HAGEN!!!! Is Arnold's CRUSADE Going To Happen'
About 3 minutes ago I was at VARIETY.COM where I was reading a wonderful shot of adrenaline. It looks like there is a possibility that the financing might be being pulled together to make my personal pet fave unproduced project in the whole wide world. It was a script I read before I ever even had this site of mine. It is... singularly COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!!! The news is a bit vague, there are rumblings of movement, of deals. Nothing solid yet. It's one of those, "there might be a deal" thingees. Let us pray. May the movie gods look out over this film. May Mechanic and Rothman grant a limitless budget and directorial control to Paul Verhoeven (who, right now is not attached, BUT MUST BE SOON!!!!) and that we could see... in a single glorius breathtaking year CRUSADE and the first chapter of LORD OF THE RINGS!!!! That Poledouris will be signed INSTANTLY as the composer, that Ron Cobb is instantly signed as Production Designer with Frank Frazetta as the Art Director. I better stop before the drool level reaches the electrical outlet. If you wish to read the Variety story, click on the earlier link, it'll take ya right to it!!!!

Dear Sweet Jesus in a Jumpin' Birchbark Canoe!!! Does anyone know where I can get the script to this Ahnold epic?!?!?!
-
This movie must be made. It will be epic. After that, I wold love to see the Phenom "Arnold" make Conan the King. that will probably never happen though. Oh well, I will be happy with Crusade.
-
Dear above, you have heard erroneously. While the film is based on THE CRUSADES, that epic war between Christians and Muslims, instead of taking sides in the Holy War it reveals a bit of the hypocrisy on both sides, and I feel speaks volumes about the civility of medevial Muslim society. This film is not a GOOD GUY/BAD GUY foray. It's waaaaaaaay cooler than that. Be patient, God Willing (whichever denomination you will him/her to be), you'll see it on a screen near you.....Harry

I could really care less if this film ever gets made and I could care less if I never saw Arnold in another film again. He's a cro-magnon celluloid paperweight (albiet, a big paperweight) that really doesn't deserve his asking price (which has caused several films, including this one, to be put on the back-burner). Sure, T2 was a hit, but it wasn't because of him (special effects anyone?). He can just keep chunking out new Planet Hollywoods and waving his hands at their Grand Openings, as that doesn't require any acting chops. http://i.am/almostcool

If the film does show the muslims in a positive light as it should then good luck to it being made. Just as long as Hollywood doesn't screw it up and end up making some anti-islam rubbish. Frankly I'm more interested in Moustapha Akkad's Saladin and was wondering if it is getting made. Now if he is not worth making a film about than I don't know who is. So anyone heard the latest on that or was it just a rumour?

Although I haven't seen the script and only have an idea of what this is about from the messages here, I would love to see a movie about the crusades. However, if the subject material deals with hypocracy on both sides, and I am quite certain there was some, I really don't think Verhoeven should get his hands on this story. I would be less interested in seeing a bloody and brutal thriller like Starship Troopers and more interested in seeing something done in the style of Saving Private Ryan. Yes I know SPR was the bloodiest of them all, but this subject material is extremely important to be dealt with correctly and seriously. I even venture to compare the Crusades to the Holocaust on their level of grotesqueness and blindness. Same factors of obedience and a false sense of "What we are doing is *right*." I would like to see a story that shows how the New Testament has been converted into an excuse to go forth and subjugate. If this subject is going to be dealt with in the conan style, then to hell with it and all the moronic fools that want to see that type of garbage. That's just how I feel.

If Arnold was in a remake of ANNIE I would be the first one in line! The fact of the matter is his movies are consistently top of the mark... and CRUSADE appears to be no exception! Indeed it is a movie I have anticipated forever as it has been a pet project of his for years! I don't care whether it has racial overtones or not, you see there's this thing in America called Freedom of Speech and when it comes to movies nothing should be off-limits. I have never seen anything in a movie that would upset me or make me protest by picketing outside the theater while handing out flyers like people did at THE SIEGE. It's a damn movie guys...fiction?...ever heard of it? Gee..I hope the Hobbits and Dwarves of the world don't get all fired up over the LORD OF THE RINGS! Can you imagine the sight of hundreds of "vertically challenged people" throwing flyers at you on opening day? THE SIEGE was good, LOTR will be great, and CRUSADE will open up a can of whoop-ass on us!!! If ARNOLD's in sight...you MUST GREENLIGHT!!

Hmmm, I read the script and it rocked...but I felt that it could have some emotion to it (gasp!). Somehow I don't see Fr. Freeze being real (believably) emotional here. Not seeing it. I'd like Kurt Russell to kick some booty Snake Plisken style...but yet with the tragic emotion of a guy who loses everything and who's world gets shat on. Go Kurt!
-
This is wonderful news. "Crusade" is an action-packed, yet thoughtful script that is quite suited to Verhoeven's directorial style.
Remember: Paul Verhoeven is the best director in Hollywood. Anyone know what's up with "The Hollow Man?" Can't find the script. -
It's pretty silly to think that any movie purporting to resemble history in any way will be anti-Islamic. The Crusades were an unprovoked war of aggression, minstigated by Europeans and filled with unbelievable monstrosities. During the taking of Bethlehem over 40,000 (not an exagerration) citizens were put to the sword...citizens, not soldiers. Reports from priests on hand congratulated the knights on killing every woman and child infidel, as well as burning down the temple of the Jews with well over a thousand people inside. These are not opinions; they are facts. I am curious if anyone who has read Crusade could comment on whether or not the frequent war atrocities that occured are depicted.
On a side note, and I know people aren't going to like it, but Saladin's troops were generally much better behaved, clean, educated and (as far as records can tell) did not drink or rape as a general rule. After the slaughter of his citizens he stil offered amnesty and generous terms to the crusaders when the wars began going against them in the 2nd through 4th crusades.

Some here are sticking for the Christian side, others for the Muslims... the reality was different. One good thing that might come from this is that if the movie is historically accurate, it may induce people to learn more about the Crusades and debunk at least some of the myths along the way.
As to the facts. Until about the A.D. 500s all of North Africa, the Middle East, and large part of Africa (Sudan, and as far as Ethiopia), and Anatolia (what is now Turkey) were Christian, Eastern Orthodox, and Jewish in some of those places. This was the result of Christianity spreading through the Roman Empire. Arabs occupied only the Arabian Penisula.
Then Islam came about. And from late A.D. 500s onwards, the Muslims went on a Jihad with the purpose of spreading their religion and power with the sword. Convert, die, or be discrimnated against. Islams calls for a Jihad. The Muslims were quite successful, they managed in a short time to conquer an empire even larger than the Roman Empire used to be. None of it was ancestral Arab lands. They even managed to advance into Europe, Spain, Sicilly, Southern Italy, and the Balkans. In some places like for example Sudan, the Christians were exterminated in some very bloody ways.
The Crusades were stirred up because of the continuing danger of Muslim invasions into Europe indirectly, and directly because Christian pilgrims were no longer allowed to travel to the Holly Land. The aim of liberating Christians living in the Holly Land from the Muslims was also put forward. As usual politics were involved and different groups had somewhat different aims. The merchants wanted new trade opportunities, the nobles wanted new lands to rule. Greed and competition for the spoils of war among some of the participants resulted in frequent infighting among the Crusaders and weakened what they managed to militarly achieve. And the bloody attitude to war from that era meant a lot of casualties on both sides.
Still, for a time, part of the Middle East was recaptured from the Muslims, and Christian kingdoms were created. However, those were plagued both by Muslims and some adventurous knights who were not living there, but who came over for a holiday and had the idea that they could somehow hunt Muslims - this often destroyed what relations the locally living Crusaders managed to establish with the Muslims around them. In the end it led to constant war and the destruction of those kingdoms.
So the story of Crusades in a nutshel is like this: the newly emerged Muslims conquered lands they never owned, and converted with the sword both Christians and Jews. Those infidels who would not convert to the true Islamic faith were ground down through centuries of pressure and often viscious discrimination until very few of them remained. Meanwhile, during the time when the Muslims were threatening Europe, and for a whole stack of reasons, including great greed and ambition among some, Crusades were conducted, and were bloody. The Crusades failed mostly because of the infighting and hypocrisy among the leadership, and forever after settled the ownership of vast amounts of land.
Hmm... so who were the good and who were the bad guys? -
If there be movie gods, and we all know there are. Otherwise we would not have such films as The Blues Brothers, Braveheart and so on, then they really need to convene in their little heavenly movie god palace and come to the consensus that this movie MUST be made. There are no two ways about it. Okay...that's my two bits.

Paul Verhoeven directing a film about the Crusades? Perfect! Hundreds of thousands of oppurtunities for satire. To the comment about having someone other than Verhoeven directing I say this: The only other person who I would entrust this film to (the greatest film never made, IMO) is Stanley Kubrick. Paul is also on a hot streak-Starship Troopers was the greatest film ever. Ahnold as a midieval warrior is also very, very, cool. He must know now that he should make movies like Crusade and Ridley Scott's I Am Legend instead of crap like End of Days.

I read this a month ago and in my opinion it is HORRIBLE. A cliche every two pages, poorly written dialogue, and cardboard characters (especially the obviously thrown-in damsel in distress). The script is out there for regular people to read so try to get your hands on it and decide for yourself.
-
From what I have heard from other websites, the way this movie is being developed, it could turn out to be the most expensive movie ever made! More than Titanic!
-
I have yet to read this script so I have no idea.. but why is Arnold so important to this movie? The man cannot act.. period. He's big budget Segal with friends who actually write good scripts for him. Does the script call for a Conan-type? Arnold did that well because he has the build.. and had very little in the way of dialog. I know some of you will disagree.. and some will agree. I just can't see what is so special about Arnold. Maybe short bus special..

Isn't he the one who set a new low for book-to-film conversions? As far as I can tell, his most notorious trademarks are 1) painfully bad actors & actresses, 2) graphic violence that tries to push for shock value. Imho, not generally desirable expectations from this guy. Here's hoping he keeps away from any worthwhile projects.

Although it remains to be seen whether Crusade is anti-Islam or not, one thing is already well known....there are plenty of ignorant pricks like Stilgar around to demonise Islam with the lies of the Orientalists. It is well accepted (by Western academics) that Islam does not forcs anyone to convert and does not discriminate against non-Muslims. It is well documented (by Western historians) that the Crusaders were brutal in their treatment of their captives, not only killing and raping virtually everything in sight (remember Jerusalem and the accounts of streets running with blood and of horses splashing blood up onto their riders' leggings ) but even roasting Muslim babies on spits and eating them. There are hundreds if not thousands of books that have documented these facts.
Why do you people lap up the lies about Islam so readily? Try thinking for yourselves instead of letting CNN do your thinking for you. Do not judge Islam by the standards od un-Islamic regimes like Saudi and Sudan etc.
Crusade not anti-Islam? I'll believe it when I see it. -
CRUSADE is going to FUCKING ROCK, KICK ASS, continue the ULTRA VIOLENCE of Private Ryan and KICK ASS (opps, I already said that). This will be one of the greatest adventure films when it comes out. The script was so COOL. Arnold will rule as Hagan. END OF DAYS and CRUSADE will continue Arnold's comeback to serious action films. BATSHIT and ROBIN fucked up his career. It's time for Arnold to rule again. Harry, have you heard anything on WITH WINGS AS EAGLES lately? Thank god Arnold has some GREAT scripts up his sleeve.

The idea of Crusade, with its look into the complexities of the Christian/Islamic struggles during the Crusades, doesn't seem to mesh with the typical Arnold Schwarzenegger film. But then again, perhaps its time for Arnold to take his craft to another level. Also, because of the incindiary subject matter, it will need the clout of a Schwarzenegger to get it green-lighted since I'm certain the studios will fear a backlash against such a film. And rightly so, because there will be factions in both the Christian and the Islamic faiths that will attack this movie right out of the starting gate. And as history has proven, fundamentalist ire isn't something to be taken lightly. Then again, I'm probably painting too gloomy a picture. Lastly, am I the only person who, when thinking about Arnold in this project, is reminded of the beginning of The Last Action Hero where Arnold does his rendition of Hamlet, complete with assault rifles and cigar?

The board is somewhat screwed up, so I am not quite sure which message comes first and what is a reply and what not.
d625, or whatever, others, oh... until about eight years ago I had the same idea of Crusades as the rest of the people making rabid claims here. I suggest that rather than pouring your venom along with your ignorance here, you get a stack of books and read up on the subject. I also suggest that you try to read between the lines, and try to recognise books, opinions, passages, which have an axe to grind against one side or the other for whatever reason. Concentrate on facts, check those facts with other sources to decide their accuracy, make your own conclusions. Check my facts, what I claimed in my original post. I do not watch CNN, I do not support attacks against Iraq, I support the Iraqi people (minus Saddam), I think the sanctions should have gone a long time ago. However, the regimes in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Sudan, Pakistan, Egypt to a lesser extent, and I think just about every Muslim country and their discrimination against non-Muslims shows how in practice Islam relates to other religions. Name one Muslim country where things are different? Probably Iraq and Egypt are the best in this respect, but far from perfect. This may not be what Islam teaches, but it is still happening. -
Verhoeven and Schwarzenegger together again. This could be very cool. Remember Total Recall?
I think this is the best SF movie ever done.Crusade will rock the world and after that I hope Arnold does I -
All this talk about CRUSADE is indeed good news (it is, after all, from the pen of the screenwriter of the underappreciated SORCERER), and the same goes for Ridley Scott's I AM LEGEND. But getting lost in the talk is an ancient Ridley Scott project that never flew -- TRISTAN AND ISEULT. Supposedly his dream movie, he used its helmet designs in ALIEN when the project didn't take. Can anybody remember back that far? Does anyone else want to see this aside from me?
P.S. Where can I get my hands on a copy (hard or otherwise) of the CRUSADE script anyway? -
