THE GOOD GERMAN Trailer!! Clooney, Blanchett, Maguire, And A Bridges In Glorious QuickTime!!

Merrick here... has posted a trailer for THE GOOD GERMAN. See George Clooney looking heroic! Cate Blanchett looking vixenly! Tobey Maguire looking pissed! It has the STARGATE SG-1 General Guy in it, too! He plays a Colonel here. Took him a long ass time to make General, I guess. This is directed by Steven Soderbergh (a name I may someday be able to spell correctly), from a screenplay by Paul Attanasio (based on a novel by Joseph Kanon). It's set in Post-World War II Germany. Should be cool in principle, but I'm not digging the feel of this yet. The black & white seems...what?...too sharp and pure, maybe? Like it's going for noir but it's too punched up to get there, maybe? Also, that shot of the airfield is kind of 'blech'...has an EPISODE I look to it. Needs a touch more rendering, or something. Still, this could be kinda cool. Check it out -- what do you think? Click on Clooney's noirish pose to see for yourself!
THE GOOD GERMAN opens December 8.

    clooney looks awesome

    by Flux_brown

in b/w, but it does have this modern un noir ish feel too it, which kinda makes the whole b/w thing redundant...

  • Oct. 18, 2006, 8:54 p.m. CST

maybe it was the heroic action bacground music

    by Flux_brown

that took away the noir feeling hmmm...

My God, black and white is so glorious.

    by Barry Egan

Two black and white pictures in a row for Clooney -- good for him. The poster art for this is awesome too.

    The Third Man and Casablanca......

    by Jimmy Jazz

Hey, if you are going to steal stuff to make your movie, why not steal the best? This is classy plagiarism, not some hack remaking some crapola 70's horror flick.

    oh, and Cate Blanchett.......

    by waggy

this went to the top of my list the first time i saw a still and heard it compared to "the third man". the poster upped my excitement a few weeks ago, and this new trailer did it again. can't wait.

    Soderbergh's 'Third Man'?

sign me up for anything Soderburgh does. I'll bet this is greater than the sum of its trailer parts, soderburgh always delivers at least an interesting piece. and Leland Orser finally getting up in the world. he's been awesome since Seven and Saving Private Ryan, always so sincere. my excitement is abounding for this, Borat, Prestige and Fountain...fuck it's gonna be a good run, it's been a while since I was really excited for a string of movies...

  • Oct. 18, 2006, 10:26 p.m. CST

    Fucking AWESOME

    by Veraxus

Jesus, the coolness just wont stop! Apocalypto, 300, Tideland, Grindhouse, and now The Good German! I can't fucking wait!

    terrible trailer

    by BDDres

You can't deny the talent attached to this project...but wow, that was a terrible trailer! The music was ridiculous, it made the movie look campy, and it made the choice of B&W seem completely unnecessary. If that movie woulda had a completely different cast and talent behind the camera...would that trailer had made you interested in it?

you kidding me? what is it even about? i admire soderbergh and his style, but really - no one's going to see this movie.

Poster is a nice homage to Casablanca

    by caipirina

I have that poster on my wall ... the film sure looks interesting

  • Oct. 19, 2006, 3:45 a.m. CST

    Movie looks good but

    by Laserbrain

the trailer su-uuuuuu-cks. They all look the same these days. If they're going for a period look with the poster I wish they'd have followed through on the trailer design. Here we get the same repetitive cuts/fades to black, same off-the-shelf music rising to a predictable crescendo- BLECH. Listen up you fuckers who make trailers. TRY HARDER.

    I dunno....I guess I'm buyin' it

    by IndustryKiller!

I think ultimately it'll be a good movie but this ultra clean green screen "Sin City" noir thing has the potential to get old rrrrreal fast. I think these modern noir films wear their hearts on their sleeves a bit too much. They are letting their inspirations overtake the reality of the piece. It's not gonna work when every single frame and stereotypical line of dialogue screams NOIR!!!!! Sin City and Kill Bill worked because they had their tongue firmly in cheek while paying respects to their retro roots. but when films take themselves ultra seriously it tends not to work . For instance Sky Captain. I hate it when people say "It was based on old 30's serials and was EXACTLY what it was supposed to be". Yeah I get that but while crafting an homage you are supposed to take the best parts of the genre and leave out all the flaws, Sky Captain kept the flaws. Whereas Tarentino when making Kill Bill didn't have horrible dialogue and poorly choreographed fights even know it was inspired by 70's chop socky flicks. but who knows maybe this will be brilliant. Clooney is on something of a role so he gets the benefit of the doubt and Blanchett already seems like she will be fantastic with a spot on accent.

  • Oct. 19, 2006, 5:51 a.m. CST

    That looked great.

    by Nordling

Hopefully it'll play as noir as it looks. It should have had those title cards pop out like in old trailers.

    by Logan-X

This trailer just didn't grab me and I love WWII period pieces. Maybe everyone is right about the music not being right for this one. I agree with chickychow in that the music should have been softer and eerier. Probably go see it anyway with the pedigree involved, but I was hoping that this one would really take hold. Maybe I'm getting too jaded.

  • Oct. 19, 2006, 7:41 a.m. CST

This film has the best poster in years.

    by beastie

The poster alone put this just past The Prestige at the top of my list. Also, being that Clooney's last black & white project was my favorite film of last year, I really can't wait for this.

  • Oct. 19, 2006, 8:59 a.m. CST

    Why doubt it?

    by georges garvaren

This trailer looks great and rarely do these people let you down. And now that all of them are together doesn't that increase the chance of a hit? Who said 'Bonfire of the Vanities'? I'll kill ya !

  • Oct. 19, 2006, 9:17 a.m. CST

They can't spell "medium" for the trailer size on

The 'Stargate General Guy'? Uh, you mean Beau Bridges..

    by endoftheworld

Both Modine and Treat Williams take their cues from the brilliance that is Beau. Pay the man some respect.

  • Oct. 19, 2006, 9:36 a.m. CST

    Just noticed the Bridges title

    by endoftheworld

So I was wrong. But I felt right. I just get passionate about Beau sometimes.

Who the fuck lets SpiderToby beat them up?
Someone should tell Cooney he's a man and Tobey's a little Sea Monkey Bitch who couldn't fight his way out of a wet paper bag.
Maybe it's all the trailer's fault and we didn't see all the Clooney beatings on Tobey, after Tobey stopped hitting him with his purse.
Clooney rocks and this picture looks interesting, even with SpiderMonkey in it.

  • Oct. 19, 2006, 3:03 p.m. CST

You suppose anything to the fact that...

    by TheSeeker7

Tobey Maguire's got no dialogue in this trailer? I mean ya gotta figure he's always good for a decent enough performance (then again Aaron Eckhardt had no dialogue in "Dahlia" and you know theres no way in hell as if Hartnett might've blown him off screen in that)

    Speaking of Tobey Maguire...

    by Ribbons

...anyone notice that the music used in the beginning of the trailer was the same music that they used in the beginning of the 'Spider-Man 2' trailer? Weeeeeeird.... ******** Lots of funny comments on this thread. As nasty a place as TalkBack can be sometimes, I have to admit that a lot of you are cut-ups.

    Batman Vs Spider-Man

    by Saluki

Just rename it that, and BOOM, $100 million opening weekend. Still, this didn't look hot. Bad lead room, the black and white looks too clean (looks terrible outside during the day, as always) and Clooney sounds as bored as he was in the Peacemaker. Pass.
