Patton Oswalt Gets His Wish!! THE WIRE Gets Season Five!!

Published at:  Sep 13, 2006 2:47:36 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Ratings for Sunday’s season premiere were weak, but reviews were strong to very strong, and HBO has given “The Wire” its fifth season.

There was a two-year layoff between seasons three and four; I’m guessing we’ll see season five in September 2008.

I couldn't agree with you more. As for Omar returning, that is indeed true. He was featured on the preview for the 3rd episode (HBO put the 2nd episode onDemand already!) I must say, this news elicited a fist pump and a "yes!" from me. The only bad thing is that we'll have to wait a while for it.

Just because the show's coming back, doesn't mean all those characters are. I just watched ep 2 the other night and it was awesome to see Weebay again. This news just made my day. I'll gladly wait another 2 years for this show to come back.

Yay! HBO execs finally get one right.

    by bobbyjoe

Omar's back next week...and you know who I hope we'll also see later in the season: Brother Mouzone, who kicks ass. Anyone know if he'll be back? I love that McNulty has virtually disappeared from the show, and its pretty much unnoticeable. Its a testament to how strong everything is... even the most minor characters are interesting and complex and can easily carry an arc (new favorite is nail gun woman... what's her name?) Even if Dominic West hadn't himself reportedly cut back on his appearances so he could pursue other projects, it's also appropriate to the structure of the show that McNulty disappear: remember the extended "Chess" metaphor from Season One? From the beginning, McNulty was set up as the Chess piece directly opposed to Stringer, so now that's Stringer's gone, it's kind of appropriate that McNulty's off the board, too. On another note: this week (if you're watching ahead on HBO on Demand), it was great to see a scene where Lt. Cedric Daniels was smiling and laughing and totally relaxed at home: a different side to his character than what we're used to. On a probable sadder note: God, every season on "The Wire" something terrible happens to a sweet soul who gets ground up in the system. I'm really worried about those kids! It's already almost too painful, cause you know something bad is gonna happen to at least one of 'em.

    My Life Is Now Complete

    by drtobiasfunke

I really was expecting HBO to kill their last great show by not going for a season five of The Wire. This news is something I've been waiting for since David Simon said he originally envisoned five seasons. Excellent job on recognizing the best show on tv HBO. I just hope that it will release next year as waiting for fall 08 would be terrible.

I haven't heard if Brother Mouzone is coming back or not but his team up with Omar last season was like the greatest super villain team up that Marvel or DC never produced. I was totally jonesing when I realized the two of them were going to get together and mess some people up. As for the accessability of this season, I totally agree. It's pretty easy to jump right in but there are just a ton of geek payoffs for those of us who've watched from the begining and I'd hate to deprive anyone of that. Watching Weebay talk about his fish, seeing Herc and Carver back at it again, watching Prez walk through that classroom door, Bubs taking on an apprentice, Lester screwing with the higher ups, Daniels laughing about it now that Lester's not under his command, McNulty in the uniform. It was all good.

there's nothing to fear in that sense- the "agreement" HBO made for Deadwood season IV was never official- never announced- it was a verbal thing that leaked out- no official HBO press release. The Wire season V re-up has been made official- you can even read the press release on HBO's webpage...

Wire has worse ratings than carnivale, yet it got renewed over carnivale. Plus, reviews for season 2 of Carnivale were pretty strong. I just don't get it.

This made my month. What a great show, underwatched but still watched by people like those posting their happiness on this board. To David Simon, Ed Burns, and all the cast and crew of The Wire and even those crazy ass HBO executives: thanks from one dedicated fan for staying strong and continuing to fight the good fight. It's not about race, it's not about the violence or the drugs--it's about the rage and the sharpness of the vision. Keep up the great work.

    Wire and Carnival

    by kronus316

    Novaman5000
The Wire costs much, much less to produce than Carnival and Deadwood which are period pieces so the costuming, sets, makeup, vehicles, horses and props are a lot more expensive to produce than the Wire, which is filmed in Baltimore with the support of the city. They don’t pay a fee for most of there sets because they get people to volunteer the space, the city provides police vehicles and things for the show. It’s really about money, they can spend more on a Sopranos or a Six feet under because they got huge syndication packages for them, but I doubt they will for Carnival, Deadwood or the Wire.

    ALSO

    by cocolopez

there's a good amount of cgi in Carnivale- and Novaman is a little bit off on his info- critical response to season II of Carnivale wasn't that good at all- it did have a small number of fans in the media world but it almost seemed an afterthought- and comparing it to critical response to The Wire is unfathomable- The Wire probably gets better across-the-board critical praise than any show that's ever existed. Your'e also forgetting that HBO offered Daniel Knauf the same kind of deal that was offered to David Milch- to finish up Carnivale in movie installments- Knauf refused. That said- and being a fan of both shows- I'll take The Wire over Carnivale any day. Don't get me wrong- there was plenty of reasons to love Carnivale- but there's like ten times as many reasons to love The Wire...

Why the Wire will never get good ratings

    by weebay

David Simon said it himself. White viewers in general won't look at a show that's majority black. They just won't. You would have thought that at least the first episode would have gotten good ratings considering the critical praise this show has gotten this season. If you tune in and don't like it that's one thing. But it wasn't even given a look by most people. Black viewers will look at all kinds of shows no matter what the racial make up of that show. I'm not saying that this is a matter of racism or anything. I just think most white viewers look a majority black show and think that it can't speak to them.

    HBO's four David's

    by cocolopez

Ever notice that HBO's four most brilliant creators are all named David? David Milch (Deadwood), David Simon (The Wire), David Chase (Sopranos), and Larry Fucking David (Curb)... What's up with these Davids?

It's good to see HBO back on track and respecting their properties again. Although their backs were against the wall with the pending final seasons of: Sopranos, Rome, Deadwood, and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Also Simon is working on a new HBO series about life in New Orleans after Katrina.

    Bunk

    by bobbyjoe

"Also Simon is working on a new HBO series about life in New Orleans after Katrina." That's great news, crackerfarmboy. Any word on if he'll get Wendell Pierce (who plays Bunk on "The Wire") as one of the stars? That would make a lot of sense-- if you've seen Spike Lee's "when the Levee Breaks" doc, you hear a lot from Pierce (who's a New Orleans native) about his family's experiences with Katrina. It sounds like he'd be perfect for the project, both onscreen and for research and character background. Plus, Pierce is simply a damn fine actor, another of about twenty "Wire" cast members who should have had Emmy noms by now.
