Universal and ILM's FRANKENSTEIN

Published at:  Jan 13, 1999 2:37:18 AM CST

Folks, here's the latest on ILM and Universal's FRANKENSTEIN animated flick, which I'm dying to hear as much as can be heard from behind the scenes... Keep listening and watching folks... it could be cool...

Hiya Harry. I noted on your list o' upcoming flicks that you haven't yet
heard anything about the animated Frankenstein in the works. The latest
Star Wars Insider has a blurb on it. Sounds cool, being largely done by
ILM. I'll cite the key points in the article:

ILM is teaming up with Universal Pictures to create a computer-generated
feature film comeback of the studio's classic Frankenstein movies,
scheduled for release Halloween, 2000. The as-yet-untitled film, for which
ILM is expected to generate roughly 1,5000 computer-generated effects
shots, will be directed by ILM visual effects supervisor Dave Carson and
Brent Maddock, from a screenplay by Maddock and S.S. Wilson (the pair also
wrote the great Tremors and the upcoming Wild, Wild West). . . . Early
reports indicate the movie will stay close to the visual style and feel of
director James Whale's 1931 original (which starred Boris Karloff) and will
also feature the characters Dr. Pretorious (introduced in 1935's Bride of
Frankenstein) and another legendary monster, the Wolfman.

Hope this is useful info!

    Dr. Pretorious rules!!!

I especially liked the little pope. But I don't think this is fair. Why should people get to see such wonderful crerations as these without going through the pain of watching the original films? 'Cause that's what it's all about, folks. You don't gain anything of worth without losing something else in the process. And what will one gain by watching a computer-animated Frankenstein film? Where is the sacrifice, the arduous hours of mining through bad prints, distorted sound, and cotton/putty prosthetic effects? Where will the beauty emerge from if there is no stinking pit for it to rise from? This project will rape the soul of the past. There is a reason the original actors are all dead. It is the nature of the universe. But, sure, I'll go see it!

    15000 shots?

    by usul

That is alot of effects shots, seeing as there are only about 7200 seconds of film in a 2hr flick.

I think, because of the placement of the comma, an extra 0 was accidently added to this figure: so it is probably only 1,500 shots.

    Wolfman?

    by thunderball

The Wolfman is going to be included? Don't get me wrong, I love the hairy guy but to include this character in the first film with Frankenstein is a bit tacky. Frankenstein is a classic novel and this could be a very classy film. One certainly doesn't want this project to turn into that awful TV mini-series (don't remember the name, was it "House of Frankenstein?) that ran last year with Frankenstein, the Wolfman and Dracula. Better to give Wolfy baby his own feature then start with the tag team fights.

Isn't this possibly a bad precedent?

    by bundren

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that this is a computer-animated film (like Toy Story, Bug's Life, etc)that will now use the same likenesses of the classic monster makeup designs and characters to tell/retell this story. So am I to understand that Dr. Pretorious will look very much like (if not eerily lifelike in the similarities) to the original Pretorious. And that Frankenstein and the Wolfman will look very much like Boris Karloff and Lon Chaney Jr.? This is intriguing, but I don't like the implications if this is true: what's next? We'll have a computer generated Humphrey Bogart movie? Or maybe an odd-couple buddy comedy with a computer generated Sinatra and Elvis? Scary stuff, and don't tell me that, if the technology exists, some idiot won't use it for just such a film.
