Brian Blessed Talks On British Radio About STAR WARS EPISODE ONE. SPOILERS
Here is a report from England about an interview Brian Blessed did this morning on RADIO ONE. Blessed plays Boss Nass, if memory serves, who is not a Jedi as he claims in this article, it's been established for quite some time that Blessed played a member of Jar Jar's race. But here's the interview anyway...
I've not been in touch before but here's some amazing news i've just heard here in the UK.
Brian Blessed has just been a guest on Radio One on the Simon Mayo show. Now, he's starring in Episode One (which i wasn't aware of) as some sort of leader of '50 million Jedis' and apparently he has to appear in front of all these Jedis as their leader!!! He said he rides around on a dinosaur throughout the movie (i'm sure he doesn't literally mean a dinosaur - probably some sort of mammoth or similar Star Wars entity??). He also said his character lived on a world which was covered in water and was full of 'mechanical fish' and strange creatures!!
He said most of the work he'd done had been in front of a blue screen and that he'd worked with Liam Neeson and George Lucas had been great to work with. He was EXTREMELY enthusiastic and said the film would be brilliant. He was very genuine.
Hope this confirms things you may already know or even surprise you with new info.
KEEP THE DREAM ALIVE!!!
Dick Grayson, Boy Wonder
And here's how Colly heard it....
I've just heard Brian Blessed talking on (UK) Radio One FM, he was on the morning DJ Simon Mayo's regular God of the week slot, Thursday 3/12/98 11.15 am. Apart from talking about films & TV he talked about his role as Boss Nass in Star Wars Episode One. I didn't get all of it down, but he tried out for one role but thought he'd come over too strong. Then while working on something else and staying in a run down hotel he got a fax from Lucas asking him if he could build something up, around a Jamaican/something else accent. Brian then went on to talk about how he's playing Boss Nass on a CGI world which is mostly water but with some stunning landscapes, it includes electric fish and dinosaurs [he could have meant cgi]. The Boss NAss character plays a reluctant hero, and Brian has some scenes with Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor. Apparently Boss Nass gets the last line in the film. Most of Brian's scenes were against a blue screen and apparently the effects guys will be making the cgi of the half-man seal really convincing so that they come across as people more than the human parts. They will also be getting 6-8 track recording for their vocals so that they come across better.
In one scene Brian's character apparently is in front of an army of jedi and Naboos and has to inspire them, according to Brian [doing a Lucas impression] he's got 5 million guys in front of him to inspire and Lucas wants a key line form him. Brian goes "blurlahlahlahlah", and as he says Lucas loves it and goes print that.
Sorry I can't give you a complete transcript but I was listening and now typing at work.
all the best

I'm marginally gutted about this article. I was listening to it at work and was contemplating telling you about it, but Mr. Deaf Grayson beat me to it. I'm sorry Dick (almost apt), but Brian Blessed never said he played a Jedci leader. He said he played the leader of the Gungans. Now I don't know if this is an actual fact, but that's definitaly what he said. And I heard that quite clearly over a fork lift truck that was three foot away. I don't mean to offend Mr. Grayson, but he really needs to clean his ears out before next summer, otherwise Episode One ain't gonna make a lot of sense.

So, what are the odds that the critter emerging from the fog in the first scene of the trailer is one of these dinosaurs?

Hey guys. May i apologise for the Brian Blessed as Jedi error. I admit i must have misheard that bit of crucial info. but i hope the rest was helpful to all you believers. No need to get an attitude about it though - at least i bothered to post the information. Dick Grayson

you know, its strange. I just saw the trailer again last night (a bugs life, for the second time) and I got to get a closer look at the creatures comming out of the mist (I was actualy breating this time around, that made it easier:) The creatures comming out of the mist are almost certainly being ridden by something resembling Jar Jar, you can see the long "ears" floping around as the rider moves from side to side... so chances are thats the "dinosaur" being refered to here hang in there, its only... how many more months... aw crap :)

Add a few more months for us Brits. I can't believe Brian Blessed is in the prequels. I had no idea the star of Flash Gordon and various other over the top perfomances was involved. I'm a little worried now about the quiality of the film. Shame I missed the interview though.

Cheer up Dick Grayson, u just may be the next Publishers Clearing House winner. We all make mistakes Boy Blunder. I am sure your mother regrets giving birth to U everyday.

One of the inspirational lines in the film is "blurlahlahlahlah"? Um...George? You really need to stop snorting that paint thinner. Really man. You'd got me worried.
Dec. 3, 1998, 11:59 a.m. CST
Man you guys are uptight. I admit, Dick's article was a bit off on the facts, but Christ people, you're chastising him like he's Jon Peters (if you don't know who Jon Peters is then be glad you don't). Lucas' regards to the "blahblahblah" line should be read: insert tongue in cheek, fasten sarcasm cap. Do you really believe Lucas would fall so far into idiocracy as to take that line in all seriousness? Valium is your friend....stop drinking Drano

I think those creatures being ridden out of the fog are the same ones seen later in the trailer. In the scene where these large tank like vehicles are mowing down a forest chasing people, you can see these creatures (I think they look like cows) running away.

Just wanted to say I love Brian Blessed."Flash Gordon" 1980 from Dino D. is so bad it's good.Check out Brian and pre-Bond Timothy Dalton arguing over a fuckin' ice crystal in front of Max Von Sydow and the crazy Peter Wyngarde! "We owe everything to Flash!" "HAIL FLASH!"
Dec. 3, 1998, 4:24 p.m. CST
Maybe the Gungan's are strong in the force, and that is why Blessed says he is the leader of 50 million Jedi. Think about it.

...could I just recommend to people who are relying on this site for all their 'insider' news to actually have a good look around starwars.com? ...there's plenty of stuff there...background info and stuff. The 'watery planet' is probably naboo, and I think that thing coming out of the mist at the start of the trailer is a Nuna (go look at the pictures of the Nuna at starwars.com, see what you think), with something riding on it. But that's just what I think, and I've got no more of an idea than the rest of you *shrugs*.

My take is that those big "tanks" barrelling through the forest are troop carriers with battle droids inside. I think you see them again later in the trailer behind the formation of battle droids, but now with thier huge front hatches open. ??? I'm gonna go get a life now.

I know it's a terrible movie, but I've always secretly loved Dino's "Flash." I'm a film critic for a newspaper, so I must never let this be known, but..."Hail, Vultan!"

Check out Brian Blessed in Branagh's Henry V, or especially in the first of Rowan Atkinson's Black Adder series. There's a guy who can motivate people with a good primal scream. And judging by the looks of Jar-Jar in the trailer and the statement that Boss Nass is a "reluctant hero," it seems like the Gungans are going to be played for some measure of comic relief. Standing in front of an army of Jedi and letting loose a whoop to encourage them seems like a tension-breaker. Also, I believe an earlier story a month or so ago described Blessed performing for the camera; apparently the line is less a "blahrahlahrah" thing and more a "hopping-up-and-down-and-bellowing-maniacally" thing. That's my 1.28 cents...

Hello, my name's Jude and I work on the Simon Mayo Show. To stop you all from killing (the admitedly slightly misguided) Dick Grayson, and in the general interest of letting all of you enjoy tearing apart what he said I'm going to transcribe the interview and post it on the Radio 1 web site at some point today. The address is bbc.co.uk/radio1. OK? And to you yanks... be grateful... we've still got 14 days till we get to see the trailer on the big screen!

it's just too bad. TPM would be so much better if we were all to be surprise.. How can you cry now Harry since you know what's gonna happen already? :) BTW - I wonder if Lucas ran out of funds to paid his secret police to cut down on leaks?
