Joel Silver is excited... about THE MATRIX

Published at:  Feb 09, 1999 4:50:17 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here. Now I just hate this. Ya see, I'm one of them Keanu bashers, I love to walk around bashing Keanu at every chance I get (though never for his amazing work in the pair of brilliant BILL AND TED journeys), so it is with much trepidation that I say.... I'm looking forward to MATRIX. The WACHOWSKI Brothers are, in my mind, one of the coolest pairs of brothers out there. I loved BOUND, and their script for THE MATRIX just kicked so much ass it wasn't even funny. But they cast Keanu... and my heart sunk, but dammit this latest trailer (download the 8meg new trailer here) on top of that older trailer just has me frothing at the mouth. BUT IT'S WARNERS!!! But ya know... 'it can't rain all the time' and maybe... just maybe the Wachowski's have finally pulled off what just about no other director in the world has done, and that's to create a perfect comic book movie. If you look at that trailer, you'll see single frames and shots that look like they came right out of a Steve Ditko or Jack Kirby comic.... while others seem to scream Jim Lee or Todd McFarlane. The look seems to be that of John Woo meets Alex Proyas meets something new. I HOPE THIS ONE WORKS!!! Anyway, here's an account of bumping into Joel Silver last night, and what this geek got out of it...

Alright, here's a bit of news for everybody. I went to the Message in a
Bottle premiere tonight and had the great fortune to meet and speak with
Joel Silver. I informed Joel that I had just seen the new preview for The
Matrix. The two minute trailer that plays before Payback. I told him that
it just totally blew me and my friend away. If you haven't seen it, the
special effects are AWESOME.

Here is where it gets so cool. He was so excited about this movie that my
friend and I couldn't even get a question in. He was like a little kid who
just got a new toy and wanted to tell you everything about it, but wouldn't
let you hold it. He went on and on how we haven't seen anything yet in
terms of what the final effects shots are going to look like. He said that
the shots they are working on now are twice as good as the one's in the
trailer.

He spoke with such passion and love for making movies. It was awesome. He
is really in it for the love of just making people's mouths drop. He said
that Die Hard was his favorite, but that the Matrix might soon take that
title, because what he is doing is so ground breaking. He spoke about the
Workowski brothers (I don't think I spelled that right) who doing alot of
the effects as we speak in Sydney Australia and how every day, he is just
more and more blown away.

I can't describe how much he is really psyched for this film. He said that
these effects are going to be the best effects that most people will have
ever seen. I then asked him when does it come out? Thinking that if it was
after May 21st, then what he just told me was complete shit. But he said it
would come out on April 2nd, so we are ok. I am really excited to see this
movie.

Sincerely,

Corky

Downloaded the new trailer last night. Looks absolutley fantastic. Great (really great) special effects, looks like there's some Woo style shoot-outs (always a plus), fight scenes choreographed by Yuen Woo Ping (same guy who directed Iron Monkey with Donnie Yen), and it's all courtesy of the brutha's who brought us that too good to be true thrilla', Bound. I really can't wait for this one. See you folks in line . . .

  • I have to say the Joel Silver is back on a HOT STREAK. First he did LETHAL WEAPON 4, which KIKCED ASS, especially with Jet Li. Now he gives us THE MATRIX. He also has a new Jet Li film in the filming stages. This is the guy who will bring me the long awaited SGT.ROCK film with SCHWARZENEGGER as THE ROCK. Silver, I know you are reading this, so get a green light on Helgeland's KICK ASS violent action riden SGT.ROCK script and get Arnold to lead the war against the Nazi's. I know some of you FAGGOTS out there are sick of me talking about this film so I will shut up about it for now (Harry, did you get my email yesterday???). Now that Silver has THE MATRIX, he is up there again with Jerry Bruckheimer. I hope Silver and Bruckheimer make a action film together and give James Cameron the directing chores. FANTASTIC FOUR anyone. Let the reply's begin...

    matrix music

    by free flying soul

for those of you who have seen the new trailor, does anybody recognize the music near the end (female voices)? Is that new music or just taken from another flick like they often do before the movie music is completed?

    T2, True Lies, The Matrix

    by jsg

I just saw the full trailor to The Matrix last night and let me say this movie is going to KICK ASS like no other movie. The best action movies out their are True Lies, T2 and Blade. I"ll also put in that kick ass Bruce Willis movie Die Hard and Die Hard 3. I'm thinking that The Matrix could take them all out. Judging by the preview this movie is going to be very fun.

I don't mind anyone cussin' up a storm, but could the little boys on the board please stop calling everyone who disagrees with them a FAGGOT. As a faggot myself, I find it slightly offensive. Couldn't you just call them ASSHOLES or something not offensive to an entire group of people. Thanks... and grow up.

    "Don't get excited!"- Han Solo

    by l'auteur

Warner Brothers? Keanu Reeves? Let's not get our hopes too high, mm-kay? and LaneMyers, can you please name these so-called "kick-ass flicks" that Keanu has been in? I must have missed them. other than MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO, hes got nothin'! sure, BILL & TED was a cult classic. SPEED was cool for about a week, and DRACULA would have been even cooler if Keanu was not in it. but other than that, his repetoire sucks.

    Silver on Exchange

    by trebster

JOEL SILVER may be back on board the good ship DIE HARD. My script is currently in competition with that of the week Ron Bass' Tears of the Sun and a treatment based on a novel. Rumours have it that Joel is interested in taking on the 4th installment of the Die Hard franchise. He left after Die Hard 2: Die Harder. - Suggestions have been made that movie 4 will be titled Die Hard On Exchange. - Come on Joel, get back into gear and give Jerry a run for his money once more!!!

Joel Silver can't carry a film alone...

    by cavatica

Joel Silver...back in the 80's, that name was tied heavily with the Lethal Weapon series, as well as with the Die Hard ones. Both were definately great. However, just because it has Silver's name on it (or that cool Silver Pictures logo at the end of every film), it doesn't mean that the film will be a bonafide hit.It should be noted that he also produced such grand films as Xanadu, way back in the late 70's; Hudson Hawk, which wasn't too grand...and who could ever forget Cindy Crawford's "Fair Game"? Sure, having Silver's name up there means a lot, but unless the writers and directors are there to back up with some great work, "The Matrix" isn't going to go very far. That's my 2 cents.

    The old Warners is gone!!

    by maul99

I say this with slight trepidation.....but I think that the old Warners is gone. They are finally letting filmmakers make the films without letting those marketing f***ers mess with the script. This year is going to kick ass for them. With Matrix, Eyes Wide Shut, The Green Mile and others.....watch out for Warners. The trailer for Matrix absolutely kicks ass. It looks like Keanu's acting skills may have been refined a little, but...........WHO CARES!!! I mean, the movie also has Laurence Fishburne and the extremely hot Carrie Anne-Moss. This is hands down my most anticipated action/adventure/fantasy film after Episode I.

Matrix Trailer Music - Where is it from?

    by cavatica

I'm wondering about that too, the music in the Matrix trailer. I know that I heard it in another film some years ago, but I'm unable to place it. If the film's soundtrack sounds half as good as the trailer, I may just pick it up, like with the music from Romeo & Juliet: Vol. 2 used in the Fight the Future trailer. If anyone knows, please mention it. Thanks.

    JOEL SILVER IS A PRICK

    by chi-town

gimme a break...Silver is a used cars salesman (anyone remember FAIR GAME)...please...this is all WACHOWSKI's and their efx people...let's hope Warner's isn't allowed to give any notes...but Joel Silver is part of the late 80s hollywood cocaine excess (movies such as RICOCHET, LETHAL IV is great???, and FAIR GAME)...he's a fat sadistic fuck who should go back to his first job driving Rudin's limo...

but then again maybe i sound bitter as an ex-employee who was fired because the coffee was too cold....f joel

    The music is from....

    by nc-17

The music heard on the end of the trailer is from the Enigma album "The Cross of Changes". The track is called "The Eyes of Truth". That section of the song was also used in the "The Long Kiss Goodnight" trailer. It's awesome! oh, and so is the trailer.

that trailer must have had subliminal messages...

    by mia006

I mean, I can't stop thinking about it since I downloaded the trailer last night. The phrase "what is the matrix?" keeps running through my head. It's driving me insane. During school I almost blurted out that line, just barely catching myself. As for Mr. Reeves and his kick-ass movies, here they are. He was good in Speed, give him that. I personally didn't like Point Break, but he did okay in that too. And let's not forget The Devils Advocate. Now this movie scared the crap out of me and I hated it on a moral basis, infact I'm never going to watch it ever again. But Reeves did very well in it.

    by diablo

ok, Keanu's history largely sucked, but I think you're all forgetting Point Break....he was perfect in that film.

I know what you mean about the "Matrix" being stuck in your head too...there's this dance tune called "Enter the Matrix" here in the uk, with this robot's voice just chanting the phrase over and over, and ever since I watched the trailer, I've had that song banging around my brain.

oh, that was only 2 points

    "Who is..", "What is" films...

    by cavatica

Personally, I must admit that I'm a fool for these "Who is..", and "What is" types of movies. Until the movie actually comes out, the question just tends to roll around one's mind like a wicked Zen riddle. The best example of that was "Who is Keyser Soze?", from the Usual Suspects. Everyone asked about it, and those who knew dragged along their friends to spread the buzz around. Darkman was a so-so example, but still a good movie nonetheless. Until the Matrix premieres, the question will be hanging in the air....unless I happen to read the comic it's supposed to be from. Here's to hoping we'll run into a trailer question that reads..."What is the Darkness?" sometime in the near future. That's my 2 cents.

There is a spot in hell reserved for Keanu...

    by da' wizard

To all those who insist on defending his body of work, give me a break! Point Blank and the Bill & Ted flicks were good, but how much of a stretch were these films, acting-wise??? Keanu is one actor who SHOULD be type-cast in the interest of film making... hearing Shakespeare delivered in valley-speak is so grating on the nerves I shudder to think about it. And even though Gibson's formulaic script can shoulder a good portion of the blame in how piss-poor Johnny Mnemonic was (I'm a huge fan of his work, but the man should seriously give up writing screenplays; I thought his X-Files script sucked too, but I digress), I point my finger equally at the "Keanu is, as Keanu does." performance from its lead.
My opinion on his acting probably won't stop me from seeing The Matrix (yes, the trailer looks good, and when I hear that a director has that much excitement about a project, I can't help but share in the excitement), but I hope I'm not setting myself up for a disappointment.

Keanu Reeves has already done Shakespeare. He played Don Jon(sp?) in Kenneth Branaugh's "Much Ado About Nothing". And he played Hamlet on stage. Both were done very well.
