HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams !!!

Published at:  Feb 11, 1999 7:30:44 AM CST

Glen here...

...with a quick HAPPY BIRTHDAY! to two legendary composers, who have also profoundly
impacted my overall Geekness.

On Monday February 8, composer John
Williams
turned 68.

For those who might not know (hey, there are a few young people
who read this site - god help 'em), Williams scored such films as The Star Wars Trilogy,
Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws, Close Encounters, the very impressive list
goes on.

Wednesday February 10 (yesterday), composer HREF="http://us.imdb.com/Name?Goldsmith,+Jerry">Jerry Goldsmith turned 70. Goldsmith's
extensive and diverse list of amazing works include The Omen, Planet of the Apes, Poltergeist, Alien, and several Star Trek film / television outings.

So, HAPPY BIRTHDAY guys. Your works have profoundly impacted a great many lives, and
are absolutely invaluable to both film and television fans - and the industry in general. True artists in
an often unforgiving and uneven medium.

((Glen Note: the composer's names in this article are actually links to The Internet Movie
Database (IMDB). If you have a few moments, click on their names to jump directly to their
filmographys. You might be surprised how many times you've come across works from both of
these composers...))

    John Williams Fun Fact

    by pope buck 1

By the way, did you know that John Williams, with (I believe) 38 Oscar nominations, now has had more career Oscar noms than any other person now living? There's someone else, I forget who, with 45, but they're dead. Just thought you all should know. And I think I got in first!

Speilberg and Lucas owe their lives to Williams

    by l'auteur

does anyone else think that John Williams played a bigger role in the successes of Speilberg and Lucas more than Spielberg and Lucas themselves? Think about the films... my favorite parts of almost any Speilberg film, as well as THE STAR WARS TRILOGY, are the parts that have the great musical pieces that we all love. For example, when we think of the shark, we think da dun da dun da dun da dun bum bum BUM bum bum bum BUM bum dadundaddundadundadun.... when we think of RAIDERS, we think of Williams' action masterpiece, "The Desert Chase", but if we want really really cool action music, we watch STAR WARS so we get to hear his "TIE Fighter Attack"! Why do we watch THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK the most? Darth Vader. Why do we love the Dark Lord of the Sith so much? "THE IMPERIAL MARCH" of course!! not to mention "The Ark Theme" "Han and Leia's Theme" "Schindler's Theme" "The Force Theme" "The March of the Slaves" "The Motorcycle Chase" "Indy and Marion's Theme" "Superman's Theme" "Clark and Lois' Theme"... and on and on. This is why we love these movies the most! Don't get me wrong... I think Spielberg is THE MASTER OF SPECTACLE and Lucas, well ill wait until the PHANTOM MENACE before i decide how good a director he is even though STAR WARS is my fave movie ever, but i think these guys owe nearly all their success to John Williams. Williams' films have been the highest grossing films ever. He should be the highest paid person in Hollywood. When he passes on, movies just wont kick ass anymore, because even though we think some movies with OK scores kick ass, when we hear the Imperial March, we know that that is movies are supposed to be scored!
