John McLame looks at BOFINGER'S BIG THING

Published at:  Jan 21, 1999 1:04:39 AM CST

Alrighty folks, Quint first reported that the script was fun as could be on this film, but then we had a couple of bad test screening reviews, but now we are getting better word. Which is good, because... well FRANK OZ has a strong habit of making pretty damn funny flicks. But enough of me, John McLame wants to take over... never argue with a barefoot glass in his soles man with a gun...

Harry, bubbie...I'm your white knight!

I was lucky enough crash a screening of Bofinger's Big Thing. Speaking
of big, Frank "YODA" Oz was there, & he is a tall bastard. Just how does
he do those high pitched voices? Anyway, the movie was absolutely
histerical!

Steve Martin was great as usual, but the surprise was Eddie Murphy.
Someone must've supplied him with extra transvestite hookers, because he
was fucking funny!
Besides the fat 'Rick Baker-ized' Eddie in The Nutty Proffesor, he
hasn't been this funny since Coming to America!

The premise of the movie was great. Now here's what the trailers will
surely tell you.

Steve is a desperate almost penniless producer that gets a script he
thinks is great. This could save him, so he tries to get a deal with a
producer. The producer agrees to make the picture, under the impression
Eddie (who in the movie is a big action movie star on the level of
Schwarzenneger) will star in it. Eddie ain't gonna do it, so what does
Steve do? He shoots the movie anyway, with Eddie as the star, only Eddie
doesn't know he's in the movie. This means sending the actors to read
their lines to Eddie while he's in public, & him not understanding what
the hell they're telling him! All the while, they are hiding around
corners & in bushes with 35mm movie cameras & gear!

The comedy of this situation is consistantly entertaining, & they throw
in a few surprises along the way. The cast was great, including Jamie
Kennedy from Scream & mmmmm.... Heather Graham, & some other wacky
people that made up the movie crew.

I could tell you more details of the situations, but me saying them sure
isn't funny.
Everyone at the screening laughed continuously throughout, probably even
more than for There's Something About Mary, so whoever may have reported
it wasn't so good, should be gassed with Smilex. This is the fifth
really strong comedy I've seen this year. I hope action movies start to
come back this strong.

    Steve makes his comeback

    by letseatcheese

I always knew Steve Martin was the king of comedy. I told people he'd make his comeback this year with BOFINGER and THE OUT OF TOWNERS with Goldie Hawn, but would they believe me? noooooooo. I knew it, I knew it. No-one will argue with me now, ha ha!

    Steve is god!

    Comeback?

    by smilin'jackruby

Steve Martin took some time off, did a lot of writing here and there, wrote some more, (did "The Spanish Prisoner"), and never went away. On Charlie Rose a few months ago while promoting "Pure Drivel," he said something about after "Sgt. Bilko," he just wanted to leave for a bit, completely understandable. I just honestly wish he'd release another comedy album or do a comedy tour, but that's about as likely as Woody Allen doing it. Steve Martin is, always has been, and always will be brilliant (with a couple of stumbles here and there with projects he picks and too much belief in his own material). Read his new text if you think I'm wrong-o.

    YES, COMEBACK!!!!!

    by letseatcheese

I meant his comeback, as in, he's funny again! I didn't mean he'd actually went somewhere, like underground or something. Don't take me so literally. SHEESH!

    Just to avoid misconceptions...

    by uncle cracky

...I can also croon like Peter Steele. Oh, pardon me. Is there a film discussion going on here?

    Ho Hum

    by anton_sirius

Oh dear, another movie where someone is unwittingly the star of a TV show/movie. Another incestuous twist in Hollywood's ongoing love affair with itself. Of course if it's LA Story funny I'll see it anyway. And I'm sure Steve will do a brilliant job of disguising ego as criticism. But still, I'd almost rather see a "Two Wild and Crazy Guys" movie than another one of these. Does anyone remember when Hollywood recycled simple concepts like body switching? "Aargh, I'm an adult trapped in Kirk Cameron's body!!!" Now THAT'S comedy.

    Bofinger

This movie is one that I'm really looking forward to laughing at...especially since Martins said the humor is similar to A FISH CALLED WANDA, one of the funniest movies of all time. But on the subject of impersonations, I can do half the cast of South Park (especially Cartman and Mr. Mackey) and make everyone in the room laugh their asses off. I also do Ed McMahon's "You are correct sir" line and many others.

    That photo says it all.

    by john mclame

Look at Eddie Murphy in that photo. Tell me it doesn't look like something out of Saturday Night Live when he was in the cast! He was so good in this movie. Can you say comeback?

People are going to eat this movie up.
