Here's a look at Stallone's DETOX

Published at:  Jan 08, 1999 7:35:31 PM CST

Well for all the folks out there (like me) that have been following Balboa (aka Stallone) for the last eon or so... I've found this whole... 'reinvention' a bit.... interesting. COPLAND was the beginning of Stallone's second career... and thus far he's been very picky about what he's doing, and where he's headed. So DETOX is another film in the progression for Sylvester to get where he wants to be... which seems to be 'respect'. I wish him the best of luck, as his Rocky character was one of those film creations that has stuck with me since it's screen debut. So here's the next step...

Took a look at your list of movies you wanted info. on...Detox seemed to be
one you didn't know much about, so I can give you a script scoop here. And
what better time to do it, since only yesterday, Tom Berenger and Polly
Walker
were added to the cast!!

The first draft of the script by Ron L. Brinkerhoff is basically a
standard
cop-killer cat 'n mouse situation, set in a remote detox clinic in Wyoming.
Stallone's character, Jake Malloy, was yer typical movie supercop
specialising
in catching serial killers, that is until one particularly nasty killer
murders Malloy's girlfriend, and then kills himself. Malloy hits the bottle,
and soon after tries to kill himself. He gets sent to the detox clinic
specialising in rehabilitating cops, and we get introduced to the ten or so
cops resident there who are in various states of psychosis/movie loon-ness.
And what do ya know, somebody starts offing everyone, and Malloy starts
trying
to find out who. Nobody can escape, since it's the depths of winter and
anyone
trying to leave will freeze to death...

So there's yer plot. It's an ok read, could do with a polish to cover up a
plot hole or two (sorta SPOILER here...Such as how does the killer get into
the clinic in the first place? It's never really explained how he snuck in
under his assumed identity..) Anyway, bodies pile up, the killer taunts
Malloy, and we find out that it may even be the killer from the beginning,
apparently not so dead as we thought...everything else goes according to
formula, with Malloy uncovering the "surprise" identity of the killer, and
having the by-the-numbers showdown at the end.

It should be a decent flick for Stallone...it's not a typical Rambo role,
there's some depth to his character, it's a kind of role that you might
think
of for a "regular" actor like Alec Baldwin, someone like that. But still,
it's
basically an action movie. (Wonder if they'll keep the line near the
beginning
in which a dead cop is referred to as "A regular fucking Rambo". Oh, the
irony!)

And finally, all GEEKS should go see this movie when it gets made, if only
for the opening scene where a bunch of robbers dressed as Chewbacca, Yoda
and
a Stormtrooper hold up a pet store! My final word...this script is ok.
Nothing exciting or original, but it's better than Stop or my mom will
shoot.

DETOX will be Stallone's big return

    by abking

I think DETOX will be KICK ASS when it comes out. Max, is this the draft that will actually get filmed? Have you heard anything on a RAMBO 4? That Star Wars scene should be fun to watch and that line about a "rugular fucking Rambo" will let fan boys cheer.

Is it a bank or store robbery in the Detox script?

    by abking

Max, by the way, is it a store or a bank that the robbery takes place in because Moriarty told me it was a bank in the script he read?

I know what he did at the rehab????

    by dante`s inferno

Last I heard about DETOX,it was going to be directed by Jim
"I know what you did last summer" Gillespi. The plot sounds like the usual cop VS killer story, but then again this may be a good movie for Stallone (the guy can sure act "Copland"). Why bother making Rocky VI, haven

    Good Flick

    by clockwork taxi

Sounds like it will be pretty cool. I just hope he doesn't make his character retarded, like in Copland. It was the supporting cast that made it an ok show. His Sly still FAT?

    Detox will be great...

    by abking

Clockwork Taxi, Stallone is back to his regular - Cliffhanger, Rambo - look. I saw him a few months ago on E news daily and did he look better than ever. DETOX sounds great. I know that Stallone and Grazer will have the script fine tooned a little more before filming. The opening scene sounds KICK ASS. Yoda as the leader, LOL. Someone said this film sounds like Striking Distance, that Bruce Willis shit fest, I THINK NOT. Detox will be nothing like that. That film was a second rate thriller with no talent behind it. Detox has Grazer (Apollo 13, Ransom) producing and a careful Stallone coming off of COP LAND. He has been picky lately like Harry stated above and will make sure DETOX is made great. Jim Gillespie might not be the greatest director in the world but he is the right person to direct DETOX since he did a thriller with a killer movie, IKWYDLS. Detox will be GREAT...

    DETOX should be good

    by jason93

DETOX sounds like a good movie. Hopefully, it will come out this summer. Anybody have any info on another Stallone project called THE HUNTER? If the script ever gets done, this could be a great film.

    Detox and Tom Berenger

    by abking

DETOX is going to be a KICK ASS thriller. Tom Berenger should play well opposite Sly. He was really good in "The Last Of The Dogman" and "The Substitute". Stallone has taken a long time choosing his Universal projects (he has a 60 million contract for them) and DETOX should pay off.

    Rocky VI

    by iam2sly

I think that Rocky would be a great movie for Sly to do because everyone knows Rocky and that is one the main reasons that Sly is famous so if Sly does this movie then everyone one would want to watch it and it would make alot of money. Also they would want to see if the part of the great survivor Rocky Balboa would still suit Sly(now in his 50's). Imean how many 53 year old boxers do you know, but I think it would attract alot of people.
