Miyazaki making another Studio Ghibli toon!!!

Published at:  Oct 03, 2006 1:06:52 PM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Hayao Miyazaki is at it again. He just began work at Studio Ghibli on another animated film, following up the smash success of HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE which won everything in the world and made a mountain of money. As it should have. There's no other news. No title is known, nothing is known about the story. The only other tidbit out there is that it's slated for a Summer 2008 release. But any news of Miyazaki working again is good news. The man is the best at what he does, that's for damn sure.

    oh hell yes

    by strabo

Oh god, I love Miyazaki. I really wish someone who knows him would give him a copy of Rushdie's "Haroun and the Sea of Stories". I think it would make a perfect Miyazaki film. *sigh* Oh yeah, FIRST!

Miyazaki could do 2 hours of stick figures, and it would be the most compelling, thoughtful 2 hours of stick figures you've ever seen.

Howl's Moving Castle was one of his weaker efforts.

    by beedub

Still pretty good, but not up to par with Spirited Away. Or even Castle in the Sky.

This guy blows me away with his imagination and creative storytelling and characters! When I watch his films it like he's creating new pathways in my brain that dares me to think waaaaay outside the box. Truly awesome. P.S. Spirited Away is a masterpiece and one of my top 5 films of all time.

    miyazaki...

    by emeraldboy

There are lot of people who think he has gone downhill since my neighbour turtoro. I had never seen a Miyazaki film before Spirited away. It blew my mind away when I saw it. I dont think he can top Spirited away. Howls was a pretty movie. Pretty dull and looked like it been on a shelf for a while. Haroun is a film i too woul love to see made but I dont think it will happen. It is my favourite book that i read as child. I thought it was beautiful. Havent read anything by Rushdie since. It will be a tricky film to make haroun.

    Fuck Miyazaki!

    by rbatty024

Give me those crazy computer animated talking animals any day. I just can't get enough of those wacky animals spouting off pop-culture references like they're people. It's funny because I've seen it in another movie! Oh, and the story must involve a clash between nature and the human world. Hilarity ensues. There's no reason to mess with perfection!

...But yay! My Neighbour Totoro is my favourite of his works. Followed by Princess Mononoke. Then Porco Rosso.

    I liked Princess Motokotokoto

    by digitaldong

^yeah I spelled it wrong, but I like that one cause its hard to hate any of the characters, plus it was one fof the first animes to say " hey you know what, we should get REAL actors to voice these things instead of these E-listers" Since then the bar was raised and I perfer all my anime dubbed.

    I tend to agree, DigitalDong

    by wingnut1a

(great name btw. Ignignaught & Ur should have thier own show) ...but then again there are many examples of voicework being done by moviestars instead of actors and the results are very sad. Good voice actors need work too. =)

There's always the exception. It's a real shame that American animation has taken such a nosedive in recent years. We've never been on the cutting edge, but rarely are the studios putting out this many subpar films.

Well you know, studio execs aren't the brightest people

    by doc_strange

Otherwise we would be getting a lot more cutting edge stuff than what we're seeing. Cmon, Final Fantasy was a lot more cutting edge than the latest animal CG effort. The movie's story was awful but the CG FX took some major balls. Personally, I could think of a hundred cutting edge projects I would like to do in CG but my lack of knowledge prevents me from doing it.

    Not a huge fan.

    by chaotic blue

I'm not the biggest Miyazaki fan. Agh, sacrelige, I know. But he deformed the funny fantastic mess that was Howl's Moving Castle to make it all about his favorite theme: "War is bad, mmmmkay?" Which is all good and well and _true_, don't get me wrong. But the changes he made gave the book, in many ways, only a loose connection in theme and plot to the movie. He would mess himself, on the other hand, over Jones' Dark Lord of Derkholm, which would let him have all the fun he wanted with his favorite cliches. Yes, I'm an uber-nitpicker and Miyazaki-hater who only sees the films once in theaters and then buys the DVD so that he doesn't have to pay rental fees. You may flame me now.

I think a studio exec would make a bigger mistake investing company resources into cutting edge endeavors. I think a studio exec would make a bigger mistake investing company resources into cutting edge endeavors that would probably not make a profit. Yes, children's movies do make money, and nothing is wrong with that. Neither is creating entertainment for children. What's good about Miyazaki, is that he keeps integrity intact while still providing family entertainment.

Will Disney dub and release this one or is that over?

    by excaliburffolkes

Let's see, if this is released in Japan during summer 2008, then we'll probably see it in the US sometime in the first few months of 2009. Miyazaki is worth the wait. I'd vote "My Neighbor Totoro" and "Kiki's Delivery Service" as his two finest works.

    Howl's

    by johnno

Well for one, Howl's was an adaptation, and not an original work by Miyazaki. Even more I hear, Miyazaki wasn't even supposed to direct it... apparently the original director slated for it dropped out ro soemthing and then Miyazaki came into the project late and took over... That's what I heard anyway... Anyway I'm waiting to check otu Gedo Senki or Tales of Earthsea or whatever it is that is by Goro Miyazaki. First time direcotr, and early word is the movie has some faults, but overall is enjoyable with great Ghibli animation that sort of throws back to their earlier style. Apparently it's a lot like Princess Mononoke, and that's a good enough reason to convince me to check it out...
