Some info on Dreamworks' GALAXY QUEST!!!

Published at:  Jan 17, 1999 8:29:09 AM CST

Ok folks, here is a project that I'm dying to hear anything and everything that is going on with it. So fill me in, ok? Groovy.

Thought you might like some insider information on this Dreamwork
project slated to be their Christmas release of '99. I guess you know
Harold Ramis is directing. Debra Zane (Get Shorty) is casting director,
the A-team of George Lucas' Industrial Lite Magic is scheduled to do
special effects, Mark Johnson is producing and Linda DeScena is
Production Designer.

The original script (Captain Starshine) is written by David Howard. The
re-write is by Robert Gordon. The basic plot-line is Aliens come to
earth looking for a leader to save their planet. They kidnap the
equivalent of Captain Kirk, but are disappointed to find out he's
William Shatner, only an actor. So, they actor and his "crew" try their
hands at real intergalactic battle!
It's going to be around $50-&70 million budget. Should be fun! I think
they'll have the lead cast soon

I think the story sounds strangely similar to a bug's life's story....

    waitaminute!

That's the plot of Captain Zoom! You know, the one with Ron Pearlman as a Ming the Merciless villain, and Nichelle Nichols as Mrs. Yoda! It was from the Action Pack that does Herc and Xena. If this movie is like that, then I hope it remembers to include some actual jokes.

It also sounds a bit like "Mom and Dad Save the World". With John Lovitz and Teri Garr.

    Get the man himself....

    by caliban

You know, it would be worth it to see if they actually did get William Shatner to play the role.
Then again it would be even better if they made it the next Star Trek movie.

    sounds like...?

    by uncle cracky

C'mon guys, all the above mentioned films are just retellings of Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai." Just like "The Magnificent Seven" and "Army of Darkness." Nothing wrong with that, though. It's always a fun concept.

    "quest" curse

    by uncle cracky

...and the only successful merchandise to include the word "Quest" in the name have been the computer games from the company that pioneered an alternative to shoot-em-up games in the first place: Sierra On-Line, way back in the day. Series like King's Quest, Space Quest, Police Quest, Hero's Quest, etc. FYI :-)

    DwD: Mr. Obvious Tells All

    by dwdunphy

I'm not famous for my brain, but "Galaxy" read as "Star" and "Quest" read as "Trek"... Get it?
This is one of those concepts that read real cool, but may be impossible to pull off. Sure, they could do it... awfully.
Good luck, Godspeed, please don't be a drooling love letter to those wretched Trekkies, and we'll get along just fine.

    Keep the original title!!!

    by hbinvt

I agree with the previous posts --- the title "Galaxy Quest" is a bust. "Captain Sunshine", (or maybe moonshine?) seems to capture the comedic nature of the film much better.
