Wanna Meet Terry Gilliam On The Streets Of New York Today (Wednesday)?!?!

Published at:  Oct 03, 2006 10:59:10 PM CDT

Merrick here…

Terry Gilliam will be stalking the streets of New York City tomorrow. He’ll be handing out flyers for his new film TIDELAND [OFFICIAL SITE HERE], talking to anyone who will talk to him, signing autographs, and generally hobnobbing with the city folk.

One really good place to find him? 733 11th Ave at 51st St. -- he'll be there around 4:45pm (which is my not so subtle way of saying: THIS IS WHERE AND WHEN YOU SHOULD GO LOOK FOR HIM!). This is where the line cues up for THE DAILY SHOW with Jon Stewart. He is not appearing on the show – he’ll just be there saying “Hey” to the line people, and should hang around for 30-45 minutes.

If you decide to go find Terry, remember that THE DAILY SHOW will be letting people in for taping around this time – please go out of your way to not interfere with the show’s staff. You know, show them courtesy, respect, all that.

TIDELAND opens Friday October 13...a fine portent for any movie.

So…if he’s not gonna be on THE DAILY SHOW even though he’s already going to be there macking on its line...why isn’t he on the show? Or THE COLBERT REPORT for that matter? Ah, well, go meet him. And, SEND ME PICTURES!

    damn it

Wow. I wish I was in New York. But I am stuck in Minnesota, Terry Gilliam's childhood home. (which he hates and has disowned, I believe)

    saw the film last night

    by 3rdrate

He gave a great QandA at AMMP ... too bad the film was terrible. There was dead silence following it.

Thats just an incredibly classy thing to do

    by industrykiller!

If I was back on the East Coast right now I would be there with the qucikness. The guy is so passionate about his film he just wants to talk to the fans about it, it's nice to know that someone out there is a true artist and actually cares. I would expect anyone in the vicinity would attend considering he is one of the greatest living directors.

When it's playing in SoCal, I'll care.

    by scrivener

Frankly, if it's only getting a NY release on October 13, I couldn't give a rats ass. That's a limited release in the same way Kingdom of Heaven Directors Cut was a limited release. Let us know when it's playing somewhere closer to the movie capitol of the world (I don't mean Toronto, either).

even my sex tape is better. than again my life-size cardboard cut outs of real women are more realistic than his.

    Oh c'mon people

    by industrykiller!

Even if you arent in the area you should still give the guy props for taking it directly to the fans. 99.9% of directors wouldnt be caught dead doing something like this and 99% are far less talented than Terry Gilliam. Are you guys so fucking jaded that one of the greatest directors alive does something incredibly cool just for you and all you can think to do is ridicule? That's just disrespectful and pathetic. Go watch your DVD of X3.

    The Daily Show staff...

    by huffy_henry

Why, exactly, do they deserve such respect? Fuck 'em. And fuck Gilliam, too. I saw the Brothers Grimm, muthafucka. Would one of the "greatest directors alive" make that? Hell no.

    A good idea IMO

    by derlanghaarige

He made a film that he really seem to love. So much that he advertises it BY HIMSELF, because he knows that the distributors will let him down!
Stephen King did something similar with 28 Days Later (which was of course not his film. he just liked it.).
If I would be in NY, I would stalk Gilliam!

    by orbots commander

he'd be handing out flyers together with the Yankees. Woo-hooo!!! Go Yanks---Eat it Tigers fans!!

Ahem. Excuse me. Anyway, I'll be in the office today in Port Washington, out on Long Island. If I had the day off I would've hopped the LIRR into Penn to catch ol' Terry working the streets. Oh well.

    Damn

    by doomius 2.0

I would love the opportunity just to sit down and pick his brain! He is one of the greatest directors of the past 30 years, but he never seems to get the respect he deserves! Probably because he is notorious for being difficult and always going over budget! Brothers Grimm was his weakest movie no doubts there, but it wasn't entirely his fault, the studios constant interference led to the final results, which is a shame because it looked like it had a lot of potential. Here's to hoping that Tideland, a film in which he had full creative control will be a return for him!

This is the same guy who autographed coconuts, right? If you see that as a reduction, perhaps you don't know much about this cat, like say, his sense of humor.

Even he admitted the marketing/ad campaign for SR was weak. Props to Gilliam for not taking it lying down.

    mattw nailed it!

    by orbots commander

Meeting one's favorite artists probably consists of uncomfortable silences and you end up saying stuff like, "So, great weather, huh?" and "How about those Jets/Yankees/Islanders?"
A friend of a friend once met Steven Spielberg and his wife in Manhattan and was reduced to, Friend: "Hey, great to meet you, I'm a fan!"
Spielberg: "Um, great. Thanks. Well, gotta go!" (Pulls wife along)
Friend:"Um, yeah, bye." (Turns to friend) "Let's go hit that bar."

Why are you blaming Gilliam for Brothers Grimm?

    by scrivener

That totally was not his fault. He was forced to work with a shit script by shit-script-king Ehren Kruger, with Studio-enforced cuts, and studio-enforced actors. Gilliam did the best with what he had, but anyone who isn't a complete talkback douche should know this already (and should also know that Gilliam works best when he has total creative freedom).
