Herc’s Seen Tonight’s HEROES 1.2!!

Published at:  Oct 02, 2006 8:27:56 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

I saw “Heroes” 1.2 and 1.3 together in the same sitting a week ago so I’m having trouble remembering what happens in each. But here’s a few invisotext-cloaked notes from memory:

1) 1.2 and 1.3 make me like the series more than 1.1 did.

2) Japanese Nightcrawler demonstrates a new superpower this week, a superpower that German Nightcrawler does not possess.

3) We learn that Stripper Phoenix’s doppelganger can do much more complicated things than merely punish her tormentors.

4) We learn this week precisely when the atom bomb vamporizes Manhattan.

5) We get a bunch of new regulars this week, including Greg Grunberg as the telepathic cop, Clea DuVall as a hot blonde fed, and the “Everwood” girl from the tampon commercials as Mohinder’s dad’s superhot neighbor, who seems certain to quickly evolve into the cabdriver/scientist’s love interest.

6) We meet what is presumably the series’ biggest bad, a superpowered serial killer.

    Crap

    by apersonofinterest

This show is crap. I can't believe I waited in anticipation for this. The 1st episode was poorly acted with terrible pacing. They tried to cram too much into an hour long episode, introducing too many characters. And then...where the fuck was the heroism? the flying scene at the end was totally lame. A couple of guys dangling from cables...I'll stick with Smallville.

    by spyguy

The first episode, while not perfect, showed a healthy amount of potential. This series is another slow-build like LOST, but I bet we start seeing big payoffs around November sweeps. You just gotta love the idea of a superpowered serial killer like Redstone from SUPREME POWER, though.

This show is SO bad, or at least the first ep. was. Some of the worst, most turgid, cliche-ridden dialog in a LONG time. Good grief, we even have a hooker-mom-with-a-heart-of-gold. Gahhhhh. And the story was just...meh.

This thing has JUST TONIGHT to stop with the Lucas-like dialog and cliches and lame stories and get it together, or --whomp-- out of my Tivo's season pass lineup she goes.

    by whoopdeedoo

I caught the first ep again on Skiffy and I have to say even knowing what was going to happen I still enjoyed it. That to me is the sign of a good show, can it be watched again and still be enjoyed. Caught a few little things I missed the firstgo round so it was nice. Looking forward to Grunberg's appearance as he was my favorite character on Felicity (let the slamming of Felicity begin!) And yeah I'm all for more Ali Larter near-nekkidness (had to get in the obligatory AICN Talkback immature comment there)

    Heroes Vs. Smallville

    by fluffyunbound

You can't compare the two, because they are apparently trying to use the Unbreakable trick of trying to ground the Heroes story in semi-reality, while Smallville has a tiny little small town in America that is visited by a monster or a supervillain or someone with Kryptonite every week. Apples and Oranges.

Mainly the indian guy's scenes. The girl forgets about her lizard until they listen to the phone message, a few seconds later at just the right moment the lizard appears, they put him in his tank and find the memory stick. It was a little too conveniant. So much so, even Smallville wouldn't try something like that.

    by inwosuxred

I only watched this week because I liked Hiro in the pilot. This week was much better. There is obviously alot going on, and I think alot of the things that seemed to be straight forward cliches at first will be swerved on in later episodes, such as the basic idea that these are X-men style mutants, rather than created heros. I also think this episode will lose ratings, not because of the quality, but because this was incredibly dark for a network show, and I think there will be kids who had the TVs turned off on them, or won't be allowed to watch again next week after they keep mom awake all night.

But about it being dark...yeah, I had some kids in front of the TV in our house tonight, and forked to the staircase and empty, open brainpans were more than I bargained for. That was a bit father down the 7 road than I thought network TV would be willing to go, even in a world of CSIs. Damned good, though, and at least my eight year old seemed a lot more interested in the mechanics of Hiro's space/time travel than the gore. Yeah, I'm growing her to be a nerd.

Getting better, but it still has a way to go

    by ironmuskrat

The show was a little better this week. Hiro is still cool and at this point is the only character that has a "real" superpower. Still trying to figure out what is going on with stripper girl, Evil twin? Don't make me mad Hulk power? Crazy bitch power?

So they are going to fight a super powered serial killer? Meh, whatever I will have to see how it will play out. I will guess and say that he finds other super powered types and eats their brains to gain new super powers.

    by fluffyunbound

cut out. The person who said this was very violent for a network show was right. Particularly a 9 PM show. The bodies in the trunk, the serial killer victims including the flash-forward painter dude - yikes. And again they piled all the really good reveals into the last 30 seconds - Hiro being 5 weeks into the future, the nuke going off, Milo really can fly after all, etc. I was a bit worried during the first 20 minutes with Indian Exposition Man expositing all over the place, and with Milo going through his angsty I-don't-really-have-powers-and-my-dad-killed-himself-thing and the 2nd-best-cheerleader-wants-the-attention thing, but the last half of the episode discarded all that crap and really got going.

The comic book actually has a reason and an explanation

    by fluffyunbound

in this show, so that means it isn't directly like Lost. The comic is drawn by Painter Dude Who Can See The Future, so it's organic to what we already know. And Hiro sees the comic and goes to find Painter Dude, as any reasonable person would under the circumstances. So it fits into the plot very nicely.

    I'm very encouraged

    by itchy

I think both episode 1.1 and 1.2 were relatively formulaic and "boring", but I think they suffer from the same problem most network sci-fi does: an overwhelming urge to introduce and explain all relevant factors to the "world" in the first episode. I think as they focus more on the plot and the individual heroes learning their powers, it will pick up tremendously. I'm very encouraged overall, as long as they slow down on the "explanation" and start treating their audience as if they are bright enough to fill in the blanks. The cut up head and missing brain was cool. Now I just need to find out what the deal with the comic book is. Oh - and more of the hot neighbor girl.

    by jthomasc

And this could be something that it just works itself into. But jumping around between the stories is beginning to wear on me. They need to start focusing more on one character per episode. LOST is close to a multi character formula that works but they have a much clearer connection to one story arc i.e. the stranded on a strange island thing but the flash back and episodes with the one character flashbacks help in keeping attention I wouldnt recommend it's model as the ultimate solution though because I gave up on it right after they moved into the underground condo. Right now Heroes is still too all over the map for me, and I want it to solidify because I like the premise a great deal and if the cast can gel and the arc to arc flopping can slow then I think it's could be a really great show.

    The comic book in Lost...

    by hoichitheearless

...is, at least to this point, nothing more than an easter egg. We saw it in the pilot and saw the polar bear later, and to this point in the show there has been no explanation as to it's significance. Once Hiro saw the comic it took all of 30 seconds to explain the significance of it. If that's a ripoff, than every scene with someone holding a gun is a ripoff of another scene with someone holding a gun, or a scene of people having a conversation is a ripoff of a previous scene with people having a conversation. Maybe someone should make a show where people communicate by writing with a pen lodged up their ass and they threaten each other with safety pins. At least that would be original, eh?

I thought Ep. 2 was excellent. The show is definitely a "must see" for me. Artist dude on the floor with a missing brain sets up (I hope) a very neat "can you change the future by altering the past?" time paradox situation. Only Hiro "experienced" that future, so that may give them an "out" from dealing with it directly. Still, this episode rocked and then some. The super serial killer is very interesting....what's the deal with brain theft? Is he absorbing his victims? Doing a Hannibal Lecter and just chowing down? (Fava beans, Clarice!) Good stuff, Maynard.

Apparently, some of you downie-clownies would rather be watching ACCORDING TO JIM or THE CLASS. Whatever floats your boat, guys. Me, I'm digging HEROES so far and it looks like I was right about November being big, what with Peter's brother winning the election and the nuke in five weeks' time. Oh, and yes, Stacy Haiduk did play Lana Lang on the ADVENTURES OF SUPERBOY series back in the early '90s. Some people may also know her from her vital role as "that chick on season one of SEAQUEST." And MISFITS OF SCIENCE did rock back in the day. If MAMA'S FAMILY can get a DVD set, MISFITS certainly deserves one...

It is better in every respect - characters that have real personalities, mysteries that are being solved, and more than 10 minutes of forward momentum per episode. This show is going to bury Lost this year.

Was the first show that I was ever heartbroken when it was cancelled... If they're going to introduce new characters regularly, they should give us a "Johnny B"-like character...If I remember correctly Herc said that it was the same writing team as Misfits, so that'd be a fun little shout out to the old fans...

    2nd episode was better, but..

    by orbots commander

HEROES still has that shot-on-videotape cheeseball look which reveals the show's limited budget. LOST and NBC's own KIDNAPPED has a much slicker, shot on 35MM, cinematic look. Maybe now that it's a ratings hit NBC can improve the production values? For example, the flying effects, limited though they were, were wretched. Smallville has better flying effects. The most important thing though, the quality of the writing, did improve with the second episode, though it's still far from great. The thing that'll keep me watching are the very well done cliff-hangers.
Oh, and to the guy who inquired as to why Hiro is everybody's favorite character: it's because, funnily enough, he's the easiest person to identify with. Even though he's from Japan, he's an everyday working guy, stuck in a cubicle, with dreams of something grander for himself. Also his sense of awe and wonder at his powers makes him a fun character to watch.

The picture I get when I watch HEROES is kind of fuzzy and blurry around the edges. But HOUSE, KINAPPED, STUDIO 60 and LOST which are also broadcast in HD don't come in like this. I assumed it was because the HEROES producers were shooting on video.

Clea Duvall is hot... NEVER. Not if she was the last woman on earth... Never. What was with the NO makeup? How many itsy-bitsy moles could one person have on their skin? And the fake blond hair?! Sheesh! I think my diatribe is just a natural reaction to the fact that Clea's acting-- like most of the actors in this show-- SUCKED. (And she was FANTASTIC in Carnivale!) I'm not believing her as a TOUGH agent. In what world does Clea Duvall turn around and cuff an innocent Greg Grunberg with one arm?! If you look at that scene closely, you'll see that Grunberg just turned HIMSELF around-- to follow the piss poor blocking the director wanted. My biggest problem with Heroes is that there are too many characters, too many scene changes, etc. You can see how they are rushing to finish each episode by the piss poor cinematography and lighting in almost every set up. You KNOW they are rushing when normally reliable actors (like Clea Duvall and Greg Grunberg) are caught on camera with sub-par work.

It's taking time to set up, you have to introduce the characters. That's why it's moving slow. If you actually read a book you'd know that they all start off setting up the world you're about to enter and introducing the characters and what those characters want. My god you kids are fucking pathetic. Sit back, enjoy the show and let it unfold. And the first episode kicked ass and anyone who didn't like it either doesn't like SCI-Fi or has a serious case of ADD. FUCK!! It's a TV series. Series = multiple episodes of a show with the same cast.

The second episode added more characters, reveals more plot, showed more powers, people were brutally murdered, nukes exploded, herion addicts shot up, cops got arrested, cheerleader chick had a "Death Becomes Her" neck injury, gah....what more could the show have done to pic up the pace?

Sorry, but the X-Men analogy sucks.

    by flaffey

Nightcrawler teleports because of his father's realm. His father is a demon who is ruler of an entire realm that, when Nightcrawler teleports, he teleports into. That's why there's a sulpher smell and the bamph. When he teleports back in, he's ripping the space in the area.

Hiro most likely teleports by freezing time around him, moving himself, and then releasing the hold on time. Nightcrawler shows absolutely no ability to manipulate time in any way.

Phoenix is much, much more than simply a second personality that kills people randomly. It's a space entity that represents all psionic energy of the past, present, and future. The only reason it went batshit crazy was it wanted power it never had -- emotion.

The character Niki seems to have another personality that she sees in the mirror and could even be said to be the fight part of her fight or flight personality. Not a cosmic entity.

Claire is nothing like Wolverine. She doesn't have bone skeleton claws or a metallic skeleton. She's not over 100 years old.

Peter is nothing like Rogue. Rogue needs contact to use powers. Peter's power seems to be empathy and template of powers -- he would be somewhat like Mimic.

Matt, the cop, is not Xavier. Xavier can interfere in thoughts and implant, so far the character of Matt can only hear.

Nathan, who can fly, is not like Storm or most other characters that can do much more than fly. The reasons should be obvious.

The X-Men analogies really are poorly constructed even if we pretend the two premises are remotely the same. The powers are absolutely nothing alike.

    by thecomedian

...Need to match up the dates. They're apparently doing this show somewhat in "real time". Hiro thought it was Oct 2nd. He leaped himself to Nov 6th. Which means they thwart the nuke in time for sweeps. That means there's a whole season worth of shit that's going to hit the fan well after our "heroes" have had their 1st team up unless it ends up just being Hiro and the Clark Kent ripoff dude teaming up with the painter and hindu prof X. Clark Kent ripoff dude's Lex Luthor ripoff brother is probably evil and somehow tied to everything going on. As far as this ep goes. I may go to hell for writing this but Hayden Panetierre's got a "splat" face. For the love of God, please don't make me explain that. The girl next door is a gov't agent. It's so obvious. That wiretapping guy gets the award for the worst evil Gov't spook pretending to be service laymen ever. That scene was so unitentionally funny. The mail man from "Three Days of The Condor" is somewhere spinning in his grave right now.

    by russman

but the one reason why I don't mind the brooding is because these are regular people who are living regular 9-5 lives and they all have their individual problems, concerns or just want to fit in and now, at first glance, they have something else that can make their life harder. Last thing big brother wants is to be seen as a freak or have a family of freaks right before the election. Dark Side girl has a mob guy she borrowed money from to pay back and a kid to raise and a husband/boyfriend/sperm doner who's on the run to worry about, Future Painter guy is a drug addict and isn't painting the art he wants to paint but something else that he's not even conscious of, WolvieGirl just wants to be popular and suck off the hunks at school (like who's going to bang me if they know I can't die), Mind Reader Cop just wants to be a detective but can't pass the test (some of you may know why he can't, but I won't "spoil" it here - check out Greg's interview at 9thwonders.com). But also remember they're also just getting these abilities so once they wrap their head around then maybe they'll start to have some fun. Give it some time.

    What this show needs...

    by zarles

...is more money, mainly for special effects. A show like Lost was lucky enough to get a HUGE budget for its pilot, so its unfortunate that NBC wasn't so generous with this one. The blood/gore stuff looks great, (Brains! BRAINS!) and how they've visualized Hiro's abilities is pretty spot-on, but the flying? Not so much. That was some broke-ass Cirque Du Soleil action there. Hopefully this show will be successful in the ratings, cuz that just means more money to make it look better. I'll be watching with fingers crossed. Oh, and yes, Virginia - this show can be compared to Lost. In fact, a show like this probably wouldn't even exist if it weren't for the success of our friends out there on Fantasy Island...

Are you sure that middle america and some of the hicks on the coasts can handle a real international cast and watch a lot of people with brown skin (who are not shucking and jiving and telling mama jokes) week after week? Hell, Warner Bros wants most of the kids at the WORLD BATTLE SCHOOL for the Ender's Game movie to be white. So yeah, I agree with you with approx 1.5 Billion Chinese and approx 1.3 Billion Indians - most of the people in the show happen to be White. However, if you look at the professor's map, there were pins all over the world... and to stick up for the writers, they're just telling the stories of the individuals who will be helpful to take on some event in NYC. However, I don't think Americans can take to much brown skin on TV and on the flip side they do have a White woman with a mixed child so there's some TV progress... right?

Thus is not hot. Herc's 10-year-old-boy fantasy of Exposition Indians's neighbor friend is not hot either. Ali Larter's face is quite attractive as is Keira Knightley's, but they both amount to pretty heads on a stick. Meaning, they carry nothing but base, testosterone interest. What keeps me watching is the utter whimsey and joy of Hiro's character. All along he's loved what he's become and now carries the weight of its responsibility, all with (literal) comic book overtures. Love it! DC's "Millenium" here we come!

I don't think she can be easily compared to Hulk, Phoenix, or even Jekyll and Hyde. I think in fact, she is always powerful, but she can't deal with it psychologically, so she's split into two separate personalities. Like someone else said, the powered personality is all about fight and flight, self-preservation at any cost, no moral compass about it. I believe in the end we will discover that the bodies in the desert are well deserved to be there, dark as that concept may be.

"so she's split into two separate personalities." That would make her more than similar to the Hulk. That said, I don't think she 'hulk's out' per se, but I certainly do think she shrugs off all conscience during her episodes and becomes akin to a se7en killer/architect with mirrors acting as her visions into the memory of her other personality. Way intrigued, I have to say. Hulk is my favorite comic hero, so very way looking forward to the new superhero spin on this antihero archetype.
