Dane Cook solidified the notion that he is one of the least funny humans on the planet, but Amy Poehler was HILARIOUS as Kim Jong-Il.

Look! A press release!

"SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE" LANDS TOP TALENT FOR OCTOBER

Jaime Pressly ("My Name Is Earl"), John C. Reilly ("Talladega Nights") and Hugh Laurie ("House) All Make "SNL" Hosting Debuts

Music From Critically Praised Acts From Diverse Genres: Corinne Bailey Rae, My Chemical Romance and Beck

NEW YORK October 3, 2006 NBC's "Saturday Night Live" loads up some of the hottest names in entertainment for its three October shows. October 7th features Emmy nominee Jaime Pressly from "My Name Is Earl" and U.K. soul singing sensation Corinne Bailey Rae. October 21st brings Oscar nominee John C. Reilly ("Talladega Nights") with music from My Chemical Romance and October 28th features Golden Globe and SAG Award winner Hugh Laurie ("House") and the critically acclaimed music of Beck.

Hosting October 7th is Jaime Pressly whose beauty, talent and screen presence have earned her many solid film and television roles. However, her breakout role as Joy on NBC's hit comedy "My Name Is Earl" opposite Jason Lee has catapulted her to the next level. Her critically acclaimed performance was recognized with a 2006 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress. In its inaugural season, "Earl" received the People's Choice Award, two TCA Awards, and a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series and Emmys for writing and directing. Pressly will soon be seen in the independent feature film "DOA: Dead or Alive," an adaptation of the popular videogame franchise. Previous film credits include "Torque," the teen movie satire "Not Another Teen Movie," "The Adventures of Joe Dirt," with David Spade, "Tomcats" and the hit teen comedy "Can't Hardly Wait."

Hailed by The New York Times as "the most celebrated soul singer of the year," Corinne Bailey Rae joins Pressly as musical guest. Bailey Rae's self-titled debut album is certified gold in the U.S. and has worldwide sales exceeding two million in just six months. The U.K. singer-songwriter debuted at No. 1 on the charts in her native Britain (the first female artist to do so with a debut album) and has been lighting up the States with her hit single "Put Your Records On."

October 21st brings acclaimed actor John C. Reilly to Studio 8H. Reilly recently explored his comedic side with "SNL" alum Will Ferrell in the summer smash "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby," after earning substantial acclaim in scores of dramatic films including "The Aviator," "Gangs of New York," "The Hours" and the musical "Chicago" (for which he received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations). The Chicago native made his debut in Brian DePalma's "Casualties of War" and went on to play memorable characters in scores of films from "Hoffa" and "State of Grace" to "The Perfect Storm," "The Good Girl," "Anger Management" and his recent as a singing cowboy in Robert Altman's "A Prairie Home Companion." Reilly has worked with some of the top directors in film, but has enjoyed a specific association with acclaimed writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson starring in three of his praised films: "Hard Eight," "Boogie Nights" and "Magnolia."

Joining Reilly and making their SNL debut is boundary-pushing rock band My Chemical Romance. Called "Rock's New Superheroes" by Spin Magazine and "one of the best rock bands in America" by the New York Times, the New Jersey band will perform tracks from their eagerly anticipated epic album, "The Black Parade." "The Black Parade" is the follow-up to the band's platinum-certified 2004 release "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge."

Finally, on October 28th, the doctor is in as "House" star Hugh Laurie toplines SNL. Hailed as one of the best actors on television, Laurie stars in the hit medical drama and has garnered critical accolades as well as a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award and an Emmy nomination. A veteran of groundbreaking British television comedy ("A Bit of Fry and Laurie," "Black Adder," "Saturday Live" and "Jeeves and Wooster"), Laurie has also appeared in films including "Flight of the Phoenix," "Sense and Sensibility," "Peter's Friends" as well as the family hits "101 Dalmatians" and the "Stuart Little" films. Educated at Eton and Cambridge University in the U.K., Laurie was elected president of the venerable Footlights Revue, where he worked with frequent castmates Stephen Fry and Emma Thompson.

Marking his sixth performance on the show is the ever-innovative Beck. Beck will perform selections from his just-released album, "The Information," which is already racking up high praise. Entertainment Weekly called the record "A sonic tour de forcelike 'Dark Side of the Moon' or 'OK Computer'it earns those comparisons." Always re-inventing the idea of what a recording can be, Beck has released this album with no art, but includes stickers for consumers to make their own record cover and has included a DVD of homemade videos for each track. Hailed by Wired magazine in a recent cover story on the future of music as "sharp and spontaneous," Beck's latest "may well be [his] masterpiece" (Hits Magazine).

"Saturday Night Live," which premiered on October 11, 1975, is from SNL Studios in association with Broadway Video. The creator and executive producer is Lorne Michaels. Steve Higgins produces. Marci Klein and Mike Shoemaker are producers. Head writers are Seth Meyers, Paula Pell and Andrew Steele. Don Roy King directs.

Two roles I'd cast her in...1. First as a Night Elf in World of Warcraft. Her and Christie Clark of Days of Our Lives, just have these elfen lookin' faces. Of course Christie is no where near as slammin' as Miss Pressly, which you'd have to be, if you wanted a faithful NE chick.2. Now, I've never seen her in a actual dramatic role, so I might be jumpin' to conclusions here, but she'd make a great Rogue in a X-men reboot. Southern, sassy, body to kill for, what else could you want? It's still hard to believe, as hot as she is, she was outdone by Brittany Daniels in Joe Dirt. That scene of Brit getting of the horse?D-A-N-G.

They buthcered that bitch so badly from the beginning, I'm sure I'm not the only one that hopes someone, someday does justice to the property that coulda been as bi, if not bigger than Star Trek. They could totally do a faithful X-men tv show (CYCLOPS), that delved into other characters lives besides a certain overrated Canadian with bad hair. There would be an audience for it (as witnessed by the success of Heroes) but Fox doesn't have the balls to try something like that.Yes, I know it's not a realistic idea for at least 12-15yrs or so, but dammit, a guy can dream can't he?Imagine a series that delved into Rogues lovelife, a real one, with Remy. Imagine the tragic saga of Colossus. Imagine Cyclops and Sabretooth not being neutered for no damn reason. I can imagine, and I will keep on imagining until the day I die, or the day Marvel can get the franchise away from Rothman.DAMN YOU ROTHMAN!!!

    The show has improved!

    by jimmylonewolf

I'm impressed. It was hard to tell last week, but this show has indeed improved this season. I don't think we'll have to watch anything as dreadful as last season's Antonio Banderas episode (where Banderas actually added more than the cast). There was some REALLY great stuff on this episode. I was a bit hard on last week's episode but the problems I had are mostly gone and the writing has improved quite a bit. There were still some problems; the cold opening was pretty terrible (is it me or is Darrel Hammond REALLY phoning it in lately, that Hastert impression felt utterly inert) and the "Jon Bovi" skit might have been the worst so far this season, but every other sketch was a winner, and a few of them were nearly perfect except for their abrupt endings. Good idea, better execution. You know, I like this CAST better than the Shannon/Oteri/Kattan/Fallon cast, and its good to see the writers finally starting to come up with great IDEA-driven sketches. There was less politics this week, and the political humor they DID use (CU excepted) was brilliant. Weekend Update was actually funny (!) and I am continually amazed by Bill Hader. While I would have rather seen a longer Cider sketch than that goofy interlude with the 1982 jogger, the "idea" behind the jogger sketch is definitely in the right direction, and the Cider sketch itself was really good. Two of the three New York Stories were great (Armisen's Lou Reed was a little weak, everything else was A+), especially Yoko Ono! Nancy Grace was another instant classic; well-written, well-executed, and really gave Amy a chance to shine. I hope it stays this biting if it recurs. I was surprised how much I like this cast...even Kenan Thompson has been making me laugh. The Principle's Office sketch was excellent and truthful. One thing they may want to do in the future (because I think this cast can handle it) is try to do a "poignant" sketch...one that is touching rather than funny. It might be just what the show needs and they got awfully close to that tonight. I can't recall one of these in years. Oh, one more thing, Will Forte is the go-to guy for impersonations of southern rednecks...lets hope the writers remember that!! Everyone had a chance to shine this episode, and thats how it should be...keep it up SNL>>>>>>>>>>>>

I get the feeling that people on this board will just hate it no matter what. Not even sure why you still watch it considering how much hatred you have for it. I for one found the Bon Jovi skit to be pretty funny, maybe not the best of all time, but it managed to get a few laughs out of me. You guys take this show WAY too seriously.

I always felt Fey and Poehler were smug, self satisfied and overselling every single joke... tonight (for the most part) Poehler let the writing and characters bring the humor instead of mugging like she did with Kim Jong Il.

On Studio 60, Mathew Perry is asked why a joke worked in read through but not dress rehearsal (the joke involves asking someone to pass the butter). He says "In dress you asked for the laugh, in read through you asked for the butter". It's one of the best pieces of comedy advice I have ever heard.

And, I don't know if it's because she was hot, or if it's because I'm not too critical this weekend (just look at my praise for last night's SNL), but she was pretty damn good.I'd like to see her on the list of replacements for Roger, if he's not able to return. We need a good female critic, and I'm sorry but Leonard Maltin's co-host from that show he had a few years back was terrible.Well, actually, that show just plain sucked, so that may have had something to do with her coming across as terrible.

Quatto references have already been done in at least three shows.
The South Park Aspen Time Share episode episode, Venture Brothers and Metalocalypse. Comedy writers need to stop cannibalizing each others' ideas. Why not some other Total Recall reference, like throwing an old lady's head at somebody, which then says "get ready for a big suprise" and explodes. That would be pretty damn funny.

"no one is watching him" *** Not true; his ratings are on the rise. His special commentaries are now being flagged by tons of progressive websites and the word is spreading: he is putting his neck on the line in the tradition of Murrow. While I find Colbert amusing (most times), I don't see how anyone can really take him or the Daily Show that seriously when it comes to serious news matters. Sure, there is a place for satire and I'm all for it. I'd like to see Stewart do some hard-core investigative reporting or try getting in someone's face without fidgeting or resorting to nervous jokes. I guess it's just a preference in tone that I find more appropriate. Cheers.

I don't like how this site stereotypes its fans...apparently, we only watch Ebert and Roeper if Kevin Smith is on the show.
Also, is it me or has this site REALLY been skimping on movie reviews.
