Cool News
Rest In Peace Tamara Dobson (aka Cleopatra Jones)
Hey folks. Quint here. Tamara Dobson was a very popular actress during the big blaxploitation craze of the '70s. She didn't make quite as big a splash, or quite as many films, as someone like Pam Grier, but she found herself as the leading lady in the running CLEOPATRA JONES series. The first film she fought back against an evil drug lord Shelley Winters and the second, CLEOPATRA JONES AND THE CASINO OF GOLD, she has to beat down Stella Stevens' lesbian underground leader, The Dragon Lady.
While she didn't appear in many films, she did show up again in the obscure Redd Foxx comedy, NORMAN, IS THAT YOU? and the WIP exploitation classic CHAINED HEAT. Sci-Fi fans might recognize her from a guest appearance she made on BUCK ROGERS IN THE 25TH CENTURY.
She died at the young age of 59 of complications from pneumonia and multiple sclerosis on Monday. My thoughts go out to her friends, family and fans.

some people were big fans of Ms. Dobson and it was most definitely worth a mention, LOSER!
-
on this site is based on recency, not importance. are you retarded? theres plenty of transformers coverage on this site and fantastic four 2 will suck just like the first one. blaxploitation is what "cool" WAS back in the 70's and certainly has a place in cinema today (tarantino, snakes on a plane, etc.). the death of this woman at least deserves a short blurb like this one.
-
Alot of us geeks are very fond of B-movie and exploitation actors so it does matter!
-
...I thought of Kentucky Fried Movie and that awesome "Cleopatra Schwartz" parody. You'll be missed, Ms. Dobson. Rest in Peace.
-
I must have missed that. RIP by the way.
-
One of my fondest memories of being 14 - a double bill pf Cleopatra Jones & Enter The Dragon at the old Palladium cinema. Thanks for the memories.
-
Noooooooooooo!

This is a site for movie fans. Just because you discovered it while trolling for high res close up pics of Optimus Prime's crotch or Anakin's deleted nude scene in episode 1 doesn't mean someone who contributed more to cinema history than you and your blockbuster rewards card ever could deserve a nod when she dies. When you die we'll totally ignore it. How's that? Does that dry your huggies you fucking bloated gasbag? How about this: the biggest contribution Greece has ever made to the world is coining anal sex with their own national identity. Eg: Everyone with a heartbeat and a quarter has greeked your mom. Or: Your dad likes to drug you and greek you while you sleep. Thanks for coming out, we have a lovely parting gift for you and a copy of STFU: the home game.
-
You gotta be a pretty sick moron to bitch in someone's death notice. But, you are correct about one thing. This isn't Cool News, it's sad new. Rest in Peace.
-
Fucking idiot. You're the worst kind of geek.
-
...dammit. I couldn't resist.
-
Is this your feeble stab at trolling? Usually I don't let this/your kind of bullshit bother me, but you should try and exercise a little restraint and show a little respect. Hopefully you'll look back at your posts and feel ashamed. Peace.
-
Time to check out the movies once more.
-
Where do I subscribe?
-
his friend shove that ASSHAMMER a bit too far in and dies, who will notice and who will care? that's right. NO ONE!!!
-
As a teen in the 70s, I only got to see these flicks on the late, late show, when my parents were asleep. They were cool, and she was bad-ass. Thanks for the notice.
-
God bless her soul.

Just because what thegreekhammer has to say is kind of cold doesn't mean it isn't true. This place has become "Ain't it trivial" instead of Ain't it Cool. You know, just because it's in a movie doesn't mean it's cool. In fact that doesn't even mean it matters. "Cleopatra Jones" was meaningless drivel when it was new. Now it's meaningless drivel with thirty years of mold on it. Her death at such an early age is a shame but "the industry" hasn't lost shit here.
-
Granted, the majority of tweeners in here don't know their ass from their elbow. But, when I see comments like yours, I realize just how little you retards know about film history, and the significance of contributions, however insigificant they may appear to the uneducated.
-
I'm going to NetFlix Ms. Dobson right now. As for you haters, these memorial posts are a VITAL PART of what makes AICN the best... I will NEVER FORGET Harry's awesome CHARLES BRONSON memorial post back in '03... really a work of art and did the great man justice... and I say this as a superfan who has more Bronson memorabilia than most of you haters probably have hairs on your nutsacks... after years of reading AICN through all its ups and downs, that post really let me know I was still in the RIGHT PLACE. If you don't like memorial posts, you're likely in the WRONG PLACE and should go eat shit 'n' die.
Haha, I remember I was once banned many years back and lost a great long-term UserID just 'cause I went on the talkback about the space shuttle tragedy and said I didn't care and it wasn't movie-related. -
got 2 words for you ya ignorant father-felcher. Kill... Bill... And in answer to TheGreekHammer (and anyone else who names themselves after a homosexual sex act - scheesh!) Cleopatra Jones will forever be cool, a dictionary definition of cool. Transformers? That was cool to a bunch of 10 year old kids back in the 80's. No MOTHER-FUCKING COMPARISON. Not a matter of opinion, just observation. I remember seeing Cleopatra Jones in a double bill as well, but with Black Belt Jones at the local Art Cinema. Second most amount of fun I've ever had in a theatre. The first was in the same place seeing Bad Taste for the first time, also in a double bill. With Reefer Madness. I mean... Goddamn! Starting to understand the meaning of cool yet robot-boys? Tamara Dobson - RIP, you sexy kitty-kat.
-
...She was rubbish anyway. Now if Bruce Willis or Patrick Stewart had died, THAT would have been cool news. Greeekhammer and Hervoyel, you are heartless cunts to diss someone on their fucking OBITUARY.
-
There's nothing like it. It's blaxploitation meets James Bond. So colorful, with hilarious Shelly Winters and all the great dialogue by Max Julien (The Mack himself!). Tamara Dobson is amazing in the movie, a glamorous amazon asskicker. She's on her own plane. Sorry she had to go so young. Rest in peace.

Well, are you gonna fucking decide what's News? I can imagine your first headline: FRIENDLESS GREEEKHAMMER MASTURBATES FURIOUSLY WHILE BEMOANING HIS SAD, LONELY EXISTENCE!
Hey, I'm not knocking it. I'd read that article! But in the meantime, I'd rather read news, and a brief tribute, to the entertainers that film-lovers know and love. Often it serves a real purpose in reminding us of performances we enjoyed, and movies that deserve another viewing. If you can't understand that, then... Congratulations! You're a joyless cunt! Enjoy your brief, soul-crushing career as a mid-level studio suit! Now if there's one thing this site could use less of, it's coverage of the latest Star Wars DVD. Seriously, if you've ever spend a dollar on anything with the words 'Phantom', 'Clones', 'Sith', or 'Special Edition', you're a fucking nitwit. Which conveniently makes George 'Turkey Gizzard' Lucas the King of the Fucking Nitwits. -

this site is a bit fucked. I promise, I only posted this once. PS.... AICN: In the future, you might want to note that it's 'Rest in Peace'. Might explain some of the disrespect around here. Cheers.

Ever tried NOT BEING A FUCKING ASSHOLE? Seriously bud, it's a fucking OBITUARY. If you don't care about the person who JUST DIED that's fine, but go somewhere else for your complaints. This is an actress we care about and you're concerned about finding new jerkoff material of the girl from the fucking "New Flipper" show. And then you are actually trying to convince us that The Ain't It Cool News would be better if it was catered to morons who don't know what CLEOPATRA JONES is but actually give a shit about the fucking FANTASTIC FOUR? Bitch, are you for real? Fuck you and your whole retard generation for this bullshit. Take your transformables cars, shove em up your ass and THEN transform them into robots. And then go do some sit ups. Either that or apologize and go watch CLEOPATRA JONES and learn something. If you do this then I will be respectful in YOUR obituary. The views expressed in this talkback do not necessarily represent the views of The Ain't It Cool News, but only the views of human beings with the common courtesy not to whine about spiderman pictures where others are mourning the death of a beloved actress.

i love all the 20th century foxes (from 1920's to 1980's), discarding the 1990's -- be the movie of any grade...
i think with women involved (like,
just screaming, or beating up bad guys, with boobs jiggling) it's possible to make watchable B-movies, in the first place.
and even more to the point: women were more natural, feminine and beautiful decades ago, and they got passion and soul that really showed - even in those who weren't great or even good (actingwise).
hail to the scream queens and exploitation chicks! -

Ann Richards gets a memorial write-up on AICN; Sven Nykvist gets jack. It's your site, you decide who gets a notice and who doesn't. Nevertheless, I would encourage respect in an obit talkback regardless.
-
Though about half her age, it doesn't matter. She is an early memory of mine. And Geekhammer...when the 'voice' of your favorite cartoon character dies and you whine...bite me. Seriously. Bite me. When you do, I will pound you into the dirt. I'll face you on my worst day as I'm having a heart attack, as the cancer sets in and still whoop you're ass. Vern, you get sloppy seconds. Sorry about that, but you will. But I'll allow you to wear a Cleopatra Jones mask and tee-shirt when you do. And Sven Nykvist...great frickin' actor! But never a pop-culture icon. Love the guy. Again, great actor. But this site is basically pop-culture oriented.
-
simple post. Just show a little respect huh? Don't flame for the sake of flaming please.

I think some people are missing the point of the site. yes it is about reporting stuff on current movies but its also and this is how i always saw it, a celebration of films that never really get celebrated by the mainstream.
Films that aren't considered high brow or just unimportant because the subject matter is of no intrest to critics or that the film hasn't aged well compared to the newer blockbusters. Without these films however there wouldn't be any blockbusters. In fact without films such as Mad Love with Colin clive,Crimson Pirate with Burt, The Blaxpolitation movies, hong kong cinema like A Better Tommorow, i realy doubt you would have gotten half the films people enjoy today like Hostel,Kill Bill,POTC,and dare i say it Transformers.
Without those B movies like Thing from another world and the universal monster movies there be no Speilberg or Lucas, whatever your opinion of them pratically invented the movie blockbuster which has led to stuff like the upcoming Transformers. You take those two away and there be no bay and no TF. Think about that when you disrespectfully trashtalk someone who isn't here to defend themselves.
The cool represents that in cinema of the past and where its going for the future. In a lot of cases these old movies seem to be better than their newer counterparts no matter how ridiculous the title.
The cool to me represents films like the Blackboard jungle to Cleopatra Jones and the fact that they won't be forgotten because there is a geniune passion for the type of genres in films that a lot of people overlook.
Your opinion GH is your opinion but it also shows what type of person you are that you can disrespect an obituary no matter if you liked them or not. if you couldn't care less of that person than you shouldn't have bothered writing in. It indicates that your parents didn't give you any lessons in values and respect. So enjoy your TF it doesn't look great anyway but enjoy it and remember that if it wasn't for films such as what i mentioned you wouldn't be enjoying the film stuff you like now. -
Hey Greekhammer, show some f'in class! I never watched any of the CJ films, or even blaxspoitation films; except everyone's favorites- Blackula and Die Blackula Die. But I can appreciate her contribution and that she made people happy with her work.
Hey Hervoyel, yes, it might seem 'trivial' to you. But you know what, you gave forgotten one of the cannon rules for a geek. Being a geek means you know and appreciate the trivial, because it is what's important- and that's what separates a geek from someone who just merely likes a film, show or a book.
Some people (not you Hervoyel, but GH and others like him) have to grow the fuck up. I know this is just a silly talkback, but it really does indicate what kind of person you are (at least anonymously). -
For that last post, you get something many aspire to, but few get. My respect.
-
http://tinyurl.com/kv6x6 http://tinyurl.com/fyvrl http://tinyurl.com/hczd3 This woman had a strong flex.Respect.Even Han Solo (77 Original ;>) would've liked that gun on the last pic.Certian names should of been banned within the hour, thats a bit slack,I hope any family members of hers don't read this before the AICN tech team do the the right thing..I wish the relevent/irrelevent talkback names 10 miles of bad road.
-
Well said, Mr. Vern. However, speaking of obituaries, you and Mr. Movieplex are speaking of a site that used to exist. Harry's love of film is famous and evident in things like the travelling roadshow, but when does he even write anymore? (And sadly, when he does jump on the hype train lately, it often turns out to be a shitwagon (e.g., King Kong). Who will educate the TV babies?
-
GH, if you had previously made a point of posting in other talkbacks which you consider trivial, while simultaneously berating AICN for not reporting what you consider to be "cool news", you might have not only had a point but also rallied a fair amount of sympathy from others. As it is, you chose an obit for your attack, thus demonstrating not only a lack of class and tact, but the presence of a streak of cruelty, callousness and stupidity. You are, in short, a complete shit.
-
...some nobody called Greeekhammer (how many fuckin E's to you need anyway?) and not about the untimely demise of a beautiful and talented actress.
-
Attention. Let's move on.
-
She was GREAT in that role as well as her role as dynomites sister in good times.
-
As if there aren't a million other sites to get the "latest and greatest" on the next lame sequel to FF, or extol the virtues of a star (definitely not an actor) like Jessica Alba. *Cool* is a lot of things, past and present and future, not just the pap that the studios want us to hear so we're lining up for their next feebfest...
-
As we speak, the Theme From Cleopatra Jones is sitting in my car's CD deck, and the DVD is primed and ready for viewing for the umpteenth time. Ms. Dobson's character is an Icon of Black Cinema and, despite what Geekhammer The 12 Year Old Troll thinks, her contribution to film is more than worthy to be celebrated here at AICN. R.I.P. Cleo!
-
And by the way, Greekhammer's views are not shared by the rest of us Greeks-- jackinitraw, your comment on Greeks was NOT appreciated, remember, we gave the world Lesbians too.
-
brought down that jive turkey Julius Caesar! KA POW!
-
Was a very successful movie Vern loved by millions...How many people have even heard of Cleopatra Jones...and Jessica Alba is just the girl grom the new flipper?...best check your pulse there brokeback. The so called movie snobs on this site try to crap on every Fox movie and spit in the face of their own fans.Since when did Blaxploitation movies become anything but racist drivel. If racism is cool to you people then I understand more of the Xmen hate here.
-
Shut the fuck up. We supposed movie snobs were merely paying respect to the memory of Tamara Dobson, not shitting on The Fantastic Four. I think Vern was trying to explain to that immature Greekhammer to exercise a little tact and respect...So don't go trivializing the passing of Ms. Dobson because you're not a fan of 70's Black Cinema. How about venturing out of the protective womb of the suburbs and gain little perspective and stop worshipping at the alter Jessica Alba (which I have nothing against), but this is an obituary not a pissing match about who's more relevant. Btw, over 90% of that racist drivel was produced by Hollywood. (Fox included).
-
Where's the "Eduardo Mignogna Memorial Story & Talkback"? Surely some of you guys have the soundtrack to "Caso Matias" sitting in your car right now. No doubt many of you fondly recall the summer of 1975 when you first laid eyes on "La Raulito en libertado" and cinema as the world knows it was changed forever.
-
you just ripped that poor troll 5 new assholes, and I hope he gets diarrhea out them all...I'll admit I didn't know this woman from Eve, but shitting on someone's obituary is just fucking stupid...thanks to Vern for whipping the bitch with his silver tongue...
-
even as you all complain about talkback glitches, biased reviews, and whatever else, please remember this...the creators/writers/reviewers of this website still read every talkback, every comment, and truly engage the ideas here and take all of your opinions to heart. this is the only site that still listens to all of you...so stop your bitching, PLEASE...when you do nothing but whine, it hurts those of us that value AICN as the only major site left that can even hear your voices..."Learn to accept in silence the minor aggravations, cultivate the gift of taciturnity, and consume your own smoke with an extra draft of hard work, so that those about you may not be annoyed with the dust and soot of your complaints." ~William Osler
-
the one with shelley winters in it. that's some funny ass shit.
"hey bitch! you pissin' me off now!!" -
Tamara Dobson, one of my fondest memories of my childhood. Granted I did not get to see it when originally released since I was too young, but I did see it a a teen many of times and TD and Cleopatra Jones is one of my fondest cinema memories. I must not be the only one, as it was reference in movies such as I'm Gonna Git U Succa, Body Shots, Year of the Dragon and I would think most famously Austin Powers: Goldmember. I mean who knows what other movies. To bad she wasn't in a whole lot of films, I heard she had a bad experieince on one films and decided that was it, and I would think that she probably got typecast too back then. You will be missed by this fan.
-
That's Tamara Dobson, not Jones. If you want your apology to seem genuine, at least have the decency to get her name right.
-
...don't try to win, or steer the conversation in your favor. Your original post WAS disrespectful, by any interpretation. Even your apology is full of hatred. desecrate her corpse? Do you have to use those terms to save face? That's like telling someone you're sorry they're an asshole.
A proper apology consists of leaving yourself vulnerable enough to recieve the grace of someone's forgiveness; that's what an apology is, not a way for you to assert how right you are. The fact that you are disrespecting someone on their obituary says more than enough about your behavior, and if you can't figure out WHY that's unacceptable to anyone you are trying to convince of anything, like what's cool or not, then explaining it to you is meaningless. Lots of us out there know what's cool, and if you're a fan, act like a man, not like a maniac (unless you're in a grainy 70's horror flick...but, oh, wait, i guess the 70's aren't cool enough for you).
Be man enough to apologize, and recognize that you are at someone's obituary. Imagine this was for someone YOU loved and cared for, and how your words would sound to THEM. Would you talk that way at your mother's funeral? Because I wouldn't, even if she deseerved it.
Apologize like an adult, and show us how to act like resposible, respectful adults, and we'll extend the same courtesy to you.
Take care, friend. -
I'll always remember your face, your name, and your character Cleopatra Jones. You died far too young, but you're in a better place now. R.I.P. Tamara Dobson.
