Full Trailer for DREAMGIRLS hits online in Glorious Quicktime HD!!!

Published at:  Oct 19, 2006 11:15:50 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... Quint is off for Prague to lay in Karo Syrup and Red Dye # 5 with various Eastern European Supermodels - leaving the rest of us AICN monkeys to keep shop. Well, first on the list is the new trailer for Bill Condon's DREAMGIRLS. This is the first trailer for the film that I feel kicks a lotta ass. I've heard nothing but spectacular word on the film, but hadn't seen a trailer that made me want to see it beyond just the simple formula of great director, writer, cast and material... Now they have a really good trailer. Here ya go:

    Wow, that looks hideous

    by moonraper

Seriously, could that story BE any more cliched? Hmm, the other girls become jealous of Beyonce... What a shocker! This flick looks like warmed over junk, pure and simple.

it's loosely based on the Supremes who are the reason that storyline has become cliche

    Looked good, btw

    by ribbons

I saw someone put on a production of this just last month, so I'm looking forward to this. Handsomely mounted, I say! I have a lot of trust in Condon as a screenwriter and the pictures look purty, so I'm there. But I wonder if whoever cut the trailer realizes the irony of not putting Beyonce's name in the credits but not Jennifer Hudson's...

    by therightclique

.....that most of the AICN readership is NOT GAY. in what world does this kick "a lotta ass"? what's wrong with you these days? a cliche movie about struggling "artists" is never going to "kick ass" even if you really like the movie. Demolition Man "kicked ass". this will just be the same old crap.

It'll either be great or total crap

    by zardoz

the trailer left me with some doubts about how the music/drama will work. Tough mix. Also, the production design seems a tad over-the-top. So, is it basically the story of Diana Ross and The Supremes? Still, I'll probably see it just for Eddie M...

I hope "virginas" was a joke and not a typo. (but it's funny either way...)

Certainly this does not "kick ass" - however

    by harry weinstein

Looks alright for a musical. If nothing else, it's impeccably well made, and by default it's about a thousand times better than anything Eddie Murphy's been in for a long time - it's definitely a "real movie" as opposed to, well, DADDY DAY CARE. I'll just overlook the presence of Beyonce Knowles - I haven't forgotten how irritating Destiny's Child was though I wish to God I could. Would have been a whole hell of a lot funnier starring Harry Knowles instead of Beyonce. Ultimately this movie's full of singers who think they can act and actors who think they can sing. But for Eddie it's still a huge step back in the right direction.

the real question is box office

    by freakemovie

Chances are all the Oscar buzz and pedigree will help, but usually heavily African American films have a huge handicap at the box office. Case in point: Ray vs. Walk the Line. Both had the same subject, the same Oscar buzz, comparable reviews, and Ray makes 60 mil while Walk the Line walks away with roughly 120. It was shrewd to have three headliners all be stars known to cross the audience race boundary, but with musicals not named Chicago struggling at the box office like crazy, this will need a whole heap of Oscars to cross the 100 million mark.

"Kick ass"? Great cast? Come on, Harry.

    by darth bauer

I sat through the whole trailer and there was nothing special there. Jamie Foxx is a guy who GOT LUCKY because he could act like Ray Charles. He's sucked in everything I've seen him in. Beyonce does not deserve any real parts, just stuff like "Pink Panther" and Austin Powers movies. And Eddie Murphy..."Pluto Nash", "Daddy Day Care", "The Distinguished Gentleman", need I say more. You've heard nothing but good things about it because you can't badmouth something like this or you'll be called a racist.

    Comedically speaking...

    by cornponious

Eddie Murphy is one of the most underrated performers of our time. Please note, though, that NOTHING will ever be like it used to be. Eddie will never be funny like he used to be just like (sadly) Geddy Lee will never sing like he used to, Farrah Fawcett will never look like she used to, and (even more sadly) Jimmy Page will never play like he used to. Sorry for the Way-Back comparison. Still, as polished and well-made as this is, it looks more like a vehicle than a film. Most films of this type do. There's just no way around it. From the very first frame you instantly know what the final scene will be, and what each character will go through to get there. It certainly makes me want to eat ice cream and type on my computer.

I saw the first trailer and

    by emeraldboy

it looked ASS and i dont like the skinny new look Beyonce. There are ads appearing all over the place for Irish Concert in Dublin next year and She looks down or something, maybe someone took away her bucket of fried chicken, she loves fried chicken and apparently she used to have a gold card from her favourite outlet of fried chicken makers and evertime Destiny Child were passing through Beyonce would order and think the same thing happened during thier international tours and her solo tours. She has the same look on her new album. I have never seen her live and have no wish to. Why is it that she refuses to do a medley of Destiny Child numbers in her solo shows. its her band damnit.

Stop complaining about Eddie Murphy's Work!!!

    by logic33

The man is a genius and always have been. He is derided for making kids movies. So he makes a dramatic musical for adults. But that still sucks right? Because the cast is all black people so it couldn't possibly do well at the box office and all the people who "click off SNL right before showtime at the apollo" couldn't possibly be interested in a really well made film because of all the damn niggers running around on screen.

    Don't be ridiculous.

at least Eddie Murphy isn't doing a "buddie" movie this time. But I'm sure that'll change once iSpy2 comes along, or Showtime 2, or Pluto Nash 2...well you get the picture.

    by giger167

Jennifer Hudson will win the oscar for best supporting actress. Movie has oscar glory and success written all over it. And Eddie Murphy deserves a little bit more respect on these hallowed pages lol, the man is a comedy genius. Oh and musical as an artform is undervalued, give me singing in the rain over half the rubbish released in the name of art anyday :)

Okay trailer, but the movie will be great

    by plum

I'm not a fan of the "outline the whole plot" mode of trailer-making, but if people need the obvious drilled into their heads in order to be sold on a movie, fine. DREAMGIRLS is a good musical that was made great by Bennett's original (very cinematic) staging, so with good direction it can be great as a film, too. I don't even mind the presence of Knowles- the light-voiced girl who gets by on looks as much as talent is a perfect role for her. Sure, the story is a cliche, but it's all in how it's told. I can't wait for this to come out. And I pity the fool who lets his insecurity about his sexuality get in the way of appreciating good art. Stick with your spandexed (and in no way gay) superheros, and try to remember that little doggerell about ladies and protesting too much.
