Criterion's "Armageddon" Special Edition DVD coolness !!!

Glen here...

With an extensive listing of material (plus extras) which will appear on Criterion's forthcoming Armageddon DVD. Yes, the title will also be released onLaserdisc, shortly before the DVD is released. No firm street the at the moment...

Last time I mentioned the *regular* DVD release of Armageddon, everyone in the Talkbacks kicked and screamed about not buying it, in favor of waiting for the Criterion release. Well folks, it's coming soon (still haven't heard a firm street date). Here's what's going to be on it:

______________________________________

It's a two DVD set. The first disc, the movie disc, features:

* An exclusive widescreen transfer of the director's cut, personally supervised by Michael Bay. This cut has a few things trimmed here and there plus about 3 minutes more footage, most notably a scene with Bruce Willis' character and his father.

* Two commentary tracks. One featuring Michael Bay, Jerry Bruckheimer, Bruce Willis, and Ben Affleck (who is hilarious). The second features cinematographer John Schwartzman, NASA consultant Joe Allen, and asteroid consultant Ivan Bekey.

The second disc is all supplementary material and features:

* Michael Bay's gag reel - a reel from the wrap party with all kinds of funny outtakes from the set.

* Deleted scenes compilation - scenes not vital enough to make the director's cut, but still interesting to take a look at.

* Analyses of the special effects by the visual effects supervisors:

--Richard Hoover - this piece deals with all the shuttle/asteroid sequences created at Dreamquest. It goes into detail about the look of the asteroid and CG gasses around it.

-- Pat McClung - was effects supervisor for the rest of the movie, this piece discusses the job of an effects supervisor and details a few different shots.

-- Hoyt Yeatman - this is a really great piece that deals exclusively with the destruction of Paris shot. It goes into great detail on the various levels involved in creating one 7 second effect shot.

* Production designer Michael White on the look of Armageddon. This piece also has some cool behind the scenes shots and really beautiful production design drawings.

* And finally - Trailers, teasers, and television spots, the Aerosmith music video: "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing," (plus interviews with band members), storyboards and additional production design drawings.
