First production stills come out for HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX, including a look at Umbridge!!!

Published at:  Sep 25, 2006 12:56:37 PM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here, newly arrived from London where I visited a top secret set, but you'll never ever in a million years guess which one it is until I can write about it next July. Strangely enough, I arrive back (a day late thanks to Washington Dulles, Chicago's retarded airport and United fucking Airlines) and see that pictures have come out from HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX, printed in a newspaper called The Scotsman. I was informed by "Pam" that Potterhead fan site HPANA.com had a scan of the paper. I don't know if they originated it, but it's where I saw it first. Check out the pics below for your first glimpse at Umbridge, Harry facing down another nasty Dementor (not pictured) and another look at Evanna Lynch as Luna Lovegood!!!

I don't recognize what he's directed, and the director has made the difference with these movies. Azkaban is the weakest book in the series, but is my favorite movie of the bunch, due to Cuaron. As long as they keep the main cast together, any movie released with the name Harry Potter is pretty much guaranteed to gross $700-$900 million worldwide regardless of who's directing. If the grievous mistakes of the last two films didn't drive the audiences away I doubt anything will at this point. Financially speaking, the series is on idiot proof autopilot.

    The books have gotten

    by timbenzedrine

The books have gotten longer, but the truth is, in the case of 'Order of the Phoenix' most of the story could be easliy compressed, as most of the "action" takes place at the end. Out of all of the books so far, this one looks like it would be the easiest to adapt. 'Halfblood Prince', on the other hand, is mostly flashbacks and then it has a real downer of an ending. I can see them having trouble making that one work. as for recasting some characters, I was sure they were going to recast the guy that plays Draco after he shot up to about six feet in the middle of the third movie. (I don't know, I always envisioned Malfoy as being shorter than Harry.) Oh, and Emma shouldn't worry about all the online pervs on the net, they'll leave her alone as soon as she turns eighteen. Do you hear any of these social misfits drooling over the Olsen Twins anymore? So cheer up Emma, you're going to grow up someday, and when that happens you'll be cast aside for some other nymphet.

    Idiotproof autopilot... guaranteed gross...

    by mr gorilla

I've got to disagree with you Excalibur... It's ALWAYS possible to screw up a franchise. In terms of worldwide gross, Matrix Reloaded made $735; Matrix Revolutions made $424. MI2 made $545; MI3, though generally recognised as being better, only made $395. It's quite possible that, having paid to see a Harry Potter film every other year since 2001, people will feel bored of the franchise, and prefer to move on to Narnia, or Pirates. And remember that the kids who loved Harry Potter aged 10 are now 15... growing the films up with them in terms of 'darkness' is a gamble as it risks cutting out the family audience. And the heavy reliance on flashbacks in Book 6 will have to be handled very carefully... Batman Begins showed that duel timescales can work in a blockbuster, but I imagine they put a fuck of a lot of work into it.
The longevity masterplan with HP seems to be to make each film more 'real', more emotional (could hardly have been less emotional than the first 2: look how shit-scared Harry is of the Dragon in 4, then see how unphased he is by the huge snake/Basilisk in 2), and more violent - a bit like when they had that 'Bond Bleeds' campaign for License to Kill. What do you reckon, are they on the right tip?

The Potheads/Potterphiles whatever they call themselves will never be happy...two movies to make sure they get every little bit and then a delay.

Remember the shitstorm which occurred when they published the list of what was not going to be in the GOF movie?

If there was a movie which could benefit from the split, it would be Order of the Phoenix...you could bludgeon someone with it.

And, M. Night Shamalyan has given several interviews about how he would "protect" Half-Blood Prince, or the seventh movie...I would hope, but after the blurbs of I Am Legend which have been revealed here...it's kind of hard to see the beam of sunshine reflected off a dried piece of shit.

ROBE, I quite enjoyed the movie version of Narnia.

    by excaliburffolkes

It completely flew in the face of modern popular cliches about what a good fantasy film should contain. Particularly since the filmmakers wisely eschewed the idea of turning it into a darker film. Not every fantasy picture telling an end of the world struggle between good and evil needs to be be set in a decaying wasteland of permanently shrouded greys and blacks, populated by psychologically conflicted morally confused characters. Instead, Narnia dared present genuinely good stable characters defending a beautiful lush kingdom, and the result was a powerful cinematic breath of fresh air. Hopefully the filmmakers stick to their guns and maintain this approach through the subsequent sequels. If they do, the rest of the series should do quite well. I haven't read the original C.S. Lewis books, so I am not in any position to evaluate whether or not the movie was a good adaptation of them.

Yes, Mr. Gorilla, it is always possible to screw up...

    by excaliburffolkes

...a movie franchise through gross incompetance or wholesale changes to the plotline, however, some movie franchises have far more inertia and resilience to those things than others. This is especially true of movie franchises with longer pre-defined story arcs that fans get wrapped up in (as opposed to open ended franchises like Batman, Die Hard, Mission Impossible, etc. where each film basically repeats the same basic plot every time around). Take Star Wars for instance. The prequels were underwhelming in most every aspect except possibly special effects, yet each film continued to make huge money at the box office regardlessly. Why? Because thanks to the original trilogy a gigantic chunk of the audience was committed to seeing the story all the way through to its conclusion of the birth of Darth Vadar and the empire no matter what. Another example is the Lord of the Rings. Once the first movie proved entertaining, thanks to the books, it was a slam dunk that huge numbers of people would turn up in the theaters for the sequels to follow Frodo all the way to the fires of Mt. Doom. The Harry Potter franchise is the same way. Thanks to the books a whole heap of fans are already invested in seeing all seven films through to the final Harry/Voldemort showdown, and will do so unless an outright artistic catastrophe dissuades them. Assuming the filmmakers at Warner Brothers don't go completely insane they is no way they can screw the franchise up money-wise. As long as they keep the films going like they currently are (same cast, big production budget, at least minimally competant directors, and a story that more or less follows J.K. Rowlings books) the audience is virtually guaranteed to show up to the tune of the $700-$900 million a pop that the last three films have grossed. The audience is already emotionally involved and committed to seeing the rest of the films, even before they are made. That's the power of franchise inertia. That is why I say the Harry Potter series is financially on idiot proof automatic pilot. It would be mind boggling if the rest of the films didn't have box office numbers similiar to the first four.

    by justcheckin

1 - If you are 25 or older, you would probably have a better chance with Emma Watson's mom. You are probably closer to her age as well.

2 - I agree with Kizeesh about book 5 being a really large amount of plot to crush down into a normal length movie. There is a lot going on at the beginning that sets up the characters in the story before they even get to what is happening at the school. I would hate to be the one to have to sort that out.
