than 15 years or so.
-
Djlong, actually we saw an Earthforce/Earthdome headquaters. You are just assuming that it was on Earth. Earthdome is composed of other colonies( I think only Mars broke away), not to metion a sizable military fleet. Where would the government be if it was on a quarinteened planet? they would move it to another planet for the sake of order. So following this logic, my thought is still valid. We were shown a headquarters, not Earth itself. I admit this maybe an assumption, but then again so is yours.
-
is in one place - Geneva, Switzerland. Next question.
-
I think there was a shot of it before the scene with Ivanova's office. I know Franklin said something about being due back on earth, before the ranger showed up in Garabaldi house. So, that means the cure was found.
-
You know when I saw the plot for this new series, I couldn't contain myself. I just can't wait to see Wildstar fire the Wave Motion Gun one more time. I hope JMS takes the time to fully develop Desslok's character.
-
Actually, I think we *do* know that the Earth is saved from the plague.
To begin with, I've seen it said (by JMS, I think) that Franklin was on Earth when the Drakh hit it.
Fifteen years (or so) later we see Franklin looking quite alive.
That doesn't mean that the show is intrinsically flawed. When was that last time you watched a movie and actually thought for a *second* that Main Character X was going to die? That the bad guy was actually going to succeed in blowing up the world?
The only ones I can think of were Doctor Strangelove (in which the bad guy *did* succeed in blowing up the world) and Event Horizon (the first time I ever apologized to a date about the movie)in which I was actually COMPLETELY wrong in who was and wasn't going to survive.
