Published at:  Oct 12, 2006 9:39:09 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Look! A press release!

CBS GIVES "JERICHO " A FULL-SEASON ORDER

Freshman Drama Has Boosted the Wednesday 8-9 PM Time Period in Viewers and Key Demographics and Helped Kickoff CBS's Biggest Night of Ratings Growth

CBS has given JERICHO , its freshman hit drama about the aftermath of a nuclear explosion on a small, peaceful Kansas town, a full season order.

JERICHO, averaging 11.3 million viewers, 3.4/10 in adults 18-49 and 4.6/12 in adults 25-54, has boosted CBS's performance in the Wednesday, 8:00-9:00 PM time period by +48% in viewers, +36% in adults 18-49 and +48% in adults 25-54 compared to last year.

As part of a three-hour drama block that includes CRIMINAL MINDS and CSI: NY, CBS has seen its Wednesday ratings increase year-to-year by +34% in viewers, +22% in adults 18-49 and +30% in adults 25-54, the Network's biggest night of ratings growth. CBS is first on Wednesday in viewers and adults 25-54 and a close second in adults 18-49.

JERICHO stars Skeet Ulrich, Gerald McRaney, Ashley Scott, Pamela Reed, Kenneth Mitchell, Lennie James, Sprague Gradon, Michael Gaston, Erik Knudsen, Brad Beyer and Shoshannah Stern.

Jon Turtletaub, Stephen Chbosky and Carol Barbee are executive producers for CBS Paramount Network Television.

Thanks to Gerald McRaney no doubt. He's the one of the very few bright spots on this clunker.

"He's the one of the very few bright spots "

    by shermdawg

Dang it, I didn't fully "Doogie" that! I was initially gonna say "He's the one bright spot...", but I forgot about Lennie James' Robert Hawkins, thus changing it to "one of the very few bright spots...".There's things that really tick me off about the show, but his storyline has me, at least, listening to it, while waiting on LOST to start.

    by shermdawg

THE INDIAN GUY.Well, not so much him, but the writing of his character. The way they go about having him stumble over the clues left by his father, is more unbelievable than Cheer-verine waking up after her autopsy in the last episode (which was neat).

"Thief" was a good show, but way too short

    by vwantsrevenge

Six eps and it was gone. Is it ever coming back? I am intrigued by "Jericho" but have lost it for "Heroes". The writing is kinda lame. And "Lost" has entered into that unfortunate land of too many questions, just not enough answers. I am a big fan of the show, but I'm beginning to lose interest.

    Good shows, but...

    by nodwick

I think "Heroes" is currently better. Unless "Jericho" can explain away all the inconsistencies of their nuclear war and actually make me CARE about some of the characters, it's going to grind to a painful halt. "The Day After" was more compelling, but I'm willing to give it a chance.

    by white owl

there's a whole thread just for that. this is knockoff-bashing land here. i got a gripe with Heroes, it's that everything is predictable. that football guy trying to rape Claire, Niki's kid waking up RIGHT AFTER she's done digging. The brat-guy walking over the air when he got mad. I saw all of it coming. Writing sucks but the storyline is Watchmen-esque so I suppose I'll keep a little faith.

    a question about Hiro

    by redshirt

Noone has mentioned this, but...Hiro actually caused the accident that put the girl in jeopardy! He told his friend to stop the truck, which then swerved into the girl, then he saved her. However, if he hadn't been there, the truck wouldn't have swerved, and she would have been ok as well. A bit of a paradox, yes? That is the problem with any sci fi time travel stuff. It never makes sense. Also, I wouldn't mind if they toned down the gore a bit. My teenage daughter who watches LOST with me and loves it said the show was too gross and doesn't want to watch it anymore. Although I like Heroes, I am afraid they will turn off too many people with the excessive gore. Maybe it should be on HBO?

    by danielkurland

30 Rock airs opposite, and in spite of "Jericho" not being a bad show, for some reason I just didn't enjoy watching it. I'm happy for Ulrich, although he should still be working on "Miracles" right now, in a perfect world where it was never cancelled. Studio 60 better be announced next. I'm not accepting the fact that it may be cancelled.

    by red ned lynch

Expectations game and cost of the series equals Studio 60's ratings have to be higher in order for it to be safe. High profile cast with Perry, Peet and all the Sorkin alums. A Sorkin show with plenty of pre-season buzz. This show was expected to be exceptionally strong out of the gate and because it's a well known commodity it's subsequent growth potential is expected to be lower. All that said it hasn't been an absolute train wreck, and with Sorkin running the show I'd think it would have to be one not to get at least a full season run. Of course I would say that because I don't want it to be cancelled. As for Heroes and Jericho, a resounding YES! Neither of these shows are where they need to be yet. Heroes is probably a little further along than Jericho, but I've got to think that if the Jericho show runners can break from the extremely by the numbers development they've embraced to this point, it has more potential. Anyway, both shows deserve some room to grow, and I haven't given up on either of them. Good to see they're going to get a shot.

Heroes and Jericho are not "lost" on me...

    by nomihs

Both shows have a very interesting story line. With Heroes it is slow going because I really want the "heroes" to find each other and get on with the show about stopping the attack on New York. Also, the super-villain looks to be quite interesting. He seems to have a few different powers. AND Jericho, well instead of stopping a bomb, life after a bombing has the makings of a great storyline as well. I agree that Jericho needs to find its leads (ex. any of the Greens or Hawkins or even Ashley Scott's character) and start making the audience care about the show more. At any rate, glad they both have been given a fighting chance this season.

    Jericho

    by scrivener

My only problem so far is that I'm a little frustrated with the narrow scope of the show. It's a very "small" drama set in a very "epic" situation. That may be part of the charm, but at some point the $#!+ needs to hit the fan or I'm just not going to care any more. I mean, the whole country was just nuked back to the stone age and this town seems to be hardly affected at all.

Bump up the danger and the chaos, already... and please, for the love of god, stop teasing us with the mysterious black guy subplot

as for Jericho, not so much love from me - maybe because I used to work at a location that was a known target for Soviet tactical nukes... whatever, it just don't float my boat. Heroes now, that's a whole 'nother kettle of Texas chile'. Heroes is one tasty dish. Good archetypes - the Cheerleader, the Hero, the Humanitarian, the Geek, the Detective... As for story structure, I can almost see the writing being done in such a way that the show could either: Plan A, finish the arc - stop the bomb, catch the baddie - thereby satisfying the American fanboy need for 'completeness' if the show were axed; or Plan B - stop the bomb, don't catch the baddie - if the show were picked up for a full season. I vote for Plan B. It's nice to see at least ONE person who isn't all angsty and tormented because he's 'differently evolved'. Hiro has embraced his new-found ability and responsibility to help mankind. No "Jeez, what can one manga-geek do? It's a nuclear bomb halfway round the world!". More like "Of COURSE I gotta do something! I can stop TIME, for fuck's sake!!" If more real people acted that way, no matter what they're mundane real world abilities were, this would be a better world.

    by the selecter

Smith was not nearly as good as some TBers believe, but it's better than Jericho. So which show gets cancelled? Most of the characters in Jericho seem to lack any common sense, much less intelligence. And although it's clear that the "cop from St. Louis" is not what he appears, does anybody believe that the St. Louis police force is a league of supermen? I guess they must if they believe North Korea or Al Qaeda actually has tanks ready to roll into Kansas. It's sad to see so many new shows this season with interesting premises, but horrible, or uneven execution? As for Thief, the horrible ratings killed any chance of it being picked up and made a regular series.

    Heroes

    by sithmenace

is losing me, I'm having alot of trouble getting into it. The only two characters I even remotely care about are the cop and Hiro. The storyline and writing isn't half as good as most comics you can pick up and read today and the fact that the cheerleader has had two deadly accidents in less than a week gets on my nerves, it's too much. It needs to get beter soon or I'm dropping it. Jericho has me coming back for the storyline and that's it, I have no emotional investment in those characters whatsoever. Even the black guy is taking a turn for the worse, he went from being the likable John Locke type to the controlling and unlikable government yes man. Of the two though I still like Jericho better, at least it's original.

I honestly believe that the producers of Jericho flat-out told Skeet to just mimick Jack on Lost. Unfortunately, he isn't as talented as Fox, and it doesn't help that he's often given shit dialogue. But I'm definitely going to stick it out. This has to be the first show that I will continue to watch solely for the circumstances and not at all for the characters. And please, hire a new music person.

    The Jericho plotlines preposterous

    by mowgliworf

I want to like this show. However, it is kind of difficult buy the way the town is acting and the preposterous plotlines. Ok, much of the country dies so lets all go hang out at the bar and drink 1 day later. Or lets have a killer teen party while our parents are smoldering in Denver. But wait, we need to find gas to save this 1 single person in the hospital thats on a ventilator...and we'll get there just as it turns off. Here are some more believable reactions: 1) Tons of hysterical people not knowing what the hell is going on. Getting paranoid. 2) Looting (other than food). 3) Comming up with a plan to handle food shortages, gas shortages, keeping the power on, etc.

Thief, Heroes and a dose of Sorkin...

    by bill brasky

The best line in Thief "You wanted a white girl...you got one."
Heroes is the only show that is really capturing my attention this season. I love Lost and really enjoyed the first Jack/Kate/Sawyer-only episode and the smoking-hot MILF-looking blonde who is one of the others. But Heroes is really great. The Autopsy scene at the end of SE0103 took my breath away and was a cool take on the Volkswagen commercials, when she looks down at herself and says "Oh Shi..".
And finally… my boy Alan Sorkin…And his show…And his political agenda. Hey Talkbackers!!! MAYBE Studio 60 wouldn't have such shit ratings if Sorkin didn't try to brand every STINKING minute of every show he touches with his own brand of radical, leftist JIBBA-JABBA!!!!!! by darksider

Because the thing to do now is to have a fucking huge cast around a non-existant story. Or a story that hasn't developed yet. The problem today is that writers can do snappy dialogue, but not much else. I need a show with a story, not a shitload of whiny dumbasses to try to keep track of or figure out while little to nothing is happening overall. Otherwise why do I need to watch these people? Blade got cancelled just as it was getting watchable. They started getting rid of the useless characters/subplots and things were getting in motion. The dialogue was getting much better as well. BSG is the only thing I've got left now.

    The Smith love baffles me

    by bytor

It's so BAD...I don't understand. Almost the exact SAME storyline as Thief, only less interesting and with more pointless crap like the motorcycle scene or the swiping-the-harddrives thing. Written by monkeys, no doubt. Jericho is...well, hard to explain. Yes, it's mostly a Lost clone mismashed with Stephen King's The Stand. And yes, the overall "nukes" arc makes little sense. So do some of the smaller details (hey, power is scarce...should we find a small, low-power-draw TV or keep cranking up the 50" plasma?). But what grabs me is the B storylines...MysteriousBlackFamily, BitchyTeenAndTheGeek, CreepyGroceryStoreOwner, and so on. That's all workin' for me. So I'll stick with it for a while. And Heroes...this might get good if NBC institutes a new policy: any writer on this show that employes a very tired cliche will be shot. Also, stop letting George Lucas write the dialog. (And 30 Rock was awful. Just awful. I kind of liked 20 Good Years though.)

    by bytor

We keep the BAR running? Oh sure, we need gas for the clinic, and hey, maybe getting the fridges going at the grocery store might not be a bad idea, but fuck all that, we'll burn a crapload of gasoline in the BAR'S generator. Fix this, CBS, because MysteriousBlackFamily won't hold me indefinitely.

Agreed one hundred percent. That and the fact that the sopranos last half-season almost pushed me away. They better fix this thing to end it. But enough about Sopranos and Carnivale, I put my mysticism and unanswerable-questions faith soully on Lost, now. Please don't succumb to the fate of Twin Peaks...

...Too fucking right. Been a fan of Elizabeth Mitchell for several years now, and nice to see her finally getting some major high-profile work on a series like this. Hiring her for the "Juliet"-role was a smart move on the producers' part.

I am trying so hard to like Jericho, but it's easy

    by novaman5000

The show has terrible pacing, it either draws shit out too long or blows it's load too early, and no one acts realistically. I think the set up is so amazing, it kills me that they're shitting all over it. Heroes continues to improve as it goes on, but to whoever said Heroes was better than Lost, you're on fucking crack.

mowgliworf, dead on. Jericho is losing me

    by domi'sinnerchild

I like the concept and the cast isn't bad, but it keeps misfiring. Nobody is reacting realistically. I could buy a couple of people getting their groove on post-apocalptic, but the whole town? Skeet is apparently Superman and makes it to every rescue situation. I think my biggest problem is (in contrast to Heroes which has pulled this off wonderfully), every time Jericho has a big reveal Lost moment, there's no wow factor. Lost- Polar Bear. Heroes - Frozen missing skulls with a nuke. Jericho- Dead birds... uh, so. Lost- He couldn't walk. Heroes- Autopsy. Jericho - a plane crashed blocking the road... meh.

    by immortal_fish

Clearly, it that is plenty to make it a Lost rip-off (/eyeroll). To further expound upon George Carlin's theory -- I think humanity has pretty much figured out all the different ways to nail two pieces of wood together. Hell, Lost itself is nothing new either. It's Rod Sterling's vision of a diverse Gilligan's Island mixed with the Young and the Restless.

    Heros SPOILERS from TV Guide

    by immortal_fish

I'm posting here since Herc's Heros 1.3 thread has kinda died off. Evidently my prediction of Niki's kid being the result of her and Hawkins's (aka CBGB) coitus is rawng. TV Guide says that the kid's dad makes his entrance in ep5 and CBGB appeared in ep3. Furthermore, kudos to those of you who spotted Peter as being the Rogue of the bunch. I had suspected in the hypothesis while you guys invested in it, and I should have jumped onto the bandwagon. Gosh. I wonder if season 1 ends with Claire and Peter standing up against the Big Bad? (/sarcasm) As it stands, Simone is the only normal according to TV Guide. She's apparently the meat prop for we normals to identify with.

Flux_brown, "you have the Mark Foley scandal"

    by immortal_fish

Cripes. Just when you thought it was safe to click on a Heroes/Jericho thread...Look, Foley -- a guy I think is a definitive scumbag -- hasn't been convicted of anything. He wrote repugnant letters to a 16 year old. That's it. Who knows if he actually met up with anyone of illegal age (it is known that he interacted with an 18 year old)? The age of 16 is the legal age of consent in DC. Sure, as a conservative, I take umbrage with the fact that 16 is too young to consentually engage in sex. It's 2 years less than those deemed mature enough to die for their country, vote, or drive a car in some places. But the facts are what they are whether or not they are convenient for your October surprise. Especially given that lefties believe in sex education and contraceptive dissemination in elementary schools since the "kids are gonna do it anyway" mentality. As long as they don't do it with 50-some year old Congressmen from Florida, that is, even if they are deemed old enough to make their own mind up. The Clinton appointed Justice Ginsberg believes that the federal age of consent should be reduced to 14! Then you have to consider Gerry Studds, Democrat congressman of MA, that admitted to doing much worse (meaning that he actually ENGAGED in his solicitations), and was elected back into office for another 12 years thereafter by his constituents! Suddenly, Foley ain't that much of a 'scandal', is it? I truly hope that American voters see through this selective moral high ground that is ultimately a transparent smear campaign against the GOP in whole. Dems have no ideas. No shocker that they play their trump cards from the bottom of the deck. Funny, considering the next election is theirs to lose given the current political climate.

    The problem with Jericho

    by ace ny

I like the premise of the show, but I loved the movie Red Dawn (however in the eighties it was concievible that the Soviets would invade). That being said; who besides the Russians could nuke 6 or so cities (Pakistan?) and there isn't any country that has a navy that could get tanks over here, so that premise is really unrealistic. But the biggest
problem I have with the show, is how happy everyone seems most of the time. Remember 9/11? Weren't most of you upset and depressed? Remember how you felt in the early hours when the information was all over the place about how many planes were hijacked and what was happening? That bbq they had, in the midst of a massive attack on their country and NO information about what was happening strained credibility to say the least. That being said, I still tune in, in the hopes that it turns out to be a ok show in the Red Dawn/The Stand sort of way.

Jericho needs serious help, but I'm too stupid to stop

    by inwosuxred

...watching. The town is more happy/cozy than Stuckyville, and the whole country just got nuked... Well, except for the teens, who feel they'd rather exclude the "weird" kid on what could very well be the end of the world. They need to get that show darker and more depressing, and they need to do it fast. There is almost no sense of paranoia on this show, which is just insane. I include myself in the group that finds none of the characters likable, and some of that is probably because they don't seem to be facing any real adversity. They also just seem so plain. With the exception of mysterioius black family, I don't care what any character does or says, and I don't care what happens to them. I have a hard time telling the white people on this show apart, even the ones that seem to be the main characters. Maybe this show is meant to be a comment on society and how white people are boring? They better hire some new writers and have some interesting characters stumble into town(or better yet, zombies) if I'm going to make it to the end of this thing. I don't think the acting ability of the current cast could even support better writing. I think I would prefer if this was like a pre-season Lost show where the narrator tells the story and they edit out all the boring parts, which in Jericho's case is about 95% of the show. I wish I wasn't a sucker for end-of-the-world type stuff.
It seems to me that the blasts weren't warheads, but were on the ground, since we would have seen them coming, especially to central cities like Chicago and Denver. I actually think the skynet theory, or some sort of internal accident/sabotage makes the most sense.

    Call me crazy, but...

    by zacdilone

...the reactions of the townspeople on "Jericho" don't bug me as much as they do everyone else. Sure, there are some cringe-worthy moments, but the idea of the community attempting to hold on to some idea of normality strikes pretty true for me. Remember...it's only been a couple of days since the attacks in their timeline. People are still in shock, and still trying to figure out the scope of this thing. Granted, if the fear and paranoia level isn't ratcheted up in the next couple of eps then I'll jump on the "Oh, give me a break" bandwagon. But so far, given my experience of small town America, it hasn't been as far off base as others claim, IMHO.

Jericho - Lost - The Nine & Something about Heroes too

    by schlechterwolf

The most surprising thing about Jericho so far has been the ratings and the full season order. Jericho is boring, Skeet is miscast, and some otherwise talented folk are shamefully underutilized -- and yet, there's something about a weekly TV series where the premise is nuclear war (or so it seems). A more apt title might have been "Lost In The Mushroom Clouds," but I promised myself I wouldn't make any comparisons to Lost...but here I am reminding you all that watching Lost is a lot like watching Jericho, only with better production values. Lost stopped being good at the end of season 1. The problem with the whole "Twin Peaks" approach to television, of course, is that once you've finished watching the first season, the seasons that follow are only there to keep the money coming in. I like it better when David E. Kelley does a series, writes most or all of the scripts for season one, writes most of the eps for season two, and then leaves to start another show. At least then you get a couple of well written seasons, and the occasional arc, too. We all know that they'll drag out Lost, and Jericho, and The Nine for as long as they possibly can, or until the majority of us have given up on our self-induced sense of viewer loyalty...speaking of The Nine, I'm intrigued by what might have gone on inside that bank. I figure we're in for an attempted rape sequence at the least, so that's good news. I hope it's Chi McBride. Has he gained more weight since Boston Public, or is it just the Zoom mode on my widescreen TV? The Nine, Jericho, Lost, and any of it's kind would be decent to great (decent being Jericho. I'm not sure anything can make it less tedious) were they each limited to one series of 24 eps...Ignore the comic geek complaints about Heroes, and just have fun watching it.
