Moriarty’s Three Strange Days Part One: UNACCOMPANIED MINORS and SHOOT ‘EM UP Teaser, With Teasers!

Published at:  Oct 23, 2006 5:50:11 AM CDT

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

Every now and then, when you’re juggling your schedule, things fall together in a way that sounds fun until you actually begin doing it, at which you point you realize it’s just going to be exhausting more than anything. Earlier this year, Warner Bros. asked me if I’d like to visit the set of Paul Feig’s UNACCOMPANIED MINORS in Salt Lake City. I’m a fan of Feig’s work, and I really wanted to see what he was up to, but at the same time, New Line asked me if I wanted to go to Toronto to see Clive Owen working with Paul Giamatti in SHOOT ‘EM UP. Again... that sounded cool to me, and I found myself struggling to get the two trips to work out in terms of timing. Finally, I put New Line and Warner Bros in touch with each other and asked them to figure it out. The resulting schedule made my trip the strangest three days I’ve spent in a row this year, and I’ll be bringing you the full blow-by-blow (and this is Hollywood we’re talking about, so that could me anything) over the course of next week.

Before that, though, I want to point you to some teasers that popped up for the two films online this week. First up, there’s the official Warner Bros. trailer for UNACCOMPANIED MINORS. You can just right-click and "save as" for any of these that you want to see:

The impression I got is that Feig’s making something like the films John Hughes made early in his directing career. Smart comedy with young leads. I think the trailer’s pretty confident, but I think Feig’s got some stuff up his sleeve that he doesn’t really even hint at there. We’ll get into that next week with the first of the set reports.

SHOOT ‘EM UP is a whole different sensibility, and what I saw of this one makes it look like one of next year’s most deranged films. Next year, Vern may die of joy at all the badassery we’ll see in films like 300 and this one. Hardcore blood and guts badassery on an epic scale. This entire film is one long crazy action sequence with Clive Owen and Monica Bellucci protecting a newborn infant from Paul Giamatti and his army of goons who are all trying to kill the child for some secret reason. It was a great read as a script, fast and funny and completely upfront about its own ambitions.

This promo reel that was posted by the guys over at Latino Review is our first taste of how the film itself is going to play, and it’s a nice one. Again, though... I don’t think this is really indicative of the finished film. I think if you like this, you’re going to love what you’ll see when it’s done. I’ve got a lot of stuff from my time on this set, including a random Guillermo Del Toro sighting, extreme injury on my part, and a face-to-face with producer Don Murphy.

It’ll be fun stuff all next week, so I’ll see you back here then. Tonight, I’ve got reviews of two of this week’s new releases, and I’ve also got pieces brewing about INFAMOUS and THE DEPARTED and LITTLE CHILDREN, so there’s plenty to talk about if I can just get it all finished and posted.

This is some interesting stuff, after watching the trailer for Shoot 'Em Up I'm eagerly anticipating it. Loved the little bit they did with 007 at the end, as a play on the Clive Owen rumors about Bond.

    Unaccompanied Minors will be great...

    by danielkurland

because of George Michael Bluth and that "Ask me about my weiner" kid, honestly, the ridiculous hand motion he did while he said that shows great comedic talent!

    Serious Injury + Don Murphy...

    by flummage

...and they weren't connected, Mori? :o

I guess that's where the strangness comes in. Or, in true Tale fashion, but only the beggining of further things to come...

I'll get my Talkback SnuggleDown Gown, a cup o' Coca, and settle in for this one I thinks...

    wrong movie, Kurland

    by thebige

Did you watch the trailer? It's a "tweens stuck in an airport" movie, with Wilmer Valderamma as some security guys. Looks like crap. The Michael Cena movie is something different. And.... "Shoot em Up" looks good. But why do they have to put the baby in danger? Not good - I won't be able to drag the Mrs. to this one.

    SuperBad or Parental Guidance Suggested...

    by thebige

are upcoming Michael Cera (George Michael Bluth) movies, but SuperBad has Jonah Hill, the fat guy from the eBay store in 40 year old Virgin, in it. Those sound decent - Unaccompanied Minors doesn't, though it does feature Lewis Black.

    SHOOT 'EM UP

    by harry weinstein

The trailer for SHOOT 'EM UP looks a bit like someone saw the epic final newborn-baby-in-danger battle sequence of TIME AND TIDE and decided to expand it to feature length. This may or may not be a bad thing.

Trailer didn't work on my computer, and I got Apatow and Feig confused. But yeah, all right, I'm much less anticipating this movie than the one I thought it was.

I'm guessing that Vern will not love 300

    by eraser_x

I can't believe Moriarty said that Vern would like the "badass" movie 300. 300 does not seem Badass at all. 300 seems like the kind of thing that some people would colloquially (sp?) call "gay", no offense intended to gays. And Vern didn't even like Sin City, because Sin City was also not very Badass. Sin City is a nerd's view of Badass; it is pretty much the opposite of any Clint Eastwood Badass movie.

Swell dude? Heard he's one wackeedude. Overweight, bad haircut, bad complexion, with a lisp to boot...any wonder why he always comes off a tad defensive? Face it, man had to become a producer just to be in a room with a vagina.

Shoot 'Em Up trailer not very good

    by neo zeed

I hope the action is better in later clips, because John Cena's The Marine is looking better than that.
