Mr Moto Returns with a SPOILER filled report on EPISODE 2 & 3

Published at:  Dec 03, 1998 5:37:39 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

Hey folks, Harry here again,
and this time with another
Mr
Moto

report.  Mr Moto
was very very happy with the handling of the first report, but saw that
some of you doubted him.  This was to be expected of course, since
EVERY SPY gets doubted, especially whenever the words.... STAR WARS are
used.   I tried to explain that this is merely part of the fun
of it all.  But still Mr Moto was determined to continuing with the
quid pro quo he had established.
THERE
ARE MASSIVE POTENTIAL SPOILERS COMING UP, BEWARE DO NOT PROCEDE LEST YE
BE SPOILED!!!!

"Harry-san, I'm going
to be very kind to you today.  The same rules apply as before, but
I will be  quite a bit verbose this time.  You must remind everyone
that I am part of the Lucasfilm world, though you must not allow my part
to be known.  The knowledge I have does not come from the scripts,
and I make no pretense to having read the Episodes 2 or 3 drafts.
In fact I know of nobody that has, besides the guys at the top of the family.
To start this time Harry, you can choose one character about whom you would
like to know more about for the forthcoming films.  Name him and I
will begin."

Oh sh*t!  This is
like friggin Sophie's Choice.  Dagdumit!  Normally right off
the bat I would want to know about Boba Fett, but since in our prior electronic
conversation, the wonderful Mr Moto said that he wasn't very sure about
how his inclusion would be handled.  Palpatine.  Yesssss.

"Senator Palpatine/The
Emperor," I responded.

"Ah, it is the side of
evil that stirs your thoughts Harry.  Very well, let us begin," Moto
wrote.

"Senator Palpatine will
move into high gear beginning in the second chapter of the Star Wars Saga.
The man will be the very visage of power and extravagance, while being
the Supreme Chanchellor by the end of the first film, there is still much
for Palpatine to aspire to.  He's a power player, a wizard behind
the curtains that pulls the strings, and he will of course be quite successful.
It is being collected from various sources here that he will be a man of
many hats.  Allegedly with 'Spice mines' and as a 'Slave trader' (which
we will have learned from the first film has been outlawed in all the 'civilized'
areas of the galaxy).  However, where Palpatine WILL become the man...
we all know he can become, will be with the assistance of his personal
army, a very rich trade I assure you.  This army is made up of The
Future Mandalorian Warriors.  Here's a taste of how it all works.
Say you are a senator of a planet that is caught up in the agony of war.
Our dear Palpatine would come to you to negotiate for a price and (like
in Needful Things) a promise to help him in the Galactic Senate should
any debates be found to occur there.  It really is amazing how many
planets get caught up in the nastiness of war.  The end result seems
to always be additional power and a neverending debt from the war torn
planet to Palpatine."

"Now back on Coruscant,
Palpatine could very well be the largest property holder, in addition he
is highly respected, and his eye is upon the Presidency of the universe
or galaxy or however you want to phrase it.  With the spoils of wars,
he will throw his money about like rice upon a wedded couple.  Palpatine
will be a big part in bringing an end to quite a large conflict that occurs
in Episode 2.  This act will place him in the fast car aimed at the
checkered flag.  He will be the man of the people, and the people
represent the voice of the galaxy.  And it is this popularity and
stardom that swoons Anakin to his side."

"Harry-san, I can not
believe you chose Palpatine, there's a good deal of information that I
could continue telling you about him, but I am growing weary of the Emperor.
But know this, Palpatine is not alone, he has been cultivating a crop of
politicians, one early bloomer at this point (could be changed, but I believe
it will stay) will be Tarkin, who will be a shining beacon in the Coruscant
way of life, Palpatine latches on.  The character you chose Harry
will reach his apex in Episode 2.  He will be one of a handful of
politicians, mainly unknown characters at this point, that understand and
control the machinations of the Senate.  The next step for Palpatine
is to acquire a real Military Victory, something to beat his chest about.
So, he hires his own army (the future Empire) to...  I won't tell
you everything Mr Knowles.  Are you full, or do you want more my friend?"

I instantly responded
with, "ME STILL HUNGRY!!!"

And Mr Moto replied,
"You could go with a few less meals my friend, but as you wish.  What
did the information provoke in you?  What is your first question?"

Looking at the response
he gave me, I was tickled by the 'unknown characters' with the Galactic
Senate that also have the same or similar power to Palpatine.  I began
thinking and pondering... Was there a character of power that would have
been the right choice for the Senate, and who was he, and I asked Mr Moto
exactly that.

"Mr Knowles, very good.
I'm proud of you.  As I had mentioned he was at the top of his game,
and one of the few to control the Senate.  Another Senator, who I
must protect at this time, will be nearly as popular as Palpatine.
He understands without doubts the way of thing in the Senate, and he is
also a great military leader.  This senator will have a perfect military
record of victories, and the exclamation point will be another of the important
conflicts in the prequels.  The way of things in the Old Republic
were very simplistic, to achieve virtue, one must demonstrate their competence
on the field of blood, the battlefield.  This senator was like El
Cid or Caesar in that regard.  His political ascension was built upon
the shoulders of his victories as a field commander."

"In and around the middle
of this first trilogy, Coruscant became a hive of civil unrest and shady
political deals.  From the fields of battle came good news, and the
cityfolks hung upon every word.  Our mysterious Senator was charismatic
and quite an orator, his army was a thing of beauty, and he was an advocate
of the HUMAN destiny, it was to be his immortal message.  For HUMANS
were the highest form... for him.  He led his army across the galaxy
against the wishes of the senate.  It will be his attempt, or so it
will be alleged, that it will be a move to seize absolute power.
This will, Harry, not be allowed.  It can not, because if it is then
the very fabric of the Old Republic democracy will be torn asunder.
That is why the senate will act as it does.  This senator was given
the power to protect and uphold all the principles and values of the Old
Republic democracy.  This senator ventures down the dark path.
And this man will have embraced the dark side to build his NEW ORDER on
the ashes of the Old Republic and the mangled bones of the illustrious
Jedi."

"I know much is still
unclear, and I believe it should remain that way for quite some time to
come.  Be careful to not over analyze this, or to put too much stock
in it.  Much can change, but this is a bit of the framework.
At this advance stage many things can be brought together or be eliminated
all together.  Much of this has been gathered from memos and background
studies.  You would be amazed at how much background detail Lucas
puts into all of this.  What eventually ends up on screen is of course
in his hands."

"We are still merely
at the beginning; and still there is an infinity to go."

And then Mr Moto left.
It will be interesting to see what all the dude churns up.  This was
a ton, I think.  It'll be interesting to see, in three years, how
much of this will become part of the story as we hear it coming from Lucasfilm,
or if it will be disproven.  Will MR MOTO become a thing of legend,
or will we take these rumors to the pile where Charles Bronson's jedi character
lay and the pile where Ewan played OB1 and Darth Maul.  It will take
time.

    The Emperor

    by jaydub

It's good to hear that Palpatine is going to be complex character in the Prequels. The political manipulation he's going to cause adds an adult element to this sophisticated kids story. I read once that Lucas said that the Prequels (at the time he said if ever made) would be much more political than action oriented. After seeing the Trailer some thirty times, and now hearing from this Motto character I think it's safe to say Lucas is taking the middle ground.

    Yoda as a senator: yes.

    by admiral

Yoda as a senator? Could be. See, in the trailer something about Yoda felt bizarre.
It was the setting where he was. Too much contrast from his dark home in the Dagobah (sp?) system. It looks too clean, too bright. Where the hell is he?
What if he is a senator and that was his red senator chair glimpsed behind him? Then again this could be part of the Jedi Council (actually this would make more sense).
Then who is this mysterious senator? No other than: straight from Alderaan, Mr. Organa, Leia's adoptive father in ANH.

Yoda will be the character that oposes Palpatine. Look at what Motto said about Palpy being racist. Advances for the HUMAN race. So the logical person to opose him would be a non human - Yoda.

Just a guess for later discussion. Readers of the Zahn trilogy will understand this. Could the other senator be the future Grand Admiral Thrawn? I'm only throwing out another name for discussion, so do not rip me apart for thinking this way. I just don't see Yoda as a senator.

    The Mysterious Man

    by obi wan's clone

It probably can't be Senator Organa remember "Alderaan is peaceful we have no weapons". but then again who says the Princess wasn't lying. My bet is on Captain Antilles. Who says he wasn't in the Military first, gained popularity in the senate (no doubt because of his great military record, and then later went back into the military to fight "the cause" when politics didn't work. Of course, he died in episode 4 at the begining... darn it he'd have made a cool character.

    Senator Tarkin???

    by rich

My first guess as to the identity of the mysterious Senator Mr. Moto talks about was Bail Organa. After all he is a Senator and a military commander who serves in the Clone Wars with Obi-Wan. However, after reading further about the senator's racist beliefs that HUMANS are the destined ones and his use of military force to promote his ideas, it would seem to fit the persona of Tarkin. After all he was a military commander, seemed to have a higher ranking with the Emperor than even Darth Vader and Leia seemed to be all to familiar with his evilness when she confronted him on the DS. Perhaps she'd have had run-ins with him in the past on the Senate floor? Plus Mr. Moto had earlier mentioned that Palpy has attached himself with Tarkin.

I'm very interested to know if they are going to do anything w/ the characters of Han,Lando,Chewy, and the Millenium Falcon(that that it is a character, but).

I'd like to see something w/ the bet that won Han the MF and how he rescued Chewy, but I'm wondering if Lucas is going to stray from the story line, or if he can work it in somehow.

    Yoda? No way.

    by 433

Remember, Ewan MacGregor's uncle is Denis Lawson, OKA Wedge Antilles. Lawson is in the first trilogy playing his father, Senator Antilles. Works well, what with the whole military aspect. Yoda would be too busy on the Jedi High Council to be a Senator.

I anticipate the third film being not unlike the "Lone Wolf and Cub" movies. For those of you who aren't familiar with the films, they are about a ronin and his charge, a baby boy. Wouldn't it be cool having Ewan MacGregor in a big lightsaber battle with Luke (and/or Leia) strapped to his back like a papoose? It fits in with Lucas' love for Japanese samurai cinema. Just a thought.

I think that the mysterious senator Mr Moto was talking about will turn out to be Han Solo. Think about it, it's the only character that makes sense to be the senator. How else would they introduce Solo into the series? If it isn't him it's probably Darth Vader.

    The Honorable Mr. Moto

    by sardonicus

How wonderful that Mr. Moto continues to grace us with information, despite the initial doubt he faced from some of us, including myself. Thank you, Mr. Moto, for cool news now and in the future. As for the unnamed character Mr. Moto speaks of, my guess would be Bail Organa. He fought with Obi-Wan in the Clone Wars, he would be in a position to be a rival (political or otherwise) of Palpatine as a political figure on Naboo, and this unspecified wavering to the dark side that the character takes and Palpatine uses to his own advantage would be the reason he (and Leia) wind up on Alderaan. I can not believe how excited Sardonicus hs become by this new trilogy, so excited that I am considering a self-induced coma to make the time pass quickly until each film opens. Hail to you, Master Knowles, newsgiver of all that is coolest!

    Does anyone really think...

    by terrepin

...that a complicated, twisted, multi-character political story like this will actually be the basis for Eps. 2 & 3? Come on, folks, this is STAR WARS we are talking about. Ignore the non-canon novels and trading cards and half-rumors heard long ago...These are going to be fantasy adventure movies, with simple, well-defined aspects of GOOD and EVIL, not some convoluted political piece! Star Wars has always been about the characters, not grand sweeping political plans. How utterly disappointing would that be? I can see parents now, explaining to their children in the theaters - "No, you see, that man there, he's a Galactic Senator, and he is starting a false propaganda campaign in an effort to solidify his political and economic hold on the outlying systems...oh, forget it and play with your Undersecretary to the administrator of the Galactic Seat Action Figure..."

The point is, Mr. Moto's "scoop" is a load of hooey. He said a lot without saying anything at all. I don't know jack about the new films, but even I could dream up something like this..."Trust your feelings!"

In Timothy Zahn's second novel. We are introdudced to a man everyone thought was dead. He was leading a small resistance to the new empire lead by Thrawn. He had been a military leader in the latter stages of the old republic.
He was General Garm Bel Ibis. Pherhaps, this man is the one Moto speaks of.

You know, I am one of the webmasters of prequels.glade.net, and we spend most of our time (sad, isn't it?) trying to get the latest information on the PREQUELS in any way possible, but there is something about this Mr. MOTO guy, I'm just not sure I buy. Why is this guy taking pot shots at Harry ("You could afford to miss a few meals")? Who is he? Why should be trust him, and what the hell is he talking about most of the time? by bear@play

That was a good idea about General Ibis being the MS, and I'm sure he'll show up in the prequels, but I don't think he'll be the MS b/c the MS supposedly follows the dark path.

Grand Admiral Thrawn doesn't fit in either because he wasn't human so why would he be an advocate of humans?

My guess would be: (1) Tarkin or (2) Vader or maybe even (3)C'boath (sp?) The dark jedi from Zahn's first trilogy.

    by provoker

When I read Mr. Moto's comments, the first person that came to my mind was Garm Bel Iblis. I think it would ROCK if he showed up in the prequals. I mean imagine the continuity! DUDE. But it does seem that this person is stained with evil. What are you people talking about it might be Vader? Vader (who wouldn't even exist yet) would only be like 18 years old in the second movie. Duh! I don't think it could be Thrawn either. The rebels had never even HEARD of him when he surfaced in the Zahn novels. Senator Yoda??? I don't know, Yoda does not seem the political type. Based on what we know at this point Tarkin seems the only choice.

    by msjanke

I agree with some of the previous post-ers. Seems logical that Bel Iblis could well be this mysterious figure. My first thought was Organa, but he doesnt seem to fit with the facts we know about him.

But what about Mon Motha? I know Moto was throwing around "him" and "he," but that could just be cover. I do not recall a lot of the history about Mon Motha, but I do know she was active in this time period and it would make sense, since she was the leader of the Rebellion.

    Da good stuff

    by captain cattle

Alrighty...first of all, if you'd bother to research the character of Palpatine, you'd see that he is the one who puts humans above all other lifeforms. The New Order was put into place to make aliens second-class citizens. That's why wookiees, Mon Calamarians and other beings were made slaves (which in turn caused them to become the backbone of the Alliance).
Also, the big conflict menitoned was none other than the legendary Clone Wars. And if you read carefully, you'll find out that the Mandalorians (who've held a long grudge against the Jedi) were involved in this concflict, as well as Palpatine.
And about that stuff regarding if any of the novel characters will make it to the big screen...well, I'm not sure if Lucas will take characters he didn't create and incorporate them into the movies...but then again, Dash Rendar's Outrider was in ANH the Special Edition, and even though Ralph McQuarrie created an Imperial capital world (which was cut from the final draft of ROTJ), it was Timothy Zahn who gave Coruscant its name and made it into a world. Take that as you will...

Not Yoda Not Vader Not Tarkin SOME ONE NEW

    by deebee11

I think the whole point of this character would be that he is some one new without a fixed desitiny. this would free up some story line.
All the other characters we know where they are going, Anakin to Vader, Palpatine to Emperor. With a total new character we would be filled with a bit more suspense as to what will happen to him/her.

Do they survive their confrontation with palpatine?

The moment some one called Antilies turns up you lose the tension.

    MS--The Mystery Senator

    by matt hensley

Just a couple of things I wanted to mention. First of all, Mr. Moto: most of us believe you, but there are always a few naysayers. As for the MS, this guy is a racist who only wants the advancement of humans....He follows the dark side of the force....and is a military leader. That would eliminate Yoda (he didn't follow the darkside) It would get rid of Mon Mothma Bel Iblis and Antillies, none of them used the force at all. Of the nominees, C'baoth is the best choice...but would Lucas really incorporate one of Zahn's characters, I don't know about that. (By the way, to that guy who slammed on the novels and fanboys who are half his age: there's a little thing called freedon of speech) Also- is Dennis Lawson really playing Antilles in the prequels? That would be cool!!!

    by bramton1

Ok, get this. Solo won't be that mystery senator. Why? Because Solo won't be in the new trilogy. Personally, I think it's either Yoda or someone new. How about Billy Dee Williams? No, not Lando, just Billy Dee. Actually, I think they should add something to Empire Strikes Back. Have Vader say to Lando "Calrissian, you may be a scoundrel, but this is some damn smooth malt liquor." Come on, wouldn't you just love to see Lando and Vader kicking back with some Colt 45? Ok, now let's get serious. I love the story of Senator/Emperor Palpatine. I LOVE how the people will embrace him in Episode 2!! Classic!

I think that we should hold off speculation on Episode 2 and 3 until Episode 1 comes out. This is a brand new trilogy which we have barely any idea how the feel will be. I mean we are all use to the trilogy we know today, and use it for some of our speculation, but it was made back in the late seventies and on a shoestring budget. Now all of that has changed. When we see Episode 1, we will get the nineties feel of the new trilogy. That is where the real speculation begins.

Mr. Moto and Mr. Roboto are brothers

    by holonet

I have doubts about the article...
Mr. Moto clearly states that he hasn't even seen the treatments for Episodes 2&3 yet he goes into detail concerning Palpatine and the political tie-ins that are involved. Hmmmm....We all know Lucas is king at mis-informing those that work with him. Hell, the film crew didn't even know Vadar was indeed Lukes father until it was premiered and the voice-overs were finished. During actual filming on the set David Prowse's line was "Luke, I killed your father"
As to the political involvement of Episode 2&3....it's a "political" aspect...which means it's sketchy and unclear for sure...how can anyone say for certain on the specifics of who does what to who?
And for the novels and their possible tie-ins...give it up. Lucas has said many times that although the novels are canon in regards to the SW universe, they're not apart of his idealized story-line. Lucas doesn't seem to be one who would "want" or even "need" to appeal to the fanboys or the trash-novel base.

    ya know? this makes sense

    by auric goldfinger

Given Moto's latest, it's resonable to think Eps 2 & 3 go like this (briefly):
Ep2: Palpatine rises to power and popularity, parallelled by the MS. Palpatine is backed by the Jedi and the Force, MS by the Dark Side. At the end of 2, the only conquest left for either Senator is each other. Anakin is at Palpatine's side, and their limits of their goodness seem boundless.
Ep3: The "great conflict" leaves Palpatine the victor, but in a classic case of absolute power corrupting absolutely, Palpatine tries to contain the Dark Side and is instead consumed by it. The movie then focuses on the rise of Vader, the establishment of the Empire, the hunting of the Jedi (Yoda is probably presumed dead), the battle btw Anakin/Vader and Obi-Wan, and the spiriting away of Anakin's children.

While I get great Roman/Crusader vibes from 2, I get great spiritual vibes from 3, at least from what I see here--kind of a retelling of the Holocaust with overtones of the Ten Commandments.

Or, this could all be BS. But I think these general themes fit.

    Palpatine's Opponent Debate

    by boba fett

I want to also throw in my lot with the Mon Mothma suggestion noted above. I agree that maybe the "he" and "his" are some sort of cover. Another possibility that I think should be noted is Dodonna. What is his background? Could he be the senator? He pretty much ran the Battle of Yavin didn't he? I personally think that the books should be viewed as separate entities from the movies. I like to read then as fun stories but I don't generally accept their words as dogma.

    The evil Senator!

    by mr. bigglesworth

Whoa! What the hey happened to this page??? Everythings' all stretchified. Anyway, I held my Mace Windu figure under hot water until he told me who the evil Senator is. He says it's...noneother than Aunt Beru!!! And face it, she's the only one that makes sense. Remember how she consoled Owen's concerns about Luke with that I-ate-a-thousand-worlds-for-breakfast gleam in her eye. And those wide lapels she wore, I happen to know that Caesar Augustus, Napolean and Hitler all wore lapels exactly like her's--a dead giveaway.

    vader thought yoda dead

    by joe banks

In response to Kyle Bridges' question. Vader thought Yoda was dead. Yoda managed to conceal himself even from the Emporer. It is suggested in one of the Zahn novels that that cave on Dagobah was once the dwelling of a Dark Jedi and Yoda killed that Jedi. Using the dark force to conceal his presence in the Force. As far as I know that theory has yet to be proven or disproven.
Now the line I have a problem with is Ben's line in Episode IV that the lightsaber was a weapon of 'a more civilized time'. From most accounts it sounds like the new trilogy will be anything but more civilized.
Oh and the MYSTERY SENATOR, that is OBVIOUSLY CHIEF CHIRPA. I mean come on. He tried to roast Han Solo, Chewie and the rest. If it wasn't for being scared by Luke's Force they would have had Wookie Burgers that night.

    Star Wars trivia

    by bear@play

I have never seen so many Star Wars in my life! So could someone PLEASE answer this question about one of the Star Wars books? In the first novel of Zahn's first trilogy Luke has flashbacks of when he was seduced to the dark side and served with the Emperor. However Han and Leia saved him. When on earth did all this happen? Is there a book that I've missed or something?

    Kyle Bridges (Yoda&Anakin)

    by randall flagg

    From the ROTJ Novelization :
"'So tell me young Skywalker-who continued your training?' That smile again, like a knife. Luke held silent, struggling to regain his composure. The Emperor tapped his fingers on the arm of the throne, recalling. 'There was one called...Yoda. An aged Master Jed...Ah, I see by your countenance I have hit a chord, a resonant chord indeed. Yoda, then."

"[Anakin] wished, briefly, he'd met Yoda, to thank the old Jedi for the training he'd given Luke...but perhaps he'd be with Yoda soon, now, in the ethereal oneness of the Force."

It seems almost as if Darth does not recall knowing Yoda at all, even though Palpatine does. I imagine either that a)there still is some great secret(s) to revealed about Anakin or b) the meeting between Anakin and Yoda was very brief and, since he was so young, he did not remember it as being a significant event.

    Dagobah for a vacation!?!

    by vtofx

    It makes perfect sense. We
see Yoda as a functional citizen in the trailer of episode I.
Why then, would Yoda go to a crappy place like Dagobah. He
aint retired and Dagobah aint no senior citizen hang out like Florida. He is maybe hiding from something, or someone who either banished him from
chilling out on a beach resort or
he has a price on his head. Who could be so powerful and
want vengence so deeply. Perhaps Good ole Palpatine was P.O.ed that Yoda was giving him a bad wrap, so after dubbed emporer, he went after that fuzzy little muppet. It would also be quite poetic. Darth versus Obi-Wan, both jedi masters. Yoda versed Emporer both supreme jedi masters whoi had a falling out over the senate race. I dunno bout you, but I am placing a ballot on Yoda as the Emporer's opposing menace. Hey, if I win do I get a complimentary prize!?! If so send me a nice big canvas one sheet [I need a new security blanket to keep me warm those cold nights before May 21st].

Bail Organa ain't no "great" military commander who lives to kick ass (enemy and *alien* especially). Stop wit yo jokin' about Yoda and Tarkin. Tarkin is a Governor, more spacifically a Grand Moff, and although it's possible he could have been a Senator before that, he was never a rival of Palpatine. It will most likely be an original character. AND YOU MOTHERFUCKER! HELL YEAH YOU! What shit are you smokin' boy? Telling people that Mr. Moto is full of bullshit because he mentions Palpatine will be involved in politics. NO FUCKIN SHIT! He's not saying the whole movie will be a political thriller (although it damn well could be, who cares what the first films were like?). They're just saying one important sub-plot involves Senator Paplatine, who's a politician! He's in the goddamn goverment! MS and Palpatine

    by destro

I'm not sure what to think of Mr Moto. I just think he has been way too vague to really consider him trustworthy, or even label this spoiler material (notice how often he mentions that this information could radically change). If what Mr Moto is saying is true, it would be rather difficult for Lucas to backpadel and alter the plotline. I mean he's been plotting out the prequels for years and years.

Anyway, if Mr Moto really does know his stuff, and really is as clever as he would like us to believe, than it seems to me when he refers to the MS and Palpatine, it leads me to believe they are one and the same person. Now I would imagine that no one believes that Palpatine was seduced by the
Dark Side during the prequels. His conversion took place before the prequels. It is poor Anakin that is seduced, Palpatine's allegiance with the force is not in question.
Of course, to rise in power, Palpatine puts on the illusion that he is somewhat good (after all who would open their arms to that maniac in Return Of The Jedi). Perhaps behind the scenes, he is acting like this mysterious senator. This way he can begin to orchestrate his evilness while putting on the "good" front to attain higher office, wielding more power. Perhaps if the mysterious senator is not Palpatine itself, it is a "puppet" orchestrated by Palpatine.

I wish people wouldn't bash the Zahn novels so much. If any novels were considered truly canon, it seems his novels would be the first choice. And, supposedly, it was Zahn that gave the Imperial worlds name Coruscant. I don't think it is a stretch to also use Zahn's description of the Emperor as a racist, biased to humans. That makes a lot of sense.

I think the events of Episode 1 should help bring to light some of Palpatine's motives. I wish Moto would dish a little Episode 1. At least that's based in stone for the most part. This speculating on Episodes 2 and 3 while not knowing what exactly will occur in Episode 1 seems silly.

    Get a Grip!

    by jim marshall

You Star Wars guys/gals really need to get a grip (and a life). Calm down -- it's only a simple fantasy, and one aimed at children to boot.

I'm a lifelong lover of Sci-Fi novels and films and even attended the first showing of Episode 4 here in Wash. DC back in the '70s. There was no line as I recall. However, I only wish that Lucas has read the Dune trilogy back in the '60s. Then we'd be part way through a truely great saga at this point.

Since I've not read any of the Star Wars novels (nor will I), can someone explain Lucas' connection to the novels and how they may influence has writing of episodes 1-3 and 7-9?

    Star "Wars"

    by marty

Did anyone notice how he talked about the great leaders being MILITARILY great? This could give the entire idea of "Star Wars" a new spin. I would like it. Lucas has said that when we see the new triogy we will never be able to view the current trilogy the same... whether you like it or not, these movies are going to change your view of the Star Wars myth.
Another thing I've noticed... Moto said in the last post that Naboo will be a major planet in all three episodes... but it will be drasically different in all three... Here's my guess at whats up- You know how Naboo is supposed to be hollow? Why? No, I'm not asking why in the sense of "geologically", but why would Lucas write this into the script? There has to be a major plot point here somewhere. I bet that Palpatine is secretly constructing something "inside" Naboo, away from the prying eyes of the Senate... What? THE DEATH STAR. How would that change you're impression of the Trench battle in episode 4... knowing that it used to be the beautiful planet Naboo?

    by sws

First off, I believe Yoda is in such a lavish setting in the trailer because he is obviously in some Jedi headquarters/training school. Think about it, Jedi are revered and respected at around this time. You can even see Anakin in a shot where he is centered at some sort of council that I can only guess would be Jedi judging whether he is this "saviour" or whatever Schindler is babbling about. Neverless, I couldn't choose a mystery senator. Bail Organa helped found the rebellion in secrecey due to what he was seeing in the Senate so I can't think of it being him. Fett doesn't fit the persona. He has always been a man for hire with few words and working solo (pun intended). More than likely we might see a whole new character rather than someone we know. And remember, I haven't seen it yet but Captain Antilles is in no way related to Wedge. Well, they may be distant relatives, but Lucas never mentioned it as fact I don't think. Even the first novel had a different name for him.

Han Solo was a pilot in the imperial navy and rescued chewbacca from some sort of slave enviroment before winning the falcom from lando. any thoughts of him as the MS isn't very logical. but anyway, why do you all insist on debating a movie meant to entertain? what's the point in finding out what its all about before you see it? which raises another point; you all seem so die hard that you will ALL go see any Star Wars movie no matter what, so why debate what you think are stupid plot points?

Uhm... Vader never fought Luke in the first Star Wars (by means of lightsaber) so when he said "Obi-Wan has taught you well" he was referring to what Obi Wan had already taught him. Vader had never seen Luke in action. Even though Obi-Wan was dead he (vader) assumes that luke learned from Obi-Wan before he died.

    Tarkin? Yoda?

    by ir8muthuh

If anything, this senator will be an as yet, unheard of character. One person it will most definitely not be is Grand Moff Tarkin. Tarkin just smacks of being a small time bureaucrat who eventually works his way up to being in charge of a huge project (e.i. the Death Star) he hopes will advance him to a higher level. No way he is going to be Palpy's biggest rival in the Senate and settle for this years later. This senator is assassination bait if ever a character was. This leaves out characters we know will survive the trilogy, like Bail Organa (he has to adopt a kid born at the end of the third movie and keep his rank for her to become a princess). Yoda is another character I would never consider. "Wars not make one great." Yoda is one of the biggest bleeding heart peaceniks in the universe. No way is he going to be an ambitious military senator. Plus, the comment about him living in too clean an environment; he lives on Dagobah because the immense amount of life (read Force) serves to hide him. It is not his home world. The biggest joke is the inclusion of Han Solo in this list. How old will he be in the second movie? Eight or nine? Hardly great military commander material. I hope Lucas will present us with a mature storyline like this, in the next few movies. There is plenty of room for action in political intrigue, and as fan in good standing since 1977, I think I am mature enough to take it. The kids will come around to it eventually.

    by falconer

My vote would be with the future Boba Fett. In Eps 4-6 he was a man of few words but in the novels he has a rich and complex backstory. His was not always the trade of scalps; Fett wears the Mandalorian armor as the last sign of his rebellion from Palpatine.

Bel Iblis is a good choice too, but will GL use a character he did not create himself?? Hmmm....

Building the Death Star inside Naboo would be pretty damn freaky. But hey, anything is possible -- after all, George is building a Death Star inside the Earth, why can't Palpatine do it with Naboo? Jedi = Jews? (Not an anti-semetic post)

    by -dolemite-

Since everyone is speculating, I'll give it a shot too:

Alright, Moto said (if he's for real) that it would be a military leader. In the list of possible candidates we shouldn't rule out jedis. After all, in ANH, Leia's message reffers to ben as 'General Kenobi'. So we have the possibility here that the opposing MS may be a Jedi. Secondly, somewhere along the way, the Jedi have to become villified in the public eye, or else people would have thrown a fit when Palpatine turns against them. Maybe Moto is 'covering' a bit by saying that the MS starts down the dark path. What if it's all a smoke screen Palpatine uses to turn public opinion against the jedis who could smack his ass down real fast if they got a chance? A little campaign of disinformation that the Jedis are a group of racist elitists who want to sieze power from themselves, and the public xenophobia of people with 'mystery' powers kicks in and they DEMAND the emperor to hunt down and exterminate the jedi and let him declare martial law for the defense of the state. In doing so, they also help secure his grasp for power. Kinda like the Holocaust analogy, the Jedi's become like the jews: a common 'enemy' for everyone to rally around.

    Just A Theory...

    by affejungen

It's interesting to note that while Alderaan is a "peaceful planet" that has no weapons, Bail Organa did fight in the Clone Wars alongside General Kenobi....
So, what if Bail were this mysterious Senator raising all this ruckuss (and serving as a perfect foil for Palpatine's own schemes) but Obi Wan manages to steer him away from the dark path just in time before it consumes him and Organa cleans up his act.
Remember, Lucas loves the concept of Leitmotif, and by successfully redeeming Bail, it would set Obi Wan up to be overly confident when he later tries to save Anakin.
Could also explain why Vader and Tarkin were so cavalier about vaporizing Alderaan, which was, after all, a very important core world.

    Quoting Moto about the Palp,

"It is being collected from various sources here that he will be a man of many hats. Allegedly with 'Spice mines' and as a 'Slave trader' "

In an earlier post by Moto he said in episode 1 we will not have been introduced yet to a character that will be introduced in episode 2. He said the character will be a major part of both trilogies.

Chewie was a slave. Chewie has a long life span. Chewie wouldn't have to be played by an actor who has obviously aged. Chewie could be another link to the 4-6 trilogy.

    Think Chewie.

    Novel facts

    by jhett dark

Before anybody else talks about who the Mystery Senator might be, consider this: While the Novels might not be considered to be 100 % fact, they have been authorized by LFL. All of the authors are given tons of paperwork telling them specifically what they can and cannot write about. For example, an earlier post suggested that the Senator might be Boba Fett. Not likely, since Jaster Mareel (BF) already has a history documented. While this might be considered true canon, I find it hard to believe that LFL would completely abandon all continuity. Personally, I think that Garm Bel Iblis fits the description Mr. Moto gave most closely. I hope that is not the case, though, as I really don't like the idea of incorporating the post film characters into the prequels. One thing fighting on the side of Iblis could be the fact that he has an entry in the Star Wars: Behind The Magic CD-ROM. Very few people from the books have one.

    Naboo, Palpy, Yoda etc...

    by 124fikyiv

Very interesting analogy regarding the Jedi and Jewish Holocaust. In the 2nd & 3rd episodes Palpatine will orchestrate the Clone Wars, a conflict which will have major repercussions for the most populated worlds of the Galaxy.
With many of these worlds lying in ruin, the Jedi will be blamed and Palpatine will be seen as a great savior with his great army rebuilding the worlds of the Galaxy. The planet Naboo's major civilian centers will fall into ruin, and because of intense orbital bombardment the planets crust will collapse ( it has already been established that Naboo is peculiar as far as planetary crust structure is concerned- the planet is hollow ) thus sending all higher lifeforms to seek refuge elsewhere ( thus providing Yoda
with an excellent place of exhile, the lifeforce remains to shield him ) After which the Queen gives birth to the twins.
Soon after, Obi-Wan spirits her away to the planet Alderaan.
Luke is then taken to live on the planet Tatooine with Obi-Wan's brother-in-law, Owen Lars...

That 25 lines with pants thing was a blast, you should try to get the "pants" dubbed into the scenes and sell it on video.

BTW, Watched ESB last night for the hell of it and picked up on a line from Luke right after R2D2 is regurgitated by the swamp thing after they land on Dagobah. He says something like "I don't know, this place..its like a dream"

Could luke have been on dagobah before when he was very young? Fuck it, lets go whole hog, is Dagobah actually Naboo after a complete annihilation of its inhabitants? Did Padme give birth on her home planet?

And goddammit, Luke is out there on hoth scanning for lifeforms, no readings, relays this to Han..and then gets clobbered by a goddam snowmonster! Is that not a lifeform? It was right behind him! So anyway, he wakes up plastered to the ceiling like a frat boy prank, manages to levitate his lightsaber and cut himself free, cuts the arm of the snowmonster....and then bolts outside into the cold! It was all warm and cozy in the ice cave, why didn't he just put the snowmoster out of its misery and hang out down there for a while? Now the damn snowmonster has one arm and has to explain that to his wife.

And for everyone bitching about Yoda's voice, listen to him before he revealed that he was the jedi luke was looking for...Fozzie bear in yodelling class. The difference in tone he assumes after he is revealed as yoda has tremendous impact..especially during the " You will be, You will be" exchange, and the "No, there is another" scene (which is one of the most powerful of the trilogy). Yoda will not disappoint.

In esb, I noticed that R2's beeps showed up as verbage on Luke's x wing console as they were flying to Dagobah, but with my small monitor I couldn't make out the words..anyone know what R2's comments are..gibberish?

    The Mystery Senator

    by darqueguy

Okay, here's a question: what is Han Solo's lineage? Is it possible that there could be a Senator Solo who is an uncle or a father or something? Moto said it was a surprise, and I think that Mon Mothma, Dondonna, Organa, Antilles and the others mentioned wouldn't be enough of a reason to keep it from us. I'm guessing Han had a relative who was involved in politics before the rise of the Empire.

    Completely off the topic.....

    by frank rizzo

A thought just came to me while reading all of this: Where are all the breast-feeding crybaby fanboys who were pouting about "The Phantom Menace" not being as cool as "Balance of the Force"??? Or whining about the character names, or the plot (which no one really knows the details of) or the fact that Boba Fett will not be the main character, or the fact that NOBODY from the books will necessairily make an appearance? They seem to have shut their pie openings ever since Harry went to a password system and the trailer came out.....come on, guys, I know you are still out there looking at this site, so let's hear some of you 'fess up-- "I was wrong to believe my vision of Ep.1 could be better than GL's, and I admit that TPM is gonna be one badass movie!" Say it. SAY IT!!!

    What if....

    by vtofx

What if, it turns out in episode III that Obi-Wan and Bail Organa had a little fun. Anakin is so P.O.'ed he offed Obi-Wan in episode VI. Then in Episode VII, all of the cast finds a warp to our universe and go incognito as Star Wars fans. In Episode VIII the Luke and Leia find out from the spirit of ObiWan that he was their true father. And finally Episode IX consists of nothing but Luke, Leia, and the spirits of Anakin, Bail, and Obi Wan, appearing on an episode of Jerry Springer. Luke and Jerry end up facing off in a battle using only the force. We discover that Jerry Springer is Luke's great uncle who turned to the darkside of television talk show hosts and ultimately destroys Luke. Hmmm.... possible, I think so. Especially since the mystery senator is actually Jerry Springer [making a cameo appearence as he persueds Mace Windu to purchase the Brooklyn Bridge; which draws a comparison in episode VI's purchase of the droids]

    Yoda kicks ass!

    by matt broben

Do you reckon we will get to see Yoda in action with the good ol' trusty light sabre? After all he is a Jedi Master so he should be a bit of a hot shit with one - and he won't be such an old fart in these! It's just that I have an image I can't get out of my head of Yoda doing sommersaults in the air waving a light sabre around.

Mr. Moto, who trained the Emperor?

    by 201406

It seems to me that this is a critical question and hints at an even more powerful "force" behind the Emperor. Thanks to Mr. Moto, we have a fairly clear idea of how
Palpatine engineered his rise to power. But, we still don't know how he acquired his mastery of the force.

Was he merely trained by the Dark Lords of Sith? Is he self-taught? Or is he the pawn of some godlike power? Will this entity play a role in the prequels or perhaps in eps #7, 8, &9??

Harry, if you're reading this, this would have been a good question to ask.

    YODA WITH A SABER?

    by bond

to whomever suggested Yoda use a lightsaber because he would not be as old in TPM, Yoda tells luke that he has taught Jedi for eight or nine hundred years (i forget exactly) but anyway, that would mean he is probably a little older than that. that would mean he is still at least about 750 years old in TPM. i mean, Anakin is only 9 and Darth Vader wasn't much older than 50 at most, so not much time has lapsed in the course of the first three and second three episodes, only maybe 40 or 50 years. do you think that maked Yoda young enough to galavant around playing hero? (especially because he is so important as a leader, too?)

    Luke is the Emporer's Grandson

    by eagle

If Luke and Leia were brother and sister, who was their mother.

Ben hid them from Vader at their birth so that the Emporer would not have them.

Was Vader's wife the daughter of
    Palpatine or perhaps the
    daughter of the Mystery Senator.

    Is the Emporer Luke's grandfather?

Also , how does Ben end up back on Tattoine as an old man.

We are told that Vader hunted down and killed all of the Jedi Knights. Kenobi tells Luke that he is the last one.

Episode three would have to have some reference to Vader killing the Jedis.

At the beginning of Episode 4 Vader seems to be more of an underling (similar to a Bond henchman) than have the authority he exercises in Episodes 5 and 6.

It seems unlikely that Vader would have been a great senator and then fallen to being an intergalactic odd-job.

I don't think that Vader is the mystery Senator assuming this to be a true character.

    OTHER SENATOR

    by sigma chi

FIRST OF ALL I WOULDN'T WORRY ABOUT THE NEXT 2 FILMS BEING POLITICAL THRILLERS. OBVIOUSLY EPISODE 2 WILL DEAL WITH THE CLONE WARS, AND EPISODE 3 WILL DEAL WITH ANAKIN BECOMING VADER. I THINK IN ORDER TO MAKE SENSE OF ALL OF THIS YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT THE HISTORY OF OUR WORLD. SEVERAL PEOPLE COMPARE THE EMPEROR TO HITLER. IF THAT IS TRUE THEN COULD YOU ALSO CONCLUDE THAT PALPATINES RISE TO POWER WILL BE SIMILAR TO HITLERS. THIS OTHER SENATOR IS COMPARED TO CEASER SO HE HAS TO BE VERY AMBITIOUS. IF PALPATINE IS LIKE HITLER (FAR RIGHT WING EXTREMIST OR NAZI) HIS OPPONENT WOULD BE ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE (LEFT WING EXTREMIST OR COMMUNIST) LIKE STALIN. IF ANACIN MARRIED A PRINCESS AND IS A PRINCE WOULD IT MAKE SENSE THAT HE COULD ALSO BE A SENATOR. IT SAID THAT THIS SENATOR FALLS ONTO THE DARK PATH. ALSO, WHAT WOULD BE MORE CRULE MAKING KILLING YOUR POLITICAL OPPONENT OR MAKING HIM YOUR SLAVE. ANYWAY THATS JUST MY TAKE ON IT, BUT TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH IT WOULDN'T MAKE TOO MUCH SENSE FOR PALPATINE TO HAVE AN OPPONENT WHO WANTS TO WIPE OUT EVERY RACE BUT HUMANS IT SOUNDS LIKE THATS WHAT PALPATINE WANTS. I THINK THAT THE CLONE WARS WILL CAUSE A GREAT DEPRESSION AND PALPATINE LIKE HITLER WILL BRING THEM OUT OF IT BY RISING TO POWER.

kindry remove them yourself mr moto

    by gstargrave

Harry you might want to make this your top story. I've finally figured out Lucas' plan. I believe that Lucas is going to astonish us all when he let's us in on Solo's secret: now we all know that these trilogies are part of a much larger story called the journal of the whills, so, I think in the context of the larger story we will find out that Han Solo is what I like to call (and what someone in another story entirely mistaken referred to the sandman's family as) an eternal. That's right, it will turn out that Han Solo is an eternal, he does not age. Further, I'd say that everything in these trilogies are just some strange game created and controlled by the eternal Solo. That's why he played such an important part in the second trilogy, that's why Vader had to have him frozen, it wasn't a test of the chamber to make sure Luke would survive, Luke was never a threat, the whole time the true target was Solo. How did Vader know that Solo was such a threat? Because the Emperor knew him from his old Senate days when Solo was his chief rival. So there you go. If you'd like you can tell your friends about this, in a few years when we have another part of the story they will see how right you were. Another thing I figured out is that Darth Vader was not Luke's father. It turns out that Anakin Skywalker only appeared as Darth Vader for the final battle against Luke. In episodes 4 and 5 and most of 6 the true Vader was toying with Luke by telling him he was his father. Where was Anakin that whole time? He was frozen by the emperor. Frozen by the emperor and eventually thawed, drugged, and mind-controlled to be made to fight Luke in that thrilling saber battle. The Emperor didn't want to risk losing the true Vader, so he decided to put Anakin in the Vader costume and have Luke kill his own father, this would so enrage Luke that he would be forced to give in to his hate, at that time his journey toward the dark side would be complete. Therefore the true Darth Vader is the mysterious senator.

To start with a quote nobody heard of... I've got a bad feeling about this - about Mr.Moto being Mr.Lucas, I mean. And I would be very happy if my feelings were right. You know, all that stuff about the Internet as a way to communicate with the common people around the world, plus all that other stuff Harry's "philosophy of reviewing" summarizes so well.
In case: Mr. Lucas, if you're reading this message, I just wanted to thank you for your films (all of them) - one of the best reasons to love just watching moving images.

    The Mysterious Senator

    by ithilwen

I think (I hope) we will see the contrast between the rising Emperor Palpatine and Mon Mothma. The consequences would be: (1) I would be pleased by a tough female character (2) to understand imediately who's "that woman" in ROTJ the day we'll watch the six movies in the correct order (3) to see not just lightsabre duels (that I need as chocolate) but *word" duels as well. You know, a screenplay as good as the ESB one... I'm not scared by politics to be boring (perhaps because I'm European): it could give some more complexity to the script; I just hope it won't become too serious. The SW saga has always been dealing with not-so-easy problems (fathers and sons, for instance) acting as "just a fairytale" - one of the reasons why I love it.
Ah, btw... all the story of the Senator coming from the army sounds very, very much like many characters in ancient Rome History. For instance, Julius Caesar became popular by the war in Gallia, and his adoptive son Augustus became Emperor by ending the civil war after Caesar's death. If you want to start here to draw some parallel... Just a thought, of course.
To the ones keeping on saying we SW fans need to get a life: *you* should get a life and stop annoying us by trying (with no result) to spoil our little hobby. I'm a student in Maths, I speak (more or less) three languages, I can understand Latin and a little of ancient Greek, I read "War and Peace" two times... and I know by heart the Star Wars movies. Am I a complete failure?
May the Force be with us - until we'll see all these darn movies.

My theroy on all of this....

    by lupine

Combining theroy I have heard from diffrent people, I have dedudced this:

Palpaline rises to power, ala Caesar, then you will have a Crassus (uknown...maybe Samuel L. Jackson?) and Pompei (Yoda). Palpaline is willing to kill of both other power players. First he kills of Samuel L. Jackson's charecvter (cant remeber his name, from now on refered to as SLJ), and does so. The three together are able to keep each other in check, but the death of SLJ causes Yoda to get weary of Palpaline, and a feirce power strugle erupts. There is a civil war between the outlaw Palpaline (like Caesar, did a lot questionable ethics outside of the republic's space), and Yoda (who is most likley more highly respected, and a cleaner figure). An assasination attempt is made on Yoda by a number of Dark Jedi, and he escapes to the swamp world of Degobah. There he defeats them, but their lingering dark force resinace balances out his light force power resinance, making him undetectable from outer space. Palpaline becomes Emporer. They disolve the senate, and we get into part 6, where Cassius (I know this is streaching it...), aka Obi, and Brutus kill Caesaer, with a young, amicable leader Mark Antony take over the responsability of the Empire. This would, ofcorse, leave the Emporer's 'clone' in the next 3 books as Agustus, and make everything a lot more complicated. I know this is a BIT off the wall, but drawing from a classic like Caesar would be great for Lucas to do, even if it is just losely.

    Springtime for hitler...

    by secret chicken

It is clear from what we know of the original "middle" trilogy and from what snippets of info Mr Moto has given us, that Palpatine's rise is a thinly veiled allegory of Hitler. Rascist and power-hungry, he knows how to play on people's fears and emotions. His army of stormtroopers can be clearly seen to be his version of the SS. Grand Moff Tarkin could be seen as a Goebells/himmler type figure. I am afraid I cannot type anymore, as it is freezing over here in the East Midlands. I can't carry on - my joints are frozen.
