The mother-lode of Universal's THE MUMMY images... from the trailer and from a secret place!!! NEW Added text for pics

Published at:  Jan 14, 1999 4:19:08 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I awoke, and have included text beneath each of the below images to help explain their existance!!!! The photographic images came from a trailer that will be hitting with Universal's VIRUS and the other images come from our spy known as 'The Director'. Who he is is best kept hush hush and on the QT...

Above is my favorite shot of the trailer. Why? Because here is a shot that hasn't seen a silver screen since MARCH OR DIE, it's a classic desert charge in the tradition of CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE. For me, the Golden Age of Hollywood was famous for shoots like this... Will they resurrect the famous Yakima Canutt's "RUNNING W" which has been outlawed because of the damage it caused to horses. It would be possible with modern digital effects, and would shock the hell out of an audience that is completely unfamiliar with Canutt's brilliant stunt!!!

This is a SOLDIER Mummy. You'll see over the course of this film several types of mummies. Slow ones all the way up to fantastically dynamic mummies that'll rip ya to pieces. This ain't your father's or Grandfather's or Great-Grandfather's Mummy movie!

Sand is but an instrument to Imhotep! He will whup your ass. As for the, "Does he speak with a British accent?" Well, for this movie, he speaks only in an early dialect of Egyptian and a bit of 'the slave's tongue' as he calls it, we know it as Hebrew.

From what I saw on set, the costuming and the make up effects are unlike anything I've seen in film. The key for me will be the score, the film is gorgeous, very rich in texture, but the atmosphere will be added by the score. I WISH THEY'D USE JAMES BERNARD!!!

Books with covers like that should not be opened. And when you know it's titled, THE BOOK OF THE DEAD... well, clue one mister, you ain't dead yet, it ain't for your eyes!!!

Thus our adventure begins with this little charm.

In the script when I read about this shot of the sandstorm taking on the features of IMHOTEP... I cringed. I knew it'd look bad... But look! ILM did it, can you imagine the sandstorm in that other film?

Do you like your Priest Mummies medium rare or well done?

If there is one thing we genre fans know, it's not to cross, touch or tamper with seals half covered with sand!

Well, you could have your Priest Mummies... rare..

They're gonna need a faster plane dontcha think?

Old papyrus maps, folded in little treasure boxes are not meant to be followed. They should be framed on a wall and stared at... nothing more I tell ya!

These scarab beetles are some mean muthers, I'll tell ya that. You'll see. They're cute like them bugs in A BUG'S LIFE... you'll see...

Camels, golden hued skys, wistful breezes of desert sand... must be an epic, eh?

As one of you in TALK BACK suggested, "who is this evil Barbarella?" Well, she's a chick you shouldn't marry, I'll just put it like that. Okay?

SRC="images/the-mummy-full-body-concept-cadaver.jpg">

Aren't these images of Imhotep just badass or what?

Imhotep is the man MAN!!! He's noble and tragic. He's not a one note character, and the actor playing him (Arnold Vosloo) is not playing him as a bad guy, but as a man fulfilling a destiny and a life he has wanted since birth.

More mummy stuff

And more still

I didn't run the pics of the 'good' guys because the frame grabs didn't come out that good, the faces kept being blurry when I tried to get them, this is a teaser trailer so, you'll see them best on the big screen. Overall you get the sense from the trailer that it is an adventure/horror film. Some major effects are in the trailer, that I didn't want to spoil for you here, but on the big screen... they'll look fantastic. Some of you were questioning the tone of the film, and from all that I've seen, it's more along the lines of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, than anything else really. It's playful, but takes it's action and danger seriously. The villians have motivations, but it's as if more of the last sequence when the ARK was opened was released throughout the film. There is sooo much that isn't hinted at in the trailer it's not really even funny. MORIARTY saw this in the future on one of his excursions there, and said it was fantastic... so... will this MAY be the best ILM month in film history? We shall see won't we?

    Classic Horror Revival

    by dandini

I was sceptical when I first heard about this, getting a bit tired of remakes and all...But this really does look good. Certainly a lot better than the worthy but dull Dracula and Frankenstein of recent memory (just because an old book is a classic doesn't mean it'll make a good word for word translation into film, guys!)
On a similar theme, does anybody know whats going on with the revival of Hammer Horror. I vaguely remember some snippets years ago that the studio was being brought back, and even that Ralph Fiennes was involved. Which is pretty cool, as he reminds me of Peter Cushing in many ways.
And finally, anyone fancy talking about James Cameron? Nope. Thought not.

Those pictures do look like an Iron Maiden cd cover. This is going to be scary. I cant wait. May is going to be so cool with this movie and space wars or whatever it is coming out later in that month. I hope they remake the wolfman. Well maybe not since remakes usually suck. This is to James Cameron and Hollywood I wont be paying double price for movies.

    a Napolean in rags?

    by uncle cracky

Now, wait just a second. Bram Stoker's Dracula was sensational. The sound alone is a work of art. As long as one can get past the one-dimensional performances of Keanu and Winona, this film is an epic. I could watch Gary Oldman strut around with hairy palms for hours! One could suppose that the reason for some individuals' distaste for it all is because it is an "artsy-fartsy" movie. But then I'm a sucker for "artsy-fartsy" (ala City of Lost Children). Oh, and the Mummy looks all right. I hope it is an original take and not a rip-off of the old Boris classic. Then again, there are only so many plot devices that will motivate an undead phaoroh...

Those are some pretty impressive photos. This movie looks like its gonna be an epic of sorts, which would be cool. The pics definitely have an epic look to them, with those sweeping deserts and all. and the mummy design rocks. I just hope they keep the length of the film reasonable... even if its an epic doesn't mean it has to be over 2 hrs long

    by mckracken

WOW!! These pics look a ton more impressive than those at cinescape.com. Basically Mummy was described as "Indiana Jones" x "Hellraiser". Did anyone catch that dreary Lou Gossett Jr. "Mummy" on HBO. I taped it, and fell asleep while rewatching it, (then it got taped over by "Call to Arms"). Oh yeah, all you people who wont pay double the ticket price try this: "dont pay full price for ANYTHING until 'EPISODE ONE'" Try going to Matinees or get Student discounts! Bye the Way, "Space Truckers" is playing all this month on HBO, I thought it was great!!! :O) McKracken!

Being a South African, I couldnt help noticing when checking up on this movie in IMDB, that the part of the mummy is being played by our very own Arnold Vosloo.
i personally I think this is a fantastic idea since I his acting in Hard Target scared me shitless.
I just really hope he doesnt have much dialogue.
Oh, he also played the part of Darkman in parts 2 & 3.

    by brattacus

If you look at the design pics
of the mummy, it looks as though
he goes through a series of physical development, from the almost totally skeletal guy to the bald guy with the chunks taken out of him here and there. Having not seen the original, does the mummy regenerate his flesh over time? That'd certainly make him more of a threat (though less cool, I'd say)

    History repeats itself?

    by ilvenshang

1931 - Universal releases flawed but entertaining version of Dracula. It's a hit, is followed by even more successful Frankenstein, which is artistic enough to make the AFI list zillions of years later. The orignal horror boom follows. 1957 - Hammer releases flawed but entertaining version of Frankenstein. Big hit, same team adapts Dracula for 1958. Result is the Star Wars of horror - huge hit, fast-paced tale of good vs evil and unforgettable climax. Major horror revival follows. Coppola's Dracula, though entertaining in a MTV kind of way, was not near as profound as it thought it was and its success was mostly due to clever promotion, hence financial failure of its imitators. Doesn't perhaps count as horror revival. So now we're up to the present. Mummy for summer 1999, Universal horror rereleases for Halloween '99, Sleepy Hollow for November '99 (I think, correct me if I'm wrong). Animated Frankenstein for Halloween 2000. Phantom of the Opera for the new millenium. Remote possibility of a Kong from Universal and remoter chance of animated Dracula from Fox. Possible Castlevania kicking around somewhere in the mix. Yep, interesting times for us Ackerman types.

I hope this movie is good. The pictures look interesting, and I love Egyptology, but, we'll see...I've never seen the original Mummy, but I'm assuming the woman at the end is the love interest that the Mummy want's to have as his girl for all time. And the South African playing the mummy is o.k. if he's in costume, but what's up with all the anglo egyptians in Hollywood? Seti and Ramses in Prince of Egypt had british accents. Maybe it really is the English Patient meets the Mummy. I'd like to see a screen version of Ramses the Damned by Anne Rice. That's her best work in my opinion.

    Don't Knock "Deep Rising"

    by smilin'jackruby

I agree with mr_noodle. "Deep Rising" was a schlock-fest barrel o' fun in the vein of "Carnosaur 2" or any other odd-ball Corman-esque knock off. I can wait for "The Mummy," though. I just can't convince myself that it'll be worth a damn. I really like the Christopher Lee/Peter Cushing ones (not to mention the Karloff) and am afraid this "Mummy" will just not do it for me. I'm just feelin' a little wiggle on the "Godzilla"-barometer. Can't wait for the next couple of Romero flicks, though. I pray nightly that there will indeed be a "Twilight of the Dead" fucking finally. "Night..." is a classic, "Dawn..." is just not like any other movie ever made (a'la "Last House on the Left"), but "Day..." felt like "Troma's War" trying to take itself seriously. Blah. God, I'm long-winded. Sorry.

From the director of Deep Rising

    by bryan

You know, it really does look good. I like mummies, I like plagues, I like old fashioned adventure. I like these images. And Moriarty's review made the story sound great. And someone above mentioned Arnold Vosloo playing the mummy - great idea!
So thank Gamera I have seen Deep Rising, and know that the movie is very, very, VERY unlikely to live up to it's potential. That way I won't be disappointed. I haven't seen Huck Finn and the other allegedly gawd awful films he's directed, but Deep Rising was enough to give me an indication that I should never expect him to ever make anything even reasonably worthwhile. Deep Rising is a horrible fucking movie, and it's not even enjoyable in its horribleness. It's grating. It's one of only a handful of movies I've seen in recent years that I genuinely wished I hadn't watched. I suppose it was better than Armageddon and Godzilla because I kind of liked the monster designs, but that was about all.
I'm not saying this guy can't change. Maybe Deep Rising wasn't his fault. Maybe someone forced the annoying performances, obnoxious sub-Aliens macho dialogue, lame jokes, and complete lack of entertainment value on him. Maybe he had a bad year. Maybe he's learned from his mistakes. Maybe he's been reborn. Maybe he's been infused with Infra-Man power.
I hope so. It would be a shame to blaspheme against the power of The Mummy. But I'm sure not going to get my hopes up as long as this guy's involved.

    by bitch moan

I guess the term "tone" is kind of subjective, but I'm looking at some of these Mummy sketches and thinking this will be a pure "R" rated horror flick. But you mention its "tone" is in line with RAIDERS. Granted RAIDERS was made when you could make a pretty intense "PG" movie, but where is THE MUMMY going to stand rating-wise? Is this going to be a teen catered "PG-13" sissy fest or a hard "R" maggots-crawling-out-of-bloody-eye-sockets type of film? Anyone, anyone?

Arnold Vosloo and other SA actors

    by alistaird

First off, thanks for the great site, Harry. This movie looks great, it reminds me a lot of Mike Mignola's HELLBOY, especially the novel THE LOST ARMY. It's great to see Arnold Vosloo moving up into the big leagues over there. But has anybody noticed that all the South African actors who've made it in the States have a disproportionately large number of genre movies on their resume? I can think of a few: Embeth Davidtz in ARMY OF DARKNESS, MATILDA and FALLEN (not counting Schindler's List),Arnold Vosloo in DARKMAN II and III (also a guest shot in American Gothic)and now THE MUMMY, Musetta Vander(Merwe) in OBLIVION, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER (she was the mantis teacher in "Teacher's Pet") and MORTAL KOMBAT:ANNIHILATION, Alice Krige in GHOST STORY, SLEEPWALKERS and STAR TREK:FIRST CONTACT, and finally Charlize Theron in DEVIL'S ADVOCATE, MIGHTY JOE YOUNG and the upcoming ASTRONAUT'S WIFE. By the way, Fay Wray, who was menaced by the ORIGINAL giant ape was also born in South Africa(as far as I'm aware).

    by hastur

I think it was actually called a "Flying W" and it was a rig you attached to a horse to make it have a spectacular head-first fall while running at full gallop (you can see the stunt in a lot of Westerns). They stopped using them because a lot of horses were being badly injured by the rig and the fall, and as most movies are monitored by the SPCA these days I seriously doubt the Flying W will make a return.

The Mummy, and the false ring of artsiness

    by faust

Harry, thank you for your pictures of "The Mummy," the film looks good and you didn't give away too much. The spirit is close to "Raiders" level? Sounds good to me, and almost makes me want to see "Virus" to see the preview.
And now for the rest of you. One thing I've noticed while looking at the posts here and for "The Thin Red Line" is the word "artsy." First of all, artsy is not an actual word. It seems that what people really want to say is "arty." Arty means something is pretending to be art, yet it doesn't work. Makes me wonder what people mean when they hold an "arty party." "Artsy," or more appropriately artsy-fartsy, is a term coined by people who hate art, or anything resembling art. If more people used the word "arty," then I would have more respect. Thanks, just wanted to clear that up. Look forward to "The Mummy."
