Universal pays niiiiiccceeeee monies for Cohen's BRUNO!!!

Published at:  Oct 30, 2006 1:24:20 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I have missed 2 chances now to see BORAT and I think I'm going a little bit crazy in my brain. I want to see it so bad. And apparently Universal thinks there are a whole helluva lotta people out there like me because they just paid $42.5 million for Sacha Baron Cohen's next flick, BRUNO. It seems he has a monopoly on 5 letter character name titles that start with B.

BRUNO is focused on another of Cohen's characters, a gay fashionista in Austria. Congratulations to the Cohen team for getting such a sweet deal... now I just gotta figure out how to see BORAT before my laughter-less heart dies.

    $42.5 Mill?

    by grando

Christ. No pressure then? Bruno was funny from what we saw of him, but $42.5 mill(£22.4 mill in real money) funny?

anything related to Cohen is gold, buuuuut

    by badmrwonka

won't they run into the same problem as the Jackass crew did for their sequel? after Borat has been saturated everywhere, how will they get any more "real" segments? without real people reacting to Cohen's characters and his manipulation of them, Bruno kind of takes a nosedive in funniness. borat would still hold up, and Ali G, well, we all saw how unfunny he is without real people reacting to him. it's called Ali G's Indahouse.

    It isn't confirmed as Bruno

    by performingmonkey

Sacha said he has a new character, one that he may have already doing in places and no-one has known. If it's Bruno people will just know, and how can they make it any different from the Borat movie? It couldn't be in the UK or anything because EVERYONE knows him. Should be a new character and setup.

    Borat Screening

    by specialspecial

    Quint,

I have an extra ticket to a Borat screening in Los Angeles on Wednesday, if you're in the area. It's just a couple of days before wide release, but it's still a couple of days. Let me know if you want the ticket.

    by david frames

$42M? That's a lot of money for one man taunting homophobes with mock-cocoa shunting. Could be v.good provided its more borat and less Ali G in Da house. I hope he takes advantage of his current power and has a real grab at the fashion industry instead of these affectionate love ins we've had up to now - Pret-a-bullshit and the Devil wears something unbelievably expensive but essentially looks ridiculous.

A jewish guy got an unbelievable deal in Hollywood?

    by jackinitraw

    Really?

    I mean...really!?

    Borat is very funny.

Not overly creative though. Not Austin Powers kind of genius with endless tent pole potential.Mike Myers someone didn't get anywhere near that kind of deal.

42 mill is way too high. That's insane. Sort of like Seinfelds 9 figure pay days and numbnuts who made Alias, Lost, and MI:3 and then moonwalked into a 30 mill contract.

    Sincerely,

    Jackinitraw Steinberg

    What if Borat bombs?

    by bobparr

Shouldn't they have waited a week or two? Snakes on a Plane got this kind of hype an it wasn't very successful.

I am a big Bruno fan. I love the the way he shows how incredibly vapid the fashion industry is.

    Thats a 42 million budget

    by inwosuxred

not just giving him 42 million, right? That is a pretty small budget and it could easily pull that in a weekend or two if it hits at the right time. If it doesn't, it will probably still make more than that on DVD. Not much of a gamble, imo. I think Bruno can be funny, especially when he is in Alabama, but I also thought the next movie was a new character.

    Bruno was better than Borat

    by pwnedbystallone

I love Borat and I can't wait till next weekend but Bruno was always my favorite. The episode from the second season where Bruno goes on spring break and then gets those drunken frat boys riled up only to turn it on them and get them to shout gay stuff was THE FUNNIEST THING THAT'S EVER BEEN PUT ON TELEVISION.

    Bruno has his moments...

    by fitzcarraldo2

the scene with the wrestling team (all half-naked and living in an RV, hmmm...) when he announces they're on "Austrian gay TV!" is classic. However he has a much narrower range of targets than Borat and only provokes the homophobe reaction whereas Borat runs the gamut of race, sexuality, politics etc.

    Borat's 800 screen opening

    by itchy

Fox set that up a while back, after finding out the movie was "testing" poorly early on. Fox Execs have come out and said that they made a huge mistake, and are scrambling to rush it into wide release. Turns out it's been getting phenomenal reviews. Why the disparity ? Probably because the dumb-ass hick rubes who have the time to show up for focus group events are exactly the kinds of idiots Borat is making fun of ... and they probably just didn't get it.

Borat = Snakes on a Plane

    by garbageman33

Just like SOAP, there's been so much written and said about Borat that people may not bother actually seeing it when it comes out. They're already burned out on it. I predict a box office south of $50 million. Which, given all the hype, would be pretty disappointing.

    by harry weinstein

You're damn right gay groups will protest! I totally support the rights of gay folks to get married and do whatever the fuck else they want to do, but some "gay rights" organizations get way out of hand with who they protest and try to bully. Save your energy for the people who'd strip you of your rights as American citizens - God knows there's no shortage of 'em out there. Don't waste time and money on people like Kevin Smith, because that's just stupid and you lose a lot more sympathy than you gain with stunts like that.

Hmmm....Mike Myers a genius? not sure about that one mate. Seems like pretty simple humour to me, 'Yeah baby! and 'Shagadelic baby!' is all pretty tame. SBC isn't just extremely funny, but includes serious undertones. He may not be a genius but his comedy is more intellectual than Mike Myers' will ever be. And the idea he's getting paid more due to the fact that he's Jewish? come on! are you really that single minded?

    Universal is making a mistake...

    by doc_mccoy

...if they think a BRUNO film will be nearly as popular as BORAT. Bruno isn't nearly as well known, and sadly, the fact that he is gay will surely be offputting to a percentage of American audiences. When the news of this movie first stared hitting the press, they made it sound as if Cohen had invented a n entirely new character... that would have been more interesting.

It's been cut to only 800 theaters on Friday because hardly anyone knew about Borat when polled. Wait till the film opens atleast. Stupid waste of $$$.
