Hiros!!
Is Tonight’s HEROES
The Best Yet??

Published at: Oct. 23, 2006, 2:33 a.m. CST by hercules

I am – Hercules!! Hiro turning up at the end of last week’s episode with his jazz beard and his samurai sword – speaking perfect American English – was enough to kick me over from liking this show to loving it. I said as much to my pal Bryan Fuller, who created “Dead Like Me” and “Wonderfalls” and happened to write last week’s episode. Fuller told me his favorite episode is “Hiros,” the one airing tonight. TV Guide says:
Niki is questioned by police about her fugitive husband's whereabouts; Matt's relationship with his wife, Janice (Lisa Lackey), benefits from his mind-reading abilities; Claire divulges her secret to her father (Jack Coleman); Hiro has a violent run-in with Las Vegas high rollers; Peter receives a life-changing message; and Mohinder contemplates leaving New York---and his father's research---behind. Eden: Nora Zehetner. Brody: Matt Lanter. Ando: James Kyson Lee.
9 p.m. Monday. NBC.

show is written for nerds by nerds

    by LordTwinkie

Proven with Hiro turning up looking like some kind of ninja/samurai guy at the end of the last episode. I have no problems with this.

  • Oct. 23, 2006, 3:31 a.m. CST

    Is there a plot yet?

    by Call me Kenneth

I mean one besides hammy actors frowning into the distance (or staring blankly, in the case of that superpower stealing guy). So far, the show hasn't quite reached the heights of the Justice League of America movie.

    BLURST!

    by autistk

I agree, last weeks ending clinched the show for me. I was kinda iffy about it, but that totally sold me. I hope they don't jerk us around a'la Lost.

This show is hands down the best new show this season. And it's been picked up for a full season. In wonder how far ahead the Future Hiro was from. Season 8?

    that last scene clinched it...

    by BizarroJerry

It's looking to me like this show isn't what I expected, which was a show about what if people got superpowers in the "real world". But I'm realizing this is, unapologetically, a comic book on TV. It's just more of one of those independent comics that thinks its too good for superhero costumes. I think the show's improving, too. They just have to work on the predictable real life stuff. Guy tells his wife he had an incredible life-changing day, she responds with cop wife cliches #4 and 7... Or Mister "I can fly but I'm also a stereotypical self-centered unfaithful politician". But then again, I can't help but love that Hiro. He seems to be in a different, more entertaining show than everyone else. I also like that the cheerleader (setting aside her hotness for the moment) wants to be a typical popular cheerleader type of girl, but really isn't.

"Mohinder contemplates leaving New York ..."

    by UserIDGoesHere

"Mohinder contemplates leaving New York---and his father's research---behind" If they went through with this, it would make the show perfect. His wooden acting and ridiculous voiceover are the only really bad parts of the show so far.

    that ending did kick ass

    by Argentino

But the rest of the episode wasn't that great. There are some boring and cliched characters (hooker mom) and some really cool ones (hiro). Its funny how the best character turns out to be the one they added to the story at last minute for comic relief.

I don't like it.. where's the fun and suspense?

    by Cyberfury

I gave it a try, four eps of extremely slow pacing. Too many cut-scenes, to many characters, with stupid angsts arcs (that not even the Smallville writers want to burn their hands on this season) prevents it from working on an emotional level. From the cartoon fonts to the voiceover and musical interludes clearly stolen from Lost. The gleeful Asian guy is incredibly annoying to say the least and borders on an insult to Asians. Yes, this is probably going to be the best ep yet but only because it is a mediocre show at best (What the hell is Hercules thinking!? I do not mind you plugging this one a bit, I know how this works ..but Bryan Fuller is not going to fix this and the show isn't going to make it even if he is your pal)

    by Jumping Windows

"and Mohinder contemplates leaving New York---and his father's research---behind." WTF?!! Isn't this Mohinder's synopsis for every episode since episode 2? Give this A-rab something to do or else don't feature him in the episode. Better yet, give him some freaking backbone and the courage of his convictions. I wanna stay, I don't wanna stay, I wanna stay, I don't wanna stay, Bangladesh has flooded again, blah, blah. There are a lot more things going on to worry about than whiny Indian and his plantastic girlfriend.

Longer upcoming clip last night - Spoilage

    by Ninja Nerd

There was a much longer "coming on Heroes" clip at the end of the shows last night. Nathan can fly FAST...Superman fast. One scene shows him landing in a parking lot (still in the blue jammy bottoms)and seen by Hiro. The "team" starts coming together and Mohinder trys some 'love thy neighbor' action. Can't wait....

I LOVE this show! I CANNOT wait to see Hiro talk this week! I really like Pete, Hiro blew me away when he said 'Wow, you look so different without your scar!' I'm wanting Pete to be the 'leader' of the group so badly I can taste it! He and Hiro are the ONLY ones who are taking any kind of initiative, everyone else is being driven by their circumstances... what do you guys think??

I don't like it.. where's the fun and suspense?

    by Shermdawg

gave it a try, four eps of extremely slow pacing. I do not mind you plugging this one a bit, I know how this works ..but Bryan Fuller is not going to fix this and the show isn't going to make it even if he is your pal) ;)

"Mohinder contemplates leaving New York ..."

    by JonQuixote

Must be really easy to write this part if you just re-use the same segments over and over again, I guess. Aw, I shouldn't complain. The rest of this show is pretty good, if not a little heavy on the cheese (I blame Jeph Loeb for those moments).

HEROES gets better with each episode and if a super-powered serial killer, an impending nuclear detonation in New York, one of the characters' future self, and waking up on an autopsy table with your chest spread open isn't enough "fun and suspense" for you, you need to stop watching television altogether and go read WOMAN'S WORLD magazine instead. Go on, shoo...The big kids are talking.

We got it the first time,

    by critch

We got it the first time, you don't like it. But there's nothing to fix, it's a good show, it's been picked up for a season, it has a quickly growing rapid following, and the ratings keep going up. Maybe you're the one that needs fixing. "The Cartoon Fonts, voiceover, musical interludes stolen from lost..." No, stolen from COMIC BOOKS. The entire show is a comic show come to life. It's a comic book tv show on a large scale. And if you don't like Hiro, then you can't be helped.. There's nothing racist about him. none at all.

I totally agree with the Mohinder comment. They need to get him on board with the program AND FAST. Him continually debating his presence in the states, even after he sees Syler's appartment doesn't do much for me. I actually really like his character, and see where he can fit into the group "sans" abilities, but he needs to stop whinning a bit... he clearly came out there to finish his father's research and find his killer, so he needs to stick with that. See, i've repeated the same thing over and over, and that's just in a post, try it over 4 episodes you writers and that's how we feel!

    Lost v. Heroes

    by trojanwilliams

I got into a huge argument with a fellow Heroes fan about the merits of both of shows. He tried to make the argument that Lost has jumped the shark but Heroes is awesome and does everything Lost doesn't do anymore. I (a fan of both shows) countered by making the obvious argument. You can't compare a show that has been on for 3 episodes with a show about to go into it's 3rd season. No writers in the world can maintain the level of writing and suspense required to build an audience (IMO exactly what we are seeing now) over the span of 3-4 seasons. The fact is that in shows of this sort the mystery is the catch and eventually the lack of answers will grate on even the most devoted fans. I give Heroes 6 more episodes till fans start complaining about it the way some fans complain about Lost. Or do you realy think the whole mystery will be revealed by the end of season 1. Dream on. The difference between Lost and Heroes is that at least with Heroes you are familiar with the genre (everyone's seen a superhero flick or read a comic at some point) with Lost we are all equally "lost" and it's far easier to become disengaged. Personally I think Lost is still the better show acting and writing wise but Heroes does have it's moments. The acting on Heroes leaves much to be desired though. How quickly we forget how amazing and groundbreaking Lost was in Season 1. True it has dropped off some but it's still one of the better written and acted shows on network TV and really is still the standard bearer for the supernatural mystery genre. A genre which had gone untapped for quite a while.

    by WILPOWER

Jesse, or whatever his name is on heroes is totally a rip-off of that black kid Sync from Generation X (or Mimic - take your pick). Whenever he is in proximity a special person/mutant he adopts their powers. Hiro is similar in powers to Colossus little sister. The Painter is Destiny with a brush. The cop is every telepath in the marvel universe, Cheerleader is wolvie sans claws. Looks like NBC ripped of Marvel as much as Disney did with the fantastic four with the Incredibles. Actually all the sudden pwers reminds my of that Marvel line in the 80s - the one that had DP7. How original TV is. Well, at least they are trying. Better to rip off something good than come up with original crap!

    Pete's power...

    by Darth_Nader

Pete's power is NOT flight. After his little painting episode today, my best guess is that he's the 'Rogue' of these guys. He can manifest their powers (with creepy milky eyes). He said something a couple of weeks ago about how flying didn't work unless he was close to them. First he could only fly when his brother caught him, and now he can see the paintings. Did anyone catch if he actually touched Isaac tonight? Maybe he needs to actually be in contact with them. If you look at the Heros site on NBC, it looks like there should be some more people in the lineup. Perhaps we have some more regular Heroes on the way.

    by Capfan

I know we are only a few eps in and the team has yet to form, but can we please get a true super-hero action scene? Thats something that Smallville gets right, Clark always tends to have a show-down with random thugs at the end to display that he is really a hero. I'd like to see a real fight between one of the heros and a villian, or is it way to early to be asking for that with this show?

If Peter is flying high with his brother, but then gets too far away, what then? I loved the flying scenes. Best ever. The cheerleader will save the world. Interesting. If the cop was in his wife's head when she orgasmed, did he feel it too, and also orgasm at the same time? Claire's husband sure enough did look like the telepathy dude to me.

    by kisskissbangbang

Shermdawg, that last post of Cyberfury's spate had your name appended to it--and it referenced Smallville, too. Confess! You're Cyberfury.(I se Bad Mr.Wonka realized this, too, but he didn't cite the proof.) *** Wilpower, calling Pete a ripoff of the Mimic or Sync or anyone else is a bit like calling Mr. Fantastic a ripoff of Plastic Man. They have the same power, that's all. Saying the cheerleader is Wolverine without the claws is to focus on one thing in common (their power) & ignoring her age, sex & all the other differences. If she'd been male with a mysterious past he can't remember & a badass supreme who's the best there is at what he does...now, that might be a ripoff. If she's a ripoff, then what word is left for Hyperion, Gladiator & Supreme? And it's not as if the X-Men themselves sprang from the brows of Stan & Jack fullblown, without precedents. "Children of the atom", they used to be called in the yellow box on the first page, as were the mutants in the popular 50s book of the same name by Wilmar Shiras. Everything builds on what came before (except maybe Eraserhead), and overlapping powers are no big deal as long as everything else is different, which it is in this case. Is there _any_ similarity between Ilyana & Hiro besides their power? And if they were ripping off X-Men, then why call attention to it by mentioning the book & Kitty Pride in the 1st episode? Being kinda harsh myself here, I realize, and apologize; but despite some flaws (it's great on the broad strokes but lacks finesse), the show really excites me, I can't wait to see each episode, & I hate to see it slammed for something that's not even a flaw.

    OK, what i've worked out

    by ahdvd

This show is fantatic, best new show in the last 2 years, and glad it's got a full season to show it's stuff, i expect that unless the station show some fox-like decision making it will last more than one season. Here's some thing's ive worked out - Niki's ex and Clare's father's associate are DEFINATELY the same person, he seems to be some kind of mind 'sculptor' - "hollow him out", seems he can alter people's minds and erase their memory - a sort of walking psychic labotomizer (sp?) - dont think he can read active thoughts like Matt, otherwise he would have been able to tell what Nathan was going to do. Peter's ability is not to fly, he's like some kind of copycat - he can fly when he's around his brother, he could see/draw the future because he was near Isaac - He doesnt have to make physical contact with them, as the time when he 'flew' on the roof of the hospital with Nathan he hadnt touched him, so he must be able to just use their abilities if they are within a certain range from him, question would be on how long he can use their abilities, if it stops as soon as they are out of range, or if it gradually wares off .

    by Aznbuddy

I got freaking goosebumps when Prentice (Peter) did a Hiro on Hiro! Awesome stuff! I hope this show gets better and better. And I really appreciated that Nathan wasn't a dick to Hiro, when it would been just as easy to be...he's beginning to be an interesting character to me past the selfish, one-note politician. Flyboy...not a bad guy. Alter (Niki)...not a bad guy. And she looks like she does have super strength...from the scenes from next episode. (Ok, so the super hero names need work...)

A Hiroic effort (2 hit post once and leave)

    by Napoleon Park

The best new show of the year is... The Nine. But the best written NBC series on Mondays is... Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Ah, but the best new superhero show on TV is... Frisky Dingo on [adult swim]. ***** But it doesn't matter if "Heroes" isn't the best new thing since Black Pepper Jack Doritos (Jays Krunchers Sweet Hawaiian Onion Kettle Chips are) it's a certified hit show and has the full season pick-up to prove it. and it doesn't matter that it hooked the comics fan geeks in first and turned out to be just like twenty different comics from small companies trying to launch their own New Universes, because we couldn't support a hit show on our own anyway. It's the mainstream public, the norms, the mundanes, who haven't seen all this fifty times before and who are seeing all this stuff for the first time (or in the case of people who think this is just like The X-Men, the second time) who are going to keep this thing going. I just hope it holds their interest for a few years so we can see what Kring, Loeb and Sale, te al, have in mind. (I will gripe, though, that having Peter arrange the paintings like panels on a comic book page was pretty cool, but so obvious that I wish he hadn't had to come right out and say it for the kids in the slow seats.)

    what's with the eclipse?

    by samsquanch

No one seems to be wondering that.... it's the logo of the show (opening credit scene) and it appears in just about every scene we see with junkie paintings in them. Also- does it seem to anyone else like the writers are possibly mining this very site and others like it to find out what the nerds have to say ( largest collective hive geek mind to be seen on planet earth thus far) for possible story ideas/redirects? Everyone seems to seriously dislike Mohinder, the purpose of the character, (exposition man) and the actor himself. I don't really understand this, I think the story needs some exposition, and every super team needs it's token 'normal' to either call the shots or be the occasional hostage. We saw way less of him this episode, and I'm wondering if we're somewhow affecting the space/time continuum of television thruogh this talkback. I won't gripe about the acting, because, well, it's a fucking TV show. I think the eclipse will have something to do with all the characters getting their powers, kind of like the "white event" of Marvel's New Universe in the 80's. Anywho, Hiro is still easily the best character, I'm also waiting for a good ol' fashioned mutie Battle Royale (X3 doesn't count) if you're reading this, writers, and don't give up on Mohinder yet. He's got potential. I want to see Ali Larter kick some ass. And I want to see her ass while she's kicking ass. That is all.

    by ookla the mok

Dudes, I've totally figured out the show. First, did anyone else notice the differences between Future Hiro and Present Hiro? They are two totally different actors. Here's why: FH--no glasses. PH--glasses. FH--speaks perfect English, PH--not so good with the English. Plus, FH would be much older so he has to be played by a different actor. Second, two different actresses for I Knew a Girl named Nikki: one is totally nice, the other is totally like the Prince song. I know they kinda look alike, but just because they have blond hair, don't be fooled. Also, we've never seen both at the same time...think about that one.

    by tile_mcgillus

If you can't recognize that those are two different actors then that is sad. Niki's husband is a phaser people. He walks through walls. Think Kitty Pryde but as a scary black criminal stereotype...ohhhh. Okay. Great episode but it definately had problems. Hiro can now hold a full conversation with Nathan but couldn't call Isaac a week ago and say.."you paint future, bomb New York, November 9. Must stop." Also I am getting really tired of people not saying what needs to be said. That is a crutch of really bad writing. I'm glad Peter and Hiro are FINALLY making these characters come together. Peter is definately moving up the bad ass scale. I am definately hooked.

    Heroes and villains

    by rhaps0dy

This show has by far the most the potential i've seen in a long time!! The way it is developing its characters is awesome, each individual character still has alot of intrigue to them even Mohinder! I agree that the acting is abit shabby, but over time these actors will only get better and better in there roles!! For the first time i really liked both the brothers in this episode, which is great i reckon there only gonna get better as they characters fill out more! Hiro is awesome don't need to comment on him! I reckon claires dad is actually a good guy, monitoring our heroes!! Which leads me to the next point how i'd love to see some more villains, we have alot of heroes but not as many baddies yet!! Plus whose to say hiro remains good!?! And it wasn't him that gave peter his supposed scar!? Anyways keep up the good work guys and i'll definitely continue to watch! Does anyone know if it will be picked up in the UK??

It's what I call Creative Poverty..

    by Cyberfury

Look rabid-dorks-with-pixelgirlfriends, I will not deny that the show has it's moments but let's be honest here; those are few. The writers know that when you have two brothers who discover they can fly you can build an entire show around that and every geek will tune in for at least an ep or 4 (enough time to get your show picked up) ..and it doesn't matter how far fetched, startrekkie x-menesque you make it just as long as you have the mother of fail save devices; timetravel! (reset/rewrite at will or as ratings demand). Although I don't know all the details I can smell the premise, plot and where this is going from miles away. All I am saying it has been mediocre at best and from what I have seen (incl. the previews). My point is that when you demand an hour of my time please don't insult my geekness with this watered down heroes concept. It's too bad because the CG is top notch and I am a rabid fan of Mr. Profit Man ..Give me something truly intrueging and fresh. Not a pout pourri of every single good idea from recent films and successful tv shows (Cyler anyone?) that we all have seen. I could be wrong. but I am not. ;) @TheUglyBaby Leave my mom out of this, you didn't see me posting shit about the crack addiction you where born with. Hero is good, not great.

    by veritasses

It has some really cool ideas for a TV series and has a few scenes now and then that rate high enough on the superhero scale to bring out the inner geek and keep the audience hooked, but it’s plagued with bad writing, bad editing, run of the mill directing, mediocre acting, and an uninspired score (which would make a big difference in a superhero themed show). If they’d raise the quality a few notches it has the potential to rank up there along with S1 of Lost, BSG and early seasons of West Wing as one of the all time greats. As it stands, it’s just a “watchable” show held together with an interesting plot that might quickly lose a sizable portion of it’s audience if the story gets weak/boring/ridiculous. If season 2 becomes a “defeat the bad guy of the week” snooze fest like MutantX or Smallville I can see it being replaced with a made for idiots game show like "Deal or No Deal" in a pico second. Zucker doesn’t need to do more reality show programming, he needs to hire better creative staff.

    by ironpony42

I had to mute Studio 60 and revel in the afterglow of Heroes last night. It's the first show in years to get me to tune in religiously. The Flight scene was sweet, the painting skills passed on mean our Junkie friend can get help, while the paintings keep coming. Hiro and Flyboy at the diner in BFE Nevada cracked me up. I'm thinking we haven't heard much about Skylar, and that story line is revving up. I was expecting the Jock to get his brain scrambled into a drooling veggie. Now I'm wondering where his second chance path will take him. Hmm, Good guy, Bad Guy, or forgotten after that scene. Anyhow, I'll be twitching in the corner till my fix next week...

The diner scene bugged me on many levels.

    by FluffyUnbound

CongressBoy's reactions to things are starting to annoy me. He KNOWS he can fly. He KNOWS weird shit is happening. So if "Weird Japanese Guy" comes up to him in a diner and introduces himself as someone else with a super power [while he's standing there in his pajama bottoms, drinking a cup of coffee he doesn't pay for] I think he wouldn't be quite so dismissive of it, and might show a bit more curiosity. There's a lot of "no curiosity" going around in strange places. Mohinder, for example, KNOWS that people have powers - or why would someone have tried to kill him; why would people be posing as the cable guy and breaking into his apartment, etc. So he isn't going to turn into the skeptic of the bunch. And the painter guy KNOWS he has powers, and that his paintings come true, and that he painted Milo flying - why is he going to turn into Mr. Skeptic when Milo shows up and says he has powers? But I'm still watching, still enjoying it, and they have done the important thing with a show like this: they made me want to know what happens. Once the showrunners get that hook in, they have an audience.

    Super Entertaining!

    by Mr Stiffy

Great EP! The show, despite a few issues is super entertaining - I actually LIKE that Nathan denies everything so casually - the flying scene was outstanding. I have zero problems with things like "he didn't pay for his coffee", no problem, the waitress GAVE it to him because he's a "celeb", simple? Maybe he keeps $0.50 up the juxtie for emergencies? (I love the detailed nitpicking of a scene about a cup of coffee just after a man FLEW into a diner parking lot...). It seemed like much better performances all around this week (the decent stayed that way, the so-so picked it up a bit!). The story seemed more "framed" this week to, really had a great comic book feel to it (or maybe I'm just enjoying the show a little more). - Stiffy out

    by rhaps0dy

I'm sorry, but if people are gonna be funny about small issues such as why people in the coffee shop never saw him land apart from hiro and other small things etc etc.....then why the hell are you watching it!! Might as well start saying i don't like it because in reality people can't fly; people can't stop time; people can't survive a branch through the neck!!! I mean really, for two seconds think about what your watching before trying to get all logical!! Its based around a comic book, learn to suspend reality for the sake of the show and you won't find yourself picking at!! Its like when people talk about whats possible in '24' that show rules its not always about whats precisely possible but whats bloody entertaining!!

"Is there _any_ similarity between Ilyana & Hiro besides their power?" Ummm ... they both have swords (albeit Ilyana's was mystical in nature)? I agree with a lot of what you said. True, there are only so many powers heroes can have, so there is a lot of clones out there. Sure are plenty of Rip-offs too. Suadron Supreme should be ashamed of themselves. JLA wannabes. But hey, I was a Marvel Guy growing up. I was just pointing out the similarities … especially in regards to the X-universe. Let's just consider it more of an homage than a rip-off. I appreciate any comic book stuff brought to life on TV. I still feel Luke's nefew is way more Sync or Mimic than Rogue. Nobody goes unconcious when he touches them. Hiro is annoying, I prefer his gambling stripper-loving buddy. His power is bad life choices.

My enjoyment of this show is increased tenfold by...

    by Somerichs

the fact that my wife, a professed hater of anything "science fiction" (her catch-all term for anything fantasy, sci-fi, comic booky, etc) is hooked on this show. I waited until after the third episode, when i was sure she was onboard, to point out that she's digging this "Sci-fi" show. Anyway, Hiro is still the best part of this show so far. I like his current geeky incarnation where he is utterly stoked on the fact that he has these abilities, but i hope this show lasts long enough for us to learn what he experiences to change him into the more serious future hiro. The flying scenes looked ten times better than they had a right to, or than i expected, anyway, especially his landing...that was way cool. Admittedly, there are a million things i could nitpick, but i'm having too much fun to care. Kinda like watching 24, just let the inconsistencies go and enjoy the ride. i wonder if the mind-reading police guy will let his wife in on his secret, and if she'll get pissed (given there apparent problems) that he's been "invading her privacy" with his mind-reading? Then again, if he keeps rockin her world then maybe she won't care... :)

Yo dude, I have no problem believing the impossible, but I ain't buyin none of that improbable shit (I'm paraphrasing). Haven't watched last night's ep yet, but this show needs to kick up a gear or two. The portentious exposition, am dram acting and glacial pace are a real problem for me. Ep 3's ending (post mortem chick) hooked me back in by virtue of the fact that it was a geek-out moment but Heroes is so far just a few neat ideas being batted back and forth. Crap as it is, each ep of Smallville is more fulfilling, and that's saying something.

    Re: Nit Picking things.

    by veritasses

Even in a scifi/fantasy world where the laws of physics, time, reality etc are bent, people still expect certain basic behaviors of human nature and certain cause-and-effect relationships of nature to be maintained. These are the types of “reality” that you can’t break even in a scifi show, and psychologically these aren't "small things" that are easily ignored. If/when these “natural behaviors” are broken people will automatically notice and the fantasy world itself “breaks” and loses credibility as a fantasy world. So while we can imagine people flying, stopping time etc, it’s hard to imagine other people not noticing the guy flying or everyone in the dinner not turning around to stare at Hiro when he’s shouting across the diner in Japanese to his friend, or Hiro suddenly being able to speak enough English to communicate with the congressman when he wasn’t able to say a single word to anyone else etc. Same goes for shows like "24" which constantly and overtly defies the laws of human nature and behavior all the time. What's different is 24 exectues so well on so many other levels, it's easier to forgive (though not completely forgive) those flaws. Also in 24, having unbelievable character actions/motivations is often itself a creative device used to create important plot points to move the story.

    by Aznbuddy

Somehow, I don't think DL is going to be a bad guy. Just don't feel it. Mr. Glasses, also not a bad guy...why didn't he shoot Flyboy in the shoulder before he took off? The real bad guy is... Mohinder! He is going to wear everyone down with his shifting beliefs, monotonous personality and wooden acting! His real power is to suck the life out of this show..so NBC, Tim Kring...do everyone a favor and KILL HIM OFF! Or better yet, have him do a standoff with Elf Girl and have them shoot each other! That would be great!!! (I'm bucking for Niki's costume to be like Emma Frost's, but with her pants like chaps with nuthin underneath!!! BTW, Cheerleader has no neck, buddies.)

    KILL THE MACACA.

    by PwnedByStallone

Virginians will know who I'm talking about. Fuck George Allen by the way. Fuck Jim Webb too, but really fuck George Allen. Anyway this character serves no purpose. Needs to disappear. I agree that this show is good but could be better. I'm not hating. I like the show but the writing and directing is a little bland. And NBC ruined a potentially cool moment this week by showing the politician take flight in the previews. I probably would have geeked out to the extreme being surprised by him bulleting up into the sky like that but I had already seen it in the previews. This show could use some more/cooler villains too. I know the show is called "Heroes" but the best part of any superhero story is bad ass villains. The best part of this show so far was when that shadowy badass dude showed up in the alley and made that FBI chick put her own gun to her head. That sold me on the show but other than that all we get is the douchebag four-eyed father who may not be a villain at all. Come on Peacock. Don't disappoint. More/better villains. No fucking cheesy ass pop soundtrack. No/less macaca. Better writing. Batter directing. More of the cop. More Hiro. More Ali Larter in her underwear. Got it?

You know there is no budget to make this superheroes thing come to life as we are all hoping it will. Mark my words, by the end of the season you will feel robbed of whatever is left of your childhood and this show will leave a scorched landscape for any superheroe themed TV show. It will drag Smallville down in it's wake. Mark my words on this very day! Repent sinners! Repent now!

    Nitpicking

    by Cyberfury

I do not support the nitpicking of things like 'he did not pay for his coffee or no-one but Hiro saw him fly". Look at shows like Prisonbreak. I could nit some mayor picks on that show. It's insane, but it works! That's all that counts. btw. For those of you that don't understand FlyGuy, he's on a mission. He'll beg, borrow and steal to become senator because it's from that position that he's going to lead the rest of the pack with Blond Hulk Girl. (sigh.. sylar theory...

    by Executor

Peter's Dad...? From last weeks episode, in the subway:<p><p> Mohinder: "That is also evolution...we're all just variations of the last model."<p> Peter: "Yeah, just cheap knock offs of our fathers."<p><p> Sylar seems like a mimic...just like Peter. The brothers, especially Peter, are pretty central to the storyline, and what's more of a classic theme than the bad guy being the hero's dad? They've mentioned Peter's dad quite a bit...several suicide attempts (conflicted over powers, or maybe trying out powers like Claire)...he was someone in league with the mysterious Linderman...he's older, which would fit Dead Dad Professor's "patient zero" profile. Maybe he faked his death...

It's funny how some complain about this show

    by majorsharp

When Battle star Galactica can move at a snails pace and bore one to tears. While over at 24 every other scene has over acting and bad special effects. Then a super hero show comes along on a major network with a decent budget and some want to piss all over it or not even give it a chance.

  • Oct. 24, 2006, 2:33 p.m. CST

    Slower paced, but still good..

    by Ironmuskrat

It didn't have cliffhanger ending or the fast pace of the earlier episodes. But there was still a lot to like. Claire's father taking care of her quarterback problem. Nathan letting loose with his flying power for the first time and his reaction to being "blackmailed'. Peter finally starting to realize what his ability might be. I hate to say it but the worst part of the show this week was Hiro, he came off way to goofy and cartoonish this week, the whole scene with him screwing around with the car was just horrible. Other people can try and over analysis the show, but this is bascially a live action comic book on TV, so just relax and try not to think so much.

Sylar eats the brains of the supers and permanently gains the powers of the individual. He is becoming a god basically. So if he eats the cheerleader he will be invincible. I can't understand what he's saying, but he seems to squeal "Hiro Nakamura!" every so often. Hmm. What a coincidence. And just the other day I was drawing a Japanese spaz who some other Japanese guy I was drawing kept referring to as "Hiro". If only I knew what it all meant...

    by Calico Pete

Nathan was having sex w/iKiN. This appears on the hotel's surveillance tape. But haven't they established she couldn't show up on camera? Or is that only when she's committing acts of gratuitous violence? NBC must run iKiN scenes by the AAPM.

    by turketron

"Save the Cheerleader. Save the World" IS pretty hokey... it kind of makes me squirm with its lameness, especially when they have that voice whispering it. Now that that is out of the way, THIS SHOW IS THE BEST NEW SHOWS OF THE SEASON, FUCK THE NAYSAYERS. The only other new show that I like just as much as this is DEXTER. I'm about to get some friends hooked on this by providing them with the first 5 episodes. I'm yo pusha... BTW, yeah, I'd say that Peter's powers remind me of Sync's more than anyone else, sans Sync's Last Dragonish "he's got that GLOWWW!" effect. Nathan's takeoff has to be the coolest on-screen flight I have ever seen. The added sonic boom was CLASS, and I don't care what the physics of such a feat would do to the human body. HRG (horn rimmed glasses) guy is still awesome, and I loved it when he pulled back the curtain and MBG (mysterious black guy) was just THERE. It was that was a totally cliched bad guy intro, and I loved it. Reminds me of how Jason or Dexter or any other serial killer is just THERE when you turn around. This show is awesome and it will only get better. Wonder how long it will take before this gets posted...

    Save the Cheerleader....

    by Russman

Guys, you're forgetting that the word "Save" can be used in different ways. Save her from danger - or save her from being corrupted - or save her from being good, so that she'll do bad for us in the future. We don't know if Future Hiro is good or bad - chances are that he's still a good guy - but we don't know. ANYWAY - did anyone else scream or yell out when Nathan took off? I usually watch TV with the closed caption on so that I can sometimes see the curse words slip through but I loved how they read [sonic boom] when he changed direction.

thanks to all of you that kept comparing this show to Lost in the Lost tb. I am now watching 2 tv shows this year. Thanks guys, I am becoming a tv junkie. I really do enjoy this show though, kind of a comic book, but without the stupid costumes, unrealistic body bulges, and stupid nick names. The Hiro actually kind of pokes fun at that which makes him adorable. I just want to pinch his little cheeks. I wonder how Pete will fair with the mysterious black guy. He can take on the power of those around him...would that counteract the blck guys power? I bet he and the cop could do some damage together.

    re: sidius, Sylar is Peter.

    by Executor

it's already been established that Sylar is the Professor Dad's "patient zero", and he talked him into "realizing his full potential." It doesn't make sense that Peter would gain powers then travel back in time to be coached into unleashing his powers. PLUS, Hiro said he's risking a rift by traveling back in time like this. What kind of rift would Peter create by jumping back in time to be the bad guy. If they stop Peter BEFORE he jumps that would be huge because he would never jump and time would be altered (i.e., the heroes wouldn't come together to stop him, because there would be no sylar, so how could they come together to stop him?). And if they stop him after the fact and Peter learns he's Sylar...wouldn't that alter history too? doesn't make sense.

I think saying "Don't nitpick, it doesn't have to make sense or be good, it's just a comic book" is every bit as insulting to the medium as using "comic book plot" as a perjorative. ***** That said, I'll just assume Senator Nathan Petrelli, "Flyguy", must generate some sort of protective aura (force field) In order for his eyes and eardrums to survive his flight and the soles of his feet to not peel off from that skidding landing.

This show has a lot of promise, but there's plenty of room for improvement, particularly when it comes to writing the characters. Mohinder drags down every scene where he appears. The psuedo-Hindu imagery he conveys in voiceovers is just too precious and his dour attitude on everything leaves a foul taste. Does he ever crack a smile? It's like watching the offspring of the Mahatma and Droopy Dog.

Well in that case, Isaac wasn't drawing the future, was he? He was drawing the past! It only seemed like the Adventures of Ando and Hiro #4 was showing future events, because Hiro -- the ultimate comic collector -- bought the book in the future and brought it into the past. Is that what you're saying? So, it's like you going into the future and buying next month's Civil War #whatever, bringing it to us today, and us going wow! Someone drew the future of Captain America! Amazing! Chew on that one for a bit.

It's too obvious that the innocent-seeming Pixie Chick is going to be a nasty, evil pixie chick... most probably sylar/cylar...always hanging around the Suresh apartment, waiting until Mohinder stops narrating/channeling Deepak Chopra and starts using his brain more, so that it's nice and juicy to eat. Mmmm curried brain... It's too obvious that CheerFather is not cylar, since he and his life partner haven't eaten any brains, only erased them... I suspect he is part of an organization that knows of and is opposed to these gifted people... and that rich guy in Vegas may be a part of the organization and might even blackmail The Flying Petrelli to pass a law or something against the mutants.. i mean heroes... But then again, I might just have the super-power of Self-confusion and be way off... :)

    Firsteen

    by A Martian Realm

Lucky the last couple of episodes became interesting, I was ready to tune out... but there are definitely some things that still bug me. I think Mohinder Suresh has a special ability too -- the power to be annoying. First he'll narrate in your general direction, then he'll pick up a super-powered person in a cab and blab about evolution and special people, then when he is with the same guy will pull a Scully and start contemplating returning home... I think the solution is to replace him with Russell Peters. "Somebody's gonna get a hurt!" Next improvement would be to replace Mica and DL with the actors playing Walt and Michael on Lost. When Walt grows up a a bit more, then they will disappear from this show and reappear on another. That could be their trademark. :) That will also help people not confuse DL with the guy hanging around with CheerFather. Who else can we replace... hmmm... How about Isaac Mendez replaced by Isaac the bartender from the loveboat? Then he wouldn't have to shoot-up to see the future, he could just mix a fancy cocktail instead... AND he could help people with their relationships!

    What's really going on . . . .

    by amaysingstories

At first I was hating it, but now I'm a big fan. My bet for what is going on is that the explosion is not really a nuke, it's Sylar going up in the season finale after absorbing enough power to achieve god-hood, a la Dark Phoenix (think kinetic energy explosion vice nuke). Peter will basically have to absorb/latch onto everybody's powers (invulnerability, flight, time control, telepathy, super strength, prescience) and will become the anti-Sylar. This will close out the season one arc and we'll have a new Big Bad next season. Oh, and Nikki is really the one who did all the bad stuff her phasing husband is blamed for, Cheerleader's dad is a good guy at heart, but will go to any lengths to control/contain the supers (probably killed Mohinder's dad, since it wasn't Sylar's MO). My two and half cents. Destroy at will.

-- The writing is often mediocre. Characters far too often do what whatever is needed to drive the plot forward (i.e., create phony extra drama), rather than what they'd actually do. Most of these have been pointed out already. **** -- Hiro is far and away the best thing in the show (I love the comment that he appears to have dropped in from some better-written show), and Claire is second. Without these two, it's not worth watching. **** -- The plot is compellingly interesting. The whole package is damn good with potential for greatness. **** Now, an original point: does it make any sense to complain that Nathan flying at that speed unharmed isn't credible? C'mon, just his flying is scientifically ludicrous (like most superhero tales, this is fantasy, not science fiction). No problem to say that his power includes immunity from the effects of flight (but not from landing -- that was the sort of small touch the show needs more of).

    Psynapse's Cartoon PhD

    by amaysingstories

Yeah, that totally works in comic book physics. Complete and utter crap as far as actual physics is concerned, but when has that ever stopped TV scifi? Of course, I think you're reaching for an explanation when a simpler one like limited telekinesis (can only move his own body) would suffice. As for how telekinesis works, I'd be more in favor of some unexplained fifth force or some sort of profound "quantum observer" type gobblygook where in their will affects the underlying structure of reality in some limited godlike way. Throwing semi-recognizable physics behind a fantasy scifi show like this just contributes to the crappy appreciation most people have of the sciences. Flame on!

    by amaysingstories

My, my, we are just a bit on the defensive side, aren't we. I would contend my championing of a fake fifth force or a godlike quantum observer explanation is of equal value to your "balanced grav/anti-grav" or "EM force bubble" hand-waving. It's somewhat sanctimonious for you to cry out for me to provide a telekinetic field effect when you failed to provide the mechanism by which some dude in his underwear developed a controlled gravity field (something planets and stars do only by the brute force method) or an electromagnetic bubble (super-magnetic golf bracelet perhaps?). So aside from chill and STFU, I'll just leave it that I'm enjoying the show and all the speculation, crappy cartoon physics or not.

Before one begins casting aspertions, Psynapseless, you might wanna take a gander at that definition yourself. You have two hypotheses, for which you have offered no tests or observational data to justify them being promoted to theories. I won't deny I have a tiny brain, but at least I have one.

As for the Painter not recognizing Hiro's phone calls since he drew a comic about the guy... wasn't that comic picked up 5 weeks in the future in Hiro's first time jump? So maybe the Painter hasn't drawn it yet (although in reality an artist would have to have had way more lead time, but this is tv land)

I may have to kill myself

    by amaysingstories

The shame! The horrible, life-altering shame! I've committed a typo. My family may never recover. And worst of all, I won't be asked back to the spelling bee reunion! And if that wasn't bad enough, Sigh-naps, you had to kick me while I was down with your amazing cut-and-paste skills (mad skillz indeed). You are truly a cruel and masterful Talkbacker. But lets take a moment before I swallow my handful of sleeping pills. If you will look back upon the "theme" of my posts with a somewhat less confrontational disposition, I believe that my original ping concerned your pseudoscientific "explanation" (avoiding the hot-button quibbling between theory and hypothesis) of Nathan's power. It does not matter one whit to me whether we stick with Kring's mechanism, midichlorians, godlike quantum observers, or an extremely bad case of flatulence. It's a superhero show which is too cool for school. It doesn't need justification or explanation. But when somebody drops off a comic book physics speculation of why it all works, he opens himself up to being told that it is indeed a clever cartoon physics explanation (not to be confused with the real thing, which is much less fun and would require a whole lot more support than some intracranial mechanism, and saying it is a "mechanism" does not suffice for describing the mechanism your explanations require). I love the speculation, especially yours, but let's not get all uptight and insulting when someone calls it what it is and offers another equally hand-wavey speculation about how they do what they do. Go back and re-read what I actually posted, and if it honestly makes you mad (not just talkback bitchy) you may need to adjust your meds, like's been suggested. I for one wish there was some decent hard SF on the tube. BSG, SG-1, Eureka, and Lost only satisfy that need in small, spotty ways. Best of luck on your speculations, Psynapse. I look forward to your apoplectic, longwinded response.

    Where the powers come from

    by Aznbuddy

Maybe it's some sort of Firestarter scenario where Prof. Suresh was part of a brain trust, locating and experimenting--sorry--studying these natural supers, isolating the RNA strand (wiki said that's what the symbol looks like) in them and passing it on to their progeny. The tone of the origin of powers in the show is defintely biological in nature as opposed to other means; i.e. radiation (cause we know exposure to radiation is a superhero jackpot), alien, mystical or what-have-you. But I don't think they've said the word "mutant". Either cause they cannot for copyright reasons, or Kring doesn't consider them as such because of the negative connotations to it.

So why isn't Superman a wimpy flabby man?

    by Domi'sInnerChild

Since we're debating flight physics, if Superman has been superstrong due to the sun or whatever spin on that, why is he muscular? Shouldn't we be as dumpy and/or wimpy as a typical couch potatoe since he never has to deal with any real resistance? Oh my two cents on the flying Congressman is thick skinned, but still feels pain (landing should have torn his heals to shreads but he only bitched a little and had no problem walking after).

    The flying...

    by Aznbuddy

Anyone else remember that drug called Velocity 9 from the Wally West Flash revamp? It was invented by Vandal Savage. Users got hooked and were able to run really, really fast. However, because they weren't connected to the Speed Force, they didn't have an aura to protect their bodies, so their feet were ground up like hamburger. They couldn't stop in time because they didn't have the super speed perception that the Flash had. Big trouble for them. So if Kring decided that Flyboy could fly, I'm hopeful that there is a reason why he's not eating bugs, lacerating his face or leaving his jammies behind (you know, like when your trunks are loose and get ripped off you when you jump in the pool? So embarrasing!) when he takes off at Mach 1. A small nod to the pseudo-science behind his abilities, (and everyone else's) will go far to appease my sensibilities. Then again, I really didn't care why The Incredibles could do what they were doing, cause it was such an awesome movie I forgot to care.

    Gwen Stacy

    by Alientoast

Anyone have a feeling that Hiro's friend will become a 'Gwen Stacy' type character? I have a feeling Sylar will show up and Hiro will freeze time but find out to his horror that Sylar can still move in the frozen time. Hiro is given the choice of saving his friend or the cheerleader (aka the one or the many). Future Hiro had saved his friend, thus allowing the bomb to go off. He probably became badass because he recognized the need to be able to fight (he was a weak kid when he first faced Sylar). With the new info of saving the cheerleader, perhaps his friend will die instead? I don't want them to kill him off, but I can easily see the writers setting poor idealistic, happy Hiro up for some major emotional punch much like Peter Parker was.

Psynapse - Know her? I married her!

    by amaysingstories

Kidding, honey. Yes, I have dealt with the type. And does your post count as apoplectic if I imagined you frothing at the mouth while typing it? As for my explanation of how the powers work: It has been hypothesized (or theorized for the English majors out there) that nerves contain bounded free electrons which act as qubits, switches that are either on, off, or exist in a quantum mechanical superposition of the two states. This will be familiar territory for any of you Robert Sawyer fans out there. The difference between animals and people is that we have a soul - we react with free will and creativity vice according to set biological patterns because we are able to access and network these neural qubits. The soul is essentially a biological quantum computer. It is through these computers that reality is defined, in that without an "observer", all interactions would exist in a continually evolving wave state. Our quantum computers "fix" the probabilities and collapse the waves to one discrete state through observation, yielding reality. Kring's mechanism might just be either a greater coordination between the qubits, a larger number of qubits, or a different trapped particle(s) making up the qubits, allowing the heroes a higher status as observers. They can define reality according to their will, instead of the rest of us only able to collapse the various probabilities into the most likely outcome. Thus the universe is really a matter of common agreement, information out of undifferentiated sea of chaotic energy. The supers can change that information. This leads to the possibility that their powers are only a limited, subconcious expression of their greater control over reality. Perhaps Peter is more in tune with his potential, so that his power can be anything he has an example of to pattern it after. Perhaps Sylar understands the actual cause of his power, and is able to override the subconscious inhibitions the others have. Perhaps the explosion in NYC is the final breakdown of Sylar's barriers. Perhaps I'm full of crap and Kring is laughing his ass off at me right now. Once your heads get done exploding, I welcome your attempts to crash my irrefutable logic and unmatched linguistic legerdemain. And, Psynapse, I'm all over that longwinded jab.

By the way, why was sylar so interested in that girl in the closet? He went after her twice.

    Nathan Petrelli IS Sylar

    by nathanpalmeruk

Never thought of Peter as a rogue type character, definitly makes sense, what with his changing abilities. Nathan Petrelli is a telekenetic, so is Sylar. Peter only flying when he is around his brother may be his bro messing with his mind by using his TK to lift him up. From this episode "Hiros" it is clear that Nathan is very well experienced in using flight abilities and has no qualms about murdering 2 people. Sylar also has TK abilities hence the jump/flight when he was cornered and shot. It may be that Nathan is actually a powerful sckizophrenic (ala Typhiod Mary) But each distinct personality has no idea that the other exists.

    If only it were so

    by amaysingstories

Psynapse et alii, actually QM always gives me a headache, and the math pisses me off. They use so many intermediate operators that what you're seeing is shorthand of another shorthand approaching a description of something that ultimately can't be described. Differential equation navel-gazing. For fun, I like to read and write about GR. Big spaceships, big explosions, and brute force bending of reality. Nothing Freudian there at all. As for how my scenario works in regards to oh-so-nice-to-look-at Nikki? I don't think you even have to invoke alternate realities. She has a split personality from the trauma in her life. Since the subconscious is what mediates their access to the higher level of QM Observer control, her split personality is in complete control of her powers. This whole QM soul controlling reality thing should also be familiar to anyone who read the later Ender novels: Speaker for the Dead to Children of the Mind. As far as my speculation goes, even though this is a suitably plausible but hand wavey explanation, I doubt its the mechanism Kring was referring to. I don't have enough faith to think that he'll A) even say what the mechanism is or B) will not revert to some TV scifi star trekky cliche. (please don't flame me. I do indeed like star trek despite some of its crappy SF). In a better world, Kring would either have something similar to our/my idea. In a perfect world, Hollywood would take notice of this exposition-heavy talkback and hire us both on the spot as show-runners.

    Nikki Redux

Also, since her split personality is running the show, and it is already part of her subconscious, it might very well have greater control over reality than even Sylar. She might end up being next season's big bad.

    Comments on Claire's dad (HRG):

    by mbeemer

Claire's dad may *think* he's one of the good guys, but a "good guy" does not: kidnap people, subject them to examinations, and dump them on the street after wiping their memories. And whatever 'authority' he may have to do any of those things does not extend to completely mind-wiping a creep who molested his daughter. One of the things that defines a "good guy" is that he ACCEPTS or PLACES LIMITS on the use of his power to avoid going "over the edge".
