ERAGON trailer hits online...

Published at:  Sep 15, 2006 2:28:49 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here. I love dragons. Ever since I first saw 7th Voyage of Sinbad... I've been a dragon junkie. Perhaps my second biggest let down in the history of AICN had to do with DRAGONHEART, which I so wanted to be a great film. I was so stoked for DRAGONHEART - and when that flaming turd shat in my eyes - I was furious. Cuz... man, dragons are cool. DRAGONSLAYER was badass! But DUNGEONS & DRAGONS was awful, "throw me the rod" indeed Mr. Bluelips! Now - Peter Jackson has announced some dragon series that Quint loves - and I have to say - I'm going to purposefully not read those books so I can just let them happen to me. The last "Dragon" series I read was the DRAGONRIDERS OF PERN series. And I heard from most of my fantasy literature junkies, that the books that this Fox series is based upon were just shit. Cliche after cliche. And it is Fox - which all of you know, I'm employed by the Democratic Party to hate on at every turn. But as cheesy as this trailer is... I want this ERAGON thing to be fun.

First off - there's that blonde kid from the old animated DUNGEON & DRAGONS tv series that I loved. He's got the power bow and everything. Then there's the dragon with scaly feather formation wings. And Jeremy Irons and John Malkovich. And costumes recycled from one of the greatest cheese sword and sorcery flicks ever made... SWORD AND THE SORCEROR. Just be fun. Please - just be fun.

    by thoreau

I'm sorry, but does anyone else here think that Eragon and especially Eldest were both actually excellent books. Yes, its well trod territory, but these were engrossing gripping books, and the character of Saphira is intelligent and well thought out, and their relationship is good. I have very high hopes for this film...

    by doc_strange

With the dragon acting stupid and not dragonly at all. What made matters worse was that it seemed Sean Connery was hamming it up to the ninth level. Other than the dragon, the movie was actually pretty good. Maybe if the dragon didn't talk so much or at all and didn't look so cartoony, it might have been a good or even great film.

    by hargon27

If you want to read the book, instead just take the movie Star Wars and change all of the characters names. Instead of "the force" just cut-and-paste "dragon power" in its place and instead of "flys in a spaceship" write "flys on a dragon".
The book was uninspired shit and this movie looks like it was made for the Sci-Fi channel.
Oh, and Harry is right. Dragonslayer is a great dragon movie.

    the Inheritance trilogy

    by staldo

I agree that Eragon reads like it's being narrated by Napoleon Dynamite, like it's this self-deluded kid talking as if he's enlightening the masses to a wet-dream type world of phallic dragons and she elves, with none of the conscientious, war-weary story complications of LOTR or a sophmore Civics class. The names are barely disguised bastardized Tolkien as well. Like Neverending Story, this kind of book caters to the bedwetting, notebook scribbling child at the heart of all fanboys, which is why the movie will kill at the box office.

    by retlaw kciuq

Between that and the final one sheet that is a complete ripoff of the one for the Goblet of Fire last year, the movie's drowning in the fantasy pool. I'm just not impressed. Though that Bond trailer is kickass!

I like dragons, almost as much as I like dinosaurs. This dragon, however looks a bit too friendly to me, it lacks the character that the reign of fire one had. This one looks a bit of a snake skin labrador. Does he fetch in the movie, or lick his balls I wonder? A kid's movie for sure, hopefully Peter Jackson will do something more interesting with his Napopleonic take.

    by reelheed

I really liked the look of this in general. However there were a couple of points which worry me. 1st you can tell the good guys from the bad by the fact that they are CLEAN and HANDSOME/HOT. 2nd the final battle takes place inside a city. Dragons fighting inside a city should equal tonnes of environment damage which I'm not seeing in the trailer. Also being in a city means there cant be any hair raising wides a la ROTK. Which is just a shame as the only reason I can see for having set a film in the medieval past is to use the idea of the clashing hordes. But here it looks like the BAD ARMY stride into their fate pretty much single file. And there's only about 30 of them. Other than that.. Yay dragons!

    Dungeons and Dragons Part Deux

    by halfluck1

I remember in an interview after the first DND movie came out, Jeremy Irons said (and I'm paraphrasing): Sometimes you take a part because you are drawn to the character. Sometimes you want the challenge of working on a particular project with a particular director. And sometimes you have to pay for your castle in Scotland.

I guess he and Malkovich just bought new castles...

Book, it came before the movie...

    by halfluck1

Two reasons this film has been made:
    1. Popularity of all young adult fantasy literature being turned into film franchises. Every production company wants their own Harry Potter or LOTR. (His Dark Materials, Chronicles of Narnia, Artemis Fowle all in development/production)
    2. Eragon was a New York Times bestseller. Of course it only sold because it hit in-between HP new releases. (So many bad books have sold a lot because they have been heralded as "a fantasy book to keep your child reading in-between new HP releases.) And it was the fact that he was fifteen when he wrote the first one.

The only people I've found who like the book are my adolescent students.

there wasn't much in this trailer that really "wow"d me. Stock audio effects for the dragon. Sounds like they took sounds from the Aliens in "Aliens" and pasted them over the dragon. I'm going to avoid this movie unless is miraculously scores a 90%+ on Rotten Tomatoes. The book read like it was written by a 13 year old. I had to dive into a Heinlein novel afterward just to wash away the overwhelming sense of vocabulary limitation. It was most cleansing. A pity.

    Harry, Read the Books!!

    by atomica

They're very easy reads, and although it's not completely original, Paolini owes alot of inspiration to LOTR, Dragonlance and Dragonriders of Pern...It's still a great Series that actually does have a few unique aspects and subplots. They're very easy reads as well, and unlike a series like Wheel of Time (which I love) the Inheritance Trilogy doesn't get bogged down in it's own History or Tangling plots. And I want to be very clear about this, speaking as a fan from the Eragon community: Although this movie On It's Own may be a fun romp, and a good diversion, it's already become apparent to us Shur'tugal fans that this Movie is nearly an abortion of the source material. Core Characters have already been totally altered...not for the best. (For example, the Lead Female, Arya is a Raven-haired Elf...Not a Blonde Human...and it has serious ramifications to the total story if that's the way the Movie stays) I'll still go see Eragon in the Theater, for I, like you have a desire to see a Kick ass Dragon Flick. Dragons fucking rule. But don't write off the books entirely. It's actually the best New Fantasy series i've read for quite awhile. I'd compare it to a melding of Dragonlance meets Harry Potter. If you like either, or both then you'll enjoy the Books. And if you haven't read Dragonlance, at the VERY Least, the 1st SIX Books in the Series then you shouldn't even comment on dragons whatsoever. :) They're Geek Essentials. Please Tell Me you've Read them...

    reign of fire is pwning

    by occula

i'm on that bandwagon...those dragons were definitely the best, even better than the black scary flying things in LOTR. this film is D&D2: Electric Boogaloo without a doubt. and yes, the kid wrote the books when he was 15, but what that actually means is he wrote some stuff, his parents, who are both teachers who home-schooled him, re-wrote the MSS and then they handed them off to a literary agent. so while i could forgive the limitations of an average 15-year old's imagination, i can't forgive the succession of people who engineered the release of the books and then executed this dogshit film.

    Well Technically.........

    by doc_strange

In Dragonslayer, Ulrich let himself be taken by the Dragon or Vermithrax, which I believe was its name. Having the magic amulet, Galen smashed it, thus destroying the dragon and Ulrich with it. So, technically, Galen was the dragonslayer, but for some reason, the king was officially pronounced as the slayer. I really wished they did a sequel to this so we see what kind of sorcerer Galen becomes. You just get a hint of it when he wills a horse to give him and Valerian a ride to their destination. Although, according to the film, I guess that was the last dragon in existence. Damn, I'm such a geek.

    Galbatorix

    by pwnedbystallone

I've actually read Eragon and Eldest and Galbatorix is not in either one of them. AT ALL. But I recognize that adapting the book to film it helps to have your baddie present from the beginning. The fact that Galabatorix has not appeared in the books has built up what will probably be a monumental dissappointment in the third book "Empire." Get it all three books are 6 letters long and begin with the letter 'e'. Anyway the books are VERY derivative but they are entertaining to read and easy to get into. They are very detailed in languages and magical power limitations and abilities. Not nearly to the extent as Rings though. Actually what will strike you after reading the two books is that so far the plot is almost a direct copy of Star Wars and Empire. It's pretty funny. I'm lookign forward to seeing if the third book matches Jedi. I'm looking forward to seeing this first movie as well. The trailer looks better than I expected.

Somebody needs to do the Pern dragons!

    by ninja nerd

While the Pern series has gone to hell recently with Anne "handing the reins" to Todd McCaffery, the original trilogy would be excellent on film. I seem to remember an attempt at a TV series a few years back, but it apparently never saw the light of day. And really, the books really need the attention and BUDGET of a movie studio, not UPN/WB/Fox, etc. Lessa and F'lar were great characters in the early books. F'lar needs an Errol Flynn type actor. Lessa...I don't know. The key thing, which probably "killed" the TV attempt, is the DRAGONS HAVE TO BE RIGHT. As for Eragon...shlock books = schlock movie; there ain't no fix for this turkey and I'd bet it dies a quick death.

The best dragon movie, and for that matter, dragon, is Dragonslayer. Remember, Bernafax Pajorative was old. When a dragon gets that old it knows nothing but pain, constant pain. It grows decrepit, pitiful...SPITEFUL. How is it that a movie released in the early eighties still has better effects than 99% of the movies released in this day and age? A total travesty, if you ask me.

Classic! 3) This trailer for Eragon looks ok. I'm still not totally souped yet but a lot can change over the next 3 months. We'll see. 4) Yo Moriarty- where's that Seven Samurai analysis. ERAGON ripped off ANGUS WELLS and PERN!!!!!

    by fantasyfan

This is horrible, I mean does anything about this film seem go to you? Anyone check out the book? It's like one HUGE CLICHE! It's like Ender's game meets LOTR, some self-fullfilling crap. ANd ERAGON? That's like Aragorn, not even hiding the fact he ripped off the main character's name. The DungeonSiege movie trailer looked better than this crap.

And those of you not familar with the whole Fantasy Genra, THIS IS LIKE A DIRECT RIPOFF!!! Ok, I admit that Fantasy Novels tend to repeat the same storylines but this is going overboard. Ever read Lords of the SKy by Angus Wells? It's the same damn storyline except published years before ERAGON!!!! Not to mention the years AM has been at it with Pern. How about Dragon Princeby Melanie Rawn? There are literally hundreds of better NEWYORK BESTSELLING novels on dragonriders and they have the gall to pick this crap to build a movie around?

Now with J.Irons and John Malcovich part of the film, it's a sure thing this will tank.

Does look a big rip-off (esp the sun setting bit - how very luke on tatooine! minus a sun of course) but he put the effort in and got the reward. Whether it is the fantasy novel deserving to make a movie of though? maybe not. Lots better. Hell why not a David Gemmell novel, his heroes where at least believable, f*cked up occasionally and had good lines. Slightly Harry Potter, not super original but well done. Slight hints of Xena/Hercule production. Viggo went to the trouble of sleeping in his armour to make it look lived in (aka the star wars lived in universe look). Not like extras got it fresh out of the prop department (aka star wars prequel), which the baddies in this obviously suffer from. Looks decent, I will reserve judgement, could be entertaining.

I am not kidding when I say that every character, character name, place, event, and theme in Eragon can be found in these stories--without exception!

For a good chuckle, go to Amazon and read the 1-star reviews. Brutal. Then compare the age of those reviewers to the 5-star reviewers.

With that said, the movie is likely going to be better. It's GOT to be better...

    Dragons in Eragon talk but

    by drath

when their dialogue is childish and corny, you'd rather they'd just eat people. Seriously, the FX are the only good looking parts of this trailer. Mostly it looks like costumes and lighting from a Sci-Fi Channel movie. And the capper with Saphira chomping down on a knight looks lame. It's a dragon eating someone and it looks like a filler shot! That is no proper way to end a trailer. Draco lunging for the camera in the Dragonheart trailers was cooler. The only thing I will say for this movie is that Dragonheart's dragon plus Star Wars characters and villains seems like a good combination even if it is unoriginal. Sadly the book really is a by the numbers retelling of Star Wars with dull dialogue an unconvincing hero and a boring pace. So if this is a good movie, I'll be surprised. It's a shame that this is getting made but something like Prospero's Children is not. And why the hell is this already getting a trailer while John Carter of Mars isn't even cast?

Is there anyone else who likes Dragonheart?

    by yautja

I’m sure saying this is going to elicit a long string of replies to the tune of “you have no taste” “you’re an ignorant (insert random obscenity)” and “you’re stupid and your whole family is stupid” and many more imaginative insults to my character and intelligence based solely on my opinion of this film but I’m going to say it anyways. I love Dragonheart. I consider it the best dragon movie to date. I won’t argue the greatness of Dragonslayer or the lesser greatness of Reign of Fire, or the awful absurdity of D&D, but for me Dragonheart is the best. Maybe it’s because I was so young when it first came out but though I’ve grown older and more jaded I love that movie more now then I did when I was a kid. Perhaps it’s that child in me that keeps me from viewing it with the scrupulous and bitter eye of an adult. I love Sean Connery’s performance, the music, the characters, the story and above all, the dragon. The design is one of the most unique and original I’ve ever seen and the character performance is amazing. This was the first time since the advent of CGI that a dragon was realized using this technology and it remains one of the best. I simply don’t see how it is that everyone can hate this movie with such a passion. I’ve seen a lot of people talk about this movie as being riddled with cliché but I don’t see it, especially when compared to Dragonslayer which, while great, has the sorcerer, the brash young sorcerer’s apprentice, the princess and the girl who dresses as a boy. Though these aspects break from their respective patterns they are nonetheless present. And besides, by this point it’s not possible to have fantasy without some kind of cliché in it, because everything has been done already time and again. My point is that I just don’t see what it is that makes all of you hate Dragonheart so much and I’d prefer that you don’t reply with your reasons, be they valid arguments or pointless insults. I love this movie and if that makes me tasteless and ignorant I’d prefer to remain that way. I just want to know if there is anyone else out there who shares my view.

Why are they making a movie out of a crappy book which stole from the Pern books, when they haven't made a movie about Pern? How retarded ARE these Hollywood execs? Pern books would make wonderful movies. The relationship b/t the dragons and their riders was incredibly well done by Ms. McCaffery.

I too loved Dragonheart. My one problem was the villain. At no point did I ever feel that that fauntleroy looking sissyboy posed a serious threat to anybody with his "evil", despite his dragon heart. He reminded me of a hallmark TV movie villain. But Connery's dragon, and the interaction between man and dragon was humorous and touching and that theme music was pretty powerful. It still runs through my head as it was used for quite a few trailers for other movies, just like the crimson tide theme from Deep Blue Sea.(why did such a joke-based action movie get such a good orchestral theme?)

It looks rather formulaic to be honest...some kid shouts things, rides a dragon and lots of cgi armies...after Rings and Narnia, I wonder if audiences are gonna be all fantasy'd out to see another that happens to be part of yet another trilogy because let's face it every big film now has to be part of a 'trilogy'... though there doesn't seem to be an awful lot competing with it in December apart from Night At The Museum and Charlotte's Web as far as big family flicks go so maybe it has a chance...though I'm gonna say that Night At The Museum is gonna be the one that banks big this December.

I recently finished the first book, its painfully awful to read. Bad Dialogue, Mary-Sue characters, and the plot is absolutely a re-hash of Star Wars, even down to the "You're all clear kid!" moment at the end. What's worse is that the film looks alright, apart from the John Malkovich scenes which look like they were filmed on the set of a sci-fi channel tv show. I can't see the King of the world wanting to live in a craggy stone room with a huge fire beside him. Does look like the story has been altered (thank god) at least in the movie Sienna Guilleroy may spend more than the last 2 chapters awake. Also no Orc-ripoffs which suits me fine, but the army looks a bit keek. (why do all evil armies wear red cloaks in fantasy movies?)

    The problem with Dragonheart.......

    by doc_strange

Wasn't the fact that it had cliche's. I think they tried to do too much to please everyone, like kids in the audience with the dragon's hammy performance. It just didn't come off ferocious and scary like I would imagine a dragon to be. It came off almost slapstick cartoony in a sense which pulled me right out of the film. I n otherwords, this movie suffered the Jar Jar effect. I'm sure the flimmakers meant well but it came off cartoony and almost slapstick at times. Dennis Quaid's performance, however was the best in the film but it was like he was on another level and the film was two steps behind. Had the dragon been a little less friendly, and a bit more ferocious, and not had Connery's voice, with a lot less comedy, it could have actually been a great movie. Now that I think about it, Irons would have been a better choice instead. Another great choice would have been Michael Wincott with his already awesome gravelly voice. I think that would have catapulted the flim into greatness
