An Image From TRANSFORMERS' Detroit Shoot!!
Merrick here...
Nakedllamabot (eeeewww) sent in this image from the TRANSFORMERS movie Detroit shoot.
I’ve glanced around (admittedly, somewhat cursorily) and couldn’t find this image on any TRANSFORMERS boards, and whatnot. If I’m in error, please feel free to identify its point of origin in the Talkbacks below.
The dynamic of this image makes me smile: feels like a Michael Bay GODZILLA movie (complete with the woman looking skyward in horror). Actually, maybe that’s not a bad way to approach this film? A Michael Bay GODZILLA movie. Hmmmmmmmm…
It’s tempting…so tempting…to say something snotty. Like: “I’m not sure if this image is actually from the TRANSFORMERS movie, because it could have been snapped on any given day in Detroit.” But I won’t say that…even though I just did.
Thanks out to Nakedllamabot for sending this pic along. CLICK IT TO ZOOM IN ON IT!

So what!?
-
and i'm STILL not looking forward to this movie!
-
....something falls from the building. They had to shut-down a Detroit street for that? Worth it!
-
...and the malginant beings that inhabit them!
BEWARE, I SAY!!1
*vanishes in a cloud of methane* -
Am I missing something?
-
Lookout people!!!
-
I'm begging you, somebody clue me in about that animation up there with harry and the lady's head...what movie or tv show did I miss?
-
so the weird lookin, high-crotched transformers throw sparklers at people?
-
Sparks invariably result.
-
Must flee from invisible robots. RUN YOU FOOLS!
-
That or Bay just likes it as a sub for Los Angeles. Not sure why he seems to shoot there all the time. Must be blackmail.
-
invisible robots, a break dancer, a spark on the sidewalk.
-
its just a drive-by people. typical monday in detroit.
-
Nooooo!!!!!
-
Somehow it just doesn't look as interesting before post.
-
has great legs. She's a Hottie McHottie ooooh yeeeeeaaaaah!
-
want to go to Detroit?
-
Whatever. Fuck this movie.
-
It must be the new invisible transformer. Really though, you would think that Transformers would have to tech to turn invisible.
-
What a stud.
-
Those aren't even creative DetrOiT riffs, guys.
Bay shoots in Detroit because he loves the texture - (specifically the old Central Depot}, the city takes good care of him, and it's easy to shut down intersections.
Here are a ton more images I found from that shoot {I ended up as a construction worker 'extra'} -- which was aparently from the final showdown sequence:::

A guy! And he's DIVING! Stop it, right there, I've seen too much... At least NOW we can let out a sigh of relief that the movie's gonna be awesome.
-
NOW how am I supposed to feel when I watch the movie and see Johnny Cage holding back women while some dumbass dives on the floor?
-
Are you sure you got the right picture???
-
Is that 50 Cent firing from the roof?
-
"Just another manic Monday....."
-
yeah, that makes sense. Godzilla was fun for about 10 minutes then forgotten in another 10.
-
The white girl on the far left, the old man next to him, Johnny Cage, the black girl on the right, and the guys in the back.....none are looking at exactly the same spot in the sky. Try dangling a pen above the picture and you'll see what I am talking about.....unless there are multiple things in the sky, like Sweeps or something.
-
Not to mention the fact that he must know the locals eat it up and give his movie a ton of free publicity. I heard a lot of talk on the radio and TV about the shoot. I bet that doesn't happen in NYC or Vancouver.
-
There's the mugger mover, er, 'people mover' in the background. That looks like either Woodward or Griswold. That or Fort or Lafayette. Or I'm totally wrong. Any Detroiters want to chime in?
-
In front of the old man on the right. What a dumbass. (Hey, this "news" item is stupid shallow, so all I'm doing is analyzing the pic.)
-
TOO SOON!
-
I guess it's Washington and Fort from looking at your pix. The big one at AICN is Fort looking west between Shelby and Washington?
-
killing a potentially fantastic franchise before the film comes out.
-
Why is it so good? Because you can't see any of the fucking awful robot designs in it. What a fucking joke this film is going to be.
-
There's a plant in one of the windows. And an even bigger one in the street.
-
It's really a shot from that "Will Smith Is Legend" -- that's Will doing his ending credits rap gig.
-
I remember reading on another talkback that it was a reference to an old Busby Berkeley film, you know, with the hundreds of girls and the syncronised swimming? Usually in a swimming pool, funnily enough..
Anyway, can we have a NEW one soon please Harry, this one's been up for what seems like months now.. -
What a stupid ass concept transformers is. I just cant believe that they are making a film out of it. A Robot disguised as an Ghetto blaster with an dog/ tape as pal. Oh boy...the only reason this crap ever was invented, was because of the toys they were planing to sell. Helllooooo....wake up.
-
Schoolhouse Rock!
-
Turn your monitor upside down and hold a blue-tinted mirror at 65 degrees against the window reflection. Bong hit not included.
-
Looks like John McCain.. Or Colonel Tigh..
-
Damn you Michael Bay
-
...you can see a guy taking a piss behind the black car middle right. That cop is going to have to arrest him after he deals with the invisible sparky Transformer.
I've been playing Transformers game from a couple of years ago on PS2 recently - I'm no transformers geek but what was wrong with using those designs for the movie? I thought they looked pretty cool and functional. -
upward, people are running away from the spot on the sidewalk. yeah this is a transformers pic. what else could it be really?
-
. . . from the TF cartoon. It would jump into a TF and short circuit it or shut it down somehow. Lame post.
-
In future, unless you have a picture of Jazz ripping off Starscreams nuts with his teeth, please don't bother posting anything. Pathetic.
-
is that Turbo and Ozone I see?
-
thats nothing special. At least you all know stuff will be constantly blown up in this movie. Even when they talk explosions will come out of their mouths.
-
On "The Island" commentary, he said that he shot in Detroit because we could close down stretches of downtown for extended periods that could never happen in LA. (It's not like there's any business left their after 20 years of King Coleman Young and the current Thug Maya Kwame regime.)....The part when Scarlett and Obi-Wan call the house where her clone donor's kid answers the vid-phone was shot here.....And yeah, I tapped her, yo!
-
Transformers there...or test screening it.
-
Totally makes the picture worthwhile.... too bad everyone else is commenting on everything else like a bunch of goobers.
-
There's a man on the set who looks like he could be wearing a suit!
-
To see the motherf'n Tigers!!!! Yeah! Kiss my arse Yankees!!!
-
Correct you are:: Fort & Shelby was the main intersection, and he covered it so thoroughly it'll probably end up as a few different areas in the film. Word on the set was that we shot background plates for the big Optimus PRime/Megatron showdown...
PS:: DETROIT would have made a helluva more authentic Gotham City than Chicago, Nolan.
-
the part where the Transformers end up in a chop shop in River Rouge?
-
At any rate, it'll make for another fun game of Spot the Detroit Landmark for us Detroiters. (See also: Out of Sight, The Island, 8 Mile.) PS: Did anyone else notice the big Yzerman billboard in The Island?
-
There's actually people criticizing this photo! It's ok. If there's nothing to say about the picture, you don't have to. It's not required. And you gotta go with the girl in black on the right. Sure, whit skirt girl is hot, but she'd be all "as if" when you hit on her. And here I thought I'd be the only one to mention her. Sure, it's kinda sad, but I'm glad I'm not the only one.
-
Girl on the left, I mean! Grrgh.
-
I know because I was there as an extra, although you can't see me in this pic. I recognize the location and the people clearly. You can go to MySpace.com/transformersdetroitextras and maybe identify some of the people in the pic, but the facial expressions on these extras' faces makes it hard to tell who's who. Plus, only 23 out of approx. 100 extras signed up to be on the MySpace page. I'm Daniel on this page.
There are a couple pics of the extras here: http://flickr.com/groups/transformersmovie/pool/ that might make it easier to identify us.
Detroit is a great place to shoot. The city makes it easy on the film makers to shut down streets, probably because major films like this don't get made often there (although Bay did film part of "The Island" there recently). -
This is definitelly authentic. I was down there are a different time hoping to get some photos but all they were filming were crowd reaction shots like the photo. There were no SFX at the time I was there. This took place on Fort street just a couple blocks from where I work and only a block over from Congress where scenes from the Island were shot.
-
Twas driving me crazy!
-
Sorry, but the URLs I just posted have a space in between each URL. So if you cut and paste them they won't work. You have to eliminate the spaces. Sorry. :(

That woman looks like she's looking skyward in ECSTACY
by sir hickorybeans mccrackin
srsly.
-
This happens on every Bay set. Those aren't SFX, those are the hopes and dreams of fanboys around the world self combusting, happens every time that prick yells action!
-
Mexican guy in hat: "That is it! We are going to BREAKDANCE FIGHT!".
Black Guy: "You CAN'T beat my crab walk!"
Mexican guy in hat: "Oh yes I can! I will now spin pathetically and shoot sparks from my ass!"
Crowd: "AGGHHH!"
Johnny Cage: "OMG! That is the best spinning I have ever seen!"
Cop: "I'm getting to old for this shit." -
Anything less that Bay slitting his throat on a broken shard of mirror trying to get in his last line of coke is going to be underwhelming.
-
Shes in between the flame sparks. She looks like shes laughing. BOOM.
-
Mayhem in the streets! Hollywood glitz transported to your doorstep! The best my hometown area ever got was Jaws 2 filming at a local beach. Not Jaws. Jaws 2. Yeah, I know.
-
transforming cars and trucks is partially shot in the Motor City. Y'know, because they're both depressing.
-
... they had california license plates placed over various cars on the set, so I don't think it'll take place in Detroit at all. They'll edit it all together so that it looks like it all takes place either in LA or some random California city. Either way, I'm happy they at least filmed some of it in Detroit.

Industrial Sparks...That Are Magic!
-
is Sam Bernstein, a lawyer who advertises on TV.
-
Michael Bay actually seems like the PERFECT fit for a toy-based movie. And despite Shia Labeouf coming off like an obnoxious, mouthy know-it-all in that interview awhile back (it could have been subtitled "actor with delusions of grandeur rationalizes being in Bay film"), I'm still intrigued to see if Bay can deliver on the fun with this movie. Even his worst detractors should admit it is a dream project for him. I really hope he pulls it off.
-
That could be just an average day in Detroit. Personally I think that guy getting sploded was a Yankee fan who happened to be in Detroit after the ALDS.
Now answer my question where are the big robot cars?! -
Are people still interested in this movie?
-
´NUFF SAID.
-
Had to have been extras farmed in from the suburbs.
