From LONDON comes casting news/rumors about the casting of the BOND villian sidekick/bodyguard type
Harry here with yet more news of casting about BOND 19, this from London, I have absolutely no comment on this since I have no idea of who the guy they are talking about is. I just hope he's not another brainless thug that we know Bond will be able to beat easily. I'm tired of villians that you just KNOW Bond will kill in a slightly comedic way. Oh well, So here ya go...
I suppose you have got this from lots of your British readers, but this
is from The Sunday Times of 13th December 1998:
/**********************************************/
Goldwinger! Jonah Lomu, the New Zealand rugby player who single handedly
destroyed the England team, has been offered the job of cutting James
Bond down to size.
Film makers want him to reprise the role of Oddjob in a new 007 movie to
be filmed next year.
Lomu, 23, nicknamed "The Man Mountain", visited Pinewood studios in
Buckinghamshire last week for a meeting with the producers and director
of the movie, which starts shooting next month.
Oddjob was the fanatically loyal, muscle-bound Korean manservant to
Goldfinger in the 1964 film starring Sean Connery as Bond. His most
dangerous weapon was not a badly served vodka martini but a steel-rimmed
bowler hat which he threw like a Frisbee.
The film makers have still to decide on the name of the character in the
new movie, The World Is Not Enough, but it is likely that Pierce Brosnan,
the Irish actor who now plays Bond, will be faced with an Oddjob-style
adversary.
Lomu, who stands 6ft 5in and weighs 18st, more than matches the physical
attributes required, although a newspaper suggested John Prescott for the
role when it was revealed that one storyline involves a plot to blow up
the Millennium Dome ( * - John Prescott, by the way, is the deputy to the
Prime Minister Tony Blair, and opposes the building of the Dome! - * )
"The producers and directors loved him and think he is great and would
love him to be in the film. His role would be as a body guard, a baddy -
he would have to be, being his size", said Amanda Schofield, publicity
manager for Eon Productions, which will release the film next November.
Phil Kingsley-Jones, the winger's manager, said in Auckland that Lomu was
interested in the role but could not agree to a film deal before
consulting the New Zealand Rugby Union. He would first have to join the
British actor's union to get an Equity card.
He added, "Jonah is a big James Bond fan and it is very exciting news.
But nothing has been decided. Jonah's main goal is to play for the All
Blacks in next years World Cup and nothing comes before that."
In the past Lomu has portrayed himself as a big softie, saying he is more
afraid of his mother than anyone else. He keeps a cuddly bunny and bear
in his car.
Sophie Marceau, 31, the actress votes France's sexiest woman by Paris
Match, and Denise Richards, 26, who featured in Starship Trooper and Wild
Things, have both been signed up for the film. Locations include Turkey
and France.
Harold Sakata, the Hawaii-born Olympic silver medallist who played Oddjob
in Goldfinger, went on to a successful wrestling career in Britain as the
Great Togo. He died of cancer in 1982.
In the film Bond used the bowler hat as a means to electrocute his
opponent. The bowler was sold for 61,750 pounds at an auction in London
in September.

I've heard that he was offered a role, but had to turn it down due to rugby-season rigors.
-
Saw on MTV that Denise Richards will be the "Bond Girl" in Bond 19....... anyone else heard that?
-
First to the Disco Godfather...Hello!? It says Denise Richards is Dr. Christams Jones in the article above you.
Second the title...I've heard rumors the title has been changed to DEATH WAITS FOR NO MAN. And finally for all Bond Fans... When will they start adapting the wonderful novels of John Gardner and Raymond Benson for the screen?
AND BRING BACK S.P.E.C.T.R.E like
they did in the new novels...Food for thought. -
Denise Richards' casting is great news - she is the perfect beautiful bond babe and she gives good camp. Killer!
-
I wish they'd keep the title "The World Is Not Enough" - that's a fantastic irreverently existential title - I can already hear the opening song. Leave it! It's great!
-
I hope they DON"T adapt the Gardner novels- they unifornmly sucked. Wishy-washy pastiches of original dark Fleming-Bond and and goofy Moore-Bond. I mean, Scorpio? What the hell was that? They'd be much better off adapting some of the Dark Horse comic series that have come out sporadically over the years. Some of those had potential.
-
'tis true!!
-
Gardner's books really did suck. The first two were about on par with Flemming's worst and they went down hill from there. But then I didn't think most of Flemming's books were that great either.
They really should bring back SPECTRE though. It makes more sense in this terrorist prone world as well. The villains of the recent Bond flicks have been kind of. . .lame.
-
The SPECTRE organization is part of the rights owned by Sony, becuase it was created by someone other then Ian Fleming. The only way for it to make it's way into a "legit" Bond flick is for Sony to sell UA/MGM the rights, and that, my friends, ain't gonna happen. If Sony gets to make their film, they'll probably use SPECTER, but then again, they'll probably have Emmerich direct it, so it'll suck no matter what.
-
If there is one book out there that puts both Gardner and Benson to shame its Robert Markham's (Kingsley amis) Colonel Sun. Published shortly after Flemming's death and after amis' bond dossier work. It has the Bond you wish were still around - women, killings, torture, political intrigue. Its out of print but worth the hunt. would make a far better basis for a new film than the other stuff out there.
-
I've heard that Sharon Stone is going to play Blofeld's daughter - a plot which resembles one of Gardner's stories.
Perhaps Stone should play Blofeld's daughter being the new kingpin of SPECTRE - holding the world to ransom or in the case of "The World is Not Enough" the oil fields of the Middle East.
The SPECTRE thing needs to be sorted out - are they dead or not?
And why does Brosnon always try to copy Moore rather than Connery? His acting is good - but the jokes, the comedy - heck even the over the top action is so Moore...
I know that Mr Brosnon is a keen reader of the Bond books, perhaps he should get back to reading and portraying Bond as he is in Fleming's books...and not as the celoiud's classics? -
I don't see why the Bond producers can't adopt the John Gardner or Raymond Benson novels. They weren't any better or worse than the Ian Fleming books (which, aside from the travelogue, weren't all that great). And quite frankly, I'm getting sick and tired of hearing criticism of Roger Moore's Bond. May I remind you folks out there, that the comic-book style in Bond films started in GOLDFINGER, with Connery acting like an overgrown, sexist schoolboy. By the way, Brosnan isn't copying Moore's style - quite frankly, he has no style and I don't think he ever will.
-
Bond films today are the best since Sean Connery's day.
Let's geta imformal poll going
BEST BOND FILMS:
1.GOLDFINGER
2.FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
3.THE SPY WHO LOVED ME
4.LISENCE TO KILL
5.GOLDENEYE

Has eveyone seen the teaser for Austin Powers 2?
It is fantastic! Check it out on his web site at www.austinpowers.com -
To most americans Jonah Lomu will mean nothing, but in any country that plays rugby Jonah Lomu is the equivilent of that Mike Jordan guy I keep hearing about. The guy is one big huge strong man, famous for basically running into opponents and making them fall over and cry mummy! However his acting talents might leave something to be desired :-).
(this is from a transplanted kiwi who prays to god for rugby on ESPN because I MIISSSSS IT!) -
Well I find that to be not a very good reason. Sony does not own the name SPECTRE, they own the rights to Thunderball...hence why they made Never Say Never Again and proposed Thunderball 2000 as their next Bond flim. SPECTRE was created by Fleming, they are in several of his novels. Someone at Sony didn't think up the name. I believe that the reason is a super-organization might seem to cartoonish nowadays, but hen again isn't a Bristish secret agent saving the worls every two years a little on the cartoony side? BRING BACK SPECTRE!
-
Someone please tell me how much 18 stones is.
-
18 stones is 114kg which I think is about 250 pounds. Also Lomu runs 100 meters in like 10.8, dam he can move.
-
Okay, I cannot stomach Denise Richards for a Bond movie. But, I guess she is perfect for a Bond girl, since you don't have to know how to act to be a Bond girl...Anyway...has anyone heard anymore about Ewan McGregor being in the new Bond film?? I hope he is...he is so awesome!!! And, as for the theme song for the new Bond film...the Spice Girls, all the way. They're perfect to sing the theme.
