Gollum and Morgana join that kiddie fantasy flick INKHEART!!!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I know nothing about this INKHEART... never heard of it before New Line announced they were making it. Now they have added a few cast members to their ranks... First, we have Helen Mirren... Fantastic actress. Variety says she's playing a book collector named Elinor Loredan. Secondly, we have Andy Serkis, a man who grows greater as a character actor in every role he plays, as the villain, Capricorn. The main villain? Don't know. That'd be cool if he was.
Also appearing are Jim Broadbent, Brendan Fraser, Paul Bettany, Sienna Guillory and Rafi Gavron. Appranently, the story is about a father who reads stories to his daughter and by doing so, brings those fictional characters to life. SKELETON KEY and K-PAX director, Iain Softly, directs. At least those two movies looked good, right? What say you? Any fans of Cornelia Funke's books out there?

Never heard of Inkheart. Promising cast though.

Helen Mirren, Jim Broadbent, Paul Bettany... and BRENDAN FRASER?! What the hell was that? I liked George of the Jungle when he did SCHOOL TIES, that was really good, but that was a long time ago. Maybe he's trying to turn his career around (starting with his small role in CRASH)?

I read this book to my girlfriend last year and it's excellent. Far better than Eragon, in my opinion. It's also quite dark for a children's book--think end of Goblet of Fire creepy in some parts. I was hoping they'd make it into a movie.
-
But I do like Brendan Fraser and Sienna Guillory, so I might want to seek out that book...

Fraser's been working on "Journey 3D" which is "Journey to the Center of the Earth" in 3D. That, and a lot of us are still waiting for the third "Mummy" film, which may or may not involve him.

From a parent's perspective, Inkheart is a wonder to read. If you have a child who loves to read, this is a must have. A father who can "read" characters to life? No need to say more.
I worry though that it might suffer in translation, much like the loss felt in the first Series of Unfortunate Events movie. Harry Potter and Eregon function independently as movies and books. Inkheart and Snickett are primarily meant to be read. -
Brendan Fraser is actually mentioned in the front page of the book of Author's notes/dedication. My feeling is that Ms. Funke and he are very close friends. Although I can't imagine him in the role of Mo, the father... so i have no idea whom he would play. The book itself is a marvelous read for anyone who just plain loves to read. It is the first of a trilogy, the second of which is called Inkspell- which I haven't been able to finish for some reason, maybe because i hadn't reread the first. But Cornelia Funke is also the author of The Thief Lord, for anyone who knows that book. All three of the books of hers that I've written reflect a really learned writer who does not underestimate her audience's intelligence yet still has a childlike sense of whimsey... Serkis would make a good Capricorn who is, for all intents and purposes, the main villain. And, for you theatre buffs, the screenplay was actually written by David Lindsay Abaire, who was this past season nominated for a Tony for his play Rabbit Hole, which featured Cynthia Nixon.
Helen Mirren can pretty much do anything she wants, as far as I'm concerned, although i had pictured the character to be in equal portions hoity AND portly- only I can't seem to remember if that's just my imagination working or if there's a reference to that character being large... anyhow, I'm thrilled that Funke AND Abaire's work is getting to be seen by American moviegoing audiences. They are two of my favorite writers. Can't wait! -
I should probably say that I'm not a parent, and that I have from decent authority that the film will, in fact, differ from the book. For whatever that's worth. I can't say if it will be like The Prestige different (i.e. drastically altering certain character aspects and turning points because the source matieral is so mucked up to begin with) or LOTR different (i.e., slightly modified to tell a better visual story yet maintaining all [most] of the thematic elements) but in any event, I have faith in the source material. You could give Eragon a fifty trillion dollar budget and it would still be a Tolkien/McAffery/LeGuin rip off. Inkheart's originality is what makes it so weighty, I think. Okay I'll shut up now.

All three of the books of hers that I've READ. I haven't written any of her books...

Im watching you :)

It's been a while since I read the book, but it was really good and that cast looks pretty impressive. I would never have thought of Andy Serkis as Capricorn, but I'm sure he can put it off.

I really enjoyed this book a lot, but haven't read the second part of the trilogy called Inkspell. I could see this turning out really bad though. There is just something about the book that if you don't do it right it can be really really corny. As I read it knowing it was going to be turned into a movie I thought about all the scenes that have the potential to not really work on screen. It will be very interesting. They need a good, solid child actress and some really good visuals to make this more than just another kids flick. There are so many good children's fantasy stories out right now, but I'm afraid that instead of giving them the care they deserve they are just gonna rush them out and hope to make a quick buck.I recently finished reading the last book of the Series of Unfortunate events and just wish they had gotten the film right so there could have been more because where the story goes is absolutely wonderful and moving. Heres hoping Hollywood gets it right this time.

The book is seriously worthwhile, but is very much a bibliophile's delight. Nevertheless there's plenty of colorful imagery that could translate well in the right hands.
I'm slightly fearful after Funke's wonderful "Thief Lord" turned into a so-so film, losing much of the dark magic of Venice that made the book so haunting. Keeping fingers crossed on this one. -
About a month ago I saw a test screening of inkheart! I never heard of the movie and did not know that it was a book. The movie is definatly meant for kids. So let me know if anyone wants to hear more about the movie.
