Rumors on the Dreamworks' GALAXY QUEST and GREMLINS 3

Published at:  Jan 21, 1999 12:27:50 AM CST

Well folks, today I've been poking around trying to find out what's going on with some alleged DREAMWORKS projects... The first was a rumored GREMLINS 3 project... Well, the 'word' had it that DREAMWORKS was set to move forward on this project... Ummm... Not so far as I can determine. Joe Dante is moving forward with a different project right now, and while AMBLIN was involved with the GREMLINS franchise, I believe that the project would have to be produced in partnership with Warner Bros. And my people at WARNERS haven't heard a peep about the project, other than the quite lucrative settlement Warners recently got from the makers of FURBIES. And over at DREAMWORKS... there was no word on the project as well. So until one of my folks speaks up... don't believe anything on that project.

SO that brings me to GALAXY QUEST, well my friends here is the latest on that project...

Here's some more grape juice from the Hollywood Grapevine.

Anyway, as a lot of your readers have commented, Galaxy Quest is a
pretty lame title. The people at Dreamworks think so too. They wanted
to use the original title, "Captain Starshine" but apparently there has
been some legal glitch tied to it. I think Ramis will come up with a
new title if the Captain Starshine title doesn't get resolved.

Also...I hear that Jim Carrey, Mel Gibson, Steve Martin and Tim Allan
are all vying for the lead role. Rumor has it that Geena Davis is being
considered for the lead female role.

    Gremlins 3

    by morgus

I would love to see another "Gremlins." The second one was silly fun, and the first is a classic. However, without Joe Dante it just wouldn't be the same. He was the only thing good about "Small Soldiers," and I hope he yet agian gets to direct the great Gizmo. And bring back Chris Walas for the creature FX! Rick Baker did a fine job on "Gremlins 2," but Walas's work in the original is amazing.

    Favourite Films

    by john shaft

I am not talking about the best films ever made here, but the most enjoyable films that you can watch over and over again, you dig? Anyway. My favourite 2 films of all time are Bugsy Malone and Gremlins 2 - The New Batch. No matter how many times you watch these films, you are entertained. They are both great fun. I would love to see a Gremlins 3, but I thought they had allready made it and called it Small Soldiers. Who cares though. Just let Joe Dante remake the Gremlin films as much as he wants and I will watch them. Can you diggit?

Gremlins 3 ? Hooray! Please let it happen!

    by kubrick

    God, a third Gremlins film!
Yes, please God let it happen!
Get Joe Dante to direct it and
if not get Chris Columbus who
wrote the first film to direct
and write the new Gremlins movie.
    I loved the Gremlins movies.
    I watch Gremlims every Christmas,
it scarred me as a kid and has become a comedy favorite for me in my later years as an adult.
Gremlins 2...what can I say except
it's arguably one of the best sequels ever made. I enjoy listening to Tony Randall's voice as the Brain Gremlin with his talks of "civilization" and Gimzo
    fighting off Gremlins as Rambo.
God, what a cool movie. These movies alone for me have made
Joe Dante in my book, one of the greatest directors ever.

    Oi! No.

    by john shaft

Gremlins was a cool film, but if Chris Columbus directed it, what then. His films are just sentimental codswallop. Gremlins would have been if Joe Dante didn't direct it. But because he did, he treated the sentimentality with a satirical eye. look at the whole "That why I don't like Christmas" scene. If Chris Columbus directed it, it would have been played for all the sentimentality that he could get. As Joe Dante directed it, the scene is strangly funny. Chris Columbus no. Joe Dante yes.

    Gremlins 3,Furby 1!

    by vinnieb

A little dollop of confusion to stir the pot... As you may have heard, they sued (threatened to sue, really) Hasbro over the stunning similarity between Gizmo and 1998's Cabbage Patch Kid, Furby. Now, they may have did that just to keep the copyright alive as a matter of course, but could it be they were already planning to bring the character back into the fore?

    Terry Jones' script?

    by caius

Back when Gremlins 2 came out, there was an article in Starlog where Dante said Terry Jones had done a script for G2 that was the funniest thing Dante had ever read. It spoofed Godzilla and King Kong, and a lot of other things, ala Gremlins 2. Everyone at Amblin supposedly loved it, but it would've cost $100 million-plus to film back then, which was way too much, so they went with the version we all eventually saw.

Has anyone seen this other script? Might they use it now that CGI could be the cure for some of those problems they had with the Jones' SFX scenes? HARRY! Get your spies to track this puppy down!

    by jonte

    Sorry!
    Temporary(?) brain damage!
Of course Mad Max isn't a romantic
comedy (love to see that though ;-)).But I'm pretty sure that mr. Gibson said something about that he thought M.i.b. or ID4 (or anything with a UFO in it)was silly and that he would never do it. Apologies once more.

    Mel and Sci-Fi

    by letseatcheese

Hang on, isn't FARENHEIT 451 (or however it's spelt) a Sci-Fi??? I don't know cause I haven't seen the original, but I heard that's a sci-fi flick, and Mel's definately directing and possibly (except for the Tom Cruise rumours, but we'll ignore them cause I hate Tom Cruise) starring in it. So, just pointing that little piece of info out......
    .....just ignore me...........
.......I'm boring...... the first GREMLINS was a classic though.

JOE DANTE IS A HACK DIRECTOR!

    by uncapie

When are you guys going to wise-up and quit idolizing this guy?! He makes Roger Corman look like King Vidor! He's not that good! Spielberg gave him a break when he saw "Pirannaha", the only good film he ever did because John Sayles wrote the original script. He's been riding on the coat tails of that film for years. He's not a very plesant man to talk to, he's full of himself and when you bring up Gremlins, he doesn't like to talk about it. JOE DANTE SUCKS!

    Scorned by Dante?

    by mike williamson

I don't know what this jerk off above me is talking about. Joe Dante is, in my opinion, the greatest director EVER!!! Piranha his best film cuz Sayles wrote the screenplay? Hardly...And anyways, Sayles wrote "The Howling", also.

Sounds like you've got some personal issues, buddy. All the interviews I've ever read say that Dante is very personable and likeable, and even somewhat humble about his position in Hollywood. And in almost every interview I've ever read (and that's quite a bit) he's openly talked about the two Gremlins movies.

And everyone knows he's not a hack director, either. In fact, I think Dante's films are some of the most distinct and exhilarating I've ever seen.

IF there is a Gremlins 3, it'll only work with Dante at the helm. If he doesn't wanna do it, I don't want another Gremlins movie.

    G3/SS

    by anton_sirius

OK, sure, Small Soldiers did bear an eerie resemblance to Gremlins. So what? It still rocked. Nobody seems to mention Small Soldiers as one of the better films of '98, but when I think back to all the crap I waded through last year, and how many films I actually enjoyed watching, SS deserves a place among the top ten. It's certainly up there with Babe: PITC and Dark City (the Thumb Twins two picks for #1!) I could watch that attack of the killer Barbies scene over and over and over. In fact I think I will right now. Ciao.

    Show Joe some respect......

    by mr. zumdish

Joe Dante's masterpiece is on it's way...I can feel it. I have always been a huge admirer of his. Only he had the balls to poke fun at his own film. Gremlins 2 attacked Gremlins' semtmental scenes and was no-holds-barred hysterics. But I believe Joe is one great script away from being considered a A-list director. Look at Sam Raimi, who is very similar to Joe in style and humor. Now, after A SIMPLE PLAN, they are breaking down his door. Go Joe Go! Attach him to The Crowded Room! Attach him to any non-sci-fi-horror film and watch him flex his cr.eative muscles. I know he can.

Joe Dante"greatest director" ever? Have you ever heard of John Ford, Howard Hawks, Robert Wise? How many Academy Awards did Dante win? Hmmm, lets see...Dante was orginally going to direct "My Favorite Martian" , but he was RELIEVED OF THAT DUTY! But, you know all that already. You're in with the "in" crowd in Hollywood. You were there in the beginning when he got his start at Corman's. Wow, I wish I could as cool as you, "MR. KNOW-IT-ALL" Blow it out your ass! Joe Dante's best masterpiece was left in the toliet for you to worship. Yes, that's right. just for you, Mikey! And you're right, I am a jerk-off, but that's not what your mom told me last night. By-the-way, where can I get those cute, little jammies you wear to bed? The ones with the Yoda's on them and the footsies? You're neat.

    Gremlins 3 oh yeah

    by the big t

Journeyman here and gosh darn I agree with all of you their should be another one of them Gremlins films they kick ass. As for Small Soldiers the toys had some cooler weapons then the gremlins and had some better lines. My one question to the people over at Warner Bros. what the hell will the plot be I mean I know we can definitely get back the stars of the last one ( who were they again) but where will they go in the 3rd film oh where will they go. As for a director while I would like having Dante back if thats not possible lets get Ronnie Yu (Bride of Chuckie)he did a wonderful job on Chuckie and he would do great with the Gremlins. Only advice Warner Bros really needs is make sure you have a plot. That is what truly killed Small Soldiers. Journeyman out

Harry, if you are reading this
message on TalkBack, I would please like to ask if you know how I can find or get a copy of the Terry Jones script for Gremlins 2.
I've heard a lot about it and
always wanted to read it. I'm a big fan of Gremlins and Gremlins 2 but still, I'd love to read what
Jones' take on Gremlins 2 would
    have been like. Since, according
    to Amblin Entertaintment, it was
one of the funniest scripts they've ever read and I'm interested in seeing if the script
lives up to it's hype. If you know how I can get a copy of the script
or if you could e-mail me a copy,
    please e-mail me at
    rjwhalen@cti-md.com.
    Thank you very much for

    Gremlins Director

    by cyberd

I really enjoyed the first "Gremlins" movie and found it to be a classic. I think a third "Gremlins" film could be great if they get a good script. Joe Dante would be my first choice as a director since he directed the last two, but if he decides not to, I could really see Tim Burton maybe taking a shot at directing the third film. He could really put some life into the series and make it really dark but funny at the same time. I can't wait for Tim Burton's next film "Sleepy Hollow"! It's gonna be GREAT!

What's this? Someone slagging my beloved Geena? Who are you, spawn, and which of her so-called 'bad' performances are you referring to? The Accidental Tourist? Earth Girls Are Easy? (And doesn't the thought of Geena and Jim reteaming make you all warm and fuzzy? Can they work Damon and Julie in there somewhere too) The Fly? Cutthroat Island? (Well, OK, I guess I'll give you that one. But I think that was part of the pre-nup. She didn't have a choice.) Geena's comic abilities have long been ignored and I for one would love to see her star in a goofy sci-fi-ish flick again. Heck, I'd just love to see her get some heat again. She deserves it.

John Ford, Howard Hawks, and Robert Wise

    by wesreviews

Don't get me wrong... John Ford, Howard Hawks, and Robert Wise are all great directors... but simply put, Academy Awards don't mean crap. Alfred Hitchcock, the
greatest director of all time, NEVER recieved an Oscar for Directing. Oscars don't mean
anything, plain and simple. Joe Dante will eventually become an A-list director. I can feel
it. Though I was a bit disappointed in his Small Soldiers work (well, compared to
Gremlins, it was disappointing) I still believe that he is extremely talented and I look
forward to any and all projects he is considering... even Gremlins 3, if he decides to do it.

Why they can't use Captain Starshine

    by devilstower

    Just speculation, but...

Starshine was the name of one the superhero characters in the Wild Cards series of books. Actually, Starshine was one of many personalities of the chemist turned hippie hero, Captain Trips.

This series got at least one shot at being a film, with a script prepared for Disney by G. R. R. Martin. Starshine may well have featured in this script, or have been in the other materials prepared for the project. This might still be fresh enough in some minds to put Starshine on the skids.
