The First 300 Trailer Is Online Now... And It Will Make Grown Men Weep!!

Published at:  Oct 05, 2006 3:08:05 PM CDT

Hey, everyone. “Moriarty” here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

Holy shit. It was one thing to sit in an editing room with Zack Snyder and look at rough footage for this film as well as FX tests of what he hoped to accomplish.

It’s another thing altogether to actually see those things accomplished and then some. Snyder looks to have hit it out of the ballpark with his second film, and I am personally frothing with an intense need to see this. Now. Today.

Can’t. Wait.

And for those who want to say, “But what about that trailer that was all over the place recently? Isn’t that the first trailer?” Nope. That was the Comic-Con presentation, and it was never meant to serve as a trailer for the film. This is what you’ll see in theaters, presumably attached to THE DEPARTED this weekend.

Sweeeeeeeeeet.

Thanks to all 40 or so of you who sent this one in!!

The only complaint I have is with the wolf, very poor cgi, but I love that they gave it a fantasy look, like the comics.
And those who complain about historical accuracy; if you are so fond of greek fucking history, go watch Alexander. See what accuracy did to the battle of Gaugamela. I saw it five times on dvd and yeah it was pretty much as i read about it, but for those who don´t have a clue, they saw only dust and more dust.

I have read this awesome book and agree that it is better storyline wise and charachter wise is deeper than 300 but in a totally different vein sort of like gladiator but on a more massive scale with lotr type battles but hand-to-hand brutality not charging on horseback.two totally different movies but i would rather have seen gates of fire made.

Oh Please Let it Be March Soon

    by mr. winston

This has been my most anticipated film since they started really seriously talking about doing it five years ago. There will be blood and swords and ancient Spartans and arrows that blot out the sun and ohmyeverlovinggod even a fucking rhino rampaging. I will be doing everything in my very meager power to get into the earliest screening possible. For those of you that haven't read the graphic novel...read it. Please. And for those of you wishing for GATES OF FIRE...I think you'll like this on a much different level. Ever since I studied it in college, the Battle of Thermopylae has been my favorite historical event. I'm more than OK with a film that chooses to bastardize is in the way it appears it's been bastardized. And I haven't been this excited for a trailer since GLADIATOR.

Why can't they just tell the true story?

    by photoman

The battle of Thermopylae was real. It's a real story. In 480 BC an alliance of Greek city-states fought the invading Persian army in the mountain pass, Thermopylae. Vastly outnumbered, the Greeks held back the enemy in one of the most famous last stands of history. A small force led by king Leonidas of Sparta blocked the only road through which the massive army of Xerxes could pass. After several days of confrontation the Persians attacked, but were defeated by heavy losses, disproportionate to those of the Greeks. This continued on the second day but on the third day of the battle a local resident betrayed the Greeks, revealing a mountain path that led behind the Greek lines. With the rest of the army dismissed, King Leonidas stayed behind with his bodyguard of 300 Spartans and the 700 man Thespian army even though they knew it meant their deaths, to allow the rest of the army to escape. I'm sure the movie will show all this, but why in the comic book style? So many people will see it and think "ah, it's all made up, no way could just 1,000 men (not just 300...there were 300 Spartans, but they also had help) do that against so many." Just tell the story in a straight way, why does everything have to be stylized now? Oh, right, the 3 minute short attention span A.D.D. kids of today won't go see it. It's got to have the hip-hop/metal soundtrack too.

Every line in the trailer was wildly over-acted. I hope the movie won't be like that. It also has that SKY CAPTAIN 'fake' look to it; it's an odd look for a historical/mythological epic. Still, like I said the visuals seem stunning, but I hope the script is just as great.

Frank Miller has never said his work of art is historically accurate. It is his intepretation of the event. The 300 are strength, will and character personified. It is a work of fiction based on a real event. Consider me excited.

To all the rest who over-analyze, hyper-criticize and make even the Architect's Speech from Matrix Reloaded sound coherent and interesting, i say this: GIVE IT A BRAKE for goodness (or evil's) sake! Why can't you just wait until you see the movie, immerse yourselves to it, filter it according to your epxeriences, beliefs, and then state what you think based on the actual film? I am a movie-fan for over 25 years and though i grew up with Sci-fi and fantasy i am willing to give each and every movie from every gender a fair chance to astound me, or make me think about certain aspects of our lives, or just plain entertain me. Heck, i can give credits to the director even if his movie sucks, just for the effort. It's called good-will. The world has enough mean-hearted critics our there..I am tired of reading on every movie-fan site the responses just from a 1 min teaser..I am a Greek and the 1st time i saw the earlier teaser, it brought tears to my eyes. I felt pride for my ancestors, yes, but if the movie proves to be a flop, i won't hesitate to say it.

No, there wasn't. Do your research. Sappho was merely a female poet from the island of Lesbos and she happened to often write about girls she was fond of. That's where the word "lesbian" comes from. There never was an island full of muff-diving women, at least not in actual history.

    by orbots commander

If the story for 300 is fantastic then great, but visuals aren't going to save a turd of a screenplay no matter how cool a movie looks. Like somebody said, that March doesn't exactly inspire confidence. September, February and March are when studios dump most of their garbage stuff. If the studio felt ultra confident about 300, it would have a holidays or Summer release date.

This isn't like Sin City where the contrast and black and white stuff enhanced the story and honored it's past. This appeared to be "Sky Captain" all over again. The whole thing shot in front of a bluescreen, very little 'real' about it. It's cool to watch in the same way the cutscenes from God of War are. Neat for a while, but after about a minute the style becomes grating, and distracting. I thought yesterday's Ghost Rider trailer was far better.

All right, already, you've read one book not part of a fantasy series and it was "Gates of Fire," we're so fuckin impressed, shaddap about it already--this is something else. And yes, shockingly, it is CGI heavy or whatever and is in the Hollywood gay male ideal mode of cut men with bare chests, we get it, we get it! Reading post after post of "I'm not seeing this" only convinces us you're a closet case who will buy the DVD to wank in secret. You don't want to see it, don't like the trailer? Who fuckin cares! Homophobia

    by das uberman!

Weren't the sandals-and-swords movies of the 60s universally considered homoerotic or at least a bit campy? These latest movies (Gladiator) look like the same thing with the slick production values and neofascist values, plus a tendency to take themselves way too seriously.

All that said, I'm a hetero who's not a bit homophobic, and I believe in modern democratic systems but love a good us against the world blood bath. So, despite the scary politics (simply, Spartans are bad role models) I can't wait to see this one.

    by batutta

...so I'll reserve judgement. The acting looks rather overheated...My hunch is this won't make much money, as the primary audience for this seems to be young men, who these days seem to be either sitting behind a joystick or playing with their own while surfing the net for porn.

I don't know. I didn't like the Dawn of the Dead remake, but I will admit the opening of the film was pretty good. The director was just complete butterfingers when he had to deal with simple things like character motivation. I'm cautiously optimistic about this. The biggest hurdle is that without some dark humour Frank Miller's exaggerated machismo can end up making an audience laugh at the work rather than laugh with it. If I remember, 300 isn't filled with chuckles.

    by floydtheater07

Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate some cool looking CGI battles, but honestly, can someone provide me with a justification for all of the praise that this trailer is getting?

    It looked absolutely horrendous.

Terrible overacting, visuals that almost made me literally laugh out loud (sorry, but they were over-the-top and obviously compensating for what may eventually be a lack of engaging characters), and an overall "extended music video" feel. I have watched it a few times now and I cannot begin to understand what one could see in that.

If this is the guy who will be handling "Watchmen", I am severely worried. He seems to be making films that are all style and no substance, and let's face it, "Watchmen" is all substance. Granted, I could be wrong about "300", seeing as no one has seen the actual film, but if that trailer is any representation of the movie's true nature, it will be an embarassment to the art of film.

You are having a laugh... If ther's one thing that can make or break a good trailer it's the music used to help set the tone and this was perfect; and I love it when Nine Inch Nails tunes are used anywhere! He took extreme care - too much care - to make sure that he patiently explained each element of Alexander's strategy in the battle. It made it very History-Channel-y, and sucked the energy out of it - particularly if you already knew the story of how Alexander won the battle. Your average battle replay from Rome: Total War is more engaging.

Gladiator had a lot going for it. Known director, first weekend of May, first big budget sword and shield movie in a long ass time, it was good though overrated. 300 comes out in March, and who the hell is this director? And there's been a bunch of these types of movies since Gladiator, many disappointing. Even if it looks different, people will feel burned by Alexander, Troy, the wrong version of Kingdom of Heaven, King Arthur, etc.

The material for 300 calls for a sweeping orchestral score. I like Nine Inch Nails and Reznor, but marrying that music to a story about ancient Sparta is a bit odd.
It'll get younger people excited but forget about a general audience over 40. The way to go is with alternate trailers, one that plays better for an older crowd.

Apart from the fact that every line in the trailer is delivered like 'Let's get rrrready to RRRRRUMBLE!!!'; don't you 'straight' boys get that ever since fucking Kirk Douglas in Spartacus, ever since Steve Reeves, ever since the 80's gun-totin' bicep-ridden faggotry of Schwartzenegger et al, that when heterosexual men want to fuck other heterosexual men, they fight. This whole movie looks oiled and it's simply dripping with spunk.

That lemon 'Alexander' was actually one of the LEAST gay of these epics because it didn't really have the 'UGH, my blood-brother, let us clasp sinewy arms in muscular kinship before we, UGH, ride each other, I mean; our mighty straining steeds into battle together to die in honor in a huge ejaculation of squirting blood and gore!!'

Wake up; this shit is HOMOSEXUAL. Even queerer than Troy (Holy shit was Brad Pitt's womanizing unconvincing in that!) Which is a good thing; excapet that you silly boys seeem unable to grasp it. you get literally orgasmic about this shit and you don't even seem to know why!

    by ubersnarf

I was excited after seeing the video diaries but if the movie is going to be an overwrought music video like the trailer, pass! I guess I'm just one of those people who's still shallow enough to want to see acting in a movie. And for those people calling this gay - err, if it was 'gay' there would be an emphasis on the emotionality of the people, and not just testosteronal shouting. Looks pretty straight guy to me. I think I'll wait the two months for Spidey to get my comic fix!

It's more than just a simple war movie with the million man CG army. 300 is meant to have a dream like quality to it. Don't go saying, oh the Special effects look fake. They're not going for realism. They're going for a certain look. A stylish look. artful look. something new. something different and God damn it! I appreciate that!

What's with all the gay bashing?

    by rbatty024

Who cares if it's gay or straight? (in Greece the delineation wasn't so strict). If you're comfortable with your heterosexuality you should be able to see a guy with his shirt off and not all of a sudden think homosexual thoughts. If you do, then you're probably at least part gay, and there's nothing wrong with that. Hell, the film may even have a homosexual subtext, and if it's handled right then who cares? Gay or straight a good movie is a good movie (not that I think this will be a good movie).

    by rbatty024

that Sci-Fi and fantasy have been on the forefront of the homosexual fronteer. C3PO and R2D2 are the only gay robot couple in films, and no one has had the balls to put another gay robot couple in another movie. LOTR had, to my knowledge, the first little person gay lovefest, but it's a real shame they chose not to use real little people. Gay little people and robots have a long way to go before they get the screen time they deserve.

Gay bashing and gayness in Sparta

    by masterkenobi

The first reason why people hated Alexander, was because he was uber gay, cried all the time, liked ass, and was a worse pain in the ass (shit I used that word again) than Anakin in episode 2. I called someone gay, cause he said he liked "Dawson's nudie scenes" when he actually meant he liked Alex´ ass.
And to you who say spartans were gay; no they were not officially homosexual. Sure there might have been one or two closet gays like everywere else, but their men were heterosexual, as in they made love to women, they even married at an early age. They were the true heroes of antiquity, unlike greeks with their Akilles and Alexanders. Am i bashing gays? No I just admire real men, i want have real heroes I can identify with. If you who saw the comic con footage or the leaked promo trailer wondered why a mighty warrior like Leonidas, looked at his wife Gorgo for advice before he kicked down that messanger; it is because the women in Sparta had more power than anywere else in the ancient world. Did that make the men weak? Of course not, it made them strong enough to recognize women as equal, and treat them with respect. That´s what i like about the spartans. They were more democratic than the greeks. They had some cruel and very unlikable habits too, but that´s another story. To all those who bitch about historical accuracy, see this:

    http://elysiumgates.com/~helena/Women.html

Seems to me that Frank Miller made his homework before he wrote 300. The over the top fantastical elements, like rhinos charging into battle, will just make it so much cooler than most "historical epics", and will do for the history of the ancient world more than Gladiator, Alexander and Troy did together.

    More about sparta

    by masterkenobi

Apologize for the address above. The page won´t opnen now, so here it is:

The freedom and greater respect for Spartan women began at birth with laws that required female infants and children to be given the same care and food as their brothers—in contrast to other Greek cities, where girls were frequently given less and lower-quality food. Like their brothers, Spartan girls were expected or required to attend the public school, although for a shorter period of time than the boys. At school they were allowed and encouraged to engage in sports. (And it was, incidentally, a Spartan who became the first woman to ever have an Olympic victory—by entering a chariot at the races.)

When girls reached sexual maturity they were not rushed—as were their sisters throughout the rest of the contemporary world—into marriage and childbed. On the contrary, the Spartan laws explicitly advocated marrying girls only after they had reached an age to "enjoy sex." The reasoning was simple: for young girls not yet psychologically ready for sexual intimacy, sex was an "act of violence." Nor were Spartan girls married to much older men as was usual in other Greek cities. It is estimated that most Spartan wives were only 4 to 5 years younger than their husbands.

With their husbands confined to barracks and on active service until the age of 31 and frequently called up for campaigns or engaged in political and civic duties thereafter, it was left to Sparta's matrons to run the estates. These meant that Spartan wives controlled the family wealth—and in effect the entire Spartan agricultural economy. A Spartan citizen was dependent on his wife's efficiency to pay his "dues" to his dining club. This economic power is in particularly sharp contrast to cities such as Athens, where it was illegal for a woman to control more money than she needed to buy a bushel of grain. What was more, Spartan women could inherit and so transfer wealth. Athenian women, by contrast, were never heiresses; all property passed to the next male kinsman, who might at most be required to marry the heiress in order to claim the inheritance. Economic power has always had the concomitant effect of increasing status. This is clearly evidenced by contemporary descriptions of Spartan women. They were "notorious" for having opinions ("even on political matters!") and—what was clearly worse from the perspective of other Greek men—"their husbands listened to them." Aristotle claimed that Spartan men were "ruled by their wives"—and cited the freedom of Spartan women as one of two reasons why the Spartan Constitution was reprehensible.

In a frequently quoted incident, the wife of King Leonidas was allegedly asked why Spartan women were the only women in Greece who "ruled" their husbands. Gorgo replied, "because we are the only women who give birth to men." In other words, only men with the self-confidence to accept women as equals were men at all.

Spartan women did not have a voice in the Assembly, nor were they required to spend 40 years in the army.

Last but not least, it is a frequent misconception that Spartan society was also blatantly homosexual. Curiously, no contemporary source and no archaeological evidence supports this widespread assumption. The best ancient source on Sparta, Xenophon, explicitly denies the already common rumors about widespread pederasty. Aristotle noted that the power of women in Sparta was typical of all militaristic and warlike societies without a strong emphasis on male homosexuality—arguing that in Sparta this "positive" moderating factor on the role of women in society was absent. There is no Spartan/Laconian pottery with explicitly homosexual motifs—as there is from Athens and Corinth and other cities. The first recorded heterosexual love poem was written by a Spartan poet for Spartan maidens. The very fact that Spartan men tended to marry young by ancient Greek standards (in their early to mid-twenties) suggests they had less time for the homosexual love affairs that characterized early manhood in the rest of Greece. Certainly the state considered bachelorhood a disgrace, and a citizen who did not marry and produce future citizens enjoyed less status than a man who had fathered children. In no other ancient Greek city were women so well integrated into society. All this speaks against a society in which homosexuality was exceptionally common.

...is there with the sole intention of DECEIVING whoever's clueless enough to think that this movie isn't actually about man-fucking. Really, it's about sweaty men, covered in blood, fucking other men in the ass, with the occasional A2M blowjob thrown in.

That said, I'm there. This trailer looks much better than that Flash trailer we first saw. The colors look paler, and that's already a big plus. Plotwise, there's nothing we should expect from 300 other than an adolescent macho closet-homossexual power fantasy. That's a given, since it's based on a Frank Miller comic. But I'm more than willing to ignore that if this movie works as a coherent, adrenaline-pumped battle adventure, with some cute videogamey visuals.

And why is it that everyone complains about movies being unoriginal and whatnot, then when they're shown something like this, they say "not historically accurate" (it's not trying to be), "looks fake" (looks stylized and dreamlike and BEAUTIFUL), or "gay" (seriously, shut up)? by imscully33

Moriarty, I was at ComicCon--the grainy leaked promo was *not* the footage that was shown there. Some of it was (like Leonidas' childhood, albeit with a gruffer voice over from Wenham than we saw) but the ComicCon footage was a combination of the promo and this official trailer--with alot more sex and gore. The Quicktime trailer is the closest to what Snyder showed there. If you're going to brag about sitting in Zack Snyder's editing room, get your facts a little tighter.

pretty much sir. It is pretty damn clear what you are driving at: You try to convince us how well the Spartans treated their wives to create the impression of a positive society. Your ideal state however (a point you stress about one million times) didn't have any homosexuals. You know, just stay in your dream world of muscular heteros kicking the shit out of each other... we actually know that the people who are most afraid of homosexuals really have a repressed sexuality... I mean, being a hetero (although you do admire "real men" how about that?) why should you even care about what other men are doing in their beds? Why all that hatred? Because, my friend, deep in your heart you are a repressed gay and in fighting against homosexuals you are fighting against the parts of your soul you don't wanna acknowledge. Do you still remember the other guys in high school dating women why you had your dark thoughts about gays? There was a reason for that, face it:

homophobia is gay. And so are you.

    by happyfat73

One thing seems to typify the haters of this trailer (actually two things - but the puerile calls of "gayness" from insecure teenagers are easily ignored).
The haters against this trailer all have an "it must be done this way or it sucks" mentality. Look at the source material - Frank Miller's 300. It's not called Gates of Fire or The Battle of Thermopylae, or Ancient History 101.
It's called 300. Because it's based on Frank Miller's highly stylised picture book, 300. It's a highly stylised film. Don't like stylised? Go watch your home movies.
There's yelling in this trailer. Yep. Good pick up. 2 or 3 shouted lines in a trailer equates to a film full of yelling how?
Anyway this looks freakin' great. If you're sitting at your computer hating on this at the moment - it's your loss. It's just one more negative attitude to make your life miserable.

Darth Bogart and a gay agenda?

    by 900lbgorilla

Yeah Bogart- Darth Kenobi cites historical evidence to support the likely true position that Spartans did not from a societal standpoint condone/favor homosexuality…and you say he’s a closeted fag because he doesn’t drool on his shirt and spout mindless PC mantra… facts be damned. (You probably said the same thing about Homer’s Achilles without realizing that position is not supported in even one sentence in the actual Iliad) Look dude….you’re gay…and we’re all ok with that….really… but just because you want to bump butts with every dude sans a shirt doesn’t mean they necessarily share your homo-erotic fantasies….in fact they probably almost never do (maybe hence the animosity)…anyway, the point is maybe you should back up what you “think” (Note that I use that word loosely) with facts or shut up and go download some more gay porn…it will make you happier, and you’ll avoid looking stupid at the same time…see a win-win!

    by krullboy

of the Spartans now. "War" as we know it today would not be impeded by the media, and all sides in conflicts, good and bad, would strategically destroy the other side. This can not happen now. . .when the Romans defeated the Carthaginians in the Punic Wars, they killed everyone, sacked the city, and poured salt into the soil to prevent agriculture. Total victory. If Israel today could fight like that, there would be a radically different Middle East. China could wipe Taiwan off the map if it chose too, but the media outrage would be unbelievable; same reason why Tianamen Square could not happen now, too much media. I am not advocating wholesale violence, just identifying that we live in a time when the media is as dominant a force on the battlefield as a tank or a commander. Without the restraint of the media, today's military hardware would destroy 100s of thousands. Information/Media is the new weapon.

Good point Krullboy – the Media is a weapon

    by 900lbgorilla

Unfortunately it is a one sided weapon that serves to protect evil nations and restrain good ones - and there is where I disagree with you a bit- I don’t think the media can stop another Tianamen Square just as it is worthless in Stopping a Saddam from throwing people into industrial paper shredders and genocides like Darfur. The reasons for this are numerous: First evil leaders don’t care what some empty suit on a television says, second that leader usually has State control over their own media so wont feel repercussions in their own county for the atrocities they perform, and third most of the media are idiotic appeasers, so will gladly give an evil leader a pass the minute he starts pretending to engage in diplomacy - and this last has been true for the better part of a century, from Stalin and Hitler, to various other Soviet leaders, to Castro, Saddam, and the various self admitted genocidal Middle eastern dictators….the Western media has no spine for any harsh actions if it involves their own governments while it quickly forgives or forgets far worse actions from our enemies. Don’t get me wrong war should never be entered into lightly, but once it’s done, it should be fought to win …. Dragging out conflict for decade after decade with small victories when your enemy would kill everyone if they got the upper hand is just nutty. It is a testament to our extreme cushy lifestyle and overconfidence in the West- this is a product of really not being able to imagine losing the upper hand…hopefully the West never will, because if we do, the price for this strategy will be horrific. I think Churchill has the template that should be followed. It’s very harsh by today’s standards - and by his day’s standards as well (until he was proven right) He was after all decried as a warmonger before he became the Leader of England. If you get the chance, pick up “The Gathering Storm” (Unabridged)– but I recommend it on tape as it’s very long and a bit heavy- but fascinating. As far as I’m concerned this should be required reading for a college history class- Churchill was fond of the phrase “Those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it”. It drove him crazy that Liberals of his era ignored the lessons of dealing with evil dictators that has been taught before the 1930s…. Undoubtedly he’s spinning in his grave over the current blinder-driven mentality as we speak. Sigh…..

Dude, I am not a hater. I understand that this is based on 300. I own a hardcover of 300, and I think its pretty cool. I liked Sin City as well. My point is that we're probably getting only one shot at a movie about hoplites and I wish we were getting something more realistic. If this movie bombs then we're one step closer to not getting any historical epics. Of course that wouldnt be the fault of 300 alone, just another to go along with Troy, Alexander, and Kingdom of Heaven, doing their best to fuck up the chance that Braveheart's VHS and DVD sales and Gladiator's critical acclaim gave us.
And as far as saying that Leonidas only yells in the film, well I can only comment on what they're showing in the trailer and in the sneak peak since that's all we've been given. It doesn't seem like the movie is big on dialogue. If I have that impression and its wrong then I'll blame the marketing department.

    The Visuals

    by happyfat73

Another catch-cry of the hater is... "made for people with ADD". I can assure you plenty of people without that particular affliction will enjoy this flick.
    .
Look at the composition of the shots - it's actually very painterly and deliberately composed. It just seems that so many people have a very narrow view of how a film should look, sound and pace. Anything that falls outside that sope "sucks".
    .
I, for one, am all for embracing the new resources available to filmmakers. It's called diversity folks - yet some act as if CG scenery and alternative editing techniques are a personal affront to them.
    .
You are fully entitled to not like it, and you can express that dislike by not watching it. However, apart from Pallando, I'm yet to hear something from the haters that isn't homophobic, luddite, narrow-minded, parochial whining.

This trailer is the shit. but it's only a trailer, I've been fucked by trailers before. But I have to say, my big dick got hard when The Persian king said "A thousand nations have the Persian empire descend upon you. My arrows will block out the sun" and the Spartan replied, "then we will fight in the shade." I think. At that moment, I nuted. One can't help but wonder. If our warriors was like those of old, what a world, this would be.

A word about Hollywood Conservative Sexual Mores

    by sepulchrave

Oh and if you think American (Hollywood) movies are any indication of regular and well-adjusted attitude to sexuality; you really are a freak. Hollywood film exudes this rampant twisted violent homoeroticism BECAUSE they are so eager to avoid it. Other nations, particularly Hispanic nations and the UK, embrace the fluctuations of sexuality in such a way that you can’t tell by watching their films whether it is a ‘gay’ movie or a ‘straight’ movie; it’s just a movie about different types of people. Pedro Almodovar is not considered a ‘gay’ film-maker in Spain. Americans LOVE violence and ABHOR sex; therefore the sexuality has become intrinsically, weirdly linked with violence. Hollywood movies are also incredibly racist; black men are only allowed to date black or Hispanic women in the US media; white men get white girls. You guys are NOT normal; you are deeply puritanical, stereotypical and neurotic.

    by darth fabulous

Zack Snyder's 300 looks like The Cell...or even a CGI'ed up version of portions of the Losing My Religion R.E.M. video. It looks wildly overacted as some have mentioned in the talkback. Yeah, it's striking visually, but it doesn't feel groundbreadking in the way that Sin City was.

    Great trailer

    by kuryakin

Because it makes you want to see the movie, if only to bitch about how it isn't historically accurate or looks like a video game or whatever you want to say to make yourself look clever.

I think the look of the film is pretty startling, in the same way that Sin City was - when I saw the first trailers for that I was really pissed off with the style, yet when I saw the film in its entirety I loved it. This is just a trailer, of course they're going to put in the most memorable images.
My favourite was the guy flying towards the other guy on the throne, in a Jeff Hardy style.
I mean do you think it's possible to make a historical epic like this WITHOUT using CGI? Course not, so why not go all out and give it that crazy mythical look?

And for all you guys moaning about it being 'gay' - give it up lads, the best action movies are also the gayest. Naked sweaty men grappling with each other? You fucking love it.

And he's shouting because he's talking to a bunch of soldiers & doesn't have a megaphone and is under a bit of stress seeing as how there's a million Persians looking to kick fuck out of him.
I think you'd be a bit shouty too.
Also it covers up his speech impediment.

PS Anyone notice a resemblance between Gerard Butler & Freddy Mercury? I think it's the teeth...

Cuz every time I see a male abdomen I just whip my dick out and start yankin as hard as I can! I mean if you look back through history everytime there is anything naked it is about sex. Its science. I had no idea there were so many John Ashcrofts running around this site. Did he start cloning himself or something? Yeah and why on earth is this movie looking not real because I like all my movies entirely naturalistic. I fucking hate LOTR and SW because of all that CGI and style! The only movies I like are home movies and stage plays...that is as real as it gets folks. No CGI in real life. Seriously though either ever one of you is 15 and insecure or just a really pathetic excuse for an adult to still think this way. It is just kinda sad.

Darth Bogart you stupid little girl

    by masterkenobi

Only young teenage girls argue like you. Your ideas about homophobia-homosexuality are from the stoneage. Something young fools like to throw at each other at school. How about that? You are either a girl or gay. I think you are gay. No make that a lesbian.
Is it pretty sure what I´m driving at? No Sparta wasn´t the ideal state, nor do I hate gays. I just said that most people didn´t like the film Alexander because Oliver Stone made him bisexual, which he was. My problem was with Alexander´s character, not with his gayness. I didn´t dislike him because he was gay/bisexual, I disliked him because he behaved like a pussy all the time, he wasn´t great, unlike the character of Maximus. The real Alexander was probably like Stone made him in the film, but that was also the films greatest weakness, people don´t want historical realism, they want to be entertained!! That´s why 300, with all it´s half naked men, whose bodies I will admire without flinching and be inspired by without ever being aroused by them, will make tons of money.

“900LBGorilla” understands where I´m coming from because I “cites historical evidence to support the likely true position that Spartans did not from a societal standpoint condone/favor homosexuality” and wasn´t attacking gays!!

Master Kenobi, 900Gorilla, you really have convinced me

    by darth_bogart

with you brilliant argumentation. Let me summarize your thoughts: Darth Bogart is gay, probably a gay girl and shoul go fuck some asses. Really intelligent, guys. As a matter of fact your very post confirms most views I have on homophobia.

1.) You guys are obsessed. You see see homosexuality as a threat. Don't tell me Master Kenobi put that long historical lecture on this talkback to simply show us historical facts. He shows us his image of an ideal society (manly Spartans without homosexual tendencies treating their wives in a good way) and contrasts that with his distopia: Athens, the place of corruption and vases that depict homosexual sex. If that isn't homophobia, I don't know what.

2.) The way in which you have to stress that you feel totally comfortable with watching bulky half-naked man-butt is hilarious. You know, most heteros just watch it without having gay or anti-gay thoughts in our heads and we don't even have to stress our non-arousedness all the time. That does make one suspicious. You are comfortable with watching men on screen? Congratulations, welcome to the hetero club. But why even mention it all the time.

Ah well, I guess I am writing in vain anyway, all I'll get back from people like you is "you are gay. a gay girl.
    You are a little sad.

Homophopia is still gay. And stressing and underlining and repeating your heterosexuality doesn't change that.

No, you are a fucking parrot Darth Bogart

    by masterkenobi

A gay parrot. That´s why: "And stressing and underlining and repeating your heterosexuality doesn't change that."
Where is all this stressing and…and…and? I was comparing films set in the ancient world, and was talking about facts vs. fantasy, homoerotic subtext vs. gay bashing and you attacked me for that. I agree with talbackers that say most movies coming out today have homoerotic subtext, but we still love those movies, like Rambo, Predator and Commando with Schwarzenegger. Movies made in the 80´s that are no longer made today. There are exceptions of course; when the homoeroticism goes too far like in "Batman and Robin", but that movie was totally gay anyway made by a director who had lost it. And no I´m not stressing anything, before you start again, fucking parrot. Take Bryan Singer, who makes great movies, because he knows how to not make gay characters. He creates believable characters, with great actors. So am I bashing gays, now? Bryan Singer is openly gay, but I appreciate his work very much.

    300 is about warfare IMHO

    by nohubris

The hero of the movie is King Leonidas. In this movie, he has a gorgeous wife. We even see him with her in a love scene – and he’s having fun (I mean he is not grinning and bearing it). The character is into the opposite sex…300, a movie based on Frank Miller's ART, is about ancient warfare and outnumbered Spartans. Thus, the soldiering up (i.e. the yelling. Athletes do it in sports all the time. Pick one) and triceps and biceps (i.e. muscles) - mean you are a warrior who is ready to wield your sword and spear against thousands of enemies. As a non-homophobic straight guy, that’s ALL I see, nothing more. But hey, it’s a free country.

    by darth_bogart

that was nearly a rational, coherent argument. You are definitely improving. And I even agree on some of your ideas. Sure do we heteros recognize homoerotic undertones without hating the movies, I mean that goes back to the classics (Schiller's pieces are essentially rather gay). You still have a tendency to equate gayness with something negative, e.g. when you stress that you like Bryan Singer because his characters are not gay. If by that you mean that you hate characters that adhere to a certain stereotype of homosexuakity, I couldn't agree more. If you however mean that you like Singer because he doesn't show gayness I have a problem with that. Your post on history was by the way much more than only a neutral reconstruction of facts. Read it again, you clearly present the Spartans as more positive because they were supposedly less gay. I got a strong impression of a momobashing slant. Maybe I am wrong, but having known homosexuals whose life had turned into hell after their coming out I react rather emotionally on the subject.

when he says "superserious." Frank Miller's work is only good when he doesn't take himself too seriously, and adds lots of dark humour. Hell, I even liked The Dark Knight Strikes Again because of the great dark comedy. Sin City was funnier than any comedy Hollywood has produced in the last five years, and it was also dark as hell. My major worry is that without enough humour 300 is going to fall flat.

    Darth Bogart- hypocrisy incarnate

    by 900lbgorilla

Let’s see you just criticized me for calling you gay? TELL ME you’re fucking kidding – please… I mean do you know the word “shame”? No? OK-Let’s review. Darth Kenobi gives a logically argued, fact supported post about why Sparta did not promote homosexuality…and YOUR response is: >>>>> Then you have the gall to say WE are obsessed with Gays? You are the DEFINITION of gay obsessed- you respond to a fact based post with an “argument” supported with the awesome argument that the only way Kenobi could site such horrific facts would be because he is a repressed fag…I mean LMFAO! Again, you use no logic, no facts, indeed you offer no refutation based on anything resembling someone with any intellect to speak of…. you are just apparently REALLY pissed that someone doesn’t follow your drooling PC fantasy of an all gay history. Not feeling it...

    by ron2112

I know I'm late to the party and no one will ever read this, but whatever. I'm just not feeling this trailer. Maybe it's because I never read the book, but I'm seeing a lot of green-screened heads on very unconvincing (and sometimes quite dull) CG backgrounds, and the whole thing looks VERY cartoony to me. Maybe context will bring this thing to life, but as it is, this whole trailer looks like a bad cut scene from an XBox360 game. Not feeling it at all.

By the way, the Spartans were trash

    by fluffyunbound

If we're going to talk about the historical Sparta, let's remember that the Spartans fucking failed. Their society combined the worst features of communism and oligarchy, and as a result their society was almost laughably stagnant after the initial period of energy connected with the creation of its institutions. Every society around them outgrew them and Sparta turned into a hick country village. Even at the height of their power they were inferior to the Athenians in virtually every way, including militarily, and their success in taking Athens down was largely due to the fact that most other Greek states saw Athens as the bigger threat. So let's not idealize them too much, m'kay? Their "legend" is mainly the result of the fact that the story of Leonidas appeals to the concept of bravery most favored by schoolboys and military amateurs.

I agree with you most of the time and the first part of your post is all true as well. I disagree with your passing evaluation of Sparta’s military prowess (Obviously you need to review the trailer at the top of this link again). Yes, Sparta certainly did have an inferior political structure to Athens- but I don’t blame them too much for that one -and you shouldn’t either- in that respect Athens was in a class by itself. Besides, if you keep up with this line of argument our friendly neighborhood leftists won’t know who to cheer for… the child molesters with the amazing democracy - or the communists who somehow failed to evolve into such a sexually ambiguous society…

As I said in an earlier post… Reading comprehension ain’t a lib strong suit is it? Thanks for proving my point…. Now go back, read my posts again (slowly in your case- and using a dictionary as necessary) and you will see that no where in my post am I AT ALL “bent out of shape about being called on my homosexuality”. What did “bend me out of shape” was pretty clear- and I can see why a lib missed the concept as it somehow seems foreign to most of you –so allow me to spell it out… I was bent out of shape by blatant hypocrisy combined with purely ad-hominem arguments entirely driven by emotion and with a complete lack of anything resembling logic and/or facts. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind biting sarcasm now and again…heck I really appreciate it when it is skillfully applied.. but said application involves backing it up with something more intelligent than the elementary school argument that equates to “if you can smell it, then you did it”. Oh and by the way, you get freaks in every walk of life…difference is when a republican is a freak (like sending some sick PMs, but not really doing anything physical) he resigns disgraced by his party, when a Dem actually DOES screw an underage page and gets caught, he gets a standing ovation on the floor from the Democrats , then elected to 13 more years of service, and is later elected by “pillars of morality” like Pelosy to important committee positions….and the the republicans are freaks? Duuuuhhhh okaaaayyy… clap away like the hypocrites you vote for do when the shoe is on the other foot- you guys would be funny if it all weren’t so darn pathetic.

Seplchrve we disagree-but you made a good point earlier

    by 900lbgorilla

Yes the catching is a pain. I thnk you make a good point in an earlier post -though I disagree with much of what you say about Hollywood earlier on–as I think the films are reverse racist – the bad guy almost always has to be a white dude now, and African Americans are almost always seen as moral paragons (my main issue is not that they have one race or another be bad/good in a specific film, but that every film seems to need to reflect the same thing). On your interracial relationship point- though I haven’t thought of it too much, I note that Will Smith “dates” multiple races of women in his films. Where I think you make a really good point is that we (in the US) seem to accept violence far more than sex. This is not to say that I think we should be an open sexual society to the level seen on the other end of the pond- but films about mutilation, torture, and extreme violence easily pull and R and have a lower rating than films with sex (even what is seen as soft core porn- no genitalia shown can’t get an R where a film with gruesome torture easily can). That is a bit twisted… (ie Hard Torture porn is more accepted than soft sexual porn here)

And Fox news and Jerry Falwell, and Goerge W trying to justify opting out of the Genenva Convention, Gitmo, santioning torture, and the creationism museum; I think we've the right to be a bit worried. Sure, us pinko, commie, liberal Eurotrash would all be speaking German if it wasnt for you guys, but that was 1940. You've actually gone backwards in the last 60 years. As I said, I hold out hope. Hey Teamwak.

    by 900lbgorilla

I appreciate that you are approaching this in a reasoned tone, but you are extremely misinformed on some off these issues. First, I’ll say that though I am very disappointed in Europe’s current state, I have a lot of respect for their historical accomplishments (especially in England) so I am not Anti –Europe for its own sake. But to the issues, let’s hit this point by point: Fox news- yeah great buzzword in the mass liberally biased world (and US) media, but I guarantee you can’t cite any incidents of actual bias - they are if anything (from my perspective) also liberal on many items-though they certainly generally lean right (which is good because the right “tends” to also be logically correct). Conversely the bias in our lib media has many examples of easily provable bias- the most hilarious example being Dan Rather and his forged document reporting… we need more fox News types if anything- because when all the information comes from one ideology, they tend not to call each other on their own bullshit.---- --- Falwell- not sure what you are referring to on that one… I’m not religious anyway, but the atheists over here tend to be the ones who take illegitimate positions from what I see (not always, but more often than not). ---- ----- Now to the meat –Bush is ABSOLUTLEY NOT trying to “opt out’ of the Geneva Conventions. This one drives me nuts – I think more people (especially in the mentally challenged international media) should read the damn convention and make a half effort to understand it before claiming someone is breaking it. Seriously, The Geneva Conventions CLEARLY DO NOT APPLY to terrorists. They apply to convention signatories, and even then only to soldiers who meet criteria (this one reason Spies have never been given Convention rights even when they represent a country who signed it). Further though it can apply to non-signatories- it only does so when those people follow the conventions of war and follow certain uniform codes…ooops NONE of which Gitmo detainees do… sorry for the legal detail, but seriously I hate when the media misinforms people about “rights” as they always seem to when a convention (or constitution) is brought up. Finally we have slid back in 60 years- but we have slid more to liberal foolishness rather than towards fundamentalism- we were FAR more fundamentalist 60 years ago. I can’t even imagine how people seem to think we are going in that direction when we are clearly almost losing our ability to define common sense in order to seem “reasonable” even to people with baselessly loony views. Having a position does not mean that position has merit… no if anything we need far more fundamentalism governing- especially on issues of sovereignty –fundamentalism is just the opposite of anarchy- neither are good in extremes, but you need to have balanced elements of each to maintain a society in a manner that lets it survive on the one hand and doesn’t let it slip into fascism on the other...we are currently leaning too far towards the anarchy end of the scale currently. Cheers.

Oh I forgot to mention. Sanctioning Torture? Huh? I’m sorry, but that’s another propaganda tool of the media- let’s not change the meaning of words to make a point. You want torture- let Saddam get a hold of you. Some loud music and chilly asses ain’t torture- by ANY stretch of the imagination. Also conservatives have a great sense of humor about these issues- you just don’t see it over there because it tends to be placed on Radio more than TV (though CNN now has a conservative who uses some humor in his show).

    by teamwak

I appriciate a reasoned rebutal, even if I dont see eye to eye with you on the Geneva Convention. I cant argue with the semantics of the convention, but I react more to what actively foregoing on it implies. There are people in Gitmo who have been there for years and will never have a trail or possibly get released. Theyve now started sucide pacts to end it. In Europe we have the European Convention on Human Rights. A very PC bit of legislation, but sometimes you can be reminded of what happens when a government has ultimate power with no checks and balances [Senate and Congress, yeah really?] And your presidents veto of stem cell research, and comments on being on a mission from God scare us all to hell. And as for Fox, (I know you will say I am just quoting Jon Stewart but I am sure that the Daily Show does not show doctored clips), during the Mark Foley coverage Fox started a debate how the Democrats had done this before, then they showed footage of Foley and they changed his party to "D". And Cheney has stated any room he visits must have the TV news on Fox only. Only one opinion of any event will give you a skewed view. Thats what worrys me about the power of your news media. Cheers

    Good conversation Teamwak

    by 900lbgorilla

A few good topics in your response: I understand the concern about no timeline/no trial prisoners like in Gitmo- but it has always been this way in war. Remember these are not civilian criminals- and whenever POW’s have been taken in the past, their holding period was usually defined as “when the war is over”. Now that admittedly leads to a unique situation here since we are not in a declared war with a specific nation (not that these ever end on a schedule, but they at least seem more limited by their nature). But even by Geneva, the holding rules don’t change. What changes under Geneva, is that we are only allowed to get name rank, & # from the prisoner (there may be other stipulations I am not remembering right now and am too lazy to re-read)- but with a Non Geneva prisoner, we can use harsher interrogation techniques. That is the main difference- and I am ALL FOR harsher interrogations on terrorists. Unlike Geneva signatories, these do not even pretend to fight by any rule of war- indeed they do the exact opposite and inflict maximum innocent civilian casualties and hide among & target women and children. Having a harsher enemy necessities harsher proactive meathods. This is unfortunate, but a reality as we saw in WWII which degraded into a “total war” on all aspects of the enemy for survival. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t “like” when that happens, but when it does, we must protect ourselves first. I also don’t condone true torture- and I don’t think you would disagree with loud music, making a terrorist too cold, or lack sleep in order to get future civilian targets from him. Where you and I probably disagree is that I would also waterboard his ass as well (now unfortunately banned in the US by the Republican Senate-which was an unfortunate “check” on the House and President in this case – our senate has also checked the House on MAJOR proposals this year, including immigration law, detainees and taxes – and our supreme court has also checked the president on wire tapping and some aspects of Gitmo- so there is a true check and balance over here even when one party has all elected branches of government). ------ ----- On Stem cell research- this is a political/media issue more than a substantive one. The president indicates human development begins at conception- the liberals like to play the religion aspect of this, but SCIENTIFICALLY he is actually correct as well – so I have no problem with him vetoing this research- but you should note he did not BAN the research- he just vetoed government FUNDING of the research… really an overstated issue since our big drug and medical companies do this all by themselves on most research anyway- I mean if this is really going to lead to miracle cures… no company is going to stop researching it just because they aren’t getting some corporate welfare to help them out (another nice side benefit of capitalism) -- - ----- Bush on a mission from god? I have heard him say a lot- but never that one. Where did you hear that? ---- ----- I’ll grant you the Jon Stewart “D” clip- I don’t discount a point just because of its source (unless the source is the type that lies in which case I research it) – I would chalk that one up to an error- I have watched a lot of Fox’s coverage on this, and they are very clear that Foley is a Republican- the political fallout is actually their main point- so purposely calling him a Dem would make their newscasts make no sense. ---- On the Dems doing this before Fox is 100% correct to go over this – the Dems are acting outraged that Foley sent IMs to a page (and that’s it) and act like this is a high crime that should destroy the republicans (who actively requested a police investigation and ousted Foley) conversely when a Dem ACTUALLY HAD SEX with an underage paige and they were in power- they Censured him (whoop dee doo), let him keep his job, and after he (rather unapologetically) made comments on the floor the Dems GAVE HIM A STANDING OVATION- and some of the Dems currently “outraged” later voted him into a powerful committee seat. Fox’s point is that the Dem “outrage” is clearly a political in nature- as proven by their actions in when the shoe is on the other foot (and the crime is WORSE). Bottom line- The Republicans are hard on their members who act in appropriately in this regard- the Dems protect theirs. The lib end of our media conveniently leaves that stuff on the cutting room floor. ---- ---- On the power of media, you and I agree in concept- and before there was a Fox- all our national televised medial leaned left- so you should applaud Fox- they are the counter media that was SORELY needed here- and in much of the world actually. As to Cheney asking for Fox- the channel criticizes him when appropriate, so that doesn’t concern me much- but the fact that Clinton and other liberal Politicians are on record as demanding CNN be shown when they are present-and no one ever seemed too concerned about that… bewilders me. (An ex member of The Clinton team actually giggled that Clinton’s own inner circle called CNN the “Clinton News Network”). Anyway this is interesting Cheers again- and question – What country are you from?

I thought you were probably from England. Not to begin a foreign policy debate on this, but Bush actually follows Churchill-ian Doctrine (actually put a picture of him in the Whitehouse when he 1st moved in). Do they teach you guys about Churchill over there (He must not go over well with the current/more liberal attitudes). Much of England’s people seem less favorable to proactive action than Blaire-and I have wondered that quite a bit- you guys lived the Churchill-Chamberlain debate in that nation, so I’m surprised it doesn’t resonate more (though maybe that’s why you are actually proactive compared to the rest of Europe)??? I think I mentioned “The Gathering Storm” earlier in this thread. I think its one of the most important books of the 20th century… Churchill was my favorite leader of the WWII era- and to your comment on the US saving Europe- I agree, but it seems the party that gets the least credit for their impact and bravery currently are the English. People can say what they want about Russia’s grinding contribution, but aside from The Battle of Britain over the English channel helping Hitler get kooky enough to attack the Ruskies in the Winter (which helped save their asses), England’s decimation of the Luftwaffe had a massive impact on the later stages of the war… The German- Russian conflict would have had a much different face had Hitler not been pressed into his panic/stupidity ridden fall/winter assault- and had he had the full force of the Luftwaffe with it’s aces still around when he did it …. Poland had a pretty massive army too- and they saw the results of fighting Hitler’s fully rounded war machine….the Ruskies were spared that harsh reality by the English.

    by 900lbgorilla

LOL- I didn’t see scrubs, so not sure what that is, But the women I was thinking of were: Tea’ Leone in Bad Boys (and I believe the “Masseuse” that Martin Lawrence kicked out was a hot white chick), Bridget Moynahan in I Robot (A brunette, but I don’t think hair color matters here), Linda Fiorentino Men in Black, Eva Mendez in Hitch (Hispanic yes, but she is a far cry from African American), Selma Hayek (same vein Wild Wild West)…I mean Damn now that I think about it black chicks might start getting pissed at him as he rarely co-stars with one as a girlfriend in his major movies…. They’d probably out right kick his ass if Shark tale weren’t a cartoon.

Eva Mendez is Latino, but there are many African American women who look like her (or are even lighter). Unfortunately, for a long time those with that look were the few who got good roles. Consider certain African American sororities where the complexions range from dark to light, bright and almost white.

    by burgundy82

How about everything is ahouted because it's a fucking MOVIE TRAILER. Fact: With the possible exception of romantic comedies, 90 percent of the dialogue in movie trailers is either A.) shouted, or B.) whispered. Sometimes, just to mix it up, a trailer will have both (example: horror flicks). That's because the people marketing the movie want to convey how high the stakes are... Therefore, you cherry-pick cheesy, oft-repeated lines like "We've got to stop them!", or, "This is our last chance!". Quotes like that, though featured in the film's previews, may or may not be indicative of quality of the performances/script. SO FUCK OFF, WHINERS AND HATERS. It's the preview for a WAR movie... there's gonna be lotsa yelling.

Crazy I am not talking about Will’s love interests or TV career (and I didn’t bring up the Hollywood movie subject- mine was a response). Also Bad boys was Tea- Leone- she is white. Bad Boys 2 yes, she was African American- Enemy of the State- now you have 2, but even then the sexiest scene in that movie was still between Will and a bunch of white chicks in Lingerie. Ali…ok that’s 3, but seeing as that was a biography its not like there was much choice there…Pamela Anderson or Sophie Marceau cold not have gotten that role…. my point was that he has plenty of non –African American interests in movies… the fact that upon reflection they outnumbered the African American love interests was just an unexpected Bonus.

Yeah Eva has shade to her skin- no darker than many Italian women, but OK… however, bottom line is if you painted her green, no one would describe her features as African American… and if she played say Martin Luther Kings wife or a slave from the 1800’s in a movie… I think people might make a comment or two about how out of place that would be… if she played an Italian chick… I doubt many comments would be made- so yeah, I stand by that statement….she’s far from African American.

    by 900lbgorilla

Problem is you are generalizing. By your argument there can be no affirmative action (which there shouldn’t as it clearly breaks equal employment opportunity laws and the equal protection clause of the constitution)….but by your argument, there can be no affirmative action, because no one knows what race anyone is anyways…. We are getting a bit off track though (which is partly my fault here) Point is not only is Eva not African American- and doesn’t look like she’s African American either… On a sidenote, “diversity” by its current implications is used as a bad thing…with reverse racism and glorification of every culture except the American culture…. what we should aspire to is healthy assimilation and “colorblindness” ie… Martin Luther King had it right in the first place… but once the “social engineers” got ahold of civil rights when he was gone…. aaaahhhh (I for one certainly wouldn’t drive on any bridge they engineered that’s for sure).

    900LBGorilla, Race, and Ethnicity

    by nohubris

IMHO affirmative action had noble intentions, but got twisted a bit in its execution. Here's how it was explained by one of my profs: it was initially designed to be a legal remedy for unconstitutional acts or wrongs done to African Americans (i.e. centuries of slavery, Jim Crow, grandfather clause, poll tax, and other denied rights). When a legal wrong is done, the aggrieved party is to be put back in the position they would have been in if the contract (i.e. the constitution) had been adhered to -- enter affirmative action...To get back on track, Eva IS Latino. I watch movies with different ethnicities because I like diversity and the varied cultural flavorings. When I, along with many friends and colleagues, use the term DIVERSITY, it means respect for all cultures, including American -which is made up of many such cultures and increasingly so...This is a TB about 300. Just as the ancient world had a cosmopolitanism about it, the way things are going, America and is becoming the same, and will have to embrace it in one form or another, along with the rest of the world, to a avoid a potentially mutually destructive clash of civilizations. You mentioned Dr. King. I'm sure that is what he would have loved to see.

    Affirmative Action

    by 900lbgorilla

Yes, your prof is largely right about the beginnings of Affirmative action- problem is, in order to create affirmative action they broke the constitution again (the other way)- and continue to do so (and there will always be an argument to continue). It is a disaster that divides and is by constitutional language (if not the current absurd interpretation) illegal. It is also outright destructive as it creates a focal point for races to fight about- that’s the problem with social engineering- it creates more problems than it solves…. ---- On the culture note I also respect other cultures, I wouldn’t change that there are many in the world- it is fascinating to see all the aspects of human culture…. Problem is the greatest human cultures are Western Civilization. From human rights, to technology, to society (democracies and republics)…. And we are allowing only our culture to be eliminated by focusing on cultural diversity within it instead of assimilation –Western Europe is making the same stupid move. One of the early 20th century presidents had a great line about immigration- basically that all rights and respect should be given to an immigrant without prejudice- but provided they are here to BECOME Americans in every sense of the word…. (A paraphrase). Anyway I wouldn’t want to make every county on the planet exactly like the American culture… the world would be a blander place… but what would be far worse than that- is the reverse- drowning our culture- which is exactly what is happening.- and when this happens more, the probability for internal strife increases. You can already see the balkanization of the US by culture – and it is getting worse. Pure cultural diversity …doesn’t work. Assimilation- does. (On this front look at even mellow Canada- they just missed fracturing their nation in half within the decade over this).

Western culture is not THE greatest, but one of the...

    by nohubris

...greatest along with many others in history. Sumeria, Akkadia, Egypt, China, Persia, Mayan, Nubian (which conquered Egypt at one point) - these were great non-Western civilizations. I mentioned in the first 300 TB that the Greeks (as well as the Romans) saw themselves as a different race than the Nordic types, yet Nordic cultures have borrowed from them and now even claim Greece as their own. Caesar conquered the Brits in 55 BC, but the Brits later built their own empire. Prior to the British Empire, the non Western Moors rebuilt the first great city of Europe - Cordoba, Spain, while London had mud streets. Western generals/military leaders study the military arts of the North African general Hannibal and the Asian, Mongol leader Ghengis Khan. Gutenberg’s printing press was based on the Chinese printing blocks. Western mathematicians use the Mayan concept of zero. In other words throughout history, the later civilizations, especially the West, have borrowed the best of the prior ones.

Back to the race thing; WILD WILD WEST?

    by sepulchrave

Sorry to keep on at this but the mention of Linda Fiorentino in Men in Black forces me to specify; I do not mean that Will Smith or any other black actor is never seen OPPOSITE a white actress, or chatting up a white actress, or being charming to a white actress. but that he is rarely seen in ADULT sexual relationships or in marital situations with one. How often do we see black actor waking up after sex with white women, and vice versa? I don't mean this pruriently, merely as a reflection of what undoubtedly happens to be in the world. PG children's movies really are not good enpough in this area; i know far too many happy interrracial couples in the US (midwest actually) to still not angry when i see nothing resembling the real world in the movies. The Othello thing is still alive and well in Hollywood. This racism is enforced fromm both sides, I hasten to add. Television viewing in America is totally segregated and there's nobody you can blame for that; blacks do NOT watch the same shows as whites. I just come from a UK based cultural background and there are a LOT of mixed marriages on TV here.

    The West is the greatest…

    by 900lbgorilla

I am not saying there were not other great cultures or conquerors…but the greatest Governmental, Social and technological systems have overwhelmingly been produced by the West. Rome and Greece are part of Western culture… China in particular had a great early technological culture… but the real point here is that we are allowing western culture to be submerged in favor of dim–witted multiculturalism… Other cultures do not largely embrace this self destructive concept, so they’ll no doubt hang around…. Our future appears a but dimmer and/or at least more conflict ridden.

I don’t doubt it’s a bit more mixed in the UK, and I did see you were talking sex…. But in a lot of these movies, particularly Will Smiths- hes just not married at all- he’s the single action star… so that doesn’t really apply. And in Bad Boys in particular there was a pretty hot scene with Tea’ hitting on Martin Lawrence…anyway I’ll grant you that the UK may show this more… but the real world is I think represented in Hollywood (though it makes me sick to say that) in this regard… people tend to stick within their race, Hollywood shows divergence from that at times- but there no reason to force that into movies as some political statement when it is not all that common anyway…. not that it should be avoided- but the last thing I want to see is the continued trend that they have to count how many races/mixed couples are represented in a film/ commercial/ poster…or whatever- the quota thing is silly.

    The West and Greatness

    by nohubris

Social and technological systems of the West would not be possible without those that preceded it. By the way, ancient Rome and Greece are on record as seeing themselves as different peoples and civilizations than their northerly neighbors. Even Teddy Roosevelt has written on this subject. Moreover, it’s not like civilization went from Greece and Rome directly to the rise of the modern West. There was something after the fall of Rome called the DARK AGES the 5th century AD to 13th,14th or 15th century, depending on the area of Europe. During that period great governmental, social and technological systems were advanced by the Moors, Christian Nubia, China, Ghana, Mali, Songhay. In their own right, they were prolific in economic organization and cities of learning. Even before Greece and Rome, Sumerians created the oldest known language. Prior to the Western concept of rule of law, Hammurabi developed his law code. Egypt developed astronomy, engineering, geometry and built pyramids. Before the social contract theory, ancient Hebrew prophets trumpeted the need for social justice. What we call the West, was able to build on these various developments, which were created by others. Granted, as an American, I’ll take the U.S. Constitution over any other form of government, but I am fully aware of those whose shoulders we are standing upon...To address you main point, the Ottoman Turks had a long lasting multicultural society, spanning 600 years. If they could do it under a caliphate, then we can do the same under the U.S. Constitution and democracy.

I accept that that may be true. but if it is; it's sad and American. There are mixed race marriage and couples everywhere in the UK and France, and even in Ireland, a mere five years after the first immigrants really started to arrive; seeing African men with white girl-friends is common on the streets of Dublin.

You're becoming a very segregated nation; that's extrememly dangerous for national unity and cohesion.
