'Big Chris' in MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 2'

Published at:  Jan 29, 1999 3:23:15 AM CST

Well, I imagine since Tom Cruise was in England during LOCK, STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS' release, that he is very much aware of the immense coolness that Vinnie Jones emanated in that film. In fact, in one scene Vinnie (aka Big Chris) is, for me, the sheerest personification of RAGE I have ever scene documented on film. It is disturbing as hell, and great work by Vinnie. Each of his lines are delivered note perfect, and I can't imagine what a 'Cool God' like John Woo could do with this man. I hope it comes to pass.... Though I have heard that Vinnie was hooked up with the telly show based on the film.

Hey Harry, I heard that Tom Cruise was trying to get Vinnie Jones a
role in Mission Impossable 2. Vinnie Jones, in case you need to be told,
is the huge, super cool, bloke who played Big Chris in "Lock,Stock and
far to many words in the title". I can only hope that this rumour is
true. It could be - after all, its well known that the Cruiser loved the
film (pretty good taste!). Still, you probably knew all this
anyway...about 3 mounths ago. Geez, I was only trying to help.

Keep up the good work (I'm English, but I lived in Austin for all of
last year, and I think it's the coolest city in the world - after
London, of course!)

yours,

little chris

Does everyone know that Vinnie Jones is a pro-football/manager in Britain and has captained the National Welsh side? He is a really hard bastard on the pitch too!

    He's a Bloomin' Footballer!!

I'm sorry, but I have to vent some spleen here. Now, I'm all power to the British Film Industry & all that, because let's face it, with all the dusty crusty costume rubbish we've been turning out for seemingly decades, anything we do produce that's even slightly contempary I feel duty bound to go "yeah" and shout from the rooftops.

But, I'm sorry, and I know it's not a popular opinion but Lock Stock and Stuff is a case of "emperors new clothes!"

So somebody lent Guy Ritchie an Oxford Scientific camera which he liberally cranked up and down at inoportune moments. That does not constitute well execute Style or Coolness!

The script which was ever so witty & refreshing and gritty? Hasn't anybody seen Pulp Fiction? True Romance? The Italian Job? The movie didn't just borrow themes or lines, it stole entire CHUNKS from these movies!

Yes, I concede, the main group of lads did turn out fresh, charismatic, and fun performances, but what is all the fuss about Vinnie Bleedin' Jones? HE'S A FOOTBALLER FOR GOD SAKE. There are SO many young, struggling actors all round the world that could have given more to that role than a grimace or faltering delivery, and never get the chance. Vinny, go d bless him, cultural icon etc etc, was used solely so they could make a fuss in UK tabloids and stick him on the posters.

Which brings me to the point that really sparked all this vitriol. Just before seeing Lock Stock etc, I watched and interview with Guy Ritchie, this innovative, young, former runner turned first time director. When asked "Why did you make this movie?" his reply was "I saw a niche in the market......"

I kid you not. The interview was with Chirs Evans on TFI Friday.

Now stop me if I'm worng, but surely the reason a first time director as "young" and "enthusiastic" as Richie makes a movie is because he has fire in his blood, and an unquenchable need to tell great stories and follow in the footsteps of film makers he or she has idolised since childhood. NOT because they saw a NICHE in the bloody MARKET!!!.....

    And relax.

Sorry, rant over. I just think we should be backing real talent, not opportunists.

    That's just my opinion.

Although I think it'd be neat to see Vinnie in MI2, I think QPR needs him more!
