THE COBRA EVENT coming to theaters'

Published at:  Feb 10, 1999 9:39:19 AM CST

Well folks, looks like we have a new project to keep our eyes out on, so if ya find out anything, let me know alrighty? Cool. Here's what we have so far...

Just a little movie news I came upon, that I thought you might want to put up on your
site.

The book "The Cobra Event", by Richard Preston (he also wrote The Hot Zone) is to be made
into a movie. I learned this from a comment the author posted on Amazon.com. Out of curiousity,
I emailed him (his address is given on Amazon) and he wrote back saying that Julia Roberts was
currently "chasing" the main role.

For the uninnitiated, The Cobra Event is a sci-fi thriller in which CDC scientists along with the
FBI rush to contain a man-made plague that has broken out in New York City. Sort of
"Outbreak-meets-Seven". It's a great novel and would make one hell of a movie. As yet, though,
it's not listed on the IMDb and Richard Preston didn't mention whether a director was attached.

Outbreak-meets-Seven? who cares?! I'm still waiting for Pretty Woman-meets-Out of Africa! And while we're on the subject, when does The Graduate 2 come out? In fact, why dont we throw the names of all our favorite movies in a hat, pick out two at a time, and PRESTO!--new ideas! golly, i sure am a sharp one. i wonder if those hotshots in Hollywood have thought of copying other movies yet...

The Cobra Event was not a very good book IMO. The story is nothing new and rather cliche (but then hollywood seems really into those characteristics lately).

I'm not particularly surprised it is being shot though, it is such a blatent flirt with Hollywood (rookie female heroine, nerdy semi -love interest, insane lunatic who wants to destroy the world, and lots of mean frenchies) that I got the feeling Preston wrote it just to get the movie contract he missed out on with "The Hot Zone" (do to that Hoffman monkey movie).

This project is being developed by FOX. They've acquired the rights and production will be underway soon. They're shooting for 1999, but 2000 is most likely. No casting decisions have been made yet.

D'OH!! I guess I lost it after it was like GODS MUST BE CRAZY but the coke bottle is a television. Actually, I kind of like my version of the ad-lib better - whattayou think?! Huh? Julia Roberts in a QFF scenario - aw, it would never get past the ratings board.
